I went to see the movie Spirit of the Marathon that was for one night only at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Thursday. It was $12.50 to get into see this one night event and to my surprise the theater was pretty packed. The Fandango website at Spirit of the Marathon describes the movie as follows:
“Back by popular demand! NCM Fathom presents an encore presentation of Spirit of the Marathon, the first ever non-fiction feature film to capture the drama and essence of the famed 26.2 mile running event. Filmed on four continents, the production brings together a diverse cast of amateur athletes and marathon luminaries. As six unique stories unfold, each runner prepares for and ultimately faces the challenge of the Chicago Marathon. Additionally, a “Behind-the-Scenes” featurette will include interviews with the director and producers as well as marathon veterans reminicscing about their first marathon experiences. The encore presentation of Spirit of the Marathon will be shown in select movie theatres for only one night, on February 21 at 7:30PM (local).”
The Review
Spirit of the Marathon is a documentary about the lives of people who take on the challenge of running a marathon. If you’re not a runner, you probably won’t like this film, but it was really a great flick. I have to say I loved the movie! I run quite a bit though and I just signed up today to run in the San Diego, Rock & Roll Marathon
on June 1st. Probably because I went to this movie and figured – what the heck.
It was very realistic and I really liked that it featured ordinary people trying to run in the Chicago Marathon and the challenges they faced and not just the elite runners. However, you will freak out when you see the elite runners and what they put their bodies through to be elite runners. People like American Deena Kastor who runs 140 miles a week to train as an elite runner – can you imagine? They deal with a completely different set of physical challenges than the average runner who is trying to get through a 26.2 mile run.
This is definitely one to rent when it comes out on DVD and watch it with your entire family. It is very inspiring and interesting – a great family film for sure.
