John & Becky’s Movie Review of Remember Me

Becky and I went to see the movie Remember Me last week at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Remember Me describes the movie as follows:

“In the romantic drama Remember Me, Robert Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) ever since tragedy separated their family. Tyler didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through until the day he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. Love was the last thing on his mind, but as her spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him, he begins to fall for her. Through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life. But soon, hidden secrets are revealed, and the circumstances that brought them together slowly threaten to tear them apart. Remember Me is an unforgettable story about the power of love, the strength of family, and the importance of living passionately and treasuring every day of one’s life…”

The Review
Remember Me was not a movie that I was overly excited about seeing. I thought the Previews for it kind of sucked. It looked like it was going to be a predictable Drama with the guy from the Twilight saga playing a leading role to draw young moviegoers.

Becky wanted to see it for some reason and I decided to tag along and eat her popcorn. She was willing to let me join her in watching this movie instead of bumping me for one of her girl friends, which was nice.

It wasn’t at all what I expected it to be with a very good story, solid acting and even good directing. This is a film that will pull at your heart strings, especially with a very surprising ending that will bring home the point that we need to remember people.

We both would agree that Remember Me was definitely Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Bounty Hunter

Becky and I went to see the new Jennifer Aniston movie The Bounty Hunter on Friday night at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Yahoo website at The Bounty Hunter describes the movie as follows:

“Milo Boyd, a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter, gets his dream job when he is assigned to track down his bail-jumping ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurly. He thinks all that’s ahead is an easy payday, but when Nicole gives him the slip so she can chase a lead on a murder cover-up, Milo realizes that nothing ever goes simply with him and Nicole. The exes continually one-up each other — until they find themselves on the run for their lives. They thought their promise to love, honor and obey was tough — staying alive is going to be a whole lot tougher…”

The Review
The Bounty Hunter main character, Milo Boyd, has a great last name, but it is still a very predictable romantic comedy that is at best “cute”. It’s Jennifer Aniston playing the same person she always plays, only with a different co-star and plot. In this case, it’s Gerard Butler and I think they had some romantic escapade supposedly off the screen, but who cares.

The story should be really funny, since it’s about a bounty hunter who is given the assignment to arrest his ex-wife that he really can’t stand. Unfortunately, almost all of the funny scenes are in the Previews with nothing really new that comes out in the film. There are a few plot twists, but nothing that really grabs you and makes you want to keep watching. On the contrary, it drags on and on and is quite boring.

It’s a nice first date flick at best and should be coming to a rental rack or RedBox near you very soon. Granted there were a few people who liked it, but we thought it was definitely a rental and not worth spending the high prices at the box office for this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Green Zone

Becky and I went to see the new Matt Damon movie Green Zone on Friday night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo website at Green Zone describes the movie as follows:

“During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one bobby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their…”

The Review
Green Zone is not at all like the Jason Bourne series by any stretch, so don’t be fooled by the Previews of this movie. The story is about what happened to start the Iraq War. Supposedly Matt Damon’s character, who was in the U.S. Army and looking for WMD’s, figured out that there was a massive cover-up by the White House and alerted the world by going to war with the CIA and the current Administration.

I thought we were watching Hollywood re-write history with Matt Damon playing the main character, which I guess is no surprise based on his political views. Remember him commenting on Sarah Palin during the election, well apparently he wanted to say a little more with this movie.

I’m not a fan of the Bush Administration or the amount of money we have spent on the Iraq War while our nation is going broke, but this movie was totally lame. It was so boring that Becky fell asleep and we should have got up and left. Green Zone was about as fun watching as a documentary on ozone while having the air slowly sucked out of the room.

Our advice is don’t waste your money on this one or wait for the rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Alice in Wonderland

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie Alice in Wonderland on opening week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Alice in Wonderland describes the movie as follows:

“From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure “Alice in Wonderland”, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Crispin Glover…”

The Review
Alice in Wonderland is totally amazing! It’s no surprise that this film did over $100 million on opening weekend. Tim Burton has done it again by creating an enchanted world and in this version Alice has grown-up and found herself falling down the rabbit hole once again. She doesn’t realize that the dreams she has been having since she was a child were about a land she had been to previously. It’s really cool the way they tied it all together and she was able to discover six impossible things.

