Becky and I went to see the new Steven Spielberg movie Super 8 last night in Castle Rock at the AMC Theater. The Fandango website at Super 8 describes the movie as follows:
“In 1979 Ohio, several youngsters (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso) are making a zombie movie with a Super-8 camera. In the midst of filming, the friends witness a horrifying train derailment and are lucky to escape with their lives. They soon discover that the catastrophe was no accident, as a series of unexplained events and disappearances soon follows. Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler), the father of one of the kids, searches for the terrifying truth behind the crash.“
The Review
Super 8 takes place in the 1970’s with a group of young kids making a movie when a train wreck takes place and there is something on the train that effects the entire town in which the boys live. The film is pretty exiting with lots of action and suspense, but it reminded me of a remake of E.T., which was also a Spielberg film. However, this movie was written and Directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Spielberg. And this time the alien isn’t friendly like E.T., but a monster that is terrorizing the town.
The story is good, the Directing is quality, but it’s a little boring at times. It has a few scary parts and some funny parts as well, but it jumps around a ton with the focus on a family and the challenges they face after the boy’s Mother dies. There is quite a bit going on in the film and there is a cast of characters like something out of Goonies or The Sandlot.
We didn’t think it was a great film, but it was entertaining and worth the trip to the theater. I’m sure that Spielberg grabbed the script because some of the characters in the film probably reminded him of himself as a kid with their passion for movie making. It has the sci-fi element that may not appeal to everyone, with somewhat of a horror movie going on as well.
