Becky and I went to see Monuments at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO a few weeks back. The Fandango website at Monuments Men describes the movie as follows…
“Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed?…”
The Review: Becky and I were both looking forward to seeing this movie. It is based on a true story that takes place during World War II with Nazi Germany setting out to destroy everything related to Jewish culture. The Americans decide that the artwork needs to be saved and they send in a group of men to get it done, who are known as The Monuments Men. They go into the War Zone and put their lives in grave danger trying to save artwork. It is a controversial mission that they are asked to do.
The movie is not fast paced and it moves very slow. Becky didn’t like it very much because she’s not a big fan of historical movies, but the fact that it moved so slow wasn’t helpful. The acting was good and the story was interesting, but it was really a pretty boring movie. It was an all star cast that kind of went nowhere.
I like history and found the film rather interesting, but it was still too slow for me. I liked it, but I expected it to be much better and I think it’s one of those films that will appeal to a very small audience. It could have been done much better and should have been so much more relevant had they tied it to the impact that the art has made on the world today, instead of just showing what happened.
Becky was definitely a Don’t Bother on this film and I gave it a Rental because I don’t think that most people will want to sit through it.
