John & Becky’s Movie Review of Manchester By the Sea

I went to see the new Star Wars movie Rogue One last week the AMC theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Manchester By the Sea describes the movie as follows…

“A hardened handyman named Lee (Casey Affleck) returns to his hometown in New England after the death of his brother (Kyle Chandler) to care for his 16-year-old nephew (Lucas Hedges), but his arrival also unearths his checkered past. Soon, Lee comes back into contact with his estranged wife (Michelle Williams) as he deals with life in his tight-knit former community…”

The Review:  Manchester By the Sea is a film that is getting rave reviews.  The acting is spectacular, especially Casey Affleck, who is the main character.  The story is disturbing and extremely depressing.

axio smartThe story is all about this guy who has a hard luck story and it goes through why he is such a mess.  The reason he is such a disaster is because he’s had a really bad event happen in his life and now his brother has passed away.  He needs to take care of his nephew and he’s not fit to do this on his own.  At least he doesn’t think so and this makes for a very boring movie.

Becky and I were not sure why everyone liked this movie.  It was boring, depressing and a little too real with serious raw emotion about how life can throw you a serious curve ball.

We left the film feeling like we had wasted our time.  The acting was great and the directing was good, but the story was not worth watching.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Hacksaw Ridge

hacksawridgeBecky and I went to see the movie Hacksaw Ridge last week the AMC theater in Castle Rock, CO last week .  The Fandango website at Arrival describes the movie as follows…

“Mel Gibson directed this biopic about World War II Army medic Desmond Doss (played here by Andrew Garfield). A conscientious objector who refused to take a life or even carry a weapon, Doss was eventually awarded the Medal of Honor for saving the lives of 75 soldiers on the battlefields of Okinawa..”

The Review:  Hacksaw Ridge is a true story Directed by Mel Gibson about Desmond Doss, who was an American Hero who refused to take a life during World War II.  The movie is extremely well done and could very well be nominated for Best Picture this year.

axio smartThe film tells the story about his life as a child, the life of his father and his father’s friends, who had died in World War I and his brother signing up to fight in World War II.  Desmond also decides that he must do his part to serve his country even though he refuses to take a life based on his religious views.  Which is a very odd position to take for volunteering for the Army during a war.

The acting and directing and the story is fantastic and this movie is superb.  I am amazed that anyone would like this film because the story is incredible.  The fact that it’s a true story is even more amazing.  This is definitely a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Arrival

arrivalBecky and I went to see the movie Arrival at the AMC Cinema in Destin, FL last week when we were visiting our relatives and running The Pensacola Marathon.  The Fandango website at Arrival describes the movie as follows…

“Denis Villeneuve directed this science-fiction suspense film about Earth’s response to a possible alien invasion. After extraterrestrial spacecraft plant themselves at various locations around the globe, a linguist (Amy Adams) and a theoretical physicist (Jeremy Renner) must find a way to communicate with the mysterious visitors….”

The Review:  Arrival has a 93% good on the Rotten Tomatoes website, but don’t believe the hype on this movie.  It’s a confusing, slow moving, boring film that is about aliens landing on planet Earth.  As if we’ve never seen that storyline before?

axio smartOur nephew Sterling had seen the movie the night before and he tried to warn us, but we were going off of all the great reviews and figured we had to go see it.  We should have listened to Sterling who told us it was pretty boring.  That’s the understatement of the year.  This movie is the classic alien film where mankind is bad and aliens are good, but they through in some time warp element as well that was supposed to make it better.  It didn’t.

The acting is good, the story is terrible, the movie moves as a snails pace for two hours and you are just hoping it will get over soon.  At the end of the movie, the guy at the end of our row said it best, “That was a complete waste of my time.” and most of the people in the theater started laughing because we all agreed.  This is definitely one to wait for at the rental box or when they show it a dozen times on one of the cable networks.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Don’t Breathe

dontbreatheBecky and I went to see the movie Don’t Breathe with Corban and Bianca at the AMC Cinema in Castle Rock, CO about a week ago.  The Fandango website at Don’t Breathe describes the movie as follows…

“Three friends (Dylan Minnette, Jane Levy, and Daniel Zovatto) plot to end their money woes by burglarizing the home of a blind recluse (Stephen Lang), but the heist quickly goes awry when they discover that their target is concealing a horrifying secret — and that he isn’t as harmless as they had thought….”

