John & Becky’s Movie Review of How Do You Know

Becky and I went to see the new Reese Witherspoon film, How Do You Know last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO. The MSN Movie website at How Do You Know describes the movie as follows:

“‘Director James L. Brooks returns to the helm for this ensemble comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson, and centering on the story of a passionate athlete who finds herself romantically torn between a narcissistic baseball star and a straight-laced businessman. As far back as Lisa (Witherspoon) can remember, her life has been defined by sports. Then, in the blink of an eye, she’s cut from the team. Her identity in crisis as she attempts to regain her footing in life, Lisa begins dating Matty (Wilson), a Major League Baseball pitcher and notorious womanizer. Meanwhile, terminally honest businessman George (Rudd) finds himself on the road to financial ruin or worse after being wrongly implicated in a financial crime…”

The Review
How Do You Know is a funny romantic comedy about a girl who is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life after her career as an athlete comes to an abrupt end. Reese Witherspoon plays the main character Lisa and she does a good job in this movie. Becky commented that anytime they showed her she had on a pair of shorts or a dress to show off her legs and she definitely got in shape for this film.

Paul Rudd plays a business man who is in crisis because of his narcissistic father played by Jack Nicholson that has put him in a tough situation with the Federal Government. Those two characters were great together, although Jack is showing his age.

Owen Wilson plays a baseball player who is a crack-up because he’s so incredibly full of himself. There are some good lines from his character and the others.

Overall we both really liked this movie. It was worth the trip in our opinion, but for some people may think it’s a better rental. Should be a good date movie though.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Tourist

Becky and I went to see the new Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film, The Tourist last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO with our friends Rod and Kimberly. The Fandango website at The Tourist describes the movie as follows:

“‘Revolves around Frank, an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path…”

The Review
The Tourist has plenty of Star Power with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The story is very clever and keeps you guessing, much like that movie The Thomas Crown Affair. I have to give credit to Rod and Kimberly for that one, but it’s much like that movie with some mystery and the fact that it keeps you guessing up until the end of the film.

The Tourist is really well done. The cinematography and setting in Italy is very cool. The characters are very mysterious and interesting. Johnny and Angelina work very well together in this movie, so they cast the roles good and it was Directed well also. The story though is fun and that’s what I liked about it.

Becky fell asleep the first time we saw it and she went back and saw it again on her own with a girlfriend. She liked it much better the second time she said because she knew what was going on in the movie. It will make you think the first time around because there are plenty of twists and turns with the characters, which is what I thought made it such an entertaining film.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one. Rod and Kimberly both liked it and so did Becky and I.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Love and Other Drugs

Becky and I went to see the flick, Love and Other Drugs on opening night at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Love and Other Drugs describes the movie as follows:

“‘A salesman competes in the cutthroat world of pharmaceuticals to hawk a male performance enhancement drug. Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman…”

The Review
Love and Other Drugs is really summed up in the description above. There isn’t much to this movie beyond it being about a salesman, who is trying to figure out how he can sell more drugs to doctors and rise to the top of his drug company to impress his family. Supposedly, it’s the drug Viagra that is going to make him a superstar. After all, he’s not only a great salesman, but good at picking up women and having sex with them.

This movie should have been called “Sex and Other Drugs” because that’s about all Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway do for two hours. It’s like watching a pornographic movie after a while and you’re wondering how shallow this movie can really be. He does remember her name. We didn’t know that the movie poster of the two of them in bed would be pretty much the entire movie, just in different settings with some other shallow characters thrown in as filler. If that’s what you’re looking for this is definitely your movie, otherwise it pretty much sucked.

In fairness, there is this whole element of Anne Hathaway’s character having an incurable disease and since he works for a drug company that’s supposed to have some message in it I guess. The message is that the drug companies are more concerned about selling sex drugs than curing diseases, not that sex doesn’t sell since that’s all this movie is selling for two hours. The main character also isn’t sure if he wants to stay with a woman he’s falling in love with since she is going to die from her disease, but he sure likes being with her.

In addition, we both thought that it really paints doctors in a bad light as nothing more than glorified drug pushers, who are looking for their next thrill ride and perk. Not all of them of course, but several in the film are just concerned about their perks from the drug companies and not their patients health and that was a bit ridiculous.

