John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Woman In Gold

womanofgoldBecky and I went to see the film Woman in Gold at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The MovieFone website at Woman in Gold describes the movie as follows…

“Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria’s beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.” With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoeberg (Ryan Reynolds), Maria embarks upon a lengthy legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria considers them national treasures…”

The Review: This film was based on a true story and the story is really quite amazing.  It jumps between World War II when the Nazi’s confiscated personal property and everything else from the Jewish people and modern times with a woman who lived through the German nightmare.  The woman in gold is actually a painting that was painted in gold and worth millions, but owned by the primary characters family and she wants it back from the Austrian government.

The acting in this film is fantastic and I am expecting that Helen Mirren will be nominated for best actress for this movie.  If she isn’t I will be surprised because she’s amazing in this film.  Ryan Reynolds was great in this movie too and they worked extremely well together and the story is great.  It will keep your interest and I liked the way it jumped back to when she was a young woman, so you could experience what her and her family went through during the Holocaust.

Unfortunately, that generation is passing away and I hope that future generations never forget what was done to the Jewish people.  Of course, there is a Christian Holocaust going on right now in man parts of the world and it’s horrific how evil people can be to one another.  This movie illustrates this point well, even years later when a government in the wrong doesn’t want to admit their wicked past.

Becky and I really liked this movie and thought it was a don’t miss it for sure.  If you miss it at the theater, make sure you see it when it comes out to view at home.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Longest Ride

longestrideBecky and I went to see the new movie The Longest Ride this Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Longest Ride describes the movie as follows…

Nicholas Sparks‘ best-selling novel comes to the big screen in this romantic drama from director George Tillman Jr.. The plot centers on the star-crossed love affair between a retired bull rider who wants to get back in the saddle, and an art student preparing to seek her fortune in New York City. As their relationship is put to the ultimate test, the wisdom of an aging man who recalls his own lost love serves as a source of great inspiration. Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson, Jack Huston, and Alan Alda star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi…”

The Review: I had low expectations going into this movie and figured it would be a very predictable and sappy Chick Flick, but I had to amuse Becky who had been waiting to see it.  I wasn’t a huge fan of The Notebook, it was good don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t think it was as great as everyone else thought it was.  I thought this movie was much better.  The Longest Ride has a great story, in fact it has a story within a story and it was a very well done.  It’s an entertaining love story that definitely kept our interest from start to finish.

The acting is really good and the characters were interesting.  The actors really fit the roles and they were believable.  The directing of the film was also well done.  Often times a film can have a good story, but if it is put together sloppy it’s not very entertaining to watch.  This was not the case with The Longest Ride that had several plot twists throughout the film.

Becky and I really liked this movie and thought it was definitely a Don’t Miss It. It’s a great date night film and you shouldn’t be disappointed if you go see it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Furious 7

furious7Becky and I went to see the new movie Furious 7 on opening Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The MovieFone website at Furious 7 describes the movie as follows…

“Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Furious 7.  James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black.  They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey, Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell….”

The Review: Becky and I saw the first six of these films and this was the most ridiculous of them all as far as being far fetched.  There are some great vehicles in the film, plenty of car chases and extreme action. It’s a bit like a super hero film since what the characters pull off is impossible.  All of the characters have super human like abilities and some of the stunts are over the top, but it’s still very entertaining.

At the end of the film they had an incredible tribute to Paul Walker that definitely made it worth seeing the movie.  I really liked it and thought that it was worth the trip.  Becky liked it too, but it was really far-fetched that bugged her a little too much.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of CHAPPiE

chappieBecky and I went to see the new movie CHAPPiE today at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO with Corban and Bianca. The Fandango website at CHAPPiE describes the movie as follows…

Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) expands on his 2003 short film Tetra Val in this futuristic sci-fi saga written in collaboration with screenwriter Terri Tatchell (who previously worked with Blomkamp on the screenplay for District 9), centering on the story of a police robot named Chappie, who develops the ability to think and feel for himself. As people fight back against the mechanized police force, sinister forces seek to capture Chappie for their nefarious purposes. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi…”

The Review: We had seen the previews for this movie for quite a while, but we are not quite sure if it would be any good.  The movie looked a bit stupid, but it was much better than we expected.  It could be because we had low expectations, but it was really well done.  The robot character was really well done and the story was good with excellent acting.  The story asks the question on what would happen if a robot was granted consciousness like a human being and what the result would be.  Would mankind accept such a being or try to destroy it.

The movie is strange and is extremely violent.  It’s like a science fiction action movie and it was done by the people who did District 9 about the aliens, which Becky and I thought was really stupid.  This film is much better and is very interesting from a moral and spiritual sense based on what people believe to be true or not.  I think that Pastor’s should definitely see this film because it deals with what is consciousness and are we as human beings anything more than a computer program?  Personally, I do not believe so because I believe that man is a spirit, soul and body and not just a body and a soul.  However, there are many who disagree with my view and their views fall much more in line with what this movie presents.