The Review:  Don’t Breathe is a wild movie about three burglars who make the mistake of robbing the wrong person.  I can’t really tell you too much about the film without giving it away other than that it’s suspenseful and scary.  It’s pretty violent and disturbing since breaking into the home of a blind person is a very heinous crime to being with, but it gets more strange as the movie progresses.

axio smartThe story is well done because there are plenty of twists and turns throughout the film.  The movie is different than any that we’ve seen before and it’s well done.  It has enough plot twists that it will leave you asking some questions at the of the movie, which is one of the reasons why we liked it.

We went in with really low expectations and liked it more than we expected.

Corban and Bianca liked it as well.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Florence Foster Jenkins

florencefosterjenkinsBecky and I went to see the movie Florence Foster Jenkins at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO last week with Becky’s Mom who was visiting from Arizona.  The Fandango website at Florence Foster Jenkins describes the movie as follows…

“Heiress Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) longs to become an opera star in 1940s New York, despite possessing a horrible singing voice. With the help and encouragement of her husband (Hugh Grant) and a talented musician (Simon Helberg), she finds a very strange kind of success as a performer and recording artist….”

The Review:  Florence Foster Jenkins is a very strange movie that is based on a true story about a woman who wants to be an opera singer, but her voice is a disaster.  This movie is really boring, but it’s pretty funny, especially when Meryl Streep’s character sings.  I was cracking up numerous times when she would start singing.  It was pretty hilarious at times.

The movie is based on a true story that made it interesting, but it’s not a movie for everyone.  I think many people would be bored watching this movie, even though the acting is very good.  It was fascinating the accomplishments that this woman had for being such a terrible singer.

Becky and I both liked it and so did Betty, but we definitely thought it was a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Jason Bourne

jasonbourneBecky and I went to see the movie Jason Bourne at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO tonight with our friends Tammy & Bruce.  The IMDB website at Jason Bourne describes the movie as follows…

“Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless CIA official and his agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer…”

The Review:  Jason Bourne is another Jason Bourne film that is so much like the other Jason Bourne films.  I think Matt Damon says a total of five words in this movie and the body count is larger than any of the previous films combined, but not really for any reason that is justified.  It’s an exciting movie, but it’s not very well written.  It’s more like a remake of the previous film than actually a stand alone film, but it’s done really well at the box office.

Our friends Tammy and Bruce both liked it, but Bruce thought it was too much senseless killing.  We liked it as well, but thought it would be much better than it was.  It’s another Jason Bourne movie and not much more to say other than that, so you know what to expect.  Becky thought it was Worth The Trip and I thought it was a Rental, but most people will go see it anyway.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Shallows

shallows_posterBecky and I went to see the movie The Shallows at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO tonight with Conroy and Becky. The Fandango website at The Shallows describes the movie as follows…

“Grieving young surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) travels to a secluded beach in search of a secret spot that her mother had discovered years earlier. While paddling out into the waves, Nancy is hunted by a great white shark and stranded on an embankment away from the shoreline. Alone and wounded, she enters a battle of wills to attempt to survive the attack and get ashore in this thriller…”

The Review:  The Shallows is another attempt to create a modern Jaws with a hot surfer girl played by Blake Lively, who is a definitely beautiful in this film along with the beach and the cinematography.  The story is actually a pretty concept and I don’t want to give a great deal of it away, but there are major problems with this film.

Like the movie Jaws this film is about a rogue and angry great white shark, who is looking to ring the dinner bell with the heroine of the film, along with anyone else who finds themselves in the water at this amazing beach in Mexico.  The acting is okay, there is plenty of suspense and action, but it is so cheesy that you can’t take it for very long.  The stupidity of Sharknado comes to mind as it moves toward the middle and end of the movie.  The Shallows is a bit too much like its name – shallow.

The premise could have made sense given the situation with the shark and its feeding ground being violated.  The way the film is done with the constant slow motion and far fetched situations just screamed too much “cheese” for all of us. This is one to watch as a rental for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Boss

thebossBecky and I went to see the movie The Boss on opening day at the AMC Theater’s in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Boss describes the movie as follows…

“Hugely successful businesswoman Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy) is convicted of insider trading and sentenced to prison. After being released, she is forced to move in with a long-suffering employee of hers (Kristen Bell), and tries to earn redemption and revamp her public image by helping a group of young girls in their quest to sell brownies….”

The Review:  The Boss is a ridiculous comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell about a woman who faced adversity as a child, only to get to the top of her game, like a Martha Stewart with a much more boisterous personality.

