John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Burnt

burntBecky and I went to see the new movie Burnt at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO on Friday night. The Fandango website at Burnt. describes the movie as follows…

“Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper), a young chef who was once a rising star in the restaurant world, is recovering from a drug addiction that had decimated his promising career. After getting clean he heads to London to take the helm of a top restaurant and is determined to earn it three Michelin stars…”

The Review:  Becky was interested in seeing this flick because Bradley Cooper was cooking.  I could have gone either way with going to see it, but I kind of thought that it wouldn’t be that good of a movie.  It turns out that I was right.  It’s a pretty boring film about an arrogant chef who has a serious addiction problem and trying to find his way back after screwing up his career.  The characters were kind of interesting, but watching a bunch of food being cooked for most of the movie was pretty boring.

The movie overall wasn’t very good.  The acting was good, but the story was rather dull.  It just didn’t grab your interest and make you want to really get into the main characters life.  He seemed too much like a spoiled and privileged brat and he’s a jerk to everyone in the film for most of the movie as he goes about trying to find himself.  We left the movie thinking it would have probably been a good rental instead of sitting in the theater to watch this one.

Becky and I both rated this movie a rental for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Martian

themartianWe are a bit behind on movie reviews and trying to catch up this Weekend, so I will start with the new Matt Damon movie The Martian.  Becky and I went to see the new movie The Martian at the Megaplex movie theater in St George, Utah last week while we were running the St. George Marathon. The Fandango website at The Martian. describes the movie as follows…

“AAfter an exploratory mission goes awry, lone astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left for dead on the hostile surface of Mars and must use his scientific ingenuity to homestead an enclosed habitat where he can survive. Meanwhile, the astronauts he left behind realize the severity of his plight and join forces with an international coalition of scientists to launch a rescue mission in defiance of NASA protocol..”

The Review:  Okay.  This is the most over-rated movie we have seen all year.  I will start out by saying it is a Rental after sitting through it for 2 and a half hours and waiting for it to eventually end.  Everyone loves this movie and we do not know why.  Did they see something that we didn’t?  We think it will be a great rental since you can pause it and go do something and come back and little will have changed from the time you leave until you start again.  Matt Damon will still be stuck on Mars!

If you’ve seen Castaway with Tom Hanks lost on a desert island with Wilson his volleyball then you have seen this movie, only now Matt Damon is on Mars with his rover and his plants.  He does get to chat with people on Earth via his computer and that’s pretty exciting.  If you have seen Gravity with Sandra Bullock lost in space than you have already seen this movie, only with Matt Damon on Mars trying to figure out how to stay alive on the planet Mars with little hope for survival.  Sound familiar? Apparently, the movie critics and the public have a had a short term memory loss because nobody seems to remember these two movies and had that “Ah Ha” moment.  Maybe it is because there are actually more scenes in this movie with other people than just Matt Damon, where Gravity killed everyone off pretty quickly and Tom Hanks had no support other than his imaginary friend.

The guy who wrote this must have seen both of these movies and said, “Oh my gosh, if I put a new title on these two films and merge them together with a few more characters and call it “The Martian” I’ll earn a gazillion dollars.”  It’s the same plot as the other films though when you get down to it.  One guy for two and a half hours trapped alone on a deserted place (simply insert an island, space, Mars) and trying to figure out how he is going to survive.  There was very little that was new here.  The acting was good and the Directing was good, but the story was a rehash.  If you liked those other two films than you will really like this movie, but it’s really like a sequel for those two films with Matt Damon instead of Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock.

Becky and I both were bored out of our minds after about an hour and fifteen minutes of this movie, so we had to rate it a rental. I would not believe the “hype” and wait for this one to come out on Netflix or the Redbox.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Intern

theinternposterBecky and I went to see the new movie The Intern at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO on Friday night. The Fandango website at The Intern. describes the movie as follows…

“A retired successful business owner and widower (Robert De Niro) lands an internship at a fashion website run by a young, career-driven woman (Anne Hathaway) in this Warner Bros. comedy…”

The Review:  The Intern stars Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro and it’s a cute comedy about a woman CEO of a dot com company that is wildly successful and her life challenges.  The woman played by Anne Hathaway has a house husband and young daughter at home as she struggles to balance her career and family.  Along comes an old retired guy, who’s wife has passed away to save the day as an intern for the company.

