John & Becky’s Movie Review of Immortals

Yesterday, I went to see the new flick Immortals at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO that ended up being number one at the box office with 32 million in sales.  It’s only $5 to catch a movie at the Regal Cinema on Sunday, so I figured I would go see this film.  The Fandango website at Immortals, describes the movie as follows.

Power-hungry King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his ruthless army march across Greece, leaving burned-out villages and the corpses of the innocent in their wake. Hyperion’s goal is to find the long-lost Bow of Epirus; with this invincible weapon, he can cast the gods out of Mount Olympus and become master of the world. A stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) heeds the words of the sibylline oracle (Freida Pinto), who convinces him that he is the key to stopping the bloodthirsty king. “

The Review
Immortals was a movie that Becky had zero interest in seeing and I should have listened to her.  The critics said it was terrible and I usually don’t agree with them, but in this case they were right on the money.  Surprisingly, the viewers that I read reviews from liked this movie, which was why I thought I would give it a chance.  That was a big mistake.

It was produced by the same guy who did 300, which is another graphic war movie and extremely violent.  This film stars Mickey Rourke and a few other less well known actors, who all got in great shape for the film.  The acting is good and the story even has some interesting aspects to it, with the Greek gods and in search of a magical bow to unleash the Titans.  However, the acting can’t save this movie because it’s beyond disturbing in the use of violence.  If you enjoy seeing people cut their tongues off with a pair of scissors, other people getting their heads cut off, throats slit, murder, people being burned alive and all sorts of other brutality than this is your kind of movie.  It was disturbing and there wasn’t much more to this film beyond the non-stop violence.

It reminded me of why God destroyed the Earth with a Flood the first time around because men only did and thought of evil continually and there was so much violence on Earth.  I don’t think this one is worth your time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Machine Gun Preacher

Last week, Becky and I went to see the new movie Machine Gun Preacher in Denver at the Mayan Theater. The Fandango website at Machine Gun Preacher, describes the movie as follows:

In this inspirational true story, Machine Gun Preacher is about Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Gerard Butler (300) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster’s (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) moving story of violence and redemption… “

The Review
Machine Gun Preacher is an amazing true story about Sam Childers and his amazing wife.  She put up with his insane antics as a thug, after she became a Christian and stuck with him through thick and thin.

The movie is a very powerful.  It’s an incredible story about love, hate, redemption and taking charge of a situation when nobody else wants to do anything.  The film also shows that one person with God really can make a difference.  The movie is based on the book – Another Man’s War: The True Story of One Man’s Battle to Save Children in the Sudan, which is an incredible story.

Becky and I had a chance to see and meet Sam and his wife at TheRock.org church in Castle Rock, CO when he came to visit recently.  His testimonial is really incredible and he pointed out that once he accepted Christ, he never went back to drinking like they showed he did in the movie.  He said, “That was Hollywood trying to make the movie more exciting, but it wasn’t true.”.

The critics didn’t like this movie because the Media in America cannot stand anything to do with Christianity, but it is definitely a Don’t Miss It in our book.  It’s not for kids though, even though it’s a Christian movie, so be aware that it is rated R for a reason.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Paranormal Activity 3

Last week, I went to see the new movie Paranormal Activity 3 in Castle Rock at the AMC Theater with my friend Rod. The Fandango website at Paranormal Activity 3, describes the movie as follows:

In 1988 sisters Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) seem to be enjoying a normal, happy childhood at home. But when strange things start going bump in the night, their father, a wedding videographer, decides to use his cameras to discover the source, especially since Kristi appears to having conversations with an imaginary friend. While the cameras do indeed reveal a flurry of supernatural occurrences, the family is unprepared for the terror that awaits… “

The Review
Paranormal Activity 3 is the third installment of the Paranormal Activity series.  The first two were creepy, but this one has them beat.  It’s a spooky show that takes you back to show what originally happened to the young girls and how they became familiar with the demon that is terrorizing their lives.

What’s crazy is how accurate this film is about how people can become influenced by the demonic, usually at a very young age.  What’s interesting about this movie franchise is that it’s very low budget, with hardly any special effects graphics.  You never see the monster, but you see the results of the monster.  It uses the imagination of the audience to conjure up what the spooky creature is that has violated the home of this young family.

