John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Grey

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Grey this Weekend at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at  The Grey describes the movie as follows…

“Watch Liam Neeson as an unlikely hero who is forced to lead a group of roughneck guys in their fight to survive and return home when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling injuries and merciless weather, the men must escape the icy elements — and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt — before their time runs out.”

The Review
The Grey is a flick where if you’ve seen the trailer for the film, you’ve seen the entire movie.  We went and saw this film with our friends Mark and Maria and three out of the four of us thought this film was terrible.  We were expecting a great movie and it was a dog, which I guess is fitting.

Here’s the movie in a nutshell.  Watch a depressed guy get on an airplane that crashes in the wilderness of Alaska with only seven survivors.  After the plane crash, the audience will spend the remaining two hours watching the seven survivors all die in the wilderness in a variety of ways.  Like that television show 1,000 Ways To Die, only in this film there are 7 ways to die.

This was the best they could come up with for this movie?  The movie poster was the best part of this movie.  I can’t believe Neeson decided to do this film.  It was boring, the animation was a joke, and even the wolves looked like giant puppets.  The Director or the Screen Writers must have sat around and said, “Let’s have one guy die by getting eaten by wolves, then will have another guy fall to his death and another guy drown, and…” it’s really bad.  It reminded me of that low budget film Frozen, where some people get left on a ski lift and freeze to death.

We’re not going to recommend this one even as a good rental.  It’s a waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Becky and I went to see the new movie Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close today at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO. The Fandango website at  Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close describes the movie as follows…

“Oskar (Thomas Horn), who lost his father (Tom Hanks) in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, is convinced that his dad left a final message for him somewhere in the city. Upon finding a mysterious key in his father’s closet, Oskar sets out in search of the lock it fits. Feeling disconnected from his grieving mother (Sandra Bullock) and driven by a tirelessly active mind, Oskar has a journey of discovery that takes him beyond his loss and leads to a greater understanding of the world.”

The Review
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is one of those movies where you will say “Wow!” too.  Seriously, I was not excited about seeing this film, figuring it was going to be one of those over-rated Hollywood films that they put out about 9-11 for cash and prizes.  In fact, I had to leave the New England Patriots & Baltimore Ravens AFC Championship game to catch this flick at 4pm with Becky because I had made her see Haywire on Friday.  She thought Haywire sucked so bad that I knew I wasn’t getting out of seeing this movie.

This movie did not disappoint.  It’s extremely loud and incredibly “heavy”, so be forewarned.  This movie is an emotional roller coaster.  Part of the reason that it’s such an emotional drain is because you live the horror of the 9-11 tragedy through a family that has gone through it personally with the loss of a husband and father.  The main character is trying to figure out why his Dad had to be taken away from him on that “Worst Day Ever” and bring closure to the tragedy.  His Mom, played by Sandra Bullock, is also trying to cope with her loss, while have a relationship with her son who is devastated.

There is plenty of heartbreak in this movie, but it also have a huge redemptive nature to the film that saves it and it’s really cool how the film brings everything together.  I have to say this is definitely a Don’t Miss It, even if you end up shedding a tear or two, it’s worth the price of admission.  It will certainly bring back memories of the “Worst Day Ever” and make you think about the families who had to deal with their loss of loved ones on that fateful day on 9-11.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Haywire

Becky and I went to see the new movie Haywire this Weekend at the AMC Castle Rock theater. The Fandango website at  Haywire describes the movie as follows…

“Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is a highly trained operative for a government security contractor. Her missions take her to the world’s most dangerous areas. After Mallory successfully frees a hostage journalist, she’s betrayed and left for dead by someone in her own agency. Knowing her survival depends on learning the truth behind the double-cross, Mallory uses her black-ops training to set a trap. But when things go awry, Mallory knows she’ll die unless she can turn the tables on her adversary.”

