John & Becky’s Movie Review of Henry Poole Is Here

Henry PooleBecky and I went to see Henry Poole Is Here on Saturday night at the Century theaters in Belmar, up in Lakewood, CO. The theater was nice, but their concessions are really lame since you have to do everything self serve and it takes forever, so I wouldn’t recommend that theater. The MSN movie website at Henry Poole Is Here describes the movie as follows:

“Given a grim diagnosis during a routine doctor’s checkup, a man who once had it all finds his attempt to disappear into a working class suburb and spend his remaining days subsisting on vodka and junk food hopelessly disrupted when he falls for the beautiful divorcee next door and a busybody neighbor notices a miraculous stain on his stucco wall. Henry Poole (Luke Wilson) had a comfortable life and a beautiful fiancée. But just when it seemed that the future couldn’t look any brighter for Henry, …”

The Review
Henry Poole Is Here is a strange film starring Luke Wilson that moves rather slow and certainly wasn’t a big fan of the critics since it is a story about how faith in God can motivate you to go beyond your comfort zone. Don’t listen to the mainstream critics on this one though because they wouldn’t know a good movie anymore if they were asked to star in one. It’s released in limited markets, so you might not get to catch this film until it hits the rental rack, but I thought it was a really good movie.

Goblin Network AdIt’s a bit wacky in its theology, but it really makes you think about how many times we judge things we don’t understand rather than reaching out, having faith and seeing God move on our behalf.

Henry Poole reminded me of the story of Naman in the Bible. God healed Naaman’s leprosy by having him bathe in the Jordan river 7 times, but not before Naaman was ticked about the whole ordeal. Check out this Biblical story and think about it when you see this movie…

10Elisha sent a messenger to him (Naaman), saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean.” 11But Naaman was furious and went away and said, “Behold, I thought, ‘He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.’ 12″Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. 13Then his servants came near and spoke to him and said, “My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and he was clean. 2 KINGS 5:10-14

When you see Henry Poole, you will see the modern day version of this story with a guy who is terminally ill, but refuses to be healed. I thought it was a great flick.

Becky and I disagreed though. I would say it was Worth The Trip, but she didn’t like it that much and thought it was a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The House Bunny

The House BunnyBecky and I went to see The House Bunny tonight with her Mom Betty at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at The House Bunny

describes the movie as follows:

“When Playboy playmate Shelley (Anna Faris) is unceremoniously evicted from Hugh Hefner’s lavish mansion in order to make room for some younger beauties, her quest for employment finds her serving as den mother to an unpopular L.A. sorority in this Happy Madison production directed by Fred Wolf. Colin Hanks, Rumer Willis, Katharine McPhee, Monet Mazur, and Beverly D’Angelo co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide”

The Review Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood move
The House Bunny is a comedy with a few good laughs. It reminded me of Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon, only without as much substance. Anna Faris makes this film, the same way that Reese did in Legally Blonde, but it’s a tough movie to carry. I liked it much more than Becky and her Mom did.

Goblin Network AdThe House Bunny has some funny parts and Hugh Hefner and his gals are in the flick a few times. Anna’s character is beautiful and she is such a dumb blonde, it’s unbelievable. One of the best parts of the film is when she meets someone for the first time, she repeats their name like Linda Blair in the Exorcist when she is possessed by a demon and the way she does it is pretty darn funny.

Becky and I disagreed on this film. I think it will be a great rental, but Becky said it wasn’t worth her time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Tropic Thunder

Tropic ThunderBecky and I went to see the new film Tropic Thunder

on Saturday with her Mom Betty at the new digital AMC theaters in Broomfield, CO. The Fandango movie website at Tropic Thunder describes the movie as follows:

“Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), pampered action superstar, sets out for Southeast Asia to take part in the biggest, most-expensive war movie produced. But soon after filming begins, he and his co-stars, Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey), comic Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) and the rest of the crew, must become real soldiers when fighting breaks out in that part of the jungle.”

The Review

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas film

Tropic Thunder is quite possibly the worst movie we have seen this year, beating out Adam Sandler’s stupid movie Don’t Mess With The Zohan. There is nothing good about this film. Trash language, stupid inside jokes if you are an actor, producer or director while ripping on the film industry that they are part of with this stupid movie. We should have gotten our money back.

Goblin Network AdTropic Thunder is like being attacked by a bunch of circus clowns. No doubt this was a clown show, but there was very little funny about it. Unless you have a 6th grade education and think that people farting over and over is funny, or you find vulgarity and bad language hysterical then you will probably find this film worth the price of admission.

