John & Becky’s Movie Review of 21 Jump Street
Becky and I went to see the movie, 21 Jump Street this Friday at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at 21 Jump Street describes the movie as follows…
” In the action-comedy ’21 Jump Street,’ Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go… “
The Review
21 Jump Street stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, which is a rather odd partnership for a comedy. Especially for Channing Tatum since he typically does more serious roles like Dear John and The Vow that he recently did with Rachel McAdams.
They are actually very funny together though in this movie and have good chemistry as friends with nothing really in common. The characters are a crack-up together and they obviously had pretty good Screenwriters. This movie has plenty of laughs, but it is definitely rated R for some of the crude humor, the language and some of the violence in the film. Even the way they did the violence though was funny.
The biggest complaint about the movie is that is totally insane at times with the humor, but it’s still funny. Channing’s character is a bit too stupid at the beginning of the film, to the level of being totally clueless, but this does make the film funny. Jonah’s character is the super smart “nerd”, who was picked on in High School and when they go back he views it as a second chance. The challenge for both of them is they are undercover cops now and the dynamics of High School have changed since they were there last.
Becky and I really liked this movie, but as I mentioned already be prepared for some crude humor at times and foul language, a bit like American Pie, if you’ve seen that film. It delivered as a goofy comedy, but it’s not a film for everyone, so be forewarned that the bad language, some violence and crude humor may bother you, so you may want to pass on this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of John Carter
Becky and I went to see the movie, John Carter this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at John Carter describes the movie as follows…
“From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes ‘John Carter’–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars.”
The Review
John Carter is a new flick by Disney about a former Confederate soldier living in the late 1800′s, who gets transported to Mars while searching for gold and accidentally killing an alien being. Once he’s on the Red Planet called Barsoom, he discovers that he’s in the middle of an alien civil war. He also soon learns that gravity doesn’t have the same effect on him and he has what amounts to super human strength and the ability to jump great distance.
This movie had action from start to finish and two beautiful actors, but it’s a bit like a modern day Star Wars with the war and the aliens, the evil Empire, etc. I half expected to see Darth Vader appear on the screen. It had a pretty good story and was somewhat entertaining, but it was way too long. Becky ended up falling asleep and she actually left the movie to go see part of the new Eddie Murphy movie, she disliked John Carter that much.
Becky didn’t like this movie at all and I thought it was pretty good, but not enough to rate it worth the trip, unless you’re a big time science fiction fan otherwise you may not like this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Artist
Becky and I went to see the movie, The Artist last week ago at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at The Artist describes the movie as follows…
“Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion.”
The Review
The Artist won the Oscar for Best Picture this year, so Becky and I figured we had better go see it. We were not interested in seeing a silent film, let alone a black and white silent film, but we had to go in with an open mind.
The story was very well done. It’s about a silent movie film star who finds himself being cast aside when talking films start becoming popular. However, there’s a woman who he helps break into the movies, while he’s still a big star and famous. She ends up become a major movie star and he ends up losing everything. This creates a great deal of drama, that you can appreciate even though the film is silent.
Becky and I both really liked this movie, which surprised both of us since we both had low expectations. It was definitely worth the price of admission and a great experience.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax
Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO last week. The MovieFone website at Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax describes the movie as follows…
“From the creators of ‘Despicable Me’ and the imagination of Dr. Seuss comes the 3D-CG feature ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,’ an adaptation of the classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope.”
The Review
The Lorax is a new Dr. Suess film about his character The Lorax, who protects the trees and the adventures that ensue related to saving the trees. The characters in this movie are really good, the animation is great and the story is very good.
The Lorax is a story that deals with what happens when you destroy your resources for profit, until there are not any resources left. In this case, the resources are trees and one man has built a business from destroying them, while another man has created an empire selling people clean air since there are no trees to make clean air. In between the two of them are a young girl who wants to see a tree and a boy who has a crush on her, who will find her one.
This was a great movie. We all really liked it and thought it was a fun film for the whole family with a good message and quite a few laughs.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Act of Valor
Becky and I went to see the movie, Act of Valor two weeks ago at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our running buddy Mark. The MovieFone website at Act of Valor describes the movie as follows…
” An unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, ‘Act of Valor’ stars a group of active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs in a film like no other in Hollywood’s history.”
The Review
Act of Valor is being sold as the first movie that has ever used “active-duty” U.S. Navy SEALs to film the movie. Unfortunately, U.S. Navy SEALs are not trained actors. You could almost see them reading cue cards at times, half expecting them to pull out notes. That didn’t help the movie by any stretch, even if we are all thankful for their courage and service.
On the other hand the story had plenty of action and some amazing scenes like a fire-fight in a river that was pretty incredible. However, the movie jumps around quite a bit showing tactical moves of how our military takes out the bad guys to protect our citizens. It also shows the dangers that our men of valor are taking to keep another 911 from happening. They also showed at the end how many men have died protecting our country with the movie being a tribute to them.
For that reason, I thought the movie was pretty good and it’s definitely a good rental. I can’t recommend it as a good film though at the box office. Becky didn’t like this movie at all and thought it was a don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Gone
Becky is out of town this Weekend, so I took the kids to see Gone at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The MovieFone website at Gone describes the movie as follows…
“In the chilling suspense thriller ‘Gone,’ Jill Parrish (Amanda Seyfried) comes home from a night shift to discover her sister Molly has been abducted. Jill, having escaped from a kidnapping a year before, is convinced that the same serial killer has come back and taken Molly. Since the killer leaves no trace, the police don’t have any evidence and can’t help her. Afraid that Molly will be dead by sunrise, Jill sets out alone on a nail-biting chase to come face-to-face with the killer. Will she have enough time to find and outwit him, expose his secrets and save her sister?”
