John & Becky’s Movie Review of 21

21Becky and I went to see 21 at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Friday, with Becky’s Dad who was visiting from out of town. The Fandango website at 21 describes the movie as follows:

“Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy, brilliant M.I.T. student who — needing to pay school tuition — finds the answers in the cards. He is recruited to join a group of the school’s most gifted students that heads to Vegas every weekend armed with fake identities and the know-how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor. With unorthodox math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leading the way, they’ve cracked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time. Seduced by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and by his smart and sexy teammate, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn’t illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casinos’ menacing enforcer: Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne).”

The Review
21 is a great flick! There is plenty of entertainment value for the money with this movie. It’s really an interesting and entertaining story that will keep your interest from start to finish. There are so many cool parts of this film that made it one that you won’t want to miss.

21 is one of those movies that was good from beginning to end. It was predictable most of the time, but there were enough twists to keep you wondering how it was going to turn out and the ending is really neat. The acting is great, the directing is great, the characters are awesome and the story is a trip.

This is definitely the movie to make sure you see on the big screen. Becky and I both rated it as a Don’t Miss It and her Dad liked it as much as we did.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Shutter

ShutterBecky and I went to see Shutter at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado last week. The Yahoo website at Shutter describes the movie as follows:

“For photographer Ben and his new wife Jane, his new assignment–a lucrative fashion shoot in Tokyo–was supposed to be a kind of working honeymoon. With this exotic professional opportunity and the limitless possibilities of a new marriage, Ben and Jane arrive in Japan. But as they make their way on a mountain road leading to Mt. Fuji, their new life together comes to, literally, a crashing halt. Their car smashes into a woman standing in the middle of the road, who has materialized out of nowhere. Upon regaining consciousness after the accident, Ben and Jane cannot find any trace of the girl Jane believes she hit with the car.”

The Review
Shutter is a whacky horror film that was a bit like The Grudge and The Ring, only this time the ghosts lived in the camera. The movie isn’t terrible, but it’s not really worth the price of admission unless you’re planning to see it at a cheap theater after it has been out for a while. The movie is predictable, it moved slow and was pretty cheesy, but overall it was entertaining.

We can’t rate it as being worth the trip, but it will make for a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Never Back Down

Never Back DownBecky and I went to see Never Back Down at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, Colorado last week. The Fandango website at Never Back Down describes the movie as follows:

“Jake Tyler (Sean Faris) is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler. After he is unwittingly pulled into a fight, defeated and humiliated, a classmate introduces him to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting but rather an art form he wants to master, and he soon finds his mentor in Jean Roqua (Djimon Hounsou), who takes Jake under his wing.”

The Review
Never Back Down is a great flick. It’s a bit like an updated version of The Karate Kid with Ultimate Fighting. There are a bunch of no name actors in it, except for the dude from Gladiator (Djimon Hounsou). It’s a teen movie, but it’s done very well with plenty of action and excitement.

The story is really good. There is a good moral to the story and Becky and it’s pretty clean and well done. Becky and I both liked it and thought it was worth the trip. You should enjoy this one if you see it at the theaters or at home.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Drillbit Taylor

Drillbit TaylorBecky and I went to see Drillbit Taylor at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado last week. The Yahoo website at Drillbit Taylor describes the movie as follows:

“Ryan, Wade and Emmit attend their first day at high school and they’re pumped… until they meet up with Filkins, a school bully who comes off like a little Hannibal Lecter. Before they become completely engulfed in Filkins’ reign of terror, they seek out some protection by placing an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine. Their best response – and the cheapest – comes from Drillbit Taylor, a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless – he likes to say “home-free” – existence on the beach. He enrolls them in some physical and mental training.”

The Review
Drillbit Taylor is a quirky flick with Owen Wilson and very few laughs. Owen Wilson plays his same passive character that he does in every comedy lately he has done in recent years. Only this character is beyond ridiculous. It’s something you would expect from Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell with their zany roles as of late.

Drillbit Taylor might be worth renting, but don’t waste your time or money going to see this one on the big screen. It’s just so unbelievable that it’s stupid.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!

Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who!Becky and I took the kids to see Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, Colorado last week. The Fandango website at Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! describes the movie as follows:

“The imaginative elephant Horton hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community which thinks he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help.”

The Review

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! is the latest animated kids movie starring a bunch of name brand actors as the voices for these characters. The kids really liked the film and thought it was great. The story was okay, but if you have kids you’ll probably end up going anyway regardless of if you like the story or not.

I didn’t like it as much as the kids did and Becky and I felt the same about this one. We both would recommend waiting for the rental. The kids all really enjoyed it though, but maybe we’ve just seen so many animated kids films we’re kind of dull to them.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Penelope

PenelopeBecky and I took the kids to see Penelope tonight at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, Colorado last night. The Fandango website at Penelope describes the movie as follows:

“Born with the snout of a pig, young Penelope Wilhern spends her life a virtual prisoner in her home. Believing that the only way to break the curse is to marry one of her own kind, she meets a number of suitors, but all reject her. Two devious men , one with a grudge against the family, hire a man to pose as a suitor, but complications arise when he begins to fall in love with Penelope, and she makes a bid for freedom.”

The Review
Penelope is a story about self acceptance and loving yourself the way you are without trying to live up to the expectations of others. It’s a cute story that is unique from anything you’ve seen before. The film is very well done and it’s believable with the characters and the way it’s put together.

