Becky and I went to see the new movie The Ides of March tonight at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The Moviefone website at The Ides of March, which is another good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

The Review 
The Ides of March is a behind the scenes look of what it’s like for a candidate to run for President and the people who help put him in the White House.  In this case, the film is written and directed by George Clooney and he plays one of the main characters, but it’s more about Ryan Gosling’s character who is the brains behind his political campaign.

The film moves really slow initially and then it starts to get interesting in the second half of the movie with some unexpected twists and turns.  It shows how idealistic the people helping politicians get elected are, but how pathetic and what liars the people they are supporting really are, which is a pretty good assessment of the political arena.  As my grandfather used to say, “I never met an honest politician.” and he had met many of them.

The movie is very well done, but I didn’t like the ending.  The ending leaves you hanging in my opinion.  I was glad that the candidate was a Democrat because it showed that it doesn’t matter what Party the candidate is from, they all have skeletons that they put in their closet – all by themselves.  We saw it with our friends Mark and Maria and they liked the film too.  We thought it was worth the price of admission.

The Review 
What’s Your Number is a cute comedy about a woman who discovers that she has slept with too many men after reading about the number of men most women sleep with before getting married. She’s thinking that her chance for meeting “Mr. Right” is doomed because of how she has lived her life.  The film is pretty goofy, but it’s funny.

The critics didn’t like this movie, but Becky and I, along with most of the people in the theater seemed to like it.  It’s not a great movie, but it’s a cute romantic comedy that will make for a good rental.  The language is a little rough at times, so be forewarned.

Last week Becky took the kids to see Dolphin Tale, which I guess they liked, and I went to see the new movie Killer Elite at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The Moviefone website at Killer Elite, which is another good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

The Review 
Killer Elite is based on a true story, but as I watched it I kept wondering how much of it was reality and how much was Hollywood make believe.  I should have known with a name like Killer Elite that it would be somewhat disturbing and it was definitely graphic at times.  It’s hard to get emotionally attached to characters, who have no problem killing other people and that’s the problem with this movie.

The story is fascinating since it is hard to believe that there are really hired killers like this movie portrays, but it’s rather boring at times.  It also doesn’t make a great deal of sense that some guy is going to quit being a hired killer and then come out of retirement to save his buddy, who got himself into a pickle.  He also happens to be the best of the best and he suddenly grew a conscience after years of killing people for profit, which was hard to believe.  Especially, when he interacts with the other main character who is out to kill him and his crew.

Robert Deniro is getting too old to play in these type of movies.  He needs to stay with films like Meet The Fockers and skip the “killer elite” type flicks.  I think his character hurt this film because he was definitely not believable in this tough guy role.  I can’t rate this one as Worth The Trip.  It’s a good three dollar rental, if you’re into action films, but it’s kind of boring at times and pretty graphic.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Moneyball last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our son Corban, who is a little league baseball player. The Fandango website at Moneyball, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

The Review 
Moneyball is a cool movie about the inside workings of Major League Baseball.  Brad Pitt is really good in this film as the character Billy Beane and the story is entertaining.  It’s a long flick though, probably about a half hour too long.  The Directing made us agonize a few times, as we watched the main character sit around checking his text messages, instead of watching his team play a ball game.

This movie would have been much better had they had more baseball in the film, instead of so much of it being just about the players, the management and the owners.  That’s the story though, it’s about the business of baseball and not a baseball movie.  Nevertheless, it’s still interesting because of Brad Pitt and his sidekick, Jonah Hill, that pretty much make the film.  The story is interesting and the ending is really amazing because of the way baseball has forever changed based on the system that was created by Billy Beane and his “genius” assistant.

I really liked this movie and thought it was Worth The Trip.  I wouldn’t rate it a Don’t Miss It, since it was a bit boring at times, but it was worth the price of admission for sure.  If you like baseball you should like this film.  Becky liked it too, but Corban was bored out of his head.  They also used the “F” word once, so be forewarned before you take your younger kids.  Most young kids won’t like this movie because it’s about the business of baseball, trying to create a winning team, much more than baseball itself.

Becky and I went to see the new movie I Don’t Know How She Does It a couple of weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at I Don’t Know How She Does It, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“As an employee at a Boston-based financial firm, Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker) struggles daily to balance the demands of her high-powered career with the needs of her husband (Greg Kinnear) and children. Complicating Kate’s life even more is new business associate Jack Abelhammer (Pierce Brosnan), who throws temptation into the mix.”

The Review 
I Don’t Know How She Does It is a cute movie about a modern working woman who has way too much on her plate, while trying to raise her family.  The story is good, it’s definitely a “Chick Flick”, but it shows how crazy it is for many working woman today to manage children, manage a career, and keep her marriage.

There are opportunities for the family to call it quits increases as the stress becomes great for both of the parents try to juggle their careers and family responsibilities.  There are also a temptation for the main character to leave her husband and run off with a millionaire that she has been working close without throughout the film.

