John & Becky’s Movie Review of Take Me Home Tonight

Becky and I went to see Take Me Home Tonight last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at Take Me Home Tonight describes the movie as follows:

“Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria…”

The Review
Take Me Home Tonight is another comedy that looked like it could be pretty good from the Previews, however that was not the case. They showed almost all of the funny parts of the film in the Previews and they really were not that funny. The acting was pretty good, couple of the characters were interesting and the majority were totally ridiculous. The story itself was really lame about a guy who wants a girl from High School and for some reason after going to MIT has put his life on hold because he doesn’t know what he wants to do, except get the girl he had in High School who doesn’t know he exists.

Why this film had to take place in the 80’s we do not know? It didn’t make a great deal of sense, it was not very funny and was “strange” at best. They probably should have just made a movie about the boy wanting the girl and falling in love and kept all the other nonsense out of it. It tried to be a romantic comedy and failed at both. I would have to say this film is a rental at best. Becky really didn’t like it at all.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Hall Pass

Becky and I went to see Hall Pass last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friend Brent who was visiting from Minnesota. The MovieFone website at Hall Pass describes the movie as follows:

“This buddy comedy from the Farrelly brothers stars Jason Sudakis and Owen Wilson as a couple of married guys who persuade their wives to give them the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free-card: a marriage Hall Pass. The agreement gives them free reign to behave like bachelors, free from the rules and confines of fidelity, responsibility, and married life, for one week. But soon the guys find the small town where everybody knows them – and their wives — isn’t very conducive to chasing tail…”

The Review
Hall Pass is a movie we thought would be pretty funny based on the Previews, but unfortunately they showed anything that was worth watching in the movie trailers. Once we got into the theater, spent our money to watch this film, we realized we had been duped into buying a ticket for a really stupid movie.

The jokes were totally crude, the story was lame, the acting was terrible. There wasn’t anything really good to say about Hall Pass, except that we were glad when it was over.

Don’t waste your time even renting this movie. It’s a complete waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Roommate

Becky and I went to see The Roommate a couple weeks ago at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Rod & Kimberly. The Fandango website at The Roommate describes the movie as follows:

“An emotionally unstable college freshman (Leighton Meester) grows obsessed with her unsuspecting roommate in Danish director Christian E. Christiansen’s English-language debut…”

The Review
The Roommate is a film about a woman who goes to college and gets an insane roommate who is infatuated with her friendship. Before you know it the psychopath is murdering people and trying to control the life of the main character. There are a few parts that will make you jump.

However, this movie wasn’t done very well. The college girls were played by women who were too old for the parts. The characters were not very believable. The story was like a remake of the film “Single White Female” targeted to a new audience that wouldn’t have seen that film before.

It’s a good rental at best. We all felt that it just wasn’t that great of a flick.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

Becky and I took Bianca to see Justin Bieber: Never Say Never last week the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Justin Bieber: Never Say Never describes the movie as follows:

“Singing sensation Justin Bieber prepares to dazzle the crowd at a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. Legions of adoring fans scream as he takes center stage for a memorable night of music. Concert footage mixes with home videos of Justin playing drums and showcasing his talent at a young age…”

The Review
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is a documentary about the rise to fame of pop star Justin Bieber. Our daughter Bianca wanted to see this movie and I took her to go and see it. Becky wanted to see it and crashed our party.

This movie was really well done. I didn’t think we would like it, but it was really fascinating to see how Justin Bieber went from being a kid in Canada to a global superstar using the power of social media with Twitter and Facebook. The music was actually really good with stars like Miley Cyrus and others coming on the stage to perform with Justin. He’s a neat kid and if he stays out of trouble could be the next Michael Jackson based on the enormous fan base.

What was really fun about the film was watching the girls in the film and in the theater go unbelievably nuts. We all though it was a good time and very entertaining.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Eagle

Becky and I went to see The Eagle last night the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Eagle describes the movie as follows:

“A Roman epic adventure, based on the classic novel of the same name, set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth…”

The Review
The Eagle is an action flick starring Channing Tatum as the new Commander in the ancient Roman army. He has been assigned to the Northern territory of Scotland and the people there hate the Romans and want to kill them.   He is on a personal quest to reclaim a golden eagle that was lost by his father’s legion twenty years earlier.

The movie has plenty of action. There are a few disturbing parts in the movie, but overall it’s very well done. The cinematography is really good, but the story is really simple. There isn’t much to the movie, but the action is exciting.

Becky and I both liked The Eagle and thought it was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of I Am Number Four

Becky and I went to see I Am Number Four this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at I Am Number Four describes the movie as follows:

“Three are dead. He is Number Four. D.J. Caruso (“Eagle Eye,” “Disturbia”) helms an action-packed thriller about an extraordinary young man, John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), who is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant), John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events…”

The Review
I Am Number Four is a science fiction flick about space aliens that are looking to take over planet Earth, but there are other space aliens living among us, who are ready to defend our world. It’s kind of a fun movie, if you like science fiction and alien flicks, with some interesting characters and situations. Plenty of action as well.

Becky doesn’t like these movies at all, so she hated this one. In fact, we walked out of the movie and she spotted the Big Momma movie next door to our theater, she said, “I would have rather saw Big Momma.”. Needless to say, she wasn’t in the least bit entertained by I Am Number Four.

