Becky and I went to see the new George Clooney flick The Descendants a couple of weeks ago at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with a few friends. The Fandango website at The Descendants, describes the movie as follows.
“Native islander Matt King (George Clooney) lives with his family in Hawaii. Their world shatters when a tragic accident leaves his wife in a coma. Not only must Matt struggle with the stipulation in his wife’s will that she be allowed to die with dignity, but he also faces pressure from relatives to sell their family’s enormous land trust. Angry and terrified at the same time, Matt tries to be a good father to his young daughters as they too try to cope with their mother’s possible death.“
The Review
The Descendants has been getting rave reviews as one of the best films of the year. This is hardly the case. The best thing about this film is the movie poster and that it’s set in Hawaii. It’s a clever story with a few interesting characters, but just because it’s clever doesn’t make it entertaining. There are a couple funny scenes, but overall this movie is pretty depressing.
The film is not terrible, but it’s just not very good. The best way to describe it is that it’s boring. Clooney is running down the road again, which is something that has been happening frequently in his previous Independent Films. The Descendants came across like it was going to be more of a comedy, but it’s a long, drawn out, dramatic film that was far too serious. We all left the film feeling let down.
When the movie was over I turned to one of our friends and I said, “Did you like this movie?” and she responded very matter of fact, “No, I did not like that movie.”. We would both rate this movie as a Don’t Bother, unless you’re in the mood to be depressed.
