John & Becky’s Movie Review of Robin Hood

Becky and I went to see the new Robin Hood movie on Friday. The Fandango website at Robin Hood describes the movie as follows:

“Oscar® winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as “Robin Hood,” whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people…”

The Review
Robin Hood is the new Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett flick by Ridley Scott, who did the Gladiator film with Russell Crowe. The film was good, but it was way too long. It was too much like Gladiator meets Braveheart and that was the distraction of the film in that we’ve seen it already.

The story was interesting of course because it’s Robin Hood and the cinematography was great, but the movie was kind of boring. It was way too long and it just wasn’t very exciting as we expected it to be. Becky almost fell asleep a few times in the movie, so she wasn’t overly impressed with this flick. I liked the movie, but I didn’t like it enough to recommend that you go and sit in the theater for almost three hours. It’s not as good as you would expect.

We would both have to say to wait on this one. Becky didn’t even think it would make a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Iron Man 2

Becky and I took the kids to see the new Iron Man 2. The Fandango website at Iron Man 2 describes the movie as follows:

“The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces…”

The Review
Iron Man 2 is chapter two in the Iron Man saga and it’s a massive blockbuster at the box office already. There is plenty of great special effects, but not a ton of action in this film, which is probably the biggest let down of the film. Especially, with the new Avengers characters like Black Widow and Nick Fury. Although, there is a pretty awesome scene with Black Widow wiping out a bunch of bad guys and though I wouldn’t have cast Scarlett Johansson for the part, I think she does a great job with the character.

The story is almost the same as the first movie in that the bad guy is wanting to create a better Iron Man suit, which was surprising that they couldn’t come up with something a little more original. They have Whiplash in this one played by Mickey Rourke and he was great in this one too. The entire cast was really good and even though the action wasn’t all that great, the story wasn’t very original, the movie was still good.

Unlike the Wolverine series where the films keep getting better, the Iron Man movie is entertaining, but I didn’t think it was better than the first one. Becky liked it better, so it’s definitely personal preference. Still we all liked it and it’s definitely worth the price of admission, especially for comic book fans.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Furry Vengeance

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie Furry Vengeancelast week for Bianca’s 9 year Birthday. The Fandango website at Furry Vengeance describes the movie as follows:

“A real estate developer moves his family from Chicago to Oregon when his job calls for him to oversee the building of a major housing development. But, when his latest project threatens the homes of the local forest creatures, the animals seek revenge by turning a peaceful cul-de-sac under construction into a battlefield of epic proportions. It’s man versus nature and the fur is gonna fly!…”

The Review
Furry Vengeance is a movie that should have been a cartoon like Open Season. It was completely ridiculous and totally insulted the intelligence of any adult. It has the same kind of animation for the animals as what was found in Alvin and The Chimpmunks with the animals being even more intelligent than the Chipmunks.

I don’t want to be hard on this movie though because it wasn’t targeting adults, but children under ten years of age and Bianca and Corban really liked it. We went to see it for them, Conroy thought it was a rental and so did Becky. I would have to give this one a Don’t Bother unless you have kids ten and under who are looking for a clean cut fun movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Losers

Becky and I went to see the movie The Losers last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last week with our friends Rod & Kimberly Tactaquin. The Fandango website at The Losers describes the movie as follows:

“On a mission deep in the Bolivian jungle, a team of elite commandos (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans) find themselves on the receiving end of a lethal betrayal. Now presumed dead, the men join forces with a mysterious operative named Aisha (Zoe Saldana) to hunt down their enemy and even the score…”

The Review
The Losers is an action packed flick that is rated PG-13 and definitely should have been rated R for the violence. Becky didn’t like the movie since it should have been rated R and thought it was too disturbing since there were so many teenagers in the theater. I totally agree with Becky that it should have been rated R.

However, Kimberly, Rod and I all liked it and thought it was a good action flick, if you like action flicks. It’s not overly original, but the characters were kind of like the A-Team, with a group of misfits that have been setup by the bad guy. The bad guy was played by Jason Patric of Lost Boys fame and he’s not a nice guy, but extremely evil. It’s not a great movie, but the chemistry between the characters was fun and it’s far incredibly fetched like most action movies.

