John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Ugly Truth

theuglytruth Becky got on my case last night because we went to see a sneak preview of the movie The Ugly Truth last week with our friends Rod and Kimberly Tactaquin at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO and I never wrote a movie review about it. The Fandango website at The Ugly Truth describes the movie as follows:

“Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a lovelorn TV producer who, despite a long and arduous search for the perfect mate, is hopelessly single. The battle of the sexes heats up when her employers team her up with Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), an opinionated TV celebrity who plans to put Abby through the wringer to prove his own theories about what makes men and women tick…”

The Review
The Ugly Truth is a funny movie, but it’s definitely Rated R and is not a kid movie or even a teenager movie for that matter. It’s really raunchy and has really foul language which pushed the film over-the-top. I think it was more vulgar than the movie Knocked Up, but it was on that same level.

Goblin Network Ad There are some really funny scenes in this movie, but it’s all about sex, which I guess you would expect with a name like The Ugly Truth. Be warned that this movie is very offensive! Some people will really have a problem with the situations and the language to the point that they may want to walk out of the movie. In fact, it’s more over-the-top than The Hangover, but not nearly as funny.

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I’m honest about movie reviews, that Becky and I both liked this movie and would recommend seeing it, if you’re wanting some good laughs. However, you might want to wait to rent it, in case it’s just too much for you. However, Rod and Kimberly liked it too, so I guess they have a serious character flaw like Becky and I do, which is why we like to go to the movies together.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

HarryPotter6 I took the kids to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince this weekend at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince describes the movie as follows:

“Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information…”

The Review
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth Harry Potter movie from the book series of billionaire author J.K. Rowling. The movie has already done close to $80 million at the box office with $9.5 million in sales just on Tuesday of this week! Needless to say, it’s another awaited blockbuster with the return of Harry Potter and his buddies fighting against the forces of darkness.

The special effects and storyline of all the Harry Potter films are very well done, especially if you’re a person who likes fantasy type movies. Becky hates these films, so she opted to not go and I took the kids to this 2 hour and 33 minute movie that is starting to grow up just a little too much. The characters are getting older now and they are starting to want to date one another, which will appeal to the millions who are now teenagers or in their twenties from when the book series first came out.

The evil character Voldemort never shows up in this one, but you discover some other evil characters that you didn’t suspect from the previous movies. Conroy was really ticked off that something happened to one of the main character and he was mad about it after the movie, so he definitely got pulled into this flick like a fish that took the bait. He made sure that he rated it Worth The Trip instead of a Don’t Miss It.

I didn’t read the books, so I’m just watching the series and frankly it’s getting a bit tiring now. I’m thinking the seventh film will be a good one to end this film series on, but our kids still really like it. I’m tired of hearing Harry’s friend’s scream “Harry!”, but the movies are still entertaining. This one is definitely way too long and I was hoping it would have been more like two hours instead of nearly three hours with Previews. Still, if you’re a Harry Potter fan you’ll like this one and want to see it on the Big Screen, but you probably already knew that, didn’t you?

Our kids are definitely Harry Potter movie fans.

Iloveyoubethcooper Becky and I went to see the new movie I Love You Beth Cooper on Friday at the AMC theaters in Highland Ranch, CO with our friends Rod & Kimberly Tactaquin. The Rotten Tomatoes website at I Love You Beth Cooper

describes the movie as follows:

“I Love You, Beth Cooper chronicles the story of a nerdy valedictorian who proclaims his love for the hottest and most popular girl in school – Beth Cooper – during his graduation speech. Much to his surprise, Beth shows up at his door that very night and decides to show him the best night of his life. –© 20th Century Fox…”

The Review
This movie is incredibly stupid and ridiculous, but it’s also pretty darn funny. It’s much like some of the stupid comedies of the 1980’s. I mean, CaddyShack filmed in 1980 is hilarious, but by today’s standards it would be considered sophomoric and ridiculous. Which may be why so many people didn’t like this movie.

