John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Fighter

Becky and I went to see The Fighter over Christmas week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at The Fighter describes the movie as follows:

“‘Mark Wahlberg stars in Paramount Pictures’ inspirational docudrama exploring the remarkable rise of Massachusetts-born, junior welterweight title winner “Irish” Micky Ward. A determined pugilist whose career in the ring was shepherded by his loyal half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale) — a hard-living boxer-turned-trainer whose own career in the ring was nearly sent down for the count due to drugs and crime — perennial underdog Irish Micky rebounded from a disheartening series of defeats to win both the WBU Intercontinental Lightweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title thanks to a fierce combination of determination and hard work. David O. Russell directs from a script by 8 Mile’s Scott Silver and Paul Attanasio (The Bourne Ultimatum)…”

The Review
The Fighter is a great true story about a professional fighter who is living in the shadow of his older brother, who is now a washed out former contender and drug addict. The film is amazing and it has plenty of heart about this boxer who is facing tremendous personal challenges while trying to not get sucked into the web of his brother’s destructive lifestyle.

As the story moves on Micky Ward meets a woman and then goes on a mission to become a World Champion prize fighter and break free from his brother and family’s control of his life. The Fighter has plenty of emotion and action. It’s very intense at times as you watch the struggles of the man in dealing with his family and friends.

The acting is great, the characters are entertaining and engaging and this movie should also be up from some Oscar nominations because they are played so well. It’s a great flick and we both loved it! I heard that Mark Wahlberg trained for years to become a boxer in order to play this role. It showed in the film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Black Swan

Becky and I went to see Black Swan over Christmas week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at Black Swan describes the movie as follows:

“‘Black Swan’ follows the story of Nina (Natalie Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her…”

The Review
Black Swan is what a buddy of mine and I refer to as, “the lesbian horror flick”. The acting is fantastic and Natalie Portman does a great job in her role as a psychotic ballet dancer.  The movie poster pretty much sums up this movie and what you can expect.

Unfortunately, the story is really lame with way too much filler as the ballerina tries to find her way in the leading role as the white and black swan. The movie has plenty of suspense and a great deal of drama. The characters are rather interesting with sex, drugs and ballet instead of rock and roll. Black Swan comes complete with sexual fantasies by Natalie Portman’s character of her fellow ballet characters and other people in the film. Her Mom is a total lunatic that has helped create this whacky ballerina, along with some other whacko’s in the world of ballet.

The movie has some deep meaning that goes along with the ballet that it’s portraying and that’s why there is so much buzz around this movie, but it didn’t deliver for Becky and I. We both thought it was a rental at best and I thought it was a total waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of True Grit

Becky and I went to see True Grit over Christmas week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at True Grit describes the movie as follows:

“14-year-old mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father’s killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen’s adaptation of Charles Portis’ original novel. Sticking more closely to the source material than the 1969 feature adaptation starring Western icon John Wayne, the Coens’ True Grit tells the story from the young girl’s perspective, and re-teams the celebrated filmmaking duo with their No Country for Old Men producing partner Scott Rudin. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper co-star…”

The Review
True Grit is a remake of the original John Wayne movie that won him an Oscar and this time Rooster Cogburn is played by Jeff Bridges and the Texas Ranger is played by Matt Damon. This story is Directed by the Coen brothers and it’s based on the book instead of being a remake of the first movie.

The story is great. There isn’t a great deal of action, as you might expect for a name like True Grit. It’s still very exciting though and is a classic Western with plenty of details about the Wild West. One of the neat things about this movie is the language. They apparently hadn’t discovered apostrophe’s yet, so instead of saying “don’t” the characters say “do not”. It’s more of a character story than anything else, about three people and how they came to be together in a manhunt.

The acting in this movie is superb. I’ll be surprised if there are not Oscar nominations again for this movie for best actor, best supporting actor and for best picture. All of the actors and actresses in this movie played their parts way too well. They were amazing and definitely made the movie worth seeing for sure. The story is really good and even though it’s a remake it’s different and worth seeing on the big screen for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Little Fockers

Becky and I went to see the new film Little Fockers over Christmas week with the kids at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at Little Fockers describes the movie as follows:

