John & Becky’s Movie Review of Kick-Ass

Becky and I went to see the movie Kick-Ass on Friday at a small theater in Edwards, CO. The Fandango website at Kick-Ass describes the movie as follows:

“KICK-ASS tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime….”

The Review
Kick-Ass is about a guy who is tired of being abused and ripped off and seeing other people taken advantage of, so he decides to put on a super hero outfit and go out fighting crime with no skills whatsoever. It sounds like a great concept for a movie, but unfortunately this film is crude, over-the-top violent and disturbing.

The fact that so many movie critics like this film should tell you to run from it and save your money. Most of them apparently have the mentality of a fifth-grader and seem to think that seeing an 11 year old girl dressed like Britney Spears in her debut music video and then killing people is good entertainment.

The movie is much like Kill Bill with star power from Nicholas Cage and extreme violence in a comic book format. It reminded me of that film Spirit that also totally sucked with it’s non-stop violence and nothing worthwhile to offer the viewer, beyond watching people get beat-up or murdered.

We were amazed that so many young kids were in this film when it was rated R. The movie was completely crazy and that was the problem with the movie and I’m amazed how many people have seen it and liked it, especially the critics. It just goes to show how pathetic our society has become toward violence.  Hollywood has to become more and more creative in their ways of showing people being murdered to create a “good” film since people are hanging out a home killing people daily on their video game screens.

In this movie, they put a guy into a giant microwave and watch him explode and then all stand around and laugh, along with the audience. How is that funny? It used to be that only the Nazi’s found the idea of torturing and murdering people in cruel and unusual ways entertaining, but not anymore.  I remember seeing Marlon Brando in The Godfather when I was young and Brando’s character had the head of a horse cut-off and put in a guy’s bed and the audience cringed.

In this film, the mobsters microwave a guy and the audience laughed. I don’t think I’m that old, but maybe I’m too old now for this kind of a film or maybe I’m just not so immature that I think murdering people is supposed to be funny. In the movie Casino, Martin Scorsese, has two of the characters murdered with baseball bats and nobody in the theater was laughing. The audience thought it was horrible, but not in Kick-Ass, it’s a new form of humor to kill people and the more creative the better.

If that’s not insane enough for a way to make people laugh, which we didn’t find funny. They took an 11 year old girl and turned her into a killing machine with a sense of humor, like a deranged serial killer as Nicholas Cage’s daughter. Her name is Hit Girl and her role is to murder bad guys to make Daddy happy and that was beyond bad taste, it was sick. Her Dad even shoots her several times while she is wearing a bullet proof vest, so she knows what it feels like to be shot and that of course comes in handy since she gets shot toward the end of the film. We’ll probably hear on the Evening News down the road that some idiot will do the same thing with one of his kids that he accidentally kills and Hollywood Producers and the media will tell us there isn’t any correlation to this movie.  Well, I’ve said enough.

We both thought Kick-Ass was a terrible movie and definitely not worth the price of admission. We should have left and asked for our money back, but now we can save you from wasting your money on this film. Original? Yes. Pathetic? Extremely.