Becky didn’t like I Love You Beth Cooper that much. She didn’t completely dislike it, but she thought it was at best a rental. Rod, Kimberly and I on the other hand thought it was pretty funny. It’s not a great movie, so I have to agree with Becky.

I Love You Beth Cooper is by no means on the same level as Hangover or CaddyShack, but there are some pretty good laughs. They have the token gay guy, which they probably needed to get the film funded, that they didn’t need for the movie, but he was pretty funny in this film as a strange “movie buff”.

The main male character could have been in Revenge of the Nerds and any number of films as the “oddball” smart kid. It bugged me that they took God’s name in vain several times, which was not necessary. Parts of the film put the main character in situations that were embarrassingly stupid for him where you wanted to cover your eyes. The characters were completely nuts, but that’s what made it a funny film.

Beth Cooper is the pretty girl cheerleader played by Hayden Panettiere from the Hero’s television show and she does a good job in the movie playing her part. Ultimately, this is a movie you have to be in the mood to see and it probably is better as a Rental as Becky suggested.

on Sunday at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Public Enemies describes the movie as follows:

“No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI…”

The Review

Johnny Depp is an amazing actor. He will probably go down as one of the best actors of all time. The guy is just incredible and once again he pulls off the real-life character of John Dillinger in the movie Public Enemies. Public Enemies takes you into the real world of John Dillinger and gives you a glimpse into the life of the 1930’s bank robber and gangster. The film is pretty rough with some strong language and plenty of violence, but it’s extremely well done.

Becky pointed out that the movie is so good that you actually feel sorry for this hard core criminal by the end of the film. If there is one flaw with this movie, I would have to say that’s it. The film glamorizes this bank robber, as you would expect from the title of the film and previews, but it also allows you to understand why there were guys like him trying to earn their living by robbing banks.

You come to realize that Dillinger was a much different bank robber than other gangsters like Pretty Boy Floyd who was a ruthless character and didn’t care who he killed. He was more like a celebrity with the people for his dirty deeds. You also discover that Hoover was a nut job, but we all kind of knew that from history. Power definitely corrupts and you realize the power of the media in forging public opinion that is still just as powerful today.

The mob was just getting started and getting away with murder and mayhem by keeping a lower profile than the bank robbers. They were much like the giant drug dealers of today who are behind the scenes polluting society for profit.

Public Enemies is a very well done movie, but it’s not a feel good flick by any stretch. You’re not going to leave and say, “Wow, that was great seeing Dillinger get whacked. Let’s see it again.” You should like it though because of it’s historical content and it’s a film with fantastic acting by Christian Bale and Johnny Depp that has a very interesting, but sad story.

In the end, we both liked this movie and thought it was Worth The Trip.

IceAge Dinosaurs Becky and I took the kids to see Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs today at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs describes the movie as follows:

“After the events of Ice Age: The Meltdown, life begins to change for Manny and his friends: Scrat is still on the hunt to hold onto his beloved acorn, while finding a possible romance in a female sabre-toothed squirrel named Scratte. Manny and Ellie, having since become an item, are expecting a baby, which leaves Manny anxious to ensure that everything is perfect for when his baby arrives. Diego is fed up with being treated like a house-cat and ponders the notion that he is becoming too laid-back…”

The Review
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Bambi psp

picks up with there other two movies left off with the same characters and a few new ones, including some very cool looking dinosaurs. I’m always amazed when I see these cartoons now because the characters are so unbelievably life like. It’s almost like you’re watching real actors and it’s very easy to get lost in the movie. I think this is ever since the movies Shrek and Jimmy Neutron came on the scene and changed everything for the world of cartoons.

The story is pretty good and we didn’t opt for the additional expense of seeing it in 3D, but it was still good without paying for 3D. There are some really funny parts in the film and a few jokes for the adults. The dinosaurs are super cool looking and the main characters are their normal funny selves as they continue to grow their gang of misfits.

Becky and I both think these films are better on the big screen and we both thought it was worth the trip. The kids all loved it. If you go before Noon on Saturday or Sunday at AMC it’s $6 a ticket, so if you’re trying to save a few bucks that’s the way to go.

