John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Lucky One

Becky and I went to see the movie, The Lucky One at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO a  week ago.  The MovieFone website at The Lucky One describes the movie as follows…

“Zac Efron stars as a soldier whose obsession with a photograph leads him on a lucky streak and unlikely romance. Scott Hicks directs the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel. Taylor Schilling co-stars….”

The Review
The Lucky One
is a major chick flick starring Zac Efron and it’s written by the same guy who wrote The Notebook and Message In A Bottle.  If you remember how slow those movies were, this one is just as slow.  It moves really slow and the guy in the movie is way too perfect, so it’s completely ridiculous.

The story starts out pretty good with this Marine who survives his Tours in Iraq and Afghanistan when he finds a photo of a beautiful girl, only to have his buddies get killed.  He decides that if he makes it back from the battlefield that he’s going to track this woman down and thank her.  It turns out that he meets her and starts working for her, then becomes her Hero.

The movie has all kinds of problems with it.  It’s boring, it’s slow, it’s contrived and ridiculous.  The people in the film are good looking and have good chemistry, the acting is good, but there are plots within the plot, like the jealous ex-husband and their son who is a geek.  Then you have the ex-husband being a cop, only because his Daddy is the Mayor.  The movie is just kind of goofy.

I thought Becky would like it, but she didn’t either and thought it was dull.  It’s not often we agree with the Critics on films, but they got this one right.  It’s a rental at best and I would rate it a Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Hunger Games

Becky and I went to see the movie, The Hunger Games at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO a couple weeks ago with our son Conroy.  The Fandango website at The Hunger Games describes the movie as follows…

“Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains…”

The Review
The Hunger Games
is a movie based on the best selling book series by the same name.  Our son Conroy has read the book, so he was really excited to see the movie.  Becky and I had no idea what this movie was about and I was pretty shocked by it.

In fairness, I missed the ending of this film, but I saw all of it, except about a half hour.  I didn’t like what I saw of this movie though.  It takes place in the future and it reminded me of the film Rollerball, where people compete to the death, only in this installment it’s children facing each other in a death match.

I had a problem with the plot of this film since it’s a story about a world gone nuts after a nuclear war that has decided to sacrifice children in a game to the death based on a drawing.  I have no idea how this could be so well received?  It’s a pretty sick concept, but it’s getting rave reviews.  The story centers around a girl who takes the place of her younger sister who is selected in the drawing because she knows her sister will for sure die in the event.

The other thing that is disturbing is that this who event like Rollerball is entertainment, to watch children kill one another.  The saving part of the film is that the girl who is the heroin of the film, has a conscious and doesn’t want to kill anyone, but is instead simply trying to stay alive and make the best of a bad situation she’s found herself.

This movie didn’t do it for me, but Becky and Conroy both enjoyed it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Cabin in the Woods

Becky and I went to see the movie, The Cabin in the Woods at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at The Cabin in the Woods describes the movie as follows…

“Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out…”

The Review
The Cabin in the Woods
is the second remake that we got to see this Weekend, the first being Lockout that I wrote a review about that is basically a remake of Escape from New York and now the campy 80’s flick Evil Dead in The Cabin in the Woods.

Evil Dead was a terrible movie the first time and it was even worse in this rendition.  The Cabin in the Woods can be summed up in one simple word – “terrible”.  We should have walked out on this one for sure.  The movie is really bad and yet so many fans love it and it has had great reviews.  Why?  We do not know.

I’m always up for a good spooky supernatural type horror film, like the Ring, Drag Me To Hell or Paranormal Activity and I even thought the film Scream was original and spooky.  This film is just a total gore, slasher type movie with a really stupid plot that apparently horror fans thought was really creative.  It’s a bit like Hunger Games meets Evil Dead, where there is a sub-plot of scientists, controlling the cabin in the woods where the five guests will be sacrificed to the ancient gods.  There is even a cameo appearance by Sigourney Weaver, but that couldn’t save this movie.

Becky and I both hated this film and it turned out to be a complete waste of time. We can’t recommend this even as a good rental.  It’s definitely in the category of Don’t Bother, like really don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Lockout

Becky and I went to see the movie, Lockout this Saturday at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at Lockout describes the movie as follows…

“A man is wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. He’s offered his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates…”

The Review
Lockout
stars Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace in what I would call a remake of “Escape from New York” with a few twists.  The first twist is that the maximum security prison is in space, the second twist is that the President’s daughter is being held by the prisoners instead of the President and she is a hot babe with a chance to get involved with the lead character.

The final twist is that the prison is now owned and subsidized by a corporation, which will probably happen in the future because the Government has the most incompetent people in charge and really can’t do anything right.  In this case though, the corporations have been doing experiments on prisoners, but this is more of a side note though because this movie is all over the place.

Lockout is a terrible action movie that has senseless violence, makes no sense. zero chemistry between the main characters and tries to combine comedy with a thriller action film that doesn’t work very well.  There are a few good laughs, but it’s very odd given the situation taking place in the film.

The main character is borderline super hero, much like the Schwarzenegger and Stallone movies of the 1980’s and 1990’s that were totally absurd.  Judge Dredd would be a good example of this type of movie, so if you liked that strange kind of action movie this may be for you.  It’s definitely a remake of Escape from New York with Snake Plissken, only the main character is called “Snow” this time around.  Escape from New York is a much better cult classic than this one.

Becky hated this film and I had to wake her up and get her to go buy some extra popcorn.  I thought it was okay, but it’s definitely a rental and not worth the price of admission.  It’s one of those guy films where your wife is out of town and you’re bored, so you decide to go rent Lockout or you’re up late one night and it’s on Demand.