Overall, we found this movie to be a waste of time and Hollywood fantasy land. We can’t recommend it, it’s a rental at best.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

I took the kids to see the new Harry Potter movie this Thanksgiving weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows describes the movie as follows:

“Without the guidance and protection of their professors, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) begin a mission to destroy the Horcruxes, the sources of Voldemort’s immortality. Though they must rely on one another more than ever, dark forces threaten to tear them apart. Voldemort’s Death Eaters have seized control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, and they are searching for Harry — even as he and his friends prepare for the ultimate showdown…”

The Review
Harry Potter movies are coming to an end with this first installment of the final chapter in the life of Harry Potter and his friends. It is quite exciting with incredible special effects as usual. Becky didn’t want to go and see it. She is not a fan of these movies, so I guess you either really like Harry Potter movies or you don’t.

I tend to like these films and they do extremely well at the box office since so many people have read the Harry Potter book series. Harry has now come of age and in this adventure he is having to battle some pretty scary characters as he comes to the final showdown against his arch enemy. It’s kind of a bummer that it was done in two installments, but it’s a quick way for the studio to make more money off of this blockbuster.

This final chapter is really a great flick. I haven’t talked to anyone yet who didn’t like it and everyone is waiting for part two that will arrive next year to see how it comes to an end. My son Conroy is finishing the book series and like most people reading the books, he is telling me that the book is so much better than the movie. I can’t bring myself to read the books though having seen all the films. If you’re a Harry Potter fan and you’ve seen the other movies, this is definitely a Don’t Miss it otherwise it’s probably a Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Tangled

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie Tangled this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Tangled describes the movie as follows:

“When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty towerbound teen with 70 feet of magical , golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. In theaters this holiday season in Disney Digital 3D™, “Tangled” is a story of adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair…”

The Review
As you would expect from a Disney film, the animation in Tangled was fantastic. For a while, you’ll forget you’re watching a cartoon. Not only did it have great artwork, but this was a really fun story that was great for the whole family regardless of age.

We went to see it with our friends Chris and Hope and their two children, Severan and Kaden, along with our three wild children. Everyone liked this movie and thought it was really fun.

Tangled has pulled in over $49 million at the Box office, so it’s a big hit. It’s being shown in Digital 3D as well as the old fashioned 2D version and we all opted for skipping the extra cost for the 3D. It was great without the 3D. I’m not a huge musical fan, but there are some good songs in the movie by Mandy Moore and Donna Murphy (the witch), who sings a song called “Mother Knows Best” that was very well done and rather funny. The hero in the film is a real dork and that makes it all the more entertaining.

The characters in this film were great and it is the classic Brother’s Grimm fairy tale about the girl, Rupunzel, with her long hair kept in a tower for her magical hair. Only there are some twists to this updated version of the story. This is definitely one to put on the list this Holiday Season, if you haven’t seen it already.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Next Three Days

Becky and I went to see the new Russell Crowe flick, The Next Three Days last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at The Next Three Days describes the movie as follows:

“‘Life for John and Lara Brennan (Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks) is miserable after she is convicted of a murder she says she did not commit. Three years later while struggling with the demands of work and raising his son alone, John is still trying to establish her innocence. When her final appeal is rejected, Lara becomes suicidal, forcing John to exercise the only option he has left: Break her out of prison…”

The Review
The Next 3 Days is a wild thrill ride into the world of a husband and wife who find themselves in a total mess after she is convicted of killing her boss. You don’t know if she has done the crime or not throughout the movie, but her husband, is convinced that she is innocent.

This movie is done extremely well and it will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wonder what choices the characters are going to make given their situation. It also shows how easy it would be to get convicted of a crime and find yourself behind bars, which we already know happens all the time in the United States given the new DNA testing finding people innocent. In this case though, there isn’t anyway that DNA tests would be possible because of the type of crime, which adds another element of suspense to the movie.

The Next Three Days has plenty of action, suspense, drama and it’s exciting. It was definitely worth the price of admission and is one of the better films we’ve seen lately, so put it on your list if you’re looking for a good film to check out.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Faster

Becky and I went to see the new Dwayne Johnson, Faster last night at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Faster describes the movie as follows:

“‘An ex-con is out to avenge his brother’s death after they were double-crossed during a heist years ago…”

The Review
Faster should have been slower and the Director could have taken more time to create a better movie. This movie was beyond the realm of nonsense. The main character has been shot in the head, now has a metal plate and is therefore somehow indestructible. This is not going to win Dwayne Johnson an Oscar that’s for sure.