Becky and I went to see the new movie My Sister’s Keeper on Friday at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at My Sister’s Keeper describes the movie as follows:

“Conceived as a marrow donor for her gravely ill sister, Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) has undergone countless surgeries and medical procedures in her short life. Though their older daughter’s life has no doubt been prolonged, the unorthodox decision of Anna’s parents has cracked the entire family’s foundation. When Anna sues her parents for emancipation, it sets off a court case that threatens to destroy the family for good…” This Is Spinal Tap move

The Review
My Sister’s Keeper is one of the best films of the year for sure. Don’t believe the reviews of people who say it wasn’t good because it didn’t follow the book. It’s not a book, it’s a movie! Apparently, they don’t know the difference, but you can never make a movie just like a book because your brain is going to view the characters differently.

As a film, this is an extraordinary movie. It will pull on your heart strings on so many levels and make you think about issues that you haven’t thought about before. Should we be pro-creating people to save other people’s lives for example and what are the consequences of such decisions? At what age should children be able to make decisions concerning their own bodies? How do you deal with a child dying of cancer and other emotional and moral issues are addressed in this touching film.

Equilibrium dvdrip The story is amazing, the characters all have depth and you see life from each of their perspectives. The acting is great, but this is one of those movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List that you want to see on the Big Screen, but probably not more than once every 10 years. It’s just too emotional.

Some people might disagree with our review, but I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theater on Friday night with people openly sobbing. A film that can create that kind of emotion is powerful and this is a spectacular movie that we’re definitely going to rate as a Don’t Miss It.

I think I’ve told about ten people since Friday to go and see it, so if you’re reading this you’re going to want to do the same. If you read the book, you may not like it because you’re going to go in expecting to see the book on the screen and I don’t think you’re going to get that with this movie. However, if you see it as a movie with a powerful story about life, death and family decisions, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Transformers2 I took the kids to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen yesterday at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

describes the movie as follows:

“The battle for Earth has ended but the battle for the universe has just begun. After returning to Cybertron, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons, and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots believing that peace was possible finds out that Megatron’s dead body has been stolen from the US Military by Skorpinox and revives him using his own spark. Now Megatron is back seeking revenge and with Starscream and more Decepticon reinforcements on the way, the Autobots with reinforcements of their own, may have more to deal with then meets the eye…”

The Review
Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen is the much anticipated sequel to Michael Bay’s first Transformers flick with Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and the Transformer characters from the first film all back for more fun filled action. This one has much harsher language and is rated PG-13 for brief drug material, intense seq. of sci-fi violence, intense seq. of sci-fi action, crude and sexual material and language. Like Land of the Lost earlier this year, I’m not sure that Michael Bay has a clue anymore when it comes to Directing, especially a kid’s film. Supposedly he said that he’s done with action flicks and wants to do some more serious films and that’s probably a good idea because this movie pretty much sucked.

The story is lame with new evil characters, more running around trying to escape the evil Transformers and plenty of shoot-em up scenes with a few new twists that were on the level of the last Indiana Jones movie. If you saw that disaster, you’ll know what I mean.

There is a new beautiful Terminator type robot that tries to seduce the main character, which made absolutely no sense whatsoever, and apparently she was amazingly powerful, but could be easily destroyed by getting run over by a truck. They haven’t quite evolved to Terminator level yet.

Most of the Transformers this time around are really easy to kill with tanks and high powered weapons that were not in existence a few years ago in the first film. It looked like you could maybe take one out with a pellet gun this time around. There’s an old Transformer who lives in the Smithsonian and you’ll think you’re in the new Night at the Museum for a few scenes.

I didn’t completely hate it like Land of the Lost and neither did the kids, but they didn’t rate it a Don’t Miss It and were hard pressed to say it was Worth The Trip. Keep in mind, our kids are the age where they would actually play with Hasbro’s Transformers, although they would disagree, so I’m not sure who Michael Bay was trying to reach with this one, except maybe his Hollywood buddies.