The Review
Haywire is a strange action flick with an all-star cast, including Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, and Antonio Banderas but it’s not a very good film.  It’s one of those “okay” movies about this woman, played by a less popular actress, who’s this bad-ass assassin and has been betrayed by the company she works for.  She’s now this hot chick on the screen, who changes her hair style as much as her clothes and on a mission to kick some butt and use her mad killer skills to get back at the people who betrayed her.

This is definitely a flick for guys who like action movies and want to look at a great looking woman do her tae-kwon-do moves because there isn’t much more to this movie.  It reminded me a little bit like SALT, with Angelina Jolie, but SALT was a way better movie because it actually had a good plot to go with the movie.  Haywire doesn’t have much substance though and is really disjointed.

Becky thought this movie was stupid and a total waste of time.  I kind of liked it because I’m a guy with testosterone and didn’t really care that the plot was a bit lame.  It was different enough and had enough action to be entertaining.  Even so, it’s more of a rental than a movie to pay the price of admission to go see at the theater, which is kind of crazy with all the big names that were in this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Contraband

Becky and I went to see the new Mark Wahlberg flick Contraband last week, while we were in Phoenix, AZ running the Rock & Roll Marathon. The Fandango website at  Contraband describes the movie as follows…

“Ex-smuggler Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) gave up his criminal ways long ago. But, he’s forced back into the game after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for a crime lord (Giovanni Ribisi), leaving Chris to settle the debt. With the help of his best friend (Ben Foster), Chris assembles a team to run to Panama to retrieve a fortune in counterfeit bills. When things go awry, Chris must call on his rusty skills to complete the task before his family pays the price.”

The Review
Contraband is a pretty good action flick starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale with plenty of twists and turns.  It’s rated R for being a violent film, which you would expect since it’s about smuggling.  If you can get past the violence and the language the story is a good one.

Mark Wahlberg is a good actor and fun to watch on the Big Screen.  The film is much more exciting than it is entertaining and it does make you wonder about what kind of crime and corruption are going on in America today.  Mark Wahlberg’s character is caught in the middle of a situation he doesn’t want to be involved in, which creates plenty of tension for the audience.

It has a number of plot twists and it’s not your typical shoot em’ up film where the main characters are invincible.  It’s definitely more real to life than most films with plenty of action, fast paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat.  Most people coming out of the theater really liked this movie.  The critics were not huge fans, but we thought it was worth the price of admission.  We both liked it and so did our friends that were with us.  It’s not a great film that is going to win any awards, but it was a pretty good action flick.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Iron Lady

Becky and I went to see the new Meryl Streep film The Iron Lady while we were in Phoenix, AZ last week running the Rock & Roll Marathon. The Fandango website at  The Iron Lady describes the movie as follows…

“The Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.”

The Review
The Iron Lady is beyond boring.  It moves at a snail’s pace for only an hour and forty-five minutes, but you would think it was much longer than it is.  It was mainly and elderly audience in this film, so we didn’t have to worry about anyone texting during this movie that’s for sure.  The acting is extremely good by everyone involved in the movie and I’m sure that Meryl Streep will win Best Actor for her role.

However, the historical accuracy is questionable and at times comical since they show about 45 seconds of Margaret Thatcher with Ronald Reagan, who she was very close with during her time as Prime Minister.  They show her and her husband getting blown up in a hotel and you wonder if that’s true or part of her delusional experiences from her dementia that came later in her life.  Most of the movie takes place in her sickly elderly state, with flashbacks to when she was a famous leader.

About the only thing “iron” about this woman according to the Director and Screen Writer is that she was a woman in a male dominated world.  Beyond that, they made it seem like she was the cause of England’s woes and that she made very bad decisions as though her dementia that came on later in life was the cause.  It was a bit absurd since the reality is that she was probably the best Prime Minister they have had and made some tough decisions that really helped her country in the long run.

It was a strange film that was really in bad taste since she is still alive and you would think they could have at least waited until she was dead to make a film of her talking to her dead husband and having fantasies about her past.  You have to wonder if any of it this film is real or just a fantasy of the Director.  Becky and I didn’t like this film and can’t recommend it.