Becky didn’t like it very much, but she is not a fan of science fiction and it was very violent and the language is harsh.  Corban and I both liked it and Bianca was with Becky on this one and we didn’t know it was Rated R when we went into it, so be forewarned.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Focus

focusposterBecky and I went to see the new movie Focus last weekend in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday night with our friends Mark and Maria. The Fandango website at Focus describes the movie as follows…

“Nicky has studied the science of human nature his whole life, and understands precisely how to earn anyone’s trust, or fool them into never noticing he’s stealing their watch, or wallet, or anything they might have that Nicky can sell. In the movie’s opening sequence, he’s eating at a New York restaurant when the gorgeous Jess approaches his table and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend so that she can avoid a particularly determined guy at the bar who won’t stop hitting on her. The two of them hit it off, but he quickly figures out that she’s running a scam on him and soon turns the tables on her and her partner. Undaunted, Jess begs Nicky to teach her what he knows about the criminal life, and he brings her in on a plan to steal from as many people as possible during Super Bowl week in New Orleans. She turns out to be a natural, and quickly learns the ropes of this unscrupulous world…”

The Review: We haven’t seen Will Smith in a good movie in a while, but this one looked pretty interesting.  It was a bit of a different flick with Margot Robbie starring as a girl who wants to be a con-artist like Will Smith’s character.  He happens to be the best in the business and his job requires focus, hence the name of the movie.  There are quite a few plot twists in this movie and it has a good story as well.  However, it’s also pretty far fetched at times, especially when both character end up at the same location three years later for different reasons.

Even though there are some shortcomings in this movie it is entertaining.  The film is well done and we all liked it.  It’s not a great flick that is going to win any awards, but it was worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Unfinished Business

unfinishedbusinessBecky and I went to see the new movie Unfinished Business this weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO on Friday with our friends Hope and Chris. The Fandango website at Unfinished Business describes the movie as follows…

“Ken Scott’s comedy Unfinished Business stars Vince Vaughn as a struggling businessman trying to get his fledgling company off the ground. To do so he must travel with his partners (Dave Franco and Tom Wilkinson) on a foreign business trip in order to land a huge client. Unexpectedly, our hero discovers that he is competing against his former boss, and his attempts to show the prospective clients the best night of their lies leads to a number of unexpected complications. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi”

The Review: There are some really bad comedies that I’ve seen over the years and this is one of the worst.  The film tries to be funny with some totally over the top homosexual scenes and a few other scenes that were just incredibly stupid.  Wayne’s World was a stupid comedy, but it was actually funny.  This movie was not funny.  They mixed very serious elements of this film, such as the main character’s son being teased for being fat and bullied at school with slapstick type comedy.

I’m not going to waste a great deal of time on this review.  The movie sucked.  I laughed a few times because it was so ridiculous I couldn’t believe it.  Becky didn’t like it and Hope hated it.  There were a few laughs in this movie, but overall it was raunchy and a waste of time and money.  It’s definitely a don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Kingsman: The Secret Service

kingsmanposterBecky and I went to see the new movie Kingsman: The Secret Service this weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO last night with our sons Corban and Conroy. The Fandango website at Kingsman: The Secret Service describes the movie as follows…

Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons‘ comic series is adapted for the big screen in this Matthew Vaughn-directed action thriller. The story centers on a secret agent who recruits a juvenile delinquent into a top-secret spy organization. Together, they battle a tech genius with diabolical ambitions. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi”

The Review: This film was a trip.  It’s a bit like a James Bond 007 type film with comedy and a slasher movie all rolled into one move that is extremely graphic.  It’s graphic like a graphic comic book where people get killed at random in strange ways with very off-the-wall characters.  The main villain is played by Samuel L Jackson and he does a fantastic job being an evil genius billionaire with a lisp, who doesn’t like the sight of blood, which is why I said the movie has quite a bit of comedy included in the script.  He has a plot to take over the world because of global warming and the way he wants to do it is something that is very clever, but is almost like a zombie apocalypse.

