John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Twilight Saga: New Moon

newmoonBecky and I took the kids to see new movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo website at NewMoon describes the movie as follows:

“Following Bella Swan’s ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world. As the heartbroken Bella sleepwalks through her senior year of high school, numb and alone, she discovers Edward’s image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. Her desire to be with him at any cost leads her to take greater and greater risks…”

The Review
New Moon is a movie that we probably shouldn’t have taken the kids to see because it’s a teenage love story, with some ridiculous characters. We decided to do it since they rented the first one and liked it. New Moon is a continuation of the first installment of the Twilight Saga, only worse than the first one because it moves even slower.

Vampires may move at super human speed, but the movies in the Twilight Saga move so slow you’ll start to think you’re dead with Edward before the end of the film. I don’t know, but Becky and I just don’t see the excitement of this “love story”, it’s really pretty lame. This one had more excitement than the first movie since the character Jacob, her friend, discovers he’s a werewolf and in love with her. That at least adds some conflict between the werewolf and the vampire as you wonder which one she’ll choose. She chooses the wrong one by the way, not to wreck the movie for you, but you’ll see what we mean if you go to this flick.

I think if you’re a fan of the books you’ll probably like this movie, but otherwise you’ll probably be really bored as we were. I have a client who’s teenage daughter already saw it three times within 24 hours of it opening and she loved it. I think that’s the target audience for this one.

In fairness though, not everyone agreed with my assessment of this film. Conroy really liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip and so did Bianca. Corban hated it and Becky thought it was a good rental at best.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Old Dogs

olddogsBecky and I took the kids to see the new John Travolta and Robin Williams movie Old Dogs last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO for Thanksgiving. The Yahoo website at Old Dogs describes the movie as follows:

“Two best friends — one unlucky-in-love divorcee and the other a fun-loving bachelor — have their lives turned upside down when they’re unexpectedly charged with the care of 7-year-old twins while on the verge of the biggest business deal of their lives. The not-so-kid-savvy bachelors stumble in their efforts to take care of the twins, leading to one debacle after another, and perhaps to a new-found understanding of what’s really important in life…”

The Review
Old Dogs is another movie that the “Critics” didn’t like at all. Most of them giving it a D for a rating, but once again we have to disagree with their reviews. Old Dogs is a very silly movie and most of it is pretty ridiculous, but it’s funny with plenty of laughs for a family film. Our kids thought it was a riot and John Travolta and Robin Williams characters are a good mix together for this comedy. There are plenty of laughs and they even poke fun at their age.

This is not a movie that you’ll be mentally stimulated by, but that’s not the purpose. You also won’t see some whacko’ running around slicing people up with a chainsaw or some of the other crap that Hollywood puts out as entertainment either. Old Dogs is a clean movie with some good old fashioned humor and some really funny parts like Robin Williams tattoo on his chest is a crackup.

The kids and Becky liked it much more than I did, but I still thought it was entertaining enough to rate it as a really good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Blind Side

blindsideBecky and I took the kids to see the new Sandra Bullock movie The Blind Side last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo website at The Blind Side describes the movie as follows:

“Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher’s presence in the Touhys’ lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle…”

The Review
The Blind Side is one of the best movies of the year, so it’s no wonder that the “Critics” are giving it a C+. The Critics loved that stupid movie Fantastic Mr. Fox, but something with actual substance, a great story, that is true no less, and that doesn’t have a bunch of political overtones with a token gay actor is something they don’t like. Needless to say, most of the Movie Critics are politically motivated idiots and this movie is great!

In fact, we didn’t find one person who saw this movie so far who didn’t absolutely love it. Everyone coming out of the film really enjoyed it and there are plenty of messages in this movie about giving to others, overcoming stereotypes and prejudice, being real and not giving into the common temptations of the world. The film is based on a true story of a family and it’s really quite amazing with a fantastic ending.

I’m not going to go into detail about the film here, but I’m just going to tell you to make sure you see it and you’ll be glad that you did. It’s rated PG-13 by the way and most of the issues went over our kid’s heads. Bianca didn’t like it that much since it was a bit above her 8 year old mentality, so you might want to stick with kids that are a little older or they will be bored. Corban really liked it though.

