John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Gran Torino

grantorino Becky and I went to see Gran Torino a few weeks ago at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Rotten Tomatos movie website at Gran Torino describes the movie as follows.

“For his fourth directorial feature in the span of two years, Clint Eastwood tells the story of a grizzled Korean War vet’s reluctant friendship with a Hmong teenage boy and his immigrant family. Set in contemporary Detroit, GRAN TORINO tackles the shifting cultural and economic landscape of not only the Motor City, but America as well. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, an unabashed bigot who never heard a racial insult he didn’t love…”

The Review
Gran Torino is Clint Eastwood’s latest flick that deals with a number of social issues. I didn’t know what to expect going into this movie, especially since Clint Eastwood is getting to be a pretty old and I’ve saw a few of his last movies that I didn’t like that much and I was expecting a film like that one he did quite a few years ago, Bridges of Madison County

that was like watching grass grow.

Gran Torino was a surprisingly great movie. There are many parts of this that will bother a number of people, especially if they are overly sensative, but the message and the story is fantastic. The characters are good, Eastwood is great and there is plenty of emotion in this film. Not to mention a very cool classic car and the way Clint Eastwood tied his character’s Gran Torino into the movie, even the name of the film, was quite brilliant.

We haven’t been to a movie in quite a long time where the audience clapped at the end of the movie, but that’s what happened with Gran Torino. Obviously, you’ve seen a good movie when the audience applauds and this movie is going to win some awards at the Oscars.

last week at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango movie website at Hotel For Dogs describes the movie as follows:

“When their new guardians forbid 16-year old Andi (Emma Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Jake T. Austin) to have a pet, Andi has to use her quick wit to help find a new home for their dog, Friday. The resourceful kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and using Bruce’s talents as a mechanical genius, transform it into a magical dog-paradise for Friday – and eventually for all Friday’s friends. When barking dogs make the neighbors suspicious, Andi and Bruce use every invention they have to avoid anyone discovering “who let the dogs in.”

The Review
Hotel For Dogs is a movie that I didn’t see, but our kids and Becky went and saw it, but they all really liked the flick. Bianca said that she really liked it and the characters were great. She said she liked the puppies and thought the story was really good.

Corban said that the movie was really funny and that there were some dogs that just cracked him up.

The bottom line is that our kids really liked it and so did Becky and they all thought it was a great flick.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Revolutionary Road

revolutionaryroad Becky and I went to see the movie Revolutionary Road at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Rod and Kimberly Tactaquin on Friday Night. The Fandango movie website at Revolutionary Road describes the movie as follows:

“Frank and April Wheeler are a young couple trying to find fulfillment in an era of conformity. Trapped in a world of encoded convention, they dream without faith, as lies and self-deceptions build to explosive consequences.”

The Review
Revolutionary Road stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in a movie about a young couple who are trying to find themselves after getting married, having children and not being able to pursue their dreams in the mid 1950’s. It’s one big “pity party” from start to finish with great acting and a very terrible storyline.

Kate Winslet is great in this movie and will probably win an Academy Award for her role in this movie, but so was DiCaprio. They both played their parts extremely well, but the problem with Revolutionary Road is that as Rod put it, “It’s a movie about being disconnected” and I responded with, “Yeah, they did such a great job that they disconnected with the audience and not just each other.”

There isn’t anything good about this flick. You don’t really care about these characters, the characters are a couple of spoiled brats that ignore their kids and are totally self absorbed. This movie has no heart whatsoever, in fact by the end of the film, you scratch your head and realize there was nothing there.

I couldn’t even recommend this as a good rental, but it’s definitely not worth the price of admission. Go and see Defiance instead.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Paul Blart Mall Cop

bedtimestories On Friday, I took the kids to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango movie website at Paul Blart: Mall Cop describes the movie as follows:

“A single, suburban dad tries to make ends meet as a security officer at a New Jersey mall. It’s a job he takes very seriously, though no one else does. When Santa’s helpers at the mall stage a coup, shutting down the megaplex and taking hostages (Paul’s daughter and sweetheart among them), Jersey’s most formidable mall cop will have to become a real cop to save the day.”