Throw into the mix Billy Bob Thornton who plays a cop that is getting ready to retire, but has serious family and drug problems and the movie starts to get a little strange. That’s not all, they added to the list of characters a hired killer that is out to get the main character, but he’s not just any hired gun. He’s a handsome well tuned machine with a gorgeous girlfriend who wants him to give up his profession as a “hit man” and have a family. He has issues though, after all, he made it big in the dot com era and is a multi-millionaire who now kills people for sport. Yeah, it’s a very whacked out film.

I won’t bother telling you anymore. This is definitely a Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Unstoppable

Becky and I went to see the new Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our son Conroy and Bianca. The Fandango website at Unstoppable describes the movie as follows:

“‘Denzel Washington and Star Trek’s Chris Pine star in this action thriller from director Tony Scott. The plot surrounds two locomotive operators who team up to stop a runaway train filled with explosives…”

The Review
Unstoppable is a movie that is based on true events, which we are to assume I guess to be a true story about an unmanned train that has gone rogue heading toward Stanton, PA. Of course, how much of it is true we don’t really know, but it’s very exciting and action packed.

The language in this movie sucked. They were constantly taking God’s name in vain and the swearing got a bit annoying after while, especially when you have your kids in the movie with you. I guess if you work for a train company you only know four letter words and how to swear in order to communicate. Beyond that the movie doesn’t have a great deal of substance, it’s kind of like the movie “Speed” where the bus can’t slow down, only now we were watching a train that can’t stop.

Even though it’s not a super story with a complex plot, but the movie was very exciting. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you’ll scratch your head at the stupidity of Corporate Executives some times with the decisions they make. You also see the power of the human spirit and the risks these men were willing to take to save lives and do their jobs. It was a cool movie and we all enjoyed it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Morning Glory

Becky and I went to see the new flick Morning Glory on Friday night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Morning Glory describes the movie as follows:

“‘Newly hired as a producer on a national morning-news program called “Daybreak,” Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) decides to revitalize the low-rated show by bringing in legendary anchorman Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) . Pomeroy, however, refuses to do puff pieces like celebrity gossip and fashion, and clashes with his co-host (Diane Keaton) . Meanwhile, Becky’s romance with a colleague begins to unravel, leaving her struggling to save her relationship, her job and “Daybreak” itself…”

The Review
Morning Glory is a cute and entertaining film about a woman who has a dream, played by Rachel McAdams of being on the Today Show since she was a child. She’s a work-a-holic and has always believed that by outworking everyone she would get ahead, but the Corporate guys are concerned about one thing – The Bottom Line. If she can’t turn this struggling television show around she’s going to be out on the street again.

She gets the break of her life by getting to be the Producer of a dying morning television show called DayBreak on a major network and has a chance to prove herself. That is easier said than done though because there are some crazy personalities involved in creating a television show.

One of these people is a character played by Harrison Ford, who is a bit like Dan Rather, as a former professional news anchor. The last thing he wants to do is drop down to the pathetic level of entertainment television, but he doesn’t have many options any longer. When you add in Diane Keaton’s character, who is his co-host that loves her job, a former Beauty Queen, but can’t stand the people she works with, it’s a pretty funny movie.

The acting in this movie is good as you might expect. The story is enjoyable. It’s not an Oscar contender, but it’s a good film that we found entertaining.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of MegaMind

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie MegaMind this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at MegaMind describes the movie as follows:

“DreamWorks Animation presents this satirical take on the superhero genre focusing on a down-and-out supervillain (voiced by Will Ferrell) who has to learn how to get his groove back when he’s left without an arch nemesis in this comedy from directors Cameron Hood and Kyle Arthur Jefferson. Tina Fey and Jonah Hill fill out the rest of the toplined voice cast…”

The Review
Wow, I am so behind on movie reviews, but I had to write one about this awesome new flick MegaMind. MegaMind – “Incredibly, handsome, master of all villany”. This movie was a crack-up! The characters are a riot and there are plenty of jokes with a bunch of adult and kid humor. The 80’s rock music added to it with some really funny situations.

We didn’t see it in 3D, but it was well worth the price of admission for 2D. The storyline is really good and Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey all play their characters extremely well. This is definitely going into the DVD collection when it comes out for purchase.

The movie has plenty of laughs and DreamWorks has done it again with this one. It reminded me a little bit of The Incredibles with the super hero genre and it was super fun.