The Blind Side is definitely getting a Don’t Miss It from us.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Fantastic Mr. Fox

fantasticfoxIt’s Thanksgiving weekend and Becky and I are up in Breckenridge with the kids taking in some great Colorado skiing and snowboarding, but before we came up here we went to see the new cartoon Fantastic Mr. Fox yesterday. We went to the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Fantastic Mr. Fox describes the movie as follows:

“Mr. and Mrs. Fox (Clooney and Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristopherson (Eric Anderson). But after 12 years, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community….”

The Review
Fantastic Mr. Fox can be summed up in one word – “stupid”. I don’t know who the Producers of this film paid off to get such great reviews, but we all sat in the theater wondering if it would ever end. Fortunately, it was only 80 minutes long and when it ended we all looked at each other like we just wasted not just money, but our time. I said, “What the cuss was that?”. By the way, that’s what they say in this movie over and over again.

It’s another weird George Clooney flick, only this time he’s in a cartoon about a goofy fox and his friends. There are some funny parts of the film, it’s totally over the kids head and the movie was really lame.

Don’t waste a dime on this movie, go see A Christmas Carol instead. This is definitely a rental and it’s pretty bad when the kids all rated it a don’t bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Disney’s A Christmas Carol

christmascarolBecky and I went to see the new flick Christmas Carol last week with our three children at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at A Christmas Carol describes the movie as follows:

“Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of an old miser who must face Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help to bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of A Christmas Carol. Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). His dynamic character roles keep the four characters as diverse as being played by four actors…”

The Review
Disney’s A Christmas Carol is an animated movie that is along the lines of Polar Express and other high-end animated films. This is the classic story of Scrooge and it’s done extremely well. In fact, it’s downright amazing! You will forget you’re watching an animated film. Jim Carrey does a fantastic job and this movie will get you into the spirit of Christmas. If you have a Movie Bucks card from Kerasotes you can see it for $5 and it’s definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

We didn’t opt for seeing the 3D version, but I’m sure that’s fantastic. The regular version of the film was great and this classic story by Charles Dickens just never gets old. It’s just a reminder of what’s really important in life and how easy it is to get caught up in the wrong things. Scrooge is just an amazing character and our kids had never seen the movie or read the book, so it was a whole new experience for them. Bianca was the only one that didn’t like it that much, so maybe stick with children who are 9 years old and up.

We would definitely recommend seeing this one for the Christmas Season.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Pirate Radio

theboxBecky and I went to see the new flick Pirate Radio last week at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN Movie website at Pirate Radio describes the movie as follows:

“In mid- to late-’60s Britain, an unusual yet colorful subculture sprang up and thrived as a product of the upswing in British pop music, only to meet its doom within a few short years. Though the BBC functioned as the country’s main source of news and music, its programmers offered very little airtime to rock & roll — which left an overwhelming need unfulfilled. In response, small bands of “pirate”…”

The Review
Pirate Radio is a very different story about the 1960’s than we’ve seen before. So many of the movies that take place in the 60’s are extremely political, not very fun and this was different. There’s a very political issue taking place in the film, as the British government doesn’t like rock and roll music while millions of their citizens have embraced it and the characters in this film are going against the government.

However, it’s really about this group of weirdo’s who live on a ship off the coast of the U.K. and broadcast rock music legally since they are in International waters. The government is trying to figure out how to make it illegal for them to broadcast and the crew on Pirate Radio really doesn’t care, which is what makes it so funny. They just like to listen to their movie and goof off. It’s very clever and done extremely well. You will you get sucked into the lives of these zany characters and understand why they are such a group of misfits, who become more like a family.

Becky and I both found it very funny and I’m not even a Phillip Seymour Hoffman fan, but he does a really good job in Pirate Radio, along with the rest of the cast. However, be forewarned that this film is not for everyone. A few people got up and left because the language is rough, there is plenty of sex, drugs and rock and roll.