I thought it was a pretty good flick overall, but it’s a bit of a teenager film. It had some “SuperMan” type elements with an alien teenager, who is discovering his super powers and fighting against evil. I can’t say it was a great flick, but it’s a good rental for sure. Becky will be happy if she never sees it again.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Rite

Becky and I went to see The Rite this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at The Rite describes the movie as follows:

“Inspired by author Matt Baglio’s nonfiction book of the same name, director Mikael Håfström’s supernatural thriller traces the experiences of a young seminary student who discovers the true power of faith after being drafted into the Vatican’s Exorcism School and confronted by the forces of darkness. – Jason Buchanan, Rovi…”

The Review
The Rite is a disturbing film.  It stars Anthony Hopkins and a newcomer to the Big Screen, Colin O’Donoghue, as priests who perform the ritual of exorcising demons. The Rite is not super scary, don’t get me wrong it’s scary, but more disturbing than scary because it’s based on true events and a non-fiction book about real demon possessions. It’s not like The Exorcist, but it’s freaky because you see the power of the demonic and the Devil in creating deception and harming people.

Parts of this film are nuts. It’s fascinating and wild because you watch a young man struggle with his faith about whether he believes the Devil and the demonic, which therefore makes him question if God is real. The demons he is fighting capitalize on his lack of faith and that doubt nearly costs him his life. The acting in this film is fantastic. Anthony Hopkins delivers again like he did in Silence of the Lambs. The guy is just so good at playing really creepy characters.

We saw this film with our friends Rod and Kimberly and we all liked it. I think it’s a movie that everyone should see. It’s rated PG-13 and probably should have been rated R, so don’t take your kids to this one. However, for adults, I think that all too often we discount the supernatural and fail to realize that the Devil is a real fallen angel that is out to destroy God’s creation. You’ll get that message loud in clear in this film. You just might find yourself opening your Bible again, if you haven’t in a while and asking God to forgive your sins, so you can be make sure that you don’t end up in the dark – now or in the future.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Mechanic

Becky and I went to see The Mechanic last night at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at The Mechanic describes the movie as follows:

“‘Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a “mechanic” — an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It’s a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed…”

The Review
The Mechanic is a film that I was really looking forward to seeing.  I like Jason Statham in his action flicks.  He always has great action in his flicks, super cool cars and sometimes a good story.  However, some of this movies like Crank for example, totally suck and that’s one of the challenges with his movies.  They can be a hit or a miss.

The Mechanic is definitely a miss.  It’s just non-stop violence without a real story that is very interesting where you can get emotionally attached to the characters.  He’s a “mechanic”, which is a fancy name for a hit man, and he’s definitely the best at his job.  He takes another guy under his wings though who is just into killing people and the film gets super violent and it just isn’t fun, but ridiculous.

We can’t say this is worth the price of admission.  Becky thought it was a total waste of time and I would rate it a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Dilemma

Becky and I went to see The Dilemma last weekend at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at The Dilemma describes the movie as follows:

“‘Longtime friends Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) are partners in an auto-design firm. They are hard at work on a presentation for a dream project that would really launch their company. Then Ronny spots Nick’s wife out with another man , and in the process of investigating the possible affair, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. As the presentation nears, Ronny agonizes over what might happen if the truth gets out.”

The Review
The Dilemma is a pretty funny movie with a great cast. The characters are a bit nuts, especially Vince Vaughn’s character Ronny. The story is kind of strange about the struggle between two characters trying to communicate with one another, after Vince’s character discovers that his business partner’s wife is cheating on his partner.

Kevin Jame’s wife is played by Winona Ryder, who is having an affair with Channing Tatum’s character and they do a great job in the movie too. All the acting in this film is very good, with an all-star cast and there are some really funny parts and lines in the film. Overall though, the story was not fantastic, but it was funny. We both liked it, but we would probably wait for the rental on this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Green Hornet

Becky and I went to see The Green Hornet last week at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO with our two boys Conroy & Corban. The Fandango website at The Green Hornet describes the movie as follows:

“‘Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), the heir to the largest newspaper fortune in Los Angeles, is a spoiled playboy who has thus far been happy to lead an aimless life. After his father dies, Britt meets Kato (Jay Chou), a resourceful company employee. Realizing that they have the talent and resources to make something of their lives, Britt and Kato join forces as costumed crimefighters to bring down the city’s most powerful criminal.”

The Review
The Green Hornet is another super hero movie, but it’s not like any other super hero movie.  The story is about a young guy who’s Dad is rich and when he passes away his son decides to fight crime, but he’s a total goof. He teams up with a sidekick, Kato that has mad skills as a martial artist and has fantastic abilities in creating super cool cars and gadgets.

The story is really cool, along with the cars.  The chemistry with the characters is great and this movie was way more fun than I thought it would be.  My only complaint is that it was way too violent.  I’ve noticed that most of the super hero type films are becoming extremely violent while still pushing the limits of the PG-13 rating instead of R.

The film also stars Cameron Diaz as the assistant to Seth Rogen and there were some cool dynamics between all of them that made it entertaining.  Overall, we all liked this film and it’s done pretty well at the box office.