The movie had a pretty good idea going with the old intern idea.  However, there were too many inconsistencies for Becky and me.  It was way too far fetched most of the time and although there was good acting, directing and some good lines in the film, overall the story was kind of lame.  You kind of had that “Yeah right.” feeling as you watched the movie progress and it was borderline ridiculous at times.  We didn’t dislike the movie, but we didn’t like it enough either, so it was definitely a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Black Mass

blackmassBecky and I went to see the new movie Black Mass at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO on Friday night with our son Conroy. The Fandango website at Black Mass. describes the movie as follows…

“The true story of one of America’s most violent and infamous gangsters, Whitey Bulger. Johnny Depp stars as Bulger, who was the brother of a state senator and was eventually convinced to wear a wire for the FBI to bring down the Italian mafia in Boston after they invaded his territory. Scott Cooper directs, with Mark Mallouk penning the screenplay based on Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill’s 2001 best-seller Black Mass: The True Story of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI and The Irish Mob…”

The Review:  Black Mass is a true story about a very wicked man and evil gang of thugs.  The main character is played by Johnny Depp and he should get an Oscar for his role in this movie.  The acting and directing are fantastic in this film, but the content is disturbing.  I felt that they were glorifying this horrible criminal a bit too much, but he was really pure evil and a total psychopath.

The story is fascinating, especially since it is a true story and the fact the FBI allowed Whitey Bulger to go around murdering people as part of a plot to get the Mob.  It was really unbelievable and from that stand point the film was good, but it moved pretty slow and watching these gangsters killing people was disturbing.  I thought it was between Worth The Trip and a Rental, but since the acting was so good I have to give it a Worth The Trip, along with Conroy and Becky.  Be prepared to see a very evil dude.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

manfromuncleBecky and I went to see the new movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E. at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO on Friday night.  The Fandango website at The Man From U.N.C.L.E. describes the movie as follows…

“Director Guy Ritchie brings the popular TV spy series to the big screen in this origin story. Set in the 1960s CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB op Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) pair up to stop an international criminal organization that is dealing in nuclear weapons and technology, which could upset the balance of power in the world…”

The Review:  The Man From U.N.C.L.E. takes place in the 1960’s with two spies going against one another in a bit like the Spy vs Spy comics of Mad Magazine.  In this movie, the have to team up to go after a diabolical mad woman who is dealing in nuclear weapons and wants to destroy the world.  The story is good, it is directed by Guy Ritchie and he does a good job with the film, except for in a few parts where he has the multi-screen effect that you would often see in 1970’s television shows that was annoying then and is more annoying today.  That part of the movie could have been left out for sure.

I liked Henry Cavill in this movie more than Armie Hammer simply because Armie’s Russian character seemed like he was “trying” to play the part, where Cavill being British played a pretentious snob of a spy much better.  He had no problem pulling off his character and you believed that the character Solo really was a British agent with an attitude, which was one of the things that was entertaining about the film.  There are plenty of cool classic cars and some great chase scenes, with plenty of action.  It seemed longer than it was though, which is just under two hours and we enjoyed all of the characters.

Unlike many of the spy movies that are incredibly far fetched these characters find themselves in situations that would be very difficult to overcome and they are able to do so using skills that are less than super human.  That’s one of the things that is refreshing about this movie is that it’s an action film without a bunch of hype. It’s good entertainment.

Becky and I both liked it enough to recommend it.  We thought it was Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Of Mr. Holmes

mrholmesposterBecky and I went to see the new movie Mr. Holmes at the Regal Cinema in Englewood, CO.  The Fandango website at Mr. Holmes describes the movie as follows…

“Director Bill Condon puts a spin on Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated character with Mr. Holmes, which stars Ian McKellen as the famous detective. The set-up is that a now-retired Holmes, his steel-trap mind starting to fade with old age, lives out his golden years in the late 1940s. He returns from a trip to Japan searching for a plant that could slow the aging process and help him regain the faculties he knows he’s lost….”

The Review:  This movie has a great deal of heart.  It’s a movie about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes as an old man, who is trying to figure out why he retired after a case that he can no longer remember.  As he is aging, his mind is slipping and he’s in search of a cure to keep his mind sharp as he grows older.  One solution that he come up with is to harvest Royal Jelly from bees as a bee keeper that he believes will help with his senility.

He travels to Japan in search of a tree that has been destroyed from the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima that he believes will be even better than the Royal Jelly and in the process he meets a Japanese man who blames him for his father leaving him.  That is an interesting twist to the story and how Mr. Holmes responds to the man about his father.  The story is very well done and the acting is good, but it moves rather slow.  Almost too slow, much like an old man trying to solve a mystery.  The dynamic with Mr. Holmes a a young boy who has lost his Dad in the Great War made the film for me.

I liked the movie more than Becky did and the cinematography was fantastic.  I thought it was definitely worth the trip and Becky probably rated it as a Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Gift

thegiftBecky and I went to see the new movie The Gift at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with Corban and her Mom.  The Fandango website at The Gift describes the movie as follows…

“Written and directed by Joel Edgerton, The Gift centers around a young married couple Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall). Simon has a chance encounter with a former acquaintance, the off-kilter Gordo (Edgerton), who begins to surprise the couple with unwanted and increasingly menacing gifts. Eventually, Gordo also reveals a hidden secret from Simon’s past and throws the couple’s lives into a tailspin…”

The Review:  Becky and I are always big fans of thrillers, especially crazy movies like Gone Girl.  We expected something like that with The Gift, especially based on the previews of the movie.  It was pretty well done.  The acting was good, the story was pretty good and the directing was good, but it wasn’t very scary or overly thrilling.  It isn’t a terrible film, but it was over-the-top excellent as expected.