The Review
Gone was a movie that definitely has made me believe that the movie reviews at www.rottentomatoes.com are worthless. They gave this movie a rating of 14% rotten and in the meantime they loved the flick Chronicle that was terrible. Gone was a very good thriller and kept us on the edge of our seat with the story and the characters. It has excitement, suspense and action with lots of drama from beginning to end. The movie is very well done and delivers on just what it promises as an exciting thriller with a surprise ending.
Amanda Seyfried was good in this film and her character was believable, but she did seem a bit nuts and lied way too much throughout the movie. The story is disturbing because it is about a serial killer and the girl who gets away from his clutches, but nobody believes her story. Even though there are missing girls all over Portland, OR where the story takes place and the police are not doing anything to find them.
Anyway, she’s committed to a hospital as being crazy and when she is released her sister moves in with her to help her stop re-creating her nightmare. Then her sister turns up gone one day when she comes home from working a night shift, hence the name of the film.
The biggest flaw of this film is that it didn’t spend enough time showing enough of her past, beyond her actual abduction, but kind of glossed over her time in the hospital and dealing with the event. The Director used dialogue from a police officer in the film discussing her past to let you know what happened with a quick flashback. I think they should have started the film in the hospital with her being pumped with drugs as a crazy person and built from her being released from the hospital to make it a much more powerful film. The audience would have wondered then if she was actually abducted or a total nut.
In spite of the short comings, we all liked the movie and thought it was worth seeing. It’s definitely PG-13 though, so be aware of that fact when you go to see it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Woman in Black
My son Conroy and I went to see the movie The Woman in Black last week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Woman in Black describes the movie as follows…
“Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer, is recently widowed and grieving the loss of his wife when he is sent to a remote village to put a deceased eccentric’s affairs in order. Soon after his arrival, it becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a terrible secret. Kipps discovers that his late client’s house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is trying to find someone and something she lost, and that no one — not even the children — is safe from her terrible wrath…”
The Review
The Woman in Black was a creepy flick about a guy who gets sent to a town to investigate the death of a widow for a law office he’s working for and go through her papers. Little does he know that the widow’s home is haunted by a ghost that is out for revenge. Children are mysteriously dying in the town whenever someone sees the ghost.
The movie is a bit spooky with some startling parts in the film that will make you jump. The children dying was disturbing and the ghosts of the children were creepy, but the story was pretty cool. It’s definitely a ghost story, but I didn’t like the ending. Still we thought it was good. Conroy thought it was a Don’t Miss It and I thought it was worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie of This Means War
Becky and I took the kids to see This Means War to a sneak preview at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at This Means War describes the movie as follows…
“CIA operatives FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy) are inseparable best friends and partners. Together, their good looks, covert abilities and combat skills rank them among the CIA’s elite, but their longstanding personal and professional bond is put to the test when they meet Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). FDR and Tuck both fall hard for the beautiful blonde, and turn their deadly skills and an array of high-tech gadgetry against one another in an all-out battle for her love…”
The Review
This Means War was a movie that I thought was going to be stupid based on the previews that we saw at other movies. I wasn’t looking forward to seeing this movie at all, but it turned out to be pretty funny. The critics hated this movie, but the fans really liked it. Our kids liked it and thought it was hilarious, although I have to warn you to exercise caution here because it’s an adult movie with some adult humor and scenes.
Still the characters are good, the acting is well done and the story is pretty funny. It’s kind of a weird flick in that it’s an action and a comedy rolled into one with the two guys, who are best friends, going after the same pretty girl. The girl is played by Reese Witherspoon and one of the guy’s she falls for is that dude from Star Trek, Chris Pine and the other is Tom Hardy from that movie Warrior and a few other popular films.
I thought it was a good movie and worth the trip, with quite a few laughs and a story that was very different. Everyone else said that it’s a Don’t Miss It, so put it on your list of movies to see.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Safe House
Becky and I took went to see Safe House on opening night at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Safe House describes the movie as follows…
“For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town. A “housekeeper” who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself. When the first and only occupant he’s had proves to be the most dangerous man he’s ever met, Weston readies for duty. Tobin Frost has eluded capture for almost a decade…”
The Review
Safe House is an exiting movie about a CIA Agent gone wild. The story is pretty nuts and Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds are great together. Safe House grabbed us and kept our attention until the very end. There is non-stop action for the entire duration.
Quite a bit of the movie is unbelievable, but it’s still a great thrill ride. If you like action movies and thrillers than you’ll dig this movie. The movie has some surprising twists and turns that are really unexpected, especially the ending. I can’t say I liked all of the movie since some of the characters end up dead that I didn’t expect. The ending was pretty cool though.
Overall though, this movie delivered and was what we expected. We would recommend it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Big Miracle
Becky and I took the kids to see Big Miracle last weekend at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO. The Fandango website at Big Miracle describes the movie as follows…
“Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she’s also his ex-girlfriend…”
The Review
Big Miracle is a great film about three gray whales who are trapped in Alaska’s frozen tundra in a wall of ice and they are going to drown unless they can get free from the icy grave. The movie is based on a true story and it shows the dynamics between a news reporter, his ex-girlfriend who is an advocate for Greenpeace, an oil tycoon, the locals and several other characters.
The story is very good and it shows how people can get things done when they work together. What’s very interesting is how they have such different political views and ideas on how to save the whales. It’s probably where the saying, “Save the Whales” came from, but they didn’t say this in the film.
We all really liked this movie and we would recommend seeing it. It was definitely worth the trip. Although, we saw the one with sub-titles, so Corban rated it a Rental.