The Losers is a movie also based on a comic book series and is one of the reasons why it’s so far fetched, but it has some cool cinematography and very wild characters. I’m going to rate it Worth The Trip for action enthusiasts and because I liked it, but it’s probably a rental for most people.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Back-up Plan

I’ve been really behind in putting up some movie reviews lately. Becky and I went to see the movie The Back-up Plan a few weeks ago at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock. The Fandango website at The Back-up Plan describes the movie as follows:

“The Back-up Plan is a comedy that explores dating, love, marriage and family “in reverse.” After years of dating, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has decided waiting for the right one is taking too long. Determined to become a mother, she commits to a plan, makes an appointment and decides to go it alone. That same day, Zoe meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) – a man with real possibilities…”

The Review
The Back-up Plan stars Jennifer Lopez and it’s a cute movie that is great for a date night. However, it’s really targeted for people who have had children or are at least in their twenties. There were way too many teenagers in our movie theater and most of them didn’t really get the jokes since they haven’t lived long enough to have the experiences in the film.

It’s a chick flick and is pretty predictable, but it’s a fun movie. The story is clever and deals with a reality that is taking place more and more, as women look for alternatives to having children, without finding a suitable mate and getting married. In this case, Jennifer Lopez’s character has made this decision, but soon finds a man that might just fit the bill.

We both liked the film and thought it was worth the price of admission. It’s a very clean cut movie and was refreshing for a change compared to many of the movies we end up seeing. It may not stay in the theaters for very long though, but it should make for a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Kick-Ass

Becky and I went to see the movie Kick-Ass on Friday at a small theater in Edwards, CO. The Fandango website at Kick-Ass describes the movie as follows:

“KICK-ASS tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime….”

The Review
Kick-Ass is about a guy who is tired of being abused and ripped off and seeing other people taken advantage of, so he decides to put on a super hero outfit and go out fighting crime with no skills whatsoever. It sounds like a great concept for a movie, but unfortunately this film is crude, over-the-top violent and disturbing.

The fact that so many movie critics like this film should tell you to run from it and save your money. Most of them apparently have the mentality of a fifth-grader and seem to think that seeing an 11 year old girl dressed like Britney Spears in her debut music video and then killing people is good entertainment.

The movie is much like Kill Bill with star power from Nicholas Cage and extreme violence in a comic book format. It reminded me of that film Spirit that also totally sucked with it’s non-stop violence and nothing worthwhile to offer the viewer, beyond watching people get beat-up or murdered.

We were amazed that so many young kids were in this film when it was rated R. The movie was completely crazy and that was the problem with the movie and I’m amazed how many people have seen it and liked it, especially the critics. It just goes to show how pathetic our society has become toward violence.  Hollywood has to become more and more creative in their ways of showing people being murdered to create a “good” film since people are hanging out a home killing people daily on their video game screens.

In this movie, they put a guy into a giant microwave and watch him explode and then all stand around and laugh, along with the audience. How is that funny? It used to be that only the Nazi’s found the idea of torturing and murdering people in cruel and unusual ways entertaining, but not anymore.  I remember seeing Marlon Brando in The Godfather when I was young and Brando’s character had the head of a horse cut-off and put in a guy’s bed and the audience cringed.

In this film, the mobsters microwave a guy and the audience laughed. I don’t think I’m that old, but maybe I’m too old now for this kind of a film or maybe I’m just not so immature that I think murdering people is supposed to be funny. In the movie Casino, Martin Scorsese, has two of the characters murdered with baseball bats and nobody in the theater was laughing. The audience thought it was horrible, but not in Kick-Ass, it’s a new form of humor to kill people and the more creative the better.

If that’s not insane enough for a way to make people laugh, which we didn’t find funny. They took an 11 year old girl and turned her into a killing machine with a sense of humor, like a deranged serial killer as Nicholas Cage’s daughter. Her name is Hit Girl and her role is to murder bad guys to make Daddy happy and that was beyond bad taste, it was sick. Her Dad even shoots her several times while she is wearing a bullet proof vest, so she knows what it feels like to be shot and that of course comes in handy since she gets shot toward the end of the film. We’ll probably hear on the Evening News down the road that some idiot will do the same thing with one of his kids that he accidentally kills and Hollywood Producers and the media will tell us there isn’t any correlation to this movie.  Well, I’ve said enough.