The movie is about a couple that has moved to California to get a new job and while shopping runs into an old schoolmate from High School, named “Gordo” as a nickname.  It turns out the two have really negative history and the main character is trying to keep it a secret from his wife.  Gordo keeps bringing the two of them gifts and getting close to the wife of his hostile friend from days gone by.  The movie gets a bit exciting as you start to learn about their past and the present.   It escalates into a serious conflict between all of the parties.

I liked the movie more than Becky, Corban and Betty did.  There are some disturbing aspects of the film with what happens to some of the characters, but I thought it was Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Fantastic Four

fantasticfourposternew2I went to see the new movie Fantastic Four at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with Conroy and Corban last night.  The Fandango website at Fantastic Four describes the movie as follows…

“Brilliant scientist Reed Richards builds a device that allows users to teleport to an alternate dimension, but an experiment involving it goes wrong and leaves him and his three teammates with unusual superpowers. The quartet are then forced to work together to battle an enemy from their past…”

The Review:  The first Fantastic Four movie really sucked and this one we thought would be better.  Unfortunately it wasn’t, but for different reasons.  The story was actually really good and the acting was good, but the problem was how they put the film together.  It was actually a really great movie for the first half of the film, but then things fell apart.

They built up this really cool story and the next thing you know they threw the audience into this strange situation between the main characters and the evil character Doom.  They didn’t build it up to a major fight scene between the super hero’s and the villain.  The fight scene lasted about 10 minutes or less and it was really ridiculous.  It was as though they had to keep the movie to 90 minutes and they just got in a hurry to finish the film, which really wrecked it for everyone.  People leaving the movie had the same comments.  Needless to say, we were all disappointed because the ending was such an incredible let down.  Which is why we are suggesting you wait for the rental for this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

missionimpossibleBecky and I went to see the new movie Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows…

“Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his teammates reunite for this pulse-pounding sequel, in which they attempt to take down a secret international organization known as the Syndicate–highly skilled ex-IMF agents who are intent on bringing down their former outfit…”

The Review:  The Mission Impossible series has been pretty good overall.  The last one and the first one were really good with several in between that kind of sucked.  If you’re not a Tom Cruise fan like our son Conroy, you will probably still like this film.  As he put it, “The movie was great except that it had Tom Cruise.”, which was kind of funny.  Becky and I both thought this movie was great and so did our friends Mark and Maria.  Tom Cruise is a nut outside of his movies, but there is not arguing that he knows how to make a good movie with this franchise.  It’s going to be a blockbuster and he does all of his own stunts, which are pretty over the top most of the time.

There is plenty of action and suspense in this movie.  It’s action packed from start to finish, much like Ghost Protocol.  There is a hot chick in the movie as you would expect with these spy thriller type movies.  It’s like the Bourne and 007 series if you haven’t seen the previous Mission Impossible movies.  The acting and directing are good and the only complaint from most people is that it is way too long.  Personally though I liked that it was long because it didn’t leave you hanging, like many films today end up doing.  The bottom line is that this was definitely a Don’t Miss It.  It’s worth the price of admission, so go check it out.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Southpaw

southpawBecky and I went to see the new movie Southpaw at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows…

“Jake Gyllenhaal stars as troubled boxer Billy Hope in this high-stakes drama from director Antoine Fuqua and Sons of Anarachy creator Kurt Sutter. At the height of his fame and success, Hope is convinced by his loving wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) to retire from the sport in order to spend more time with the couple’s daughter Leila (Oona Laurence)…”

The Review: I was thinking that a boxing film was probably going to suck, but the acting in this movie was really great.  Jake is probably going to win an award for his role in this movie and it was really well Directed.  In fact, this is one of the best movies we have seen in quite awhile with plenty of action and drama with a really good storyline.  The movie portrays the life of a boxer, who goes from a rags to riches life to having his world ripped out from under him and how he must overcome his emotions.  He has to battle back against numerous odds that are against him and decide what people he is going to trust and let back into his life.

The language is rough, so be prepared for that when you see it and it is violent as a boxing film.  It also shows the dangers of gun violence when ignorant people make bad choices with weapons.  This is a movie that will pull at your heart strings and it is a movie with characters that have plenty of heart.  We both thought it was definitely a Don’t Miss It and would recommend seeing it for sure.  We really enjoyed this movie and it was really well done.