It’s definitely creepy and the scariest of the three films.  There is a very wild twist at the end of the film.  This movie isn’t for everyone for sure.  If you like scary movies, you should get spooked by this flick, but if you don’t like the fear factor you should skip this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Ides of March

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Ides of March tonight at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The Moviefone website at The Ides of March, which is another good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

George Clooney goes behind the camera for the fourth time to direct The Ides of March, an adaptation of Beau Willimon‘s play Farragut North. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as Stephen Myers, an idealistic deputy campaign manager for Governor Mike Morris (Clooney) who is in a major political battle in Ohio that could be the key to winning the Democratic nomination for the Presidency. When the opposing candidate’s campaign manager (Paul Giamatti) offers Stephen a job on his staff, Stephen neglects to inform his boss (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Just as that omission is revealed, Stephen uncovers a dirty personal secret that could sink Morris’ political career. The Ides of Marchscreened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. – Perry Seibert, Rovi… “

The Review
The Ides of March is a behind the scenes look of what it’s like for a candidate to run for President and the people who help put him in the White House.  In this case, the film is written and directed by George Clooney and he plays one of the main characters, but it’s more about Ryan Gosling’s character who is the brains behind his political campaign.

The film moves really slow initially and then it starts to get interesting in the second half of the movie with some unexpected twists and turns.  It shows how idealistic the people helping politicians get elected are, but how pathetic and what liars the people they are supporting really are, which is a pretty good assessment of the political arena.  As my grandfather used to say, “I never met an honest politician.” and he had met many of them.

The movie is very well done, but I didn’t like the ending.  The ending leaves you hanging in my opinion.  I was glad that the candidate was a Democrat because it showed that it doesn’t matter what Party the candidate is from, they all have skeletons that they put in their closet – all by themselves.  We saw it with our friends Mark and Maria and they liked the film too.  We thought it was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of What’s Your Number?

Last night Becky and I went to see the new movie What’s Your Number at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Moviefone website at What’s Your Number, which is another good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

Inspired by author Karyn Bosnak‘s novel 20 Times a Lady, director Mark Mylod‘s freewheeling comedy tells the tale of one hopelessly single women who’s convinced she’s passed up the man of her dreams. Upon reading a magazine article that leaves her dejected about her future marriage prospects, Ally Darling (Anna Faris) begins to fear that one of her many ex-boyfriends may have been “the one that got away.” Now, with a little help from her mischievous neighbor (Chris Evans), Ally is paying a visit to each of her exes in order to reel in the perfect catch… “

The Review
What’s Your Number is a cute comedy about a woman who discovers that she has slept with too many men after reading about the number of men most women sleep with before getting married. She’s thinking that her chance for meeting “Mr. Right” is doomed because of how she has lived her life.  The film is pretty goofy, but it’s funny.

The critics didn’t like this movie, but Becky and I, along with most of the people in the theater seemed to like it.  It’s not a great movie, but it’s a cute romantic comedy that will make for a good rental.  The language is a little rough at times, so be forewarned.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Killer Elite

Last week Becky took the kids to see Dolphin Tale, which I guess they liked, and I went to see the new movie Killer Elite at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The Moviefone website at Killer Elite, which is another good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

Based on a true story, ‘Killer Elite’ races across the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East in the action-packed account of an ex-special ops agent (Jason Statham) who is lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor (Robert Deniro… “

The Review
Killer Elite is based on a true story, but as I watched it I kept wondering how much of it was reality and how much was Hollywood make believe.  I should have known with a name like Killer Elite that it would be somewhat disturbing and it was definitely graphic at times.  It’s hard to get emotionally attached to characters, who have no problem killing other people and that’s the problem with this movie.

The story is fascinating since it is hard to believe that there are really hired killers like this movie portrays, but it’s rather boring at times.  It also doesn’t make a great deal of sense that some guy is going to quit being a hired killer and then come out of retirement to save his buddy, who got himself into a pickle.  He also happens to be the best of the best and he suddenly grew a conscience after years of killing people for profit, which was hard to believe.  Especially, when he interacts with the other main character who is out to kill him and his crew.

Robert Deniro is getting too old to play in these type of movies.  He needs to stay with films like Meet The Fockers and skip the “killer elite” type flicks.  I think his character hurt this film because he was definitely not believable in this tough guy role.  I can’t rate this one as Worth The Trip.  It’s a good three dollar rental, if you’re into action films, but it’s kind of boring at times and pretty graphic.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Moneyball

Becky and I went to see the new movie Moneyball last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our son Corban, who is a little league baseball player. The Fandango website at Moneyball, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), general manager of the Oakland A’s, one day has an epiphany: Baseball’s conventional wisdom is all wrong. Faced with a tight budget, Beane must reinvent his team by outsmarting the richer ball clubs. Joining forces with Ivy League graduate Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), Beane prepares to challenge old-school traditions. He recruits bargain-bin players whom the scouts have labeled as flawed, but have game-winning potential. Based on the book”

The Review
Moneyball is a cool movie about the inside workings of Major League Baseball.  Brad Pitt is really good in this film as the character Billy Beane and the story is entertaining.  It’s a long flick though, probably about a half hour too long.  The Directing made us agonize a few times, as we watched the main character sit around checking his text messages, instead of watching his team play a ball game.