We both thought Kick-Ass was a terrible movie and definitely not worth the price of admission. We should have left and asked for our money back, but now we can save you from wasting your money on this film. Original? Yes. Pathetic? Extremely.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Date Night

Becky and I went to see the movie Date Night last week at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Date Night describes the movie as follows:

“Dragged down by the daily grind, suburbanites Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) try to put the spark back in their marriage by visiting a trendy Manhattan bistro. They get more than they bargained for when a case of mistaken identity hurtles them into an incredible adventure involving corrupt cops, a mob boss and a crazed cab driver…”

The Review
Date Night was a very funny and a really clever movie starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell about a couple who is trying to figure out if they are compatible after being married for a number of years, only to find themselves in a crazy situation. The movie has some great lines and some hilarious situations. If you are in the mood for a great comedy, you’ll like this movie.

Steve Carell is kind of the same goofy character that he always plays, but he’s still really funny. Tina Fey though is the crack-up because you never know what is going to come out of her mouth. Date Night is a great movie for a date night or even a first date for that matter. It’s light-hearted and a bit crude at times, but it’s better than some of the other films that we’ve seen lately. Mark Wahlberg is also in this film and he doesn’t say much, but the women in the theater definitely liked his character, along with his clothes or lack thereof.

We both thought it was worth the price of admission at the box office for this one and we were not disappointed.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Clash of the Titans

I went to see the movie Clash of the Titans last week at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO with Conroy and Corban. The Yahoo movie website at Clash of the Titans describes the movie as follows:

“The ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus is helpless to save his family from Hades, vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny…”

The Review
Clash of the Titans was much like Percy Jackson & the Olympians, since it was the same story of a demi god, who this time is the son of Zeus. Clash of the Titans is much better with crazy special effects, but it’s not designed as a children’s movie.

We didn’t see it in 3D and from what I’ve heard from people who saw it in 3D, they didn’t like it and thought it was lame. I think this is one of the reasons why it’s not doing that well in the movie review department. The three of us liked it though and thought it was a pretty fun film. It’s somewhat violent as you might expect for a movie about Greek Gods and ancient warriors.

In the end, we liked this movie and thought it was worth the price of admission. It’s a little corny, but it’s wild.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of How to Train Your Dragon

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie How to Train Your Dragon on opening week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at How To Train Your Dragon describes the movie as follows:

“Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, this action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view…”

The Review
How to Train Your Dragon is a new animated film about a young Viking who is trying to figure out why he’s such a misfit in his tribe. He discovers that he’s not a dragon killer like his Father, but different in his approach toward dragons.

This movie is awesome! The animation is great, the story is fantastic and very funny. The characters are super cool, the dragons are really neat and very well done, each with different powers. By the time you leave this movie you’re going to want to have your own pet dragon.

All of us really loved this movie and it’s done extremely well. It’s just such a fun story and we didn’t even see it in 3D, so it’s probably over the top in 3D. This is one you can see at the box office, especially if you have children and you won’t be disappointed.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Becky and I took the kids to see the new movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid on opening week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO, a couple weeks ago. The Fandango website at Diary of a Wimpy Kid describes the movie as follows:

“Hapless preteen Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) endures bullies, swirlies, morons, and wedgies while navigating the treacherous world of middle school and recording his traumas in his personal journal in this family-oriented comedy inspired by author Jeff Kinney’s best-selling series of illustrated novels. Try as he might, Greg just can’t understand who thought it was a good idea to place kids who haven’t even hit their first growth spurt in the same school as kids who get a five-o’clock shadow by lunch time…”

The Review
Diary of a Wimpy Kid like Alice In Wonderland is based on a children’s book, but in this case it’s a modern book series about a child who is Middle School surrounded by “morons”. Our son Corban has read all of the books and he couldn’t wait to see this movie. Bianca and Conroy each read one of the books and I had read about half of one of the books with Corban, so I knew what was going on with the film.

The film is fun and funny at times, but it also moves kind of slow at times. It’s definitely a children’s movie and many of the jokes are directed toward being a 4th to 6th grader, but there are also lessons to be learned about throwing your friends under the bus. The story is a little disturbing at times as you watch the young boy make some very bad decisions, but in the end there is a redeeming lesson to be learned about friendship.

I liked it, but I would probably wait for the rental. Corban loved it, Bianca liked it, Becky thought it was okay and Conroy didn’t think it was that great.