I liked this movie and so did Becky, but it’s not a fantastic and memorable movie.  It has a good message about family and juggling work, while not getting so carried away in a career that it destroys your family in the process.  I think it’s fitting for today where careers can be lost quickly and it’s getting more and more difficult for people to “just say No.” to their bosses for fear of losing their jobs.  I think the critics didn’t like it because we’re in an Economy where many people don’t have a job.  Becky and I would both rent this movie as a good Rental.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Straw Dogs a few weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Straw Dogs, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.“

The Review 
Straw Dogs is a disturbing movie about a married couple that moves to the woman’s home town and hire her old flame and her buddies to work on their home.  Unfortunately, the crew they have hired are classic “Rednecks” that are High School football buddies.  They start harassing their new employers and lusting after the woman to the point that fantasy turns to desire and lust leads to murder.

The movie was okay, it’s a bit too disturbing because the characters are so aggressive and willing to commit murder.  It also portrays the guys in the South as just being total “hicks” as a Hollywood stereotype.  The film is definitely intense and exciting, but there really isn’t much of a story or character development, instead just pretty people involved in a conflict.

It’s a Rental at best and probably a Don’t Bother, but we’ll rate it a Rental since it does have some good aspects to it as a Horror Movie.  It’s more of a Horror flick than a Thriller because of the ‘gore’ factor.  I don’t think most people will like this film.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Drive last night at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Drive, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“A Hollywood stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver for thieves finds that a price has been put on his head after a failed robbery.“

The Review 
Drive is one of the worst movies we’ve seen in a long time.  What’s crazy is that the critics said it was “Extraordinary”, really?  All we can figure is because Albert Brooks is playing a bad guy, which is pretty unbelievable in itself, and Ryan Gosling is probably going to get “Sexiest Man Alive” on People Magazine this year.  Other than that we can’t figure out what they could possibly like about this film?

The name Drive you would think there would be some incredible driving, but there’s not much driving in this movie.  What there is though is dialogue like a 1970’s movie, music like a 1980’s movie and more graphic violence than a Quentin Tarantino flick.  Some of the violence in this movie is downright disturbing, like when the main character kicks the head in of a thug, until his head is no longer there.  It was demented.

The only good thing about this movie was the Preview.  As one woman said coming out of the film, “There is more dialogue in a Dr. Seuss book than that movie.”.  The bottom line is that this movie sucked in a big way.  Drive this movie off a cliff and “Don’t Bother”.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Warrior this past week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Warrior, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“Two estranged brothers and Mixed Martial Arts fighters confront the forces that tore their family apart as they prepare to do battle in the ring in this drama from director Gavin O’Connor (Pride and Glory). Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) is an ex-Marine from Pittsburgh who’s never quite shaken his troubled past. Upon learning that the purse in an upcoming MMA tournament is the largest in the league’s history, Tommy recruits his father (Nick Nolte), a former coach and recovering alcoholic, to whip him into shape in time for the competition…”

The Review
Warrior is up there with The Debt as one of the better movies we’ve seen this year.  The characters are interesting, the story is very well done and it’s an exciting movie like Rocky.  However, it’s not all about martial arts fighting, but the dynamics between a family in pain from resentment and bitterness.  The movie has a number of plot twists that will keep you interested in the flick with a few surprises.

The amount of hatred that one of the characters has been caring his whole life toward his father and brother has defined who he has become.  It reminded me a bit of the story of Absalom, the son of King David in the Bible who rebelled against his father then King because of decisions David had made that had angered him.  Fortunately, the outcome in this film is better than that of Absalom, but like that story it really shows how unforgiveness can destroy lives.

Nick Nolte is amazing in this movie and should get an award for his portrayal of the father.  The two brothers looked like they could be brothers and it’s wild.

Becky and are are both giving Warrior a “Don’t Miss It”. Be sure and put it on your list, even if you’re not a fan of Mixed Martial Arts, you should really like this movie.

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Debt on Friday at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark & Maria. The Fandango website at The Debt, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1966, when the trio (Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington) tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.”

The Review
The Debt is definitely one of the best films of the year.  The acting is great, the story is really good and the directing is superb.  It’s doing pretty well at the Box Office, but this is a movie that could be up for Best Picture this year because it’s so well done.  The movie is disturbing at times because it deals with a group of young people who are chasing down a murdering Nazi, who is hiding out in the Soviet block to avoid being brought to trial for his crimes.

This movie is really exciting with a number of twists and turns.  I can’t really think of a movie that it’s like, which was what made it so good since it was so unique.  It jumps around from when they are young to old and that made it entertaining.  There is this one part of the film toward the start of the movie that made me jump and it was pretty funny because I actually threw my water in the air and it landed on Becky and I.  I can’t remember the last time I did something like that, which was definitely memorable.

Becky and are are both giving The Debt a “Don’t Miss It”. Mark and Maria like it too and were glad they went to see it.  Be sure and put it on your list.
