Becky and I went to see No Strings Attached last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at No Strings Attached describes the movie as follows:

“‘Lifelong friends Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) take their relationship to the next level by having sex. Afraid of ruining their friendship, the new lovers make a pact to keep things purely physical, with no fighting, no jealousy and no expectations. Emma and Adam pledge to do whatever they want, wherever they want, as long as they do not fall in love. The question then becomes, which one will fall first?”

The Review
No Strings Attached is a movie about two people who have problems with relationships.  They have been in and out of relationships with men and women their entire lives.  All of the relationships they get involved in have been based on sex and are shallow at best.

They come up with plan to use each other for sex, so that they don’t have to continue going out with different people and eventually realize they are falling in love with each other.  The relationship gets complicated from that point on as they try to decide what to do about each other.

The movie has plenty of token gay characters, which they probably needed to get funded by some Hollywood producers, non-stop sex scenes and it’s not a great movie.  It’s somewhat entertaining though and it does show the difficulty of just having a relationship based on sex without getting emotionally involved with the person you’re involved with physically.  It’s really a good rental at best, maybe worth a $5 ticket, unless you are really just wanting to see these two actors naked.

Becky and I went to see Season of the Witch tonight at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO with our two boys Conroy & Corban and our friends Rod & Kimberly. The MovieFone website at Season of the Witch describes the movie as follows:

The Review
Season of the Witch is a movie about a couple of knights who have fought in numerous battles during the Crusades and lived to tell about it.  They become deserters after seeing the mission of “the Church” going in the wrong direction and killing innocent people in the name of God.  A plague has stricken the country and the two of them are commanded to take a young girl to a far away land for trial as a witch in order to end the plague.

The story is definitely different.  It’s not a great movie by any stretch, but it reminded us of Van Helsing, which was kind of “campy”, while being a scary movie at the same time.  It has that same kind of feel.

The movie critics hated this film, but then again they really liked Black Swan that we thought was lame.  I think the critics are being way too hard on this movie.  There are a few parts of the film that will make you jump and we all thought it was a fun movie.

It’s not scary, but the acting wasn’t bad and the story was different and entertaining. The ending is far fetched.  However, think Van Helsing and you’ll get about the same kind of film with different characters and a totally new storyline.

The Review
Country Strong is movie about a country singer who has problems with alcohol addiction and relationship issues with her husband.  She’s disappointed her fans and everyone around her and is trying to decide if she wants to continue performing with all of the demands that come with fame and fortune.

The acting is great, Gwyneth Paltrow did a great job singing and so did the other actors.  Unfortunately, this movie is like watching a country and western song played out on the big screen complete with hitting rock bottom and the depression that many of these songs write about.  It just has way too much drama with the equivalent of sex, drugs and rock & roll that you would find with most typical rock stars.

The flick was just boring and will make for a good rental, but unless you’re really into country music you probably won’t like this film.

The Review
The Fighter is a great true story about a professional fighter who is living in the shadow of his older brother, who is now a washed out former contender and drug addict. The film is amazing and it has plenty of heart about this boxer who is facing tremendous personal challenges while trying to not get sucked into the web of his brother’s destructive lifestyle.

As the story moves on Micky Ward meets a woman and then goes on a mission to become a World Champion prize fighter and break free from his brother and family’s control of his life. The Fighter has plenty of emotion and action. It’s very intense at times as you watch the struggles of the man in dealing with his family and friends.

The acting is great, the characters are entertaining and engaging and this movie should also be up from some Oscar nominations because they are played so well. It’s a great flick and we both loved it! I heard that Mark Wahlberg trained for years to become a boxer in order to play this role. It showed in the film.

Becky and I went to see Black Swan over Christmas week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at Black Swan describes the movie as follows:

The Review
Black Swan is what a buddy of mine and I refer to as, “the lesbian horror flick”. The acting is fantastic and Natalie Portman does a great job in her role as a psychotic ballet dancer.  The movie poster pretty much sums up this movie and what you can expect.

Unfortunately, the story is really lame with way too much filler as the ballerina tries to find her way in the leading role as the white and black swan. The movie has plenty of suspense and a great deal of drama. The characters are rather interesting with sex, drugs and ballet instead of rock and roll. Black Swan comes complete with sexual fantasies by Natalie Portman’s character of her fellow ballet characters and other people in the film. Her Mom is a total lunatic that has helped create this whacky ballerina, along with some other whacko’s in the world of ballet.