It’s an adult movie for sure. It wouldn’t be any good though if there wasn’t sex, drugs and rock and roll because the film takes place in the 60’s and that’s what that rebellious generation was known for. I have plenty of friends who grew up in that time period and some of them are still like the people in this movie, which is one of the reasons it’s so funny.

The movie has good acting, with strange and funny situations and the characters are a riot. I can’t rate it as a Don’t Miss It since there will be some people who will be offended by this film. Many of my Christian friends will be surprised that we liked this movie, but for others it will be Worth The Trip. A friend of mine sent me a text yesterday and wrote, “I saw Pirate Radio and loved it!”. I concur and thought it was a great movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Box

theboxBecky and I went to see the new Cameron Diaz flick, The Box at the Hollywood theater in Colorado Springs, CO last Saturday night. The MSN Movie website at The Box describes the movie as follows:

” Screen siren Cameron Diaz and former X-Man James Marsden star in the supernatural horror picture The Box (2008), directed by Donnie Darko cult fave Richard Kelly. The film’s premise involves a strange and ominous box granted to a young couple by a mysterious stranger (Frank Langella). They are informed that pressing various buttons on the box will grant them riches while killing a person unknown to them in the process. Executive produced by Ted Hamm, the film was adapted by Kelly from Richard Matheson’s…”

The Review
The Box is a very weird Horror film about a woman who makes a decision to push a button and kill someone she doesn’t know and then realizes there are huge consequences for her and husband for their actions. In exchange for pushing the button their family receives one million dollars, but there is always a catch to moral decisions and that’s what this movie is about.

The Box is based on a short story and it reminded me of something you would read in a High School science fiction class. You know the class where the teacher spends a week trying to explain what the heck it was you just read. Yeah, that class is like this movie. Especially, since the guy who did Donny Darko directed this film because he is definitely an abstract thinker, so be prepared to go “Huh?”.

The movie is really a play on the history of Adam and Eve since the Box is a test, much like God telling our ancestors not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. You’ll notice that it’s always women in this movie who push the button with their husband saying, “We probably shouldn’t do it.” with the consequence being severe for both of them. Like Eve eating the forbidden fruit and Adam going along for the ride until it’s too late.

In this case though, it’s not God who is putting the human race to the test, but aliens. More alien space movies from Hollywood – “Yeah.”. The movie is so disjointed you’ll be totally confused, even if you follow along. Many of the characters made absolutely no sense whatsoever. The acting is okay, but the story is really stupid.

Our advice is to wait for the rental or don’t bother on this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Men Who Stare at Goats

menwhostareBecky and I went to see the new George Clooney movie, The Men Who Stare at Goats at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO on Friday. The Fandango website at The Men Who Stare at Goats describes the movie as follows:

“Struggling reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) gets the scoop of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who claims to be from a unit of psychic soldiers who have been reactivated for duty. Intrigued by Cassady’s assertions that they can walk through walls and kill goats by fixed gazes, Wilton follows him on a dangerous, top-secret mission across Iraq to find the brigade’s founder, Bill Django (Jeff Bridges).”

The Review
The Men Who Stare at Goats is another goofy flick by George Clooney. Remember LeatherHeads last year that would have made for a good rental at Red Box, but certainly not one you would want to waste your money seeing at the Box Office. Well, this movie is on the same level. Great acting, plenty of star power, but totally pointless, a few good laughs, and a pretty stupid movie overall.

I did like parts of the film and it was entertaining at times, but for most people they are not going to like this movie very much. You do wonder how much of this film is true, especially if you are into Area 51 conspiracies, remote viewing theories or other late night talk show stories about our government and its other worldly type endeavors. I had seen the Today show report on Barney songs being used to torture Iraqi terrorist prisoners, so that was wild to see in the film.

The movie has some funny parts with Jeff Bridges character being a Hippy trying to create a new Army. There’s a few lines, such as the “Be All You Can Be” Army slogan that will make you laugh, but this movie is just to disjointed and bizarre for most people and won’t be worth the price of admission.

Our advice is to wait for the rental.