All of our kids really liked this movie, except Bianca who is 9 years old thought it was a little too scary compared to the original cartoon, but she still liked it. The special effects in this movie are fantastic and the story is really good, along with the costumes being super cool too. Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter was really wild. Kind of like Wonka in the Willy Wonka flick, he’s even more nuts. The acting is very good in this movie too with great characters.

On thing of interest to me was that the White Queen needed a champion to defeat the dragon on her behalf and from a Christian perspective I thought this movie had some parallels to the Christian faith. In the same way, God is looking for His champions to slay the dragons in this world, which is really cool.

We all really liked Alice in Wonderland and definitely recommend this as a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Crazy Heart

Becky and I went to see the Oscar nominated movie Crazy Heart about a week ago at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Crazy Heart describes the movie as follows:

“Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart…”

The Review
Crazy Heart is an interesting film about a somewhat washed out Country and Western singer who is quickly racing toward the end of his career. The story is pretty good and the acting is incredible. In fact, there is no doubt in my or Becky’s mind that Jeff Bridges should have won the Best Actor for his performance in this movie.

The problem with this film though is that it’s a very boring film. It would be a great flick to make people who are in Alcoholics Anonymous watch or when someone first enters a Treatment Center because this character is a total drunk. For about two hours you’re watching this guy destroy his life and throw a pity party over and over again while taking advantage of people around him and living a terrible life. It’s just not fun after a while and you feel like you’re watching a personal train wreck, which is what this movie is about.

Even though Jeff Bridges was amazing in his portrayal of Bad Blake, we would suggest that you wait and rent this one for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Cop Out

Becky and I went to see the new Bruce Willis movie Cop Out about a week ago at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Cop Out describes the movie as follows:

“Two longtime NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen, rare, mint-condition baseball card find themselves up against a merciless, memorabilia-obsessed gangster. Jimmy the veteran detective whose missing collectible is his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, and Paul is his “partner-against-crime” whose preoccupation with his wife’s alleged infidelity makes it hard for him to keep his eye on the ball…”

The Review
Cop Out is one of the worst movies we’ve seen so far this year. Bruce Willis has got to be desperate to do this film, which makes no sense. There wasn’t anything good about this movie. It wasn’t funny, it was crude and the characters were completely stupid. What made it even worse is that you could tell that Bruce Willis didn’t even want to be on the set when they were making this movie.

Cop Out was trying to be like Beverly Hills Cop only without the right cast members and with a story that was really lame. You had the good cops who were trying to solve a crime and the other cops who they didn’t get along with and we’ve never seen that before. There wasn’t anything original about this movie and it’s just a rehash of a number of other films that have been done before with fresh cast members.

There were a number of people who liked this movie and what they could possibly see in this film that was entertaining we do not know. Our advice would be to skip this flick all together.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Becky and I took the boys and Bianca to see the new movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief on opening week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Percy Jackson and the Olympians describes the movie as follows:

“Trouble-prone teen Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out school — but that’s the least of his problems. The gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters seem to have walked out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology texts and into his life…”

The Review
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is based on a children’s book series kind of like Harry Potter in a young boy who has magical powers, but instead of being a wizard he’s the son of the ancient Greek god. I started reading this book, but I didn’t like it quite as much as Conroy and his friends did. It’s a huge hit though since the girl sitting next to us in the film was seeing it for the second time after opening night!

Conroy didn’t like it as much as Corban since he had read the books and it was quite a bit different than the books. For example, the heroin girl, who is the daughter of Athena in the book has blonde hair, but in the film she is a brunette. That didn’t sit well with Conroy, but the whole story was bit too silly for Becky and I. I think I would rather see Clash of the Titans in April and see how they deal with the gods of ancient myth and legend.

One thing of interest, is that if you read the Book of Enoch, which is mentioned in the book of Jude in the Bible it talks about how the angels came down to Earth and had children with women and created “hero’s of old, men of renown”, see Genesis 6:1-4, which were also the giants mentioned throughout various places of the Old Testament. The most famous of which is Goliath, who David slew with God’s help to become King of Israel. Goliath was over 11 feet tall, so that would definitely be a huge man even by NBA standards and could have been considered “god like” by many people of ancient times.

I find it quite fascinating that the ancient Greeks had this same belief that their “gods” came down and had relations with women to create what were known as demi-gods, such as Hercules, Achilles and others, which is what Percy Jackson is in this film. There is a very good essay on this topic from a Biblical perspective called “Giants: Heroes of Old” that is online, if you care to read it and sheds some light onto how many ancient “myths” may not be myths after all depending on what you believe.