Hardly anyone in the packed theater we were in laughed in this movie. There were a few funny scenes, but overall this film was absurd and beyond stupid. Definitely not worth the price of admission and this film wouldn’t even make for a good rental. The word B movie comes to mind with an all-star cast of morons. Robert Downey Jr. was the only guy in this film who at least tried to make it entertaining.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Clone WarsBecky and I took the kids to see the new film Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Friday at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango movie website at Star Wars: The Clone Wars describes the movie as follows:

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars showcases an entirely new look and feel to the galaxy far, far away–combining the expansive scope of the Star Wars Saga with state-of-the-art computer-generated animation. On the front lines of an intergalactic struggle between good and evil, fans young and old will join such favorite characters as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala, along with brand-new heroes like Anakin’s padawan learner, Ahsoka. Sinister villains–led by Palpatine, Count Dooku and General Grievous–are poised to rule the galaxy. Stakes are high, and the fate of the Star Wars universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights. Their exploits lead to the action-packed battles and astonishing new revelations that fill Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

The Review
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the latest opportunity for George Lucas to try to keep his Star Wars saga alive with a new animated story about how Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi saved Jaba the Hut’s nephew to gain passage for the Republic through his territory before Anikan became the evil Darth Vader. That pretty much sums up this film.

Although Becky, her Mom Betty, Bianca, Conroy, Corban and I all started out in the theater together, within 10 minutes, Becky, Bianca and Becky’s Mom were gone and went to see Mama Mia. If that tells you anything about this new Star Wars cartoon.

Goblin Network AdIf you are a huge Star Wars fan you will probably really like this, but it probably could have been on The Disney Channel for free or on Saturday Morning with Bug’s Bunny re-runs. I saw the original Star Wars over 25 times when I was a kid when it first came out back in the mid-70’s, so I knew what was going on in this story, but it was still pretty lame. It kept your interest for a while and then became pretty boring. The boys liked it, although Corban got lost with the characters in this never ending soap opera.

If you have nothing better to do with your time Star Wars: The Clone Wars may be a nice show to take the kids on a cold and rainy afternoon, otherwise wait for the rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Man on Wire

Man on WireBecky and I went to see the new film Man on Wire on Friday the Chez Artiste theaters in Denver, CO. The Fandango movie website at Man on Wire describes the movie as follows:

“On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York’s twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released…”

The Review
Man on Wire is an amazing documentary that will make your palms sweat. Just look at the movie poster of the man walking between the World Trade Center towers, a quarter of a mile in the air and you get an idea of what this movie is about – doing something impossible.

Goblin Network AdI heard some people say that they didn’t like this movie and that could be because it’s a documentary and a bit like The Blair Witch Project with the camera footage being a bit scrambled at times. At other times, the camera work is fantastic.

However, if you watch the film and pay attention, Man on Wire is a definite four star movie that you definitely want to see on the big screen. The story is just too incredible, especially given what this man and his team had to do to pull off this unbelievable feat of human acrobatics and ingenuity.

We both thought it was worth seeing and would recommend it. I think I liked it more than Becky did, so I’m going to rate it a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Swing Vote

Swing VoteBecky and I went to see the new Kevin Costner filmSwing Vote last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Rod & Kimberly Tactaquin. The Fandango movie website at Swing Vote describes the movie as follows:

“Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), an apathetic, beer-slinging, lovable loser, is coasting through a life that has passed him by. The one bright spot is his precocious, over-achieving 12-year-old daughter Molly. She takes care of both of them, until one mischievous moment on Election Day, when she accidentally sets off a chain of events which culminates in the election coming down to one vote… her dad’s.”

The Review
Swing Vote Must Love Dogs is a somewhat predictable film once you’ve seen the trailer for the movie. Kevin Costner’s character is a good ol’ boy who likes to drink and have fun, but has zero responsibility when it comes to life and raising his daughter as a single father. He doesn’t believe in the political process and he avoids anything that might require him to be a role model or good citizen.

Goblin Network AdHis daughter on the other hand is well beyond her years and she believes in the political process and the importance of exercising the right to vote. The film takes you into the world of Bud and his daughter Molly, along with two political candidates, one of which is the current Republican President and asks how far politicians will compromise their personal values to win the Oval Office.

We all thought Swing Vote was a great flick. Even if you’re not a politically motivated person or you don’t like Kevin Costner you should like this movie. It is very entertaining and heart wrenching at times as you see some of the challenges facing Americans today as portrayed in this film.

We all liked Swing Vote and thought it was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The Mummy TombBecky and I took the kids to see the new filmThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor this weekend at the Kerasote theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor describes the movie as follows:

“Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents….”

The Review
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is the latest installment of the Mummy series and I honestly didn’t think it could be as bad as the last one, but I was completely wrong. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is in the top 10 for the worst movie of the year. I heard the one of the former cast members refused to be a part of this movie once she read the script and all the other cast members should have followed her lead.

Goblin Network Ad

How bad is this movie? It’s so bad that Conroy looked at me about 45 minutes into the film and said, “Dad, this isn’t even a good rental”. Becky fell asleep, Bianca got up and left about five times to get candy and popcorn and I even left a couple times to make phone calls. We should have told management how bad it was and gotten our money back, but none of us knew really how bad each other disliked it until it was over.
