John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Help

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Help last week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Help, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“A 1960s-era Mississippi debutante sends her community into an uproar by conducting a series of probing interviews with the black servants behind some of her community’s most prominent families. Skeeter (Emma Stone) has just graduated from college, and she’s eager to launch her career as a writer. In a moment of inspiration, Skeeter decides to focus her attention on the black female servants who work in her community. Her first subject is Aibileen (Viola Davis), the devoted housekeeper who has been employed by Skeeter’s best friend’s family for years.”

The Review
The Help is definitely a Chic Flick that is going to have more appeal to women than men. When we saw the film, there was a ratio of two to one women to men, but this is a film that should be seen by everyone. It deals with discrimination in the South during the Civil Rights movement, but how it does it is amazing, by looking at racial injustice from the perspective of black Nannies raising white children.

The characters in this movie are great. Emma Stone was perfect for her role as a writer, who took up the cause of the Nannies, even when they were afraid to speak out. Not only does the film deal with the Nannies and their plight, but shows the challenges white men and women faced for speaking the truth. It’s a great film and a must see. I am betting it will win many awards.

Becky and are are both givig The Help a “Don’t Miss It”. Be sure and put it on your list.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of One Day

Becky talked me into seeing the new movie One Day today at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at One Day describes the movie as follows:

“For 20 years, an idealist (Anne Hathaway) and a wealthy playboy (Jim Sturgess) reunite on the 15th day of July.”

The Review
One Day was a movie that I wasn’t sure I wanted to see, but I decided that since it starred Anne Hathaway I would go check it out.  I’m glad I did, I liked it.  It’s definitely an adult show, so teenagers are not going to be too fond of this one.  It’s a serious love story about a couple that should be together, but the guy can’t seem to figure it out for twenty years.

It’s a little boring at times as you go through twenty years of following the two people, but it’s an interesting look at relationships and how people can miss it.  Guys be forewarned, this is definitely a Chic flick and it’s a bit serious at times.  It’s pretty sad, but is a good film.

Becky liked it more than I did, but we both thought it was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Fright Night

Becky and I went to see the new movie Fright Night on Friday night at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Rod & Kimberly. The Fandango website at Fright Night describes the movie as follows:

“Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.”

The Review
Fright Night was an adaptation of the original 1980’s cult classic about a teenage boy who has a vampire move in next store to him.  He watches out his window as the vampire is feeding on his neighbors, but unfortunately the vampire knows that he’s watching him and he doesn’t like it.

This new version of Fright Night is not much of a comedy-horror like the first one.  There are a few jokes here and there, like a comment about the Twilight book series, which was pretty funny, but it’s definitely a horror flick.  It is more like watching a serial killer movie or a smart version of JAWS with a Land Shark and it was spooky at times.  Colin Farrell is great as Jerry the vampire and the other characters and actors are great too.

The language is way worse than the first time around, but the characters and vampires are not anything like the Twilight series.  When these vampires get into the sunlight they explode, like traditional vampire movies and they are not friendly.

I liked this movie and so did Rod & Kimberly, but Becky didn’t like it that much.  If you like vampire movies and are in the mood for a fright night, this is a creepy one.
