John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Prince and the Frog

PrincessFrogBecky and I took the kids to see the new movie The Princess and the Frog last week at the Century theater while we were in Tucson, AZ. The Fandango website at The Prince and the Frog describes the movie as follows:

“Walt Disney Animation Studios presents a musical set in the greatest city of them all, New Orleans. “The Princess and the Frog” marks Disney’s return to the warmth and grandeur of hand drawn animation. The film teams Ron Clements and John Musker , creators of “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” with Oscar winning composer Randy Newman. From the heart of Louisiana’s mystical bayouts and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgetable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a trumpet playing alligator, a love sick Cajun firefly, and a host of other charming characters at every turn…”

The Review
The Princess and the Frog was a surprisingly great story!   It’s a really quality Disney cartoon with a good message about the importance of believing in your dreams, but also working hard and not giving up on people.  It also warns of the hidden dangers of taking short-cuts in life or trying to make a deal with the Devil and not thinking there will be a consequence for your decision.

I didn’t think I was going to like it and we didn’t have great expectations going into it, especially with all the great animation from Pixar and Dreamworks these days. The animation seemed more old school, like Bambi, but that didn’t matter because this movie really delivered and was a great quality film.

In fact, we went to see Planet 51 after seeing this movie and the animation in Planet 51 was great, but The Prince and the Frog was better.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Avatar

AvatarBecky and I took the kids to see the new movie Avatar in 3D today at the Century theater in Tucson, AZ. The Fandango website at Avatar describes the movie as follows:

“AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story…”

The Review
Avatar is the giant blockbuster that hit the theaters this week after millions of dollars in advertising and hundreds of millions in production costs. We went into this film with great expectations and even spent the extra money for the 3D experience. What a let down. Okay, it was cool for about 20 minutes with the great special effects and then Avatar just got painfully boring with goofy Star Wars type characters, the character learning new skills and a pretty lame story.

To sum up this movie, “Man is bad, but giant blue aliens are good”. It was as simple to follow along as a Geico commercial, only there weren’t any cave men in this movie. Men are descending on planet Pandora to take over the high-priced minerals and they will wipe out these wonderful alien creatures without a second thought for profit. The hero is a Marine who’s lost his legs and takes over an Avatar creature to infiltrate the village of superior aliens, and then he falls in love. The story just wasn’t that great even though the special effects were phenomenal. However, it’s like going on a roller-coaster eight times in a row, after a while it gets a bit boring.

Corban hated this movie and so did Bianca. In fairness, they were probably too little for this film. Conroy rated it a rental and Becky thought it was a Don’t Bother for sure. The word she used, “that movie was stupid.”, so not everyone liked this one. I probably liked it more than anyone in our family. They lost me though, with the lead character cursing all the time and taking God’s name in vain, while embracing the alien god Eway or whatever her name was, who was “Mother Pandora” since we all killed “Mother Earth”. It was just a bit too political and New Age for my liking. No matter how good the special effects and characters are in this move, the story pretty much sucked and had been done too many times before.

I know I’m in the minority here, but only a few people applauded in our movie. I didn’t hear everyone saying how great it was after the movie. Quite few people thought it was “painful”, as long as it was and with such a goofy story.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Did You Hear About The Morgans

MorgnsBecky and I went to see new movie Did You Hear About The Morgans last Friday at the new Hollywood theaters in Southglenn. The Fandango website at Did You Hear About The Morgans describes the movie as follows:

“New Yorkers Paul (Hugh Grant) and Meryl (Sarah Jessica Parker) Morgan seem to have it all — except for the fact that their marriage is crumbling around them. But their romantic woes are small compared to the world of trouble they find themselves in after they witness a murder. To protect them from an assassin, federal agents whisk Paul and Meryl away to small-town Wyoming, where their marriage will either finally crash and burn, or their passion will re-ignite…”

The Review
Did You Hear About The Morgans is a quirky chick flick about a couple from New York who are having marriage trouble, only to end up in the Witness Protection Program and living together on a ranch in Wyoming. The movie centers around their marriage problems and living on this ranch out in the middle of nowhere. It’s very predictable and not that funny.

Did You Hear About The Morgans is not a very funny movie. I think that they cast it wrong for starters. Hugh Grant just isn’t that funny as a comedian with the one-liner’s they kept having him say throughout the film. Sarah Jessica Parker was kind of annoying. She’s definitely a New Yorker, but you didn’t really get emotionally attached to either of these characters. In fact, we liked the older couple they were staying with in Wyoming, played by Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen, much better than the lead characters. They were actually pretty funny and didn’t annoy you.