The Review
Paul Blart: Mall Cop stars Kevin James who is a hypoglycemic security guard for a shopping mall who wants to be a full-time police officer, but can’t qualify based on his health issues. His character is a determined, overweight “mall cop” who takes his job very seriously. Unfortunately, he’s really not very good at his job. There is a cute woman at the mall that he is very interested in, who is not that impressed with him.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop is pretty entertaining, but although it’s geared toward kids there are quite a few swear words and adult situations for children. Just be aware of that if you’re thinking of taking little kids to the movie. The situations are very silly and thieves robbing the mall are pretty stupid, along with the police. It’s all pretty ridiculous, but that’s the theme of the movie.

Our kids really liked it and all thought it was a great flick. It reminded me quite a bit of Home Alone, only in a shopping mall with an adult security guard taking on bad guys in strange ways instead of a kid. It was funny, but I would have to rate it a rental.

bridewars Becky and I went to see the film Bride Wars the other day in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Rotten Tomatoes website at Bride Wars describes the movie as follows.

The Review

Bride Wars is not going to be Kate Hudson or Anne Hathaway’s crowning achievement for 2009. It’s a girlie flick, but I don’t think most women will like it or be impressed. It’s really ridiculous because these two best friends have their wedding dates fall on the same day at The Plaza and they are too stupid to have a double wedding and instead put their friendship on ice.

Goblin Network Ad There just isn’t much to this movie that isn’t in the movie’s trailer. Although it’s funny at times, it is really more goofy than anything. Bride Wars just didn’t do it for us. It was cute, but not worth the price of admission. The acting is marginal, the story is lame since after about a half hour of watching them battle it out with zany ideas of humiliation, you lose interest in all of these characters.

Our advice on this one is to wait for the rental rack. The star power and interesting title, just can’t pull it off.

John &amp; Becky&#039;s Movie Review Of The Spirit

Becky and I reluctantly went to see the film The Spirit the other night at the Kerasote theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Spirit describes the movie as follows.

“A detective prevents an attempt to release a substance that will leave the citizens of Central City in suspended animation. He is exposed to the goo, which gives him the ability to withstand any beating. He battles crime and a slew of femme fatales…”

The Review
The Spirit is going to go down as one of the worst movies of 2008 and we were tortured to sit through it in 2009. This movie has some really great star power, including Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson and Eva Mendes, but unfortunately it’s written and Directed by a huge hit or miss Director, Frank Miller, who’s on the same level of “buyer beware” as Quentin Tarantino.

Those two Directors are great at getting people into a seat to see a really crummy movie and The Spirit A Life Less Ordinary movie full is no exception. Remember that stupid flick by Tarantino about vampires in Texas or somewhere, I think it was called From Dusk Till Dawn, I tried to put it out of my mind, but it’s on about the same level as that absurd movie.

This movie sucked so bad that the theater should have paid us to sit there and watch it. It was an hour and forty-three minutes of agony that felt like it was 3 hours long! We should have left, but we were amazed that the actors didn’t walk off the set. Did Samuel Jackson need the money or what? I know, tell you how I really feel? Okay, I could have written and Directed a better movie with my kids and our pet cats. I’ve seen better YouTube videos. Shall I continue?

Becky hated The Spirit more than I did and I couldn’t take it. I like comic book characters, but this was a clown show. It definitely will go down as Samuel L. Jackson’s worst movie ever. His character was stupid. Actually, every character in this film was stupid. Although, Eva Mendes and the lead guy Gabriel Macht tried to pull off their characters. All we could figure is that Frank Miller had an alien abduction when he wrote it.

I guess I don’t need to tell you anymore. This is a definite Don’t Bother, it’s not even worth renting on the dollar rack. If they include it with another movie for free – tell them no. It’s that bad.

Becky and I went to see the much talked about film The Reader last night at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Rotten Tomatoes website at The Reader describes the movie as follows.

“Though THE READER may boast the typical pedigree of a Holocaust film–acclaimed actors, a literary source, and an Oscar-baiting end-of-the-year release date–this drama has a significant difference: it focuses on a perpetrator, rather than the victims. Kate Winslet takes on the hefty supporting role of Hanna Schmitz, a woman who has an affair with Michael Berg (German actor David Kross), a 15-year-old boy in 1950s Germany. They spend their brief romance alternately making love and focusing on literature, with Michael reading everything from Chekov to Homer to his lover. Soon, Hanna abruptly disappears, and Michael returns to his normal life….”

The Review
The Reader

is a very provocative movie. Kate Winslet and her your boyfriend are naked and have way too much sex in this film, especially in the first half where for a while you think you’re watching a pornographic movie. However, as the plot thickens and the romance comes to an end the movie turns into an amazing film about post-war Germany, the Holocaust and how life changing decisions were made.