Bazi AdOkay, so Penelope isn’t going to win any Oscars, but it’s a good family film with a really good message and our kids like it and so did we. We would recommend this movie and it should make for a really good rental when it comes out on DVD.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Miss PettigrewBecky and I went to see Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Friday. The Fandango website at Miss Pettigrew Lives fo a Day describes the movie as follows:

“In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must – for the first time in two decades – seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level – as “social secretary.” Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams).”

The Review

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

BASEketball full Dead Man buy

is more like watching a play than a movie. It was done quite well though and it was a good story about not judging a person by their outward appearance and that tough times can change anyone, if they let them. The story was rather interesting and there are a number of twists and turns in the plot. The acting of the two women, played by Frances McDormand and Amy Adams, was really great ,although the men in the movie were a bit overbearing. The chemistry between the main characters and their differences in opinion about life, telling the truth and men was quite entertaining.

Bazi AdBecky and I both liked the movie, although we would suggest waiting for the rental rack to see it. It was a good flick, but it wasn’t a great flick. Probably because it was more like a play than a movie. Since the cost for a movie at the theater is now two to three gallons of gas in your tank, you should probably wait to see this one at home.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Bank Job

Bank JobBecky and I went to see the new thriller The Bank Job at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Friday. The Fandango website at The Bank Job

BASEketball dvdrip

describes the movie as follows:

“A car dealer with a dodgy past and new family, Terry (Jason Statham) has always avoided major-league scams. But when Martine (Saffron Burrows), a beautiful model from his old neighborhood, offers him a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London’s Baker Street, Terry recognizes the opportunity of a lifetime. Martine targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don’t realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets – secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal that spans London’s criminal underworld, the highest echelons of the British government, and the Royal Family itself…the true story of a heist gone wrong…in all the right ways.”

The Review
The Bank Job is based on a true story about an amateur bank robbery that took place in the 1970’s. It was fast paced and kept our interest from start to finish. The film was done very well with the look and feel of London in the 1970’s and the acting was very good. It kind of reminded me of Ocean’s 11 with a crew of misfits that decided to rob a bank, only with much more realism and it was pretty entertaining.

Freebie AdThe characters in the film were interesting and there were parts of it that were pretty funny, like when their hired “lookout” on the walkie talkie gets picked up by a Ham radio operator who calls the police. However, be aware that there is nudity and some serious graphic violence. The movie is definitely rated R, so not the best bet for kids.

Becky rated it as a Rental and I thought it was Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Semi-Pro

Semi-ProBecky and I went to see the new comedySemi-Pro at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Friday. The Fandango website at Semi-Pro describes the movie as follows:

“In 1976, singer Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) uses the profits from his one-and-only hit single to fulfill his longtime dream of owning a basketball team. Jackie’s team, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league, and what’s more, the franchise may fold when the ABA and NBA announce plans to merge. It’s up to Jackie and the Tropics to turn their game around and slam-dunk their chance for survival.”

The Review
Semi-Pro is another really stupid flick starring Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson. The story was actually really funny, but the problem with this flick is that it’s so juvenile that it should have been done as a PG film directed toward kids. Unfortunately, it’s loaded with vulgarity that totally wrecks the film. It’s just a raunchy flick and most of the laughs come from that type of comedy instead of anything that’s really funny.

Freebie AdIf you liked Talladega Nights you will probably like this film too, but Talladega was much better and not nearly as stupid as Semi-Pro. Woody was much better in this movie than Will with a character that actually had some depth, compared to Will’s character Jackie Moon (love the name), who was a complete moron. It reminded me of Anchorman, which was another Will Ferrell movie that I thought was a disaster.

Semi-Pro is like a cross between Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory and Anchorman and it’s without a doubt a rental at best. I don’t know anybody who walked out of the movie and didn’t think they just wasted their time. What was really amazing is how many kids were in this movie and it’s for sure a rated R movie. Don’t bring your kids to this, even if they want to go, you’ll be sorry you brought them along. Unless you’re a total deadbeat Dad who doesn’t care about what influences your kids.

Becky rated it as a Rental and I thought it was a Don’t Bother. It was just far too stupid to warrant watching ever again, except for maybe when they figure out how to put it on T.V. and can get rid of a good portion of the film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Charlie Bartlett

Charlie BartlettBecky and I went to see the comedyCharlie Bartlett at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado last week. The Yahoo website at Charlie Bartlett describes the movie as follows:

“Charlie Bartlett has been kicked out of every private school he ever attended. And now that he’s moved on to public school, he’s simply getting pummeled. But when Charlie discovers that the kids who surround him–the outcast and the popular alike–are secretly in desperate need, his entrepreneurial spirit takes over. Hanging up his shingle in the Boys’ restroom, Charlie becomes an underground, not to mention under-aged, shrink who only listens to the private confessions of his schoolmates, and makes the imprudent decision to hand out the pills he’s proffered from his own psychiatric sessions.”

The Review
Charlie Bartlett was a very different film that we both enjoyed. I thought it was a riot. The kid in this flick was great, it’s a bit far fetched, but funny and fun. Robert Downey Jr. was great as the mixed up school Principal and confused father. The story was really goofy about a spoiled rich kid who has some Daddy issues, Charlie, who continues to get kicked out of private school for his illegal entrepreneur activities until he lands in the public school system and finds a new field of expertise.

Freebie Ad Life of Brian movie download Charlie realizes that his family is a bit different since he has a psychiatrist on staff for his personal issues. He also realizes that the kids he is going to school with also have issues and his idea is to listen to their problems and help solve them. There is quite a bit of prescription drug use in this film, but there are consequences for his actions and that makes for a good film.

We both thought it was an interesting flick. Becky rated it as a Rental and I thought it was Worth The Trip.