She is on her “A game” in life, when she gets convicted of insider trading, like Martha Stewart, only when she comes out of prison her world is completely different.  She has lost everything and has to start from ground zero and ends up living with her former employee and her daughter.  It’s more like a Trading Places type of situation, if you remember that film with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd, where Dan found himself living like a pauper after being accustomed to the “good life”.

The story is pretty funny and entertaining.  It has some good laughs, but be prepared for the ridiculous and the unrealistic as well, so don’t go into this movie expecting something close to reality.  It’s just goofy entertainment, but we both liked it.  The acting is good and the story is fun because it’s so ridiculous.

This is a film that is somewhere between being a rental that you can wait for to come out on Redbox or Netflix and going to see it on the Big Screen at AMC or Regal Cinema’s which is where we usually end up watching most of our movies.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Criminal

criminalBecky and I went to see the movie Criminal this Weekend at the AMC Theater’s in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Criminal describes the movie as follows…

“Sociopathic death-row inmate Jerico Stewart (Kevin Costner) is implanted with the memories of a deceased CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) in a desperate attempt to thwart a deadly plot involving a Dutch hacker (Michael Pitt). At the same time, Jerico reconnects with his own humanity…”

The Review:  Criminal has an all-star cast, but apparently not much of a marketing budget since we saw very little promotion for this film before going to see it.  We didn’t really know what to expect going into the movie, other than that it had Kevin Costner and Ryan Reynolds, but it also starred Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones and the acting and directing of this movie was excellent.  In fact, I thought the whole movie was extremely well done and both Becky and I really liked it.  It’s extremely violent at times, but it’s about a murderer who is used by the CIA to find out about a plot to take over the United States weapon defense system.

The story is rather fascinating, I doubt that it is possible, but the concept is to transfer the memories of a person to another person in order to gain access to information that only the first person had about a special mission.  The movie though is suspenseful and action packed, but it’s really violent.  The criminal is played by Kevin Costner and he does an excellent job playing this character who doesn’t have a conscience and cannot discern between good and evil.  He’s being hunted by the CIA for most of the film, along with the bad guy who wants what is inside his mind and he’s also the hunter at the same time.  All of this chaos makes for an interesting movie, along with some personal conflicts.

I thought this movie was a Don’t Miss It and Becky thought it was Worth The Trip.  I probably liked it more than she did since I’m a fan of thriller and action flicks probably a little more than she is.  I think most people who see this movie that enjoy those type of films with some crazy elements to them will like it..

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Jungle Book

thejunglebookBecky and I went to see the movie The Jungle Book today at the Regal Cinema’s in Lone Tree, CO with our son Conroy and daughter Bianca. The Fandango website at The Jungle Book describes the movie as follows…

“In this reimagining of the classic collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, directorJon Favreau uses visually stunning CGI to create the community of animals surrounding Mowgli (Neel Sethi), a human boy adopted by a pack of wolves. The appearance of a villainous tiger named Shere Khan (voiced byIdris Elba) forces Mowgli’s guardian, the panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), to shepherd the child to safety in the “man village.” Along the way, the boy meets an affable, lazy bear named Baloo…”

The Review:  The Jungle Book is a Disney remake of the classic cartoon that I grew up watching as a kid from the Rudyard Kpling classic.  It has the classic characters, including Mowgli and Bagheera the black panther and Baloo the lazy bear that are found in the cartoon, along with the snake that wants to eat him.  The movie though is different than the cartoon that is much more light hearted than this new rendition.  The animation is great in the movie that combines realism with the cartoons in much the same way that a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings film can take a person into an imaginary world of Elves or Witches, this movie takes the audience into the jungle.  It’s very well done and the animals come to life.

However, it is a bit too serious of a movie in my opinion and loses a great deal of the light heartedness that makes the cartoon such an entertaining classic, in the same way as Winnie the Pooh or other childhood stories tend to be.  The movie tries to be too much of a good verses evil and the law of the jungle with man being the bad guy, which is probably closer to the book.  I just know that I liked the cartoon much better than this movie because of that aspect of the film.  The characters are good, the giant python Kaa doesn’t show up for very long in this film, but in the cartoon it has a much larger part as the Siberian Tiger is on its quest to find the boy.

Overall, this movie is entertaining and it will do well at the box office with the kids.  Becky didn’t like it as much as I did or Conroy and Bianca liked it enough that she saw it twice, if that tells you anything.