The movie kind of reminded me of “City Slickers” with Billy Crystal as a guy from the city going out into the Wild West and being out of his element. However, Billy could deliver on the lines that made it really funny, but this was a film that was too long at 1hr 43 minutes because you wanted it to be over. We would wait for the rental on this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Invictus

InvictusBecky and I went to see new movie Invictus last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Invictus describes the movie as follows:

“With the fall of apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) tries to unite his countrymen and bring peace by bringing the Rugby World Cup to his country…”

The Review
Invictus is a very powerful movie starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. I’m not as big of a Matt Damon fan, as I used to be, after he tried to convince all of us that he had a brain politically during the last election with his Sarah Palin bashing. Even if he was right, which I don’t think he was, there is an old saying, “A wise man keeps a closed mouth.” and that’s what I liked about this film.

This movie was about “character” in politics, overcoming obstacles through faith and having grace under pressure. It demonstrated how Nelson Mandela was able to forgive his former evil doers and change their hearts to bring the country together. The story was fantastic and the only shortfall really was the Directing because the movie was about thirty minutes too long. No offense to the Director, Clint Eastwood, because I am a Clint Eastwood fan and really love the old flicks that made him famous, but his movies are so slow.

That’s the only complaint we have with this movie and why we would recommend waiting for the rental. It’s just so long and moves to slow, but the acting, the message and the story are great, so make sure you see it. Morgan Freeman rocks in this movie and so does Matt Damon. It’s Worth The Trip, but be prepared to sit and suffer from some boredom as you wait for it to keep moving.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Everybody’s Fine

everybodysfineBecky and I went to see new movie Everybody’s Fine last night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Everybody’s Fine describes the movie as follows:

““Everybody’s Fine,” a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Stanno Tutti Bene,” follows a widower (De Niro) who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect…”

The Review
Everybody’s Fine is a touching movie about a father who is trying to figure out his relationship with his adult children after they stand him up for a family reunion. His wife has passed away and his health is fading and he really wants to have a relationship with his children and be a part of their lives. Unfortunately, they are not sure of their relationship with him and it’s very sad as he goes from family member to family member only to be sent packing.

The acting in this movie is great by all the characters and the cast fits as well, even when they are children. It’s a very good family film with only a few cuss words, which is unusual for Mr. De Niro given his Casino days. Of course, they had to have the token gay character to keep the Hollywood elites happy, played by Drew Barrymore. However, in this movie, the character actually works because all of his children have serious relationship issues and everybody is not fine.

There is quite a bit of symbolism in this movie, a good message about choices in life and family relationships. You’ll hear the word “truth” used many times by a number of characters and there is plenty of lying that is going on in the film. Becky and I both really liked this movie and found it worth the price of admission.

I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theater, so be forewarned that there are some sad parts of this film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Twilight Saga: New Moon

newmoonBecky and I took the kids to see new movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo website at NewMoon describes the movie as follows:

“Following Bella Swan’s ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world. As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edward’s image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks…”

The Review
New Moon is a movie that we probably shouldn’t have taken the kids to see because it’s a teenage love story, with some ridiculous characters. We decided to do it since they rented the first one and liked it. New Moon is a continuation of the first installment of the Twilight Saga, only worse than the first one because it moves even slower.

Vampires may move at super human speed, but the movies in the Twilight Saga move so slow you’ll start to think you’re dead with Edward before the end of the film. I don’t know, but Becky and I just don’t see the excitement of this “love story”, it’s really pretty lame. This one had more excitement than the first movie since the character Jacob, her friend, discovers he’s a werewolf and in love with her. That at least adds some conflict between the werewolf and the vampire as you wonder which one she’ll choose. She chooses the wrong one by the way, not to wreck the movie for you, but you’ll see what we mean if you go to this flick.

I think if you’re a fan of the books you’ll probably like this movie, but otherwise you’ll probably be really bored as we were. I have a client who’s teenage daughter already saw it three times within 24 hours of it opening and she loved it. I think that’s the target audience for this one.

In fairness though, not everyone agreed with my assessment of this film. Conroy really liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip and so did Bianca. Corban hated it and Becky thought it was a good rental at best.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Old Dogs

olddogsBecky and I took the kids to see the new John Travolta and Robin Williams movie Old Dogs last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO for Thanksgiving. The Yahoo website at Old Dogs describes the movie as follows:

“Two best friends — one unlucky-in-love divorcee and the other a fun-loving bachelor — have their lives turned upside down when they’re unexpectedly charged with the care of 7-year-old twins while on the verge of the biggest business deal of their lives. The not-so-kid-savvy bachelors stumble in their efforts to take care of the twins, leading to one debacle after another, and perhaps to a new-found understanding of what’s really important in life…”

The Review
Old Dogs is another movie that the “Critics” didn’t like at all. Most of them giving it a D for a rating, but once again we have to disagree with their reviews. Old Dogs is a very silly movie and most of it is pretty ridiculous, but it’s funny with plenty of laughs for a family film. Our kids thought it was a riot and John Travolta and Robin Williams characters are a good mix together for this comedy. There are plenty of laughs and they even poke fun at their age.