This movie would have been much better had they had more baseball in the film, instead of so much of it being just about the players, the management and the owners.  That’s the story though, it’s about the business of baseball and not a baseball movie.  Nevertheless, it’s still interesting because of Brad Pitt and his sidekick, Jonah Hill, that pretty much make the film.  The story is interesting and the ending is really amazing because of the way baseball has forever changed based on the system that was created by Billy Beane and his “genius” assistant.

I really liked this movie and thought it was Worth The Trip.  I wouldn’t rate it a Don’t Miss It, since it was a bit boring at times, but it was worth the price of admission for sure.  If you like baseball you should like this film.  Becky liked it too, but Corban was bored out of his head.  They also used the “F” word once, so be forewarned before you take your younger kids.  Most young kids won’t like this movie because it’s about the business of baseball, trying to create a winning team, much more than baseball itself.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of I Don’t Know How She Does It

Becky and I went to see the new movie I Don’t Know How She Does It a couple of weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at I Don’t Know How She Does It, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

As an employee at a Boston-based financial firm, Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker) struggles daily to balance the demands of her high-powered career with the needs of her husband (Greg Kinnear) and children. When she gets an account that requires fre quent trips to New York and her husband gets a new job, Kate finds herself spread even thinner. Complicating Kate’s life even more is new business associate Jack Abelhammer (Pierce Brosnan), who throws temptation into the mix.”

The Review
I Don’t Know How She Does It is a cute movie about a modern working woman who has way too much on her plate, while trying to raise her family.  The story is good, it’s definitely a “Chick Flick”, but it shows how crazy it is for many working woman today to manage children, manage a career, and keep her marriage.

There are opportunities for the family to call it quits increases as the stress becomes great for both of the parents try to juggle their careers and family responsibilities.  There are also a temptation for the main character to leave her husband and run off with a millionaire that she has been working close without throughout the film.

I liked this movie and so did Becky, but it’s not a fantastic and memorable movie.  It has a good message about family and juggling work, while not getting so carried away in a career that it destroys your family in the process.  I think it’s fitting for today where careers can be lost quickly and it’s getting more and more difficult for people to “just say No.” to their bosses for fear of losing their jobs.  I think the critics didn’t like it because we’re in an Economy where many people don’t have a job.  Becky and I would both rent this movie as a good Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Straw Dogs

Becky and I went to see the new movie Straw Dogs a few weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Straw Dogs, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.

The Review
Straw Dogs is a disturbing movie about a married couple that moves to the woman’s home town and hire her old flame and her buddies to work on their home.  Unfortunately, the crew they have hired are classic “Rednecks” that are High School football buddies.  They start harassing their new employers and lusting after the woman to the point that fantasy turns to desire and lust leads to murder.

The movie was okay, it’s a bit too disturbing because the characters are so aggressive and willing to commit murder.  It also portrays the guys in the South as just being total “hicks” as a Hollywood stereotype.  The film is definitely intense and exciting, but there really isn’t much of a story or character development, instead just pretty people involved in a conflict.

It’s a Rental at best and probably a Don’t Bother, but we’ll rate it a Rental since it does have some good aspects to it as a Horror Movie.  It’s more of a Horror flick than a Thriller because of the ‘gore’ factor.  I don’t think most people will like this film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Drive

Becky and I went to see the new movie Drive last night at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Drive, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“A Hollywood stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver for thieves finds that a price has been put on his head after a failed robbery.

The Review
Drive is one of the worst movies we’ve seen in a long time.  What’s crazy is that the critics said it was “Extraordinary”, really?  All we can figure is because Albert Brooks is playing a bad guy, which is pretty unbelievable in itself, and Ryan Gosling is probably going to get “Sexiest Man Alive” on People Magazine this year.  Other than that we can’t figure out what they could possibly like about this film?

The name Drive you would think there would be some incredible driving, but there’s not much driving in this movie.  What there is though is dialogue like a 1970’s movie, music like a 1980’s movie and more graphic violence than a Quentin Tarantino flick.  Some of the violence in this movie is downright disturbing, like when the main character kicks the head in of a thug, until his head is no longer there.  It was demented.

The only good thing about this movie was the Preview.  As one woman said coming out of the film, “There is more dialogue in a Dr. Seuss book than that movie.”.  The bottom line is that this movie sucked in a big way.  Drive this movie off a cliff and “Don’t Bother”.