In the end, this film was entertaining and our kids really liked it. I thought it was a good rental and so did Becky, but all three of our kids thought it was definitely Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Wolfman

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Wolfman a couple of weeks ago at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at The Wolfman describes the movie as follows:

“Though absent from his ancestral home of Blackmoor for many years, aristocrat Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) returns to find his missing brother at the request of the latter’s fiancee, Gwen (Emily Blunt). He learns that a creature has links to…”

The Review
The Wolfman was very true to the original Wolfman with Lon Chaney Jr and had some good special effects and cinematography. It’s a pretty graphic film, with a little too much gore and that would be the worst part of the movie. However, I guess you might expect that for a story about a guy who turns into a wolf and terrorizes and eats people. The special effects pretty wild. This film was a great remake of the old classic in black and white only with a few new twists. Parts of it were stupid though.

The screenplay was unusual and Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro were good together. I liked the movie more than Becky did and I thought it was in between a Rental and Worth The Trip. Becky thought it was a rental and didn’t like it that much. I think she fell asleep in part of it, but she’s not a big fan of science fiction films either.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Shutter Island

Becky and I went to see new movie Shutter Island on Friday night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

I’m a bit behind on the movie reviews again. I got pretty busy last week since I was moving my office as The Cool Car Guy to a new location. I need to write a couple movie reviews this week, but I wanted to get this one up for Shutter Island since it did $40 million at the box office this weekend.

The Fandango website at Shutter Island describes the movie as follows:

“The project centers on a U.S. marshal (Mark Ruffalo) who along with his new partner (Leonardo DiCaprio) travels to a Massachusetts island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane. During their inquiry , the two encounter a web of deceit, experience a hurricane and become involved in a deadly inmate riot that leaves them trapped on the island. Ben Kingsley will play Dr. Cawley, the hospital’s enigmatic chief physician who must reluctantly play host to the two U.S. marshals…”

The Review
Shutter Island is a film that has great actors, incredible acting and Directing, but the story is totally whacked. We were really looking forward to this film because they have been advertising it for so long and we figured it would be great with the all star cast. However, it’s extremely graphic with disturbing violence and all kinds of stuff going on in the film that makes you cringe at times. It takes place inside of a mental hospital on an island that there is no way out and you don’t know who’s insane and who is normal.  It’s a bit nuts as you might expect.

It does keep your interest, but it moves really slow, it will keep you guessing for sure, but it’s too disturbing. The main character, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who is brilliant in this movie, is dealing with some serious mental issues from his past with flashbacks to World War II and the Nazi camps.  You will see scenes with bodies everywhere and it’s a bit horrific. He has witnessed some sick events in his life and he believes that his wife has been murdered and a woman he’s looking for on the island is locked up for killing all of her children. At least, you think that’s what happened or maybe not?

The theater on Friday was packed. However, by the time the movie is over we both left thinking it was a rental at best and many people who were leaving didn’t like it that much either. We didn’t enjoy the movie because of the outcome and the reality of the insanity that is taking place. It will definitely make you shutter when you discover what’s really going on at Shutter Island and it was a let down.  This is not a film with a happy ending for sure, but was far too depressing for our liking.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of From Paris With Love

Becky and I went to see the new John Travolta movie From Paris With Love this Weekend at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at From Paris With Love describes the movie as follows:

“A low-ranking intelligence operative (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) working in the office of the U.S. Ambassador in France takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent (John Travolta) who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack…”

The Review
From Paris With Love is the new John Travolta flick that came out this weekend and we were surprised by this movie. There is plenty of violence and it’s quite graphic at times, but the story and the characters were really interesting. It’s directed by the same guy who did Transporter and Transporter 2, so there are some action sequences with the beloved Audi again, with a great chase scene.

it’s violent like the Transporter and Taken movies that Pierre Morel Directed and John Travolta’s character is violent, but very funny that helps alleviate the violence. He does a great job with his main character and so does Jonathan Rhys-Meyers who plays his side-kick, analytical, wanna-be secret agent.  The film has plenty of twists and turns with a good story. There are a number of parts that are not believable, as you might expect in an action film.

Overall, this movie was a surprise. It’s probably a rental for most people, but we both liked the film for an action flick, other than the violence being a bit over-the-top at times. We would have to say that it was Worth The Trip though.