Be prepared for plenty of blood and insane mayhem and killing in this move, much more than even a Quentin Tarantino movie like Kill Bill, but it’s a bit like that movie in some respects because of the comic book aspect to it.  It doesn’t feel like a comic book film, but the story feels like it’s right out of comic book genre.  It is very well done with really great acting and a fantastic story, but it’s definitely rated R for the violence, sex and slasher type killings that you would see in a horror movie, so be prepared.  We all liked it even though it’s pretty crazy and extremely violent.  It’s a bit of a modern day 007 film presented in a completely different way.  Most people who saw it liked it and thought it was worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Seventh Son

seventh_sonBecky and I went to see the new movie Seventh Son at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO tonight with our son Conroy. The Fandango website at Seventh Son describes the movie as follows…

“A powerful knight trains his young apprentice to do battle against a diabolical witch who is gathering an army to wage supernatural war on all of mankind in this adaptation of author Joseph Delaney‘s young-adult novel The Spook’s Apprentice. Years ago, brave Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) succeeded in capturing evil enchantress Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), and locking her away to rot in prison. Now Mother Malkin has escaped, and she’s hungry for revenge. As her followers gather power, the dreaded witch reveals her infernal intentions to the noble knight who once imprisoned her, and who now has until the next full moon to train Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son, to defend humanity against a threat whose evil knows no bounds. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi”

The Review: Conroy and I have read the entire Last Apprentice book series by Joseph Delaney, so we were looking forward to this movie and always thought it would be cool if the books were made into a movie.  Unfortunately this is one of those films where the screenplay was not written by the author of the book series and the movie doesn’t match the book at all.  It’s really unfortunate because it could have been like Harry Potter or other fantasy films where the film actually followed the book.  Instead it was pretty terrible if you are a fan of the book series because the book series is excellent.

The film is a bit like a Van Helsing type movie and it has plenty of action and the story is okay, but there are more warlocks than witches and too many characters that are not in the book.  The acting is good and it was a pretty good movie if you wait for it as a rental.  It could have been such a great movie, but it was disappointing.  Becky thought it was a rental and I did too.  Conroy said that it might have been worth the trip if he hadn’t read the book series, but I didn’t really feel that way.  I don’t think it was that well done, but too much of a film that has been done before.

I would definitely wait for the rental on this one and if you want to read an interesting book series, pick up the books.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Mortdecai

mordecaiBecky and I went to see the new movie Mortdecai at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO yesterday with our friends Hope and Chris. The Fandango website at Mortdecai describes the movie as follows…

“Lionsgate and OddLot Entertainment team up for this action comedy starring Johnny Depp as Charles Mortdecai, a roguish art dealer in search of a stolen painting that could hold the code to a forgotten Nazi bank account that’s rife with riches. Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, and Olivia Munn co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi”

The Review: The Rotten Tomatoes website gave this film a terrible review, but Fandango gave it a much favorable review. Which is one of the reasons why I am skeptical about many of the review sites that are out there, but we decided to go and see it last night anyway.  Our friend Chris is not a big Johnny Depp fan and he liked it and thought it was funny.

I really liked this movie and thought it was really well done.  Gwyneth Paltrow was really great in this film, as the wife of Mortdecai who is played by Johnny Depp and his man servant “Jacque” played by Paul Bettany really made the movie.  I thought the writing was very well done and it was Directed well also.

The film reminded me a little bit of the Pink Panther movies where the inspector was a ding dong, but the character was still funny.  This is how this film is with Johnny Depp’s character, but he is a bit more intelligent than the famous inspector in those films. There are some good laughs and plot twists in this movie and the entire cast did a great job on this movie.  It is too bad that it’s not doing well at the box office.  I think Depp was better in this movie than in the film Dark Shadows that he did a few years ago that was a whacky comedy.

We all liked it, but I definitely liked it more than Becky did.  She thought it was “okay”, probably more of a rental than being actually worth the trip. I thought it was really well done and was somewhat of a sophisticated comedy, if there is such a thing. When you see it you will know what I mean, but it could be because it takes place mostly in London.

I recommend it and I will probably see it again when it comes out on Netflix or on DVD.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Boy Next Door

TheBoyNextDoorBecky and I went to see the new movie The Boy Next Door at the AMC Theaters in Littleton, CO this Weekend with our friends. The Fandango website at The Boy Next Door describes the movie as follows…

“Neglected by her adulterous husband and left feeling particularly vulnerable as her marriage crumbles, lonely teacher Claire (Jennifer Lopez) has an affair with a younger neighbor (Ryan Guzman) that turns terrifying as his fiery lust morphs into dangerous obsession. John Corbett, Ian Nelson, and Kristin Chenoweth co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi..”

The Review: We went to see this new Jennifer Lopez flick with our friends Mark and Maria at this AMC Theater in Littleton on Friday and the seats were pretty amazing.  You could recline them like a lazy boy and put your feat up, which was super cool.  The movie though was not so cool.

Jennifer Lopez gets it on with a young “boy toy” next door, who was supposed to be a distraught teenager that is in her classroom and he looked like he was about 21 years of age.  Probably, so that she could have this incredibly racy sex scene with an adult posing as a minor, but that wasn’t the real problem.  The real problem was this movie was not very good.  It was whacky.  The police never showed up during the film when they would have arrested this kid numerous times the way that our schools are in lock down today.  It was way too far fetched and pretty stupid.

None of us thought this movie was worth the price of admission.  We thought it wouldn’t even be very good as a rental, so we’re rating it as a don’t bother.
