Becky and I went to see the new movie Ex-Machina this weekend at the Regal Cinema’s Continental in Englewood, CO. The MovieFone website at Ex-Machina describes the movie as follows…
“Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) a programmer at a huge Internet company, wins a contest that enables him to spend a week at the private estate of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), his firm’s brilliant CEO. When he arrives, Caleb learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined…”
The Review: Becky and I arrived late for this movie, thanks to that app Flixster on our iPhone that said the film started at 7:40, when it really started at 7PM. Fortunately, there was about 20 minutes of Previews and we were able to catch on right away. This is a suspense thriller that asks the question of what will happen with AI (Artificial Intelligence) is able to view people as inferior to them and manipulate them for their own benefit. It brings together two brilliant minds dealing with a robot that has been created as a female that has amazing abilities because of how she was developed using a search engine as her mind.
I don’t want to tell you more about this movie, but I really liked it. I thought it was extremely well done, even if it is a bit boring at times and moves slow with the characters. I think the story is what makes it very well done, along with the directing, the acting and the setting in a remote region with a billionaire recluse. It asks the question of consciousness, but I don’t believe that is what makes us who we are, although that is the question in the film. What makes us who we are is the fact that we are spirit, soul and body and not just soul and spirit. We are a living soul that is different than an animal, but that is a more deeper discussion than what is warranted for a movie review. I still like the way they did the movie and it will make you feel uncomfortable a number of times with a bit of a thriller aspect to it.
Becky didn’t like it as much as I did though and found it to be a bit boring. She thought it was a rental and I thought it was worth the trip.