This is not a movie that you’ll be mentally stimulated by, but that’s not the purpose. You also won’t see some whacko’ running around slicing people up with a chainsaw or some of the other crap that Hollywood puts out as entertainment either. Old Dogs is a clean movie with some good old fashioned humor and some really funny parts like Robin Williams tattoo on his chest is a crackup.

The kids and Becky liked it much more than I did, but I still thought it was entertaining enough to rate it as a really good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Blind Side

blindsideBecky and I took the kids to see the new Sandra Bullock movie The Blind Side last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo website at The Blind Side describes the movie as follows:

“Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher’s presence in the Touhys’ lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle…”

The Review
The Blind Side is one of the best movies of the year, so it’s no wonder that the “Critics” are giving it a C+. The Critics loved that stupid movie Fantastic Mr. Fox, but something with actual substance, a great story, that is true no less, and that doesn’t have a bunch of political overtones with a token gay actor is something they don’t like. Needless to say, most of the Movie Critics are politically motivated idiots and this movie is great!

In fact, we didn’t find one person who saw this movie so far who didn’t absolutely love it. Everyone coming out of the film really enjoyed it and there are plenty of messages in this movie about giving to others, overcoming stereotypes and prejudice, being real and not giving into the common temptations of the world. The film is based on a true story of a family and it’s really quite amazing with a fantastic ending.

I’m not going to go into detail about the film here, but I’m just going to tell you to make sure you see it and you’ll be glad that you did. It’s rated PG-13 by the way and most of the issues went over our kid’s heads. Bianca didn’t like it that much since it was a bit above her 8 year old mentality, so you might want to stick with kids that are a little older or they will be bored. Corban really liked it though.

The Blind Side is definitely getting a Don’t Miss It from us.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Fantastic Mr. Fox

fantasticfoxIt’s Thanksgiving weekend and Becky and I are up in Breckenridge with the kids taking in some great Colorado skiing and snowboarding, but before we came up here we went to see the new cartoon Fantastic Mr. Fox yesterday. We went to the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Fantastic Mr. Fox describes the movie as follows:

“Mr. and Mrs. Fox (Clooney and Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristopherson (Eric Anderson). But after 12 years, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community….”

The Review
Fantastic Mr. Fox can be summed up in one word – “stupid”. I don’t know who the Producers of this film paid off to get such great reviews, but we all sat in the theater wondering if it would ever end. Fortunately, it was only 80 minutes long and when it ended we all looked at each other like we just wasted not just money, but our time. I said, “What the cuss was that?”. By the way, that’s what they say in this movie over and over again.

It’s another weird George Clooney flick, only this time he’s in a cartoon about a goofy fox and his friends. There are some funny parts of the film, it’s totally over the kids head and the movie was really lame.

Don’t waste a dime on this movie, go see A Christmas Carol instead. This is definitely a rental and it’s pretty bad when the kids all rated it a don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Disney’s A Christmas Carol

christmascarolBecky and I went to see the new flick Christmas Carol last week with our three children at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at A Christmas Carol describes the movie as follows:

“Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of an old miser who must face Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help to bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of A Christmas Carol. Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). His dynamic character roles keep the four characters as diverse as being played by four actors…”

The Review
Disney’s A Christmas Carol is an animated movie that is along the lines of Polar Express and other high-end animated films. This is the classic story of Scrooge and it’s done extremely well. In fact, it’s downright amazing! You will forget you’re watching an animated film. Jim Carrey does a fantastic job and this movie will get you into the spirit of Christmas. If you have a Movie Bucks card from Kerasotes you can see it for $5 and it’s definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

We didn’t opt for seeing the 3D version, but I’m sure that’s fantastic. The regular version of the film was great and this classic story by Charles Dickens just never gets old. It’s just a reminder of what’s really important in life and how easy it is to get caught up in the wrong things. Scrooge is just an amazing character and our kids had never seen the movie or read the book, so it was a whole new experience for them. Bianca was the only one that didn’t like it that much, so maybe stick with children who are 9 years old and up.

We would definitely recommend seeing this one for the Christmas Season.