This movie is extremely powerful and was quite shocking. It is one of those movies where you question what each of the people in the film did and if they did the right thing or made terrible choices in their lives. Especially, for Kate Winslet’s character when you step back to think about how young she was in her role during the War.

You definitely have to get past the sex in the first part to enjoy this movie, but if you can make it through and put their relationship in context of the characters ages and what their life experiences were, then this film is incredible.

It’s very moving and has plenty of twists and surprises to keep your interest. We thought it was a great flick with a very strong message about moral decisions.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Doubt

doubtposter Becky and I went to see Doubt last night at the Kerasotes theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Yahoo movie website at Doubt describes the movie as follows.

“It’s 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the school’s strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline…”

The Review
Doubt is a movie we had great expectations for and it started out pretty good. It was actually pretty interesting for a while and then it got really slow. The acting is great in this film and that’s probably why so many people liked it, but the story was boring with a terrible ending.

We are actually surprised how great of reviews this movie has received. Some of you may like it for the acting and if you went to a Catholic school you may relate to some of the characters. I am one of the few people I know who actually got thrown out of a Catholic school in ninth grade back in Minnesota for arguing with a Priest. My parents and I were politely asked to find a different school to attend, so I could totally relate to the characters. Needless to say, I thought I would like this flick more than I did.

The ending is really terrible. Sister Aloysius, who is the main character played by Meryl Streep, sits down on a bench and say’s “I have doubts” to the other Sister who is in the film and that’s pretty much the end of the movie. No major climax, just a question on if she did the right thing and it was all over. I found it to be a complete waste of time, as much as I liked the acting and parts of the story. Becky thought it might make a good rental.

the other day at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango movie website at Bedtime Stories describes the movie as follows:

“Hotel handyman Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) gets an unexpected surprise when he discovers that the tall tales he’s been telling his niece and nephew are somehow coming true. Hoping to take advantage of the mysterious phenomenon, Skeeter spins one outlandish yarn after another, but the children’s unexpected contributions to the stories turn Skeeter’s life upside down.”

The Review
Bedtime Stories Watership Down full movie stars Adam Sandler and Keri Russell who get the job of watching Adam’s niece and nephew while his sister goes in search of a new job. Adam has zero experience with kids, but he does a great job creating plenty of laughs for the audience in this romantic comedy as he spins his tales.

Bedtime Stories was very entertaining. We all enjoyed the film and thought it was great for kids and a really fun family movie, even if you’re not an Adam Sandler fan. Adam’s work is such a hit or miss, especially after Don’t Mess With The Zohan, which we hated, but he delivers in this one and everyone enjoyed it.

Bedtime Stories hasn’t done as well at the Box office as Marley & Me, but we liked it way better. It’s on the same level as Night At The Museum for a great Christmas and New Year’s movie, so you don’t want to miss this one, especially if you have kids. It’s a great flick and worth the price of admission.

John &amp;amp; Becky&amp;#039;s Movie Review Of Marley &amp;amp; Me

marleyandme Becky and I took the kids to see Marley & Me tonight at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango movie website at Marley & Me

describes the movie as follows:

“The Grogans adopt the cute, twelve pound yellow Labrador, who in no time at all, grows into a 100-pound steamroller of unbridled energy that turns the Grogan home into a disaster area.”

The Review
Marley & Me stars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson and is a story about a guy and a girl who get married and buy their first totally unruly dog that grows old with them as they go from being newlyweds to having a family. Unfortunately, the first half of the movie is all about their sex lives and their whacky dog, along with their jobs and whether or not they should have children together at the time. Mr. Grogan is trying to decide if he should have been a reporter instead of a columnist at a newspaper and his dog has helped make his career a success.

The movie probably should have been rated PG-13, but once again the rating system in Hollywood is completely out of whack as we have seen in recent films we’ve been reviewing. Corban was ticked that they kept swearing and as he put it, “the woman kept getting naked in the movie.” Bianca and her friend Meghan, the neighbor girl who is eight years old like Corban, really liked the movie. Conroy leaned over about half way through and said, “Dad, this is a rental and it should have been rated PG-13”.

The movie is pretty good and redeems itself in the second half of the film, but for the most part it was pretty boring and watching the dog be a nuisance for two hours was a bit much. Becky and I both thought it was a rental and out of all of us, Bianca and her friend liked it the most.
