John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Mortdecai

mordecaiBecky and I went to see the new movie Mortdecai at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO yesterday with our friends Hope and Chris. The Fandango website at Mortdecai describes the movie as follows…

“Lionsgate and OddLot Entertainment team up for this action comedy starring Johnny Depp as Charles Mortdecai, a roguish art dealer in search of a stolen painting that could hold the code to a forgotten Nazi bank account that’s rife with riches. Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, and Olivia Munn co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi”

The Review: The Rotten Tomatoes website gave this film a terrible review, but Fandango gave it a much favorable review. Which is one of the reasons why I am skeptical about many of the review sites that are out there, but we decided to go and see it last night anyway.  Our friend Chris is not a big Johnny Depp fan and he liked it and thought it was funny.

I really liked this movie and thought it was really well done.  Gwyneth Paltrow was really great in this film, as the wife of Mortdecai who is played by Johnny Depp and his man servant “Jacque” played by Paul Bettany really made the movie.  I thought the writing was very well done and it was Directed well also.

The film reminded me a little bit of the Pink Panther movies where the inspector was a ding dong, but the character was still funny.  This is how this film is with Johnny Depp’s character, but he is a bit more intelligent than the famous inspector in those films. There are some good laughs and plot twists in this movie and the entire cast did a great job on this movie.  It is too bad that it’s not doing well at the box office.  I think Depp was better in this movie than in the film Dark Shadows that he did a few years ago that was a whacky comedy.

We all liked it, but I definitely liked it more than Becky did.  She thought it was “okay”, probably more of a rental than being actually worth the trip. I thought it was really well done and was somewhat of a sophisticated comedy, if there is such a thing. When you see it you will know what I mean, but it could be because it takes place mostly in London.

I recommend it and I will probably see it again when it comes out on Netflix or on DVD.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Boy Next Door

TheBoyNextDoorBecky and I went to see the new movie The Boy Next Door at the AMC Theaters in Littleton, CO this Weekend with our friends. The Fandango website at The Boy Next Door describes the movie as follows…

“Neglected by her adulterous husband and left feeling particularly vulnerable as her marriage crumbles, lonely teacher Claire (Jennifer Lopez) has an affair with a younger neighbor (Ryan Guzman) that turns terrifying as his fiery lust morphs into dangerous obsession. John Corbett, Ian Nelson, and Kristin Chenoweth co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi..”

The Review: We went to see this new Jennifer Lopez flick with our friends Mark and Maria at this AMC Theater in Littleton on Friday and the seats were pretty amazing.  You could recline them like a lazy boy and put your feat up, which was super cool.  The movie though was not so cool.

Jennifer Lopez gets it on with a young “boy toy” next door, who was supposed to be a distraught teenager that is in her classroom and he looked like he was about 21 years of age.  Probably, so that she could have this incredibly racy sex scene with an adult posing as a minor, but that wasn’t the real problem.  The real problem was this movie was not very good.  It was whacky.  The police never showed up during the film when they would have arrested this kid numerous times the way that our schools are in lock down today.  It was way too far fetched and pretty stupid.

None of us thought this movie was worth the price of admission.  We thought it wouldn’t even be very good as a rental, so we’re rating it as a don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of American Sniper

american-sniperBecky and I went to see the new movie American Sniper at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO this Weekend with our friends.  The Fandango website at American Sniper describes the movie as follows…

“Biopic of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), the most-celebrated sniper in American military history. In the aftermath of 9/11, Kyle decides to serve his country by becoming a Navy SEAL. But with each tour of duty, he grows more detached from his wife and children…”

The Review: American Sniper is a true story about Chris Kyle that stars Bradley Cooper.  The film is directed by Clint Eastwood and it’s one of the best films he has made, definitely the best in years.  Bradley Cooper is amazing in this film and so are all the other actors, but he really does an amazing job playing this American war hero.  He should win an award for this movie for sure.

The movie is long, but it doesn’t feel long.  It’s very disturbing at times and shows the harsh realities of war and what it does to people.  The cost that has been paid to fight terrorism has been a high price to pay for sure and this film illustrates the sacrifices of American men and women and their families, as well as those who live there as well.  American Sniper is one of the best movies we have seen in a long time and it’s along the lines of Unbroken, Fury and others that show the danger and terrible sides of war.  It is very heavy at times and difficult to watch, but at the end of the film the whole theater applauded it had that strong of an impact on the audience.