The best thing about this movie were the cars, especially the Camaro and the Corvette. Now that Government Motors has cost us all billions of dollars to stay around and it looks like Pontiac will be no more, even they were not that exciting to watch and save this movie from extinction. I’m sure this will do extremely well at the box office, but it definitely is at best a rental. You won’t walk out of this one hoping they make a third installment.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Proposal

theproposal Becky and I went to see a sneak preview of the movie The Proposal last week with our friends Rod and Kimberly Tactaquin at the Regal Cinema’s in Lone Tree, CO. The Rotten Tomatoes website at The Proposal describes the movie as follows:

“When high-powered book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS), who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own…”

The Review
The Proposal is a very funny movie about a guy who wants to be a writer and is working for the boss from Hell. It stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds and they have great chemistry together in this film that has plenty of laughs. The Proposal comes out this Friday and it’s a great date night film and a very well done romantic comedy.

Goblin Network Ad We all liked The Proposal and thought it was a really well done movie. Many of the funny parts of the film are situation based rather than just “one liner’s”, but there are a few lines in the movie that are funny as well. Amazingly enough there were not any gay scenes in this movie, which is practically impossible for Hollywood to do anymore when making a comedy. The language was also tolerable for a change as well.

Becky and I both liked this movie and would recommend seeing it at the theater. It was worth the price of admission and Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds do a great job playing these characters. Rod and Kimberly gave it a Worth The Trip as well.

John &amp;amp;amp;amp; Becky&amp;amp;amp;#039;s Movie Review Of The Taking Of Pelham 123

Becky and I went to a charity event tonight over near the Landmark Theater with our friend Walt Oleski and after going to the function we couldn’t resist going to catch a movie. There’s a surprise, eh? We went to see the new movie, The Taking of Pelham 123 at the Landmark theater in Englewood, CO. The Fandango website at The Taking of Pelham 123 describes the movie as follows:

“A group of hijackers take a subway train and its passengers hostage, threatening to kill them if their ransom is not paid of 1 million dollars.”

The Review Sweet Land film

The Taking of Pelham 123 is a movie about a group of terrorists who take over a subway car and hold it for ransom for ten million dollars. The entire movie is about this event and not about anything else. It’s a remake of an older film from 1974 with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, which I’m going to want to see because I think it will be much better than this one.

Don’t get me wrong, the acting in this flick was phenomenal. John Travolta proves that he can play a woman or a terrorist and he was amazing in this role as a whack job. You don’t like his character at all since he is a very evil dude.

Goblin Network Ad The story was somewhat interesting, but you never get attached emotionally to the characters and the language is harsh. The language is so bad that it distracts from the film. By the end of the movie you’re not really feeling like you watched a great action movie or thriller, but you’re glad that it’s over. It’s just not fun and really pretty pointless.

Becky and I both didn’t like it that much. We thought it was at best a rental, but probably more like a Don’t Bother. The acting is the only thing this movie has going for it and as good as it is with Denzel Washington and John Travolta, they just can’t carry the movie.

“Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is a Greek American tour guide, who leads an assorted group of misfit tourists around Greece. Tourists who would rather buy a T-Shirt than learn about history. In an hysterical clash of personalities and cultures, everything seems to go wrong. Until one day when a very special tourist, Irv Gordon (Richard Dreyfuss), shows her how to have fun and take a good look at the last person she’d ever expect to find love with…her quiet and sexy Greek bus driver…”

The Review
My Life In Ruins

stars the woman, Nia Vardalos, from the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but she’s not fat anymore. She is pretty funny though and in this movie she is in Greece and trying to figure out her life where she falls in love.

This is a cute film and for the most part a really clean cut movie. I don’t think that it’s a great flick that you should run out and see at the box office, but it will make a good rental. There are quite a few funny parts in this movie and it’s definitely a chick flick.

Becky thought it was a rental too, but we both enjoyed it, except for a couple goofball teenagers that sat down by us. The 17 year old genius started calling his buddies during the movie and this is definitely not a kids movie. They won’t like it. It’s one to put on your list for a trip to RedBox.