“A birthday party for the twins gives Greg an opportunity to redeem himself after he takes a job that raises the suspicions of his overbearing father-in-law, Jack (Robert De Niro), in this installment of the hit comedy series. Greg (Ben Stiller) and Pam (Teri Polo) have been together for ten years, and now they’re the proud parents of two adorable twins. But money is tight, and in order to keep his family afloat, devoted nurse Greg takes a second job working for a drug company. But that development doesn’t sit well with Jack, whose previous suspicions regarding his hapless son-in-law soon come back in full force after learning of this development. With the twins’ birthday fast approaching, the proud parents invite the entire clan over to celebrate in style, including Kevin (Owen Wilson), who still carries a torch for his pretty ex Pam. As the festivities get under way, Greg takes every opportunity available to prove to Jack that he’s fully capable of providing for his family. Now Greg has one last chance to prove that he’s trustworthy. Should he fail, the circle of trust will be broken for good. Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Laura Dern, and Jessica Alba co-star…”

The Review
Little Fockers is the third installment of the Gaylord Focker saga that started with movie Meet The Parents. If you liked the first two movies, Meet the Parents and Meet The Fockers, you will like Little Fockers as well. I have to say that we didn’t expect much from this film, but it was very funny.

The story is much like the original film with the conflict between Focker and his Father-In-Law, Jack Burns, played by Robert De Niro. We took the kids and at times it was not appropriate for children at times, but it was funny. Many of the jokes went over our kids heads and it was much funnier than we expected it to be.

All of the characters from the first two films were in this movie and that made it even better than expected. The dynamics between the characters was great. We all liked it and thought it was a good movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The King’s Speech

Becky and I went to see the new film, The King’s Speech this week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO. The MovieFone website at The King’s Speech describes the movie as follows:

“After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle.

Based on the true story of King George VI, ‘The King’s Speech’ follows the Royal Monarch’s quest to find his voice…”

The Review
The King’s Speech is going to be a classic film for sure and probably win a number of awards this year. It’s extremely well done with fantastic acting and a great true story about the King of England and his two sons who are heirs to his throne.

The story is really amazing. The Duke of York, who is the second born son of the King has a speech problem and cannot speak publicly, or even privately for that matter, without stuttering. The Duke’s wife seeks out a speech therapist to help her husband with his speech problem and she finds a common man who is an expert in his profession, played by Geoffrey Rush. The chemistry between the two characters is great.

The language is rough at times, but it’s appropriate for the situation. The King’s Speech is very entertaining and we really enjoyed it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Becky and I took the kid’s to see the new film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at The Chronicles of Narnia describes the movie as follows:

“Upon returning to Narnia to join Prince Caspian for a voyage on the majestic royal vessel known as The Dawn Treader, Lucy, Edmund, and their cousin Eustace encounter merfolk, dragons, dwarves, and a wandering band of lost warriors. As the edge of the world draws near, their remarkable adventure at sea sails toward an exciting, yet uncertain, conclusion…”

The Review
The Chronicles of Narnia series is an interesting fantasy movie. Many Christians love these movies because of the Christian undertones with the lion representing Jesus in this fantasy world and since it was written by C.S. Lewis. It just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t see any difference between magic in these films and the Harry Potter series for example where they battle good and evil.

The original, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was very well done, but the sequels have not been nearly as good. They are entertaining, but I think the characters in the movie are just not very exciting to watch. The story is fun, the special effects are good, but the acting and the directing is pretty lame.

In this installment there are only two main characters in the film with a new child, their cousin that is introduced and they seem to be a bit too clueless throughout the movie. In fairness, our kids enjoyed this last movie and thought it was really exciting and fun to watch. Becky and I found it boring. She almost fell asleep and I was not far behind her. Unless you’re going to bring some children with you, you might want to wait for this one to come out as a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of TRON: Legacy 3D

Becky and I took the kid’s to see the new film TRON last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at TRON: Legacy describes the movie as follows:

“”Tron: Legacy’ is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Helund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous…”

The Review
TRON: Legacy is a great flick and I have to tell you that I was really skeptical about this movie. I saw the original and I remembered how much I didn’t like the first film, so I had really low expectations for this one.

However, Becky got us a deal on seeing TRON: Legacy IMAX 3D through an Internet website where it ended up costing us about $25 to take all five of us to the big screen and the screen is huge. This was our first experience in going to the IMAX and seeing a film in 3D on that monster screen. The night before we were cracking up about the line to get into see this movie, but after seeing it we were impressed. We definitely picked a great flick for the IMAX 3D version and we have to recommend it.