The movie has some deep meaning that goes along with the ballet that it’s portraying and that’s why there is so much buzz around this movie, but it didn’t deliver for Becky and I. We both thought it was a rental at best and I thought it was a total waste of time.

The Review
True Grit is a remake of the original John Wayne movie that won him an Oscar and this time Rooster Cogburn is played by Jeff Bridges and the Texas Ranger is played by Matt Damon. This story is Directed by the Coen brothers and it’s based on the book instead of being a remake of the first movie.

The story is great. There isn’t a great deal of action, as you might expect for a name like True Grit. It’s still very exciting though and is a classic Western with plenty of details about the Wild West. One of the neat things about this movie is the language. They apparently hadn’t discovered apostrophe’s yet, so instead of saying “don’t” the characters say “do not”. It’s more of a character story than anything else, about three people and how they came to be together in a manhunt.

The acting in this movie is superb. I’ll be surprised if there are not Oscar nominations again for this movie for best actor, best supporting actor and for best picture. All of the actors and actresses in this movie played their parts way too well. They were amazing and definitely made the movie worth seeing for sure. The story is really good and even though it’s a remake it’s different and worth seeing on the big screen for sure.

The Review
Little Fockers is the third installment of the Gaylord Focker saga that started with movie Meet The Parents. If you liked the first two movies, Meet the Parents and Meet The Fockers, you will like Little Fockers as well. I have to say that we didn’t expect much from this film, but it was very funny.

The story is much like the original film with the conflict between Focker and his Father-In-Law, Jack Burns, played by Robert De Niro. We took the kids and at times it was not appropriate for children at times, but it was funny. Many of the jokes went over our kids heads and it was much funnier than we expected it to be.

All of the characters from the first two films were in this movie and that made it even better than expected. The dynamics between the characters was great. We all liked it and thought it was a good movie.

Becky and I went to see the new film, The King’s Speech this week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Rach, CO. The MovieFone website at The King’s Speech describes the movie as follows:

The Review
The King’s Speech is going to be a classic film for sure and probably win a number of awards this year. It’s extremely well done with fantastic acting and a great true story about the King of England and his two sons who are heirs to his throne.

The story is really amazing. The Duke of York, who is the second born son of the King has a speech problem and cannot speak publicly, or even privately for that matter, without stuttering. The Duke’s wife seeks out a speech therapist to help her husband with his speech problem and she finds a common man who is an expert in his profession, played by Geoffrey Rush. The chemistry between the two characters is great.

The language is rough at times, but it’s appropriate for the situation. The King’s Speech is very entertaining and we really enjoyed it.

Becky and I took the kid’s to see the new film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at The Chronicles of Narnia describes the movie as follows:

The Review
The Chronicles of Narnia series is an interesting fantasy movie. Many Christians love these movies because of the Christian undertones with the lion representing Jesus in this fantasy world and since it was written by C.S. Lewis. It just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t see any difference between magic in these films and the Harry Potter series for example where they battle good and evil.

The original, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was very well done, but the sequels have not been nearly as good. They are entertaining, but I think the characters in the movie are just not very exciting to watch. The story is fun, the special effects are good, but the acting and the directing is pretty lame.

In this installment there are only two main characters in the film with a new child, their cousin that is introduced and they seem to be a bit too clueless throughout the movie. In fairness, our kids enjoyed this last movie and thought it was really exciting and fun to watch. Becky and I found it boring. She almost fell asleep and I was not far behind her. Unless you’re going to bring some children with you, you might want to wait for this one to come out as a rental.

Becky and I took the kid’s to see the new film TRON last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at TRON: Legacy describes the movie as follows:

The Review
TRON: Legacy is a great flick and I have to tell you that I was really skeptical about this movie. I saw the original and I remembered how much I didn’t like the first film, so I had really low expectations for this one.

However, Becky got us a deal on seeing TRON: Legacy IMAX 3D through an Internet website where it ended up costing us about $25 to take all five of us to the big screen and the screen is huge. This was our first experience in going to the IMAX and seeing a film in 3D on that monster screen. The night before we were cracking up about the line to get into see this movie, but after seeing it we were impressed. We definitely picked a great flick for the IMAX 3D version and we have to recommend it.

We all really enjoyed the movie and the special effects, except for Becky who thought it was a Rental. It was just a bit too much science fiction for her. I think Becky got the tickets on some Deal of the Day online, so I’m not sure if you can duplicate that option, otherwise it’s about $16.50 to see it at primetime rates. Great flick though, so make sure you catch it this Holiday Season.