We both recommend this movie and definitely thought it was a film you don’t want to miss.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Blackhat

blackhatBecky and I went to see the new Chris Hemsworth movie Blackhat at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO this Weekend.  The Fandango website at Blackhat describes the movie as follows…

“An American/Chinese joint anti-cybertheft task force races to root out an elusive hacker based in Southeast Asia in this Legendary Pictures thriller written, produced, and directed by Michael Mann, and starring Chris Hemsworth. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi…”

The Review: We were really looking forward to seeing this film since it seemed like it was going to be a great thriller about how someone could use cyber terrorism in a way we hadn’t seen before.  Instead it was over two hours of non-stop boredom.  The cinematography was terrible with the camera moving all over the place.  The Director shouldn’t be allowed to direct a Youtube video since it was on step above a bad Chinese feature film.  This movie was really terrible.

I won’t bore you with all the details, but this movie did not delivery in the least.  It was so bad that I got up at one point and looked at Becky and said, “Let me know what happens.  No, let me know if anything happens.” because really this is a film where nothing happens.  They take a minute showing people walk up stairs or get into a car or climb into bed.  It’s so incredibly painful to watch that we wouldn’t recommend even renting this film.

There you have it.  This is a big don’t bother for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Taken 3

Taken3Becky and I went to see the new Liam Neeson movie Taken 3 at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO this Weekend.  The Fandango website at Taken 3 describes the movie as follows…

“The chase is on once again in this sequel from Taken 2 director Olivier Megaton, and screenwriters Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi…”

The Review: I didn’t have much interest in seeing this movie after watching Taken and Taken 2.  We figured by now they should figure out how not to get taken, but it was actually much better than we expected.  The story is much more clever than the previous two films because they didn’t actually have anyone get taken.

The story picks up with his wife played by Famke Janssen is married to a super rich dude, who is involved with the Russian Mafia that ends up putting her life and the life of their daughter at risk.  Liam’s job is to find these gangsters and take them out, while trying not to get caught by the police.  The movie is pretty action packed and it’s much better than we expected.

Taken 3 is not a great movie, but it’s not terrible either.  It’s entertaining as an action thriller and not overly complicated, but it is pretty far fetched most of the time since Liam Neeson is getting to be old and beating up on these guys in their twenties.  He also would have a hard time evading the police with all the technology they have to track people today.  However, if you can look past most of the problems with the movie it was a pretty good movie overall.  We both liked it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Imitation Game

imitationgame_posterBecky and I went to see the new movie The Imitation Game at the Regal Theaters in Lone Tree, CO.  The Fandango website at The Imitation Game describes the movie as follows…

“Alan Turing, a pioneer of computers, led a group of scholars to crack the codes of Germany’s WWII Enigma machine. A genius under nail-biting pressure helped to save millions of lives and was ultimately convicted for the crime of homosexuality.”

The Review: If you have read our reviews for any length of time, you know that I often accuse Hollywood of having an agenda that promotes homosexuality as a normal lifestyle, showing Christians and others who disagree with homosexual behavior as being evil and catering to a special interest group.  If you watch enough movies, you will almost always see the gay and lesbian lifestyle being promoted like a car commercial built into the film.

Although this film is about a man who lived in Europe during WWII and was a homosexual it is not a film that promotes an agenda in a negative or positive way, but simply deals with his personal life as who he was.  It is the fascinating true story about a brilliant man who struggled in a number of areas of his life, especially relating to and speaking with people and he happened to be a homosexual.  He lived at a time when homosexuality was unacceptable behavior and how they treated homosexuals was totally unacceptable.  It was very sad to see the government focus on that area of his life, especially after what he had done to save millions of lives.

The story is amazing and the film is one of the best we have seen all year.  Alan Turing was a real war hero who saved millions of lives by cracking the Enigma code used by the Nazi’s.  The film shows his brilliance and the amazing team of people that he worked with as well as the start of the British government lying to its people and doing covert spy operations through MI6.  It has a sad ending because of how he was treated by his government and others.  He was a brilliant man on the level of Albert Einstein and has been virtually unknown.  Had he lived in our time he would have been hailed as a genius.

The acting is fantastic by everyone involved, including the child actor playing the main character and Kiera Knightly was exceptional as well.  It is extremely well done and should win a number of awards.  We definitely recommend this movie as one not to miss for sure.