We all really enjoyed the movie and the special effects, except for Becky who thought it was a Rental. It was just a bit too much science fiction for her. I think Becky got the tickets on some Deal of the Day online, so I’m not sure if you can duplicate that option, otherwise it’s about $16.50 to see it at primetime rates. Great flick though, so make sure you catch it this Holiday Season.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of How Do You Know

Becky and I went to see the new Reese Witherspoon film, How Do You Know last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO. The MSN Movie website at How Do You Know describes the movie as follows:

“‘Director James L. Brooks returns to the helm for this ensemble comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson, and centering on the story of a passionate athlete who finds herself romantically torn between a narcissistic baseball star and a straight-laced businessman. As far back as Lisa (Witherspoon) can remember, her life has been defined by sports. Then, in the blink of an eye, she’s cut from the team. Her identity in crisis as she attempts to regain her footing in life, Lisa begins dating Matty (Wilson), a Major League Baseball pitcher and notorious womanizer. Meanwhile, terminally honest businessman George (Rudd) finds himself on the road to financial ruin or worse after being wrongly implicated in a financial crime…”

The Review
How Do You Know is a funny romantic comedy about a girl who is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life after her career as an athlete comes to an abrupt end. Reese Witherspoon plays the main character Lisa and she does a good job in this movie. Becky commented that anytime they showed her she had on a pair of shorts or a dress to show off her legs and she definitely got in shape for this film.

Paul Rudd plays a business man who is in crisis because of his narcissistic father played by Jack Nicholson that has put him in a tough situation with the Federal Government. Those two characters were great together, although Jack is showing his age.

Owen Wilson plays a baseball player who is a crack-up because he’s so incredibly full of himself. There are some good lines from his character and the others.

Overall we both really liked this movie. It was worth the trip in our opinion, but for some people may think it’s a better rental. Should be a good date movie though.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Tourist

Becky and I went to see the new Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film, The Tourist last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO with our friends Rod and Kimberly. The Fandango website at The Tourist describes the movie as follows:

“‘Revolves around Frank, an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path…”

The Review
The Tourist has plenty of Star Power with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The story is very clever and keeps you guessing, much like that movie The Thomas Crown Affair. I have to give credit to Rod and Kimberly for that one, but it’s much like that movie with some mystery and the fact that it keeps you guessing up until the end of the film.

The Tourist is really well done. The cinematography and setting in Italy is very cool. The characters are very mysterious and interesting. Johnny and Angelina work very well together in this movie, so they cast the roles good and it was Directed well also. The story though is fun and that’s what I liked about it.

Becky fell asleep the first time we saw it and she went back and saw it again on her own with a girlfriend. She liked it much better the second time she said because she knew what was going on in the movie. It will make you think the first time around because there are plenty of twists and turns with the characters, which is what I thought made it such an entertaining film.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one. Rod and Kimberly both liked it and so did Becky and I.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Love and Other Drugs

Becky and I went to see the flick, Love and Other Drugs on opening night at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Love and Other Drugs describes the movie as follows:

“‘A salesman competes in the cutthroat world of pharmaceuticals to hawk a male performance enhancement drug. Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman…”

The Review
Love and Other Drugs is really summed up in the description above. There isn’t much to this movie beyond it being about a salesman, who is trying to figure out how he can sell more drugs to doctors and rise to the top of his drug company to impress his family. Supposedly, it’s the drug Viagra that is going to make him a superstar. After all, he’s not only a great salesman, but good at picking up women and having sex with them.

This movie should have been called “Sex and Other Drugs” because that’s about all Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway do for two hours. It’s like watching a pornographic movie after a while and you’re wondering how shallow this movie can really be. He does remember her name. We didn’t know that the movie poster of the two of them in bed would be pretty much the entire movie, just in different settings with some other shallow characters thrown in as filler. If that’s what you’re looking for this is definitely your movie, otherwise it pretty much sucked.

In fairness, there is this whole element of Anne Hathaway’s character having an incurable disease and since he works for a drug company that’s supposed to have some message in it I guess. The message is that the drug companies are more concerned about selling sex drugs than curing diseases, not that sex doesn’t sell since that’s all this movie is selling for two hours. The main character also isn’t sure if he wants to stay with a woman he’s falling in love with since she is going to die from her disease, but he sure likes being with her.

In addition, we both thought that it really paints doctors in a bad light as nothing more than glorified drug pushers, who are looking for their next thrill ride and perk. Not all of them of course, but several in the film are just concerned about their perks from the drug companies and not their patients health and that was a bit ridiculous.

Overall, we found this movie to be a waste of time and Hollywood fantasy land. We can’t recommend it, it’s a rental at best.
