John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Invisible

The Invisible Movie PosterBecky and I went to see The Invisible on Friday night. We went to the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, Colorado and it was teenager mania. The Yahoo website at The Invisible describes the movie as follows:

Nick, is a high school senior with a bright future until, in a tragic case of mistaken identity, he is brutally attacked by a troubled girl, Annie, and his body is left for dead. Now in limbo, not quite dead but invisible to the living, his spirit can only watch as his mother and the police search frantically for him, unaware that he is only hours away from truly perishing.

The Review
The Invisible
has had some really bad reviews, which surprised both Becky and I since we thought it was a pretty cool story. It’s kind of whacky and the ending wasn’t very good, but it kept our interest.

The story is about a young guy who gets killed and his spirit is released from his body as he is dying, but because he hasn’t completely died, and is somewhat of a ghost, he can be saved if he can get someone to find his body before he dies completely.

It was a bit like the movie The Sixth Sense with the whole ghost and out of body experience thing going one, but it wasn’t nearly as suspenseful. I think if you go into the movie with lower expectations than what many of the critics probably had you’ll probably like this flick.

We both liked it and thought it was worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Disturbia

Disturbia PosterBecky and I went to see Disturbia on Saturday night. We went to the Colorado Cinemas in Castle Rock, Colorado and it was pretty packed. The Yahoo website at Disturbia describes the movie as follows:

After his father’s death, Kale becomes sullen, withdrawn, and troubled — so much so that he finds himself under a court-ordered sentence of house arrest. His mother, Julie, works night and day to support herself and her son, only to be met with indifference and lethargy. The walls of his house begin to close in on Kale. He becomes a voyeur as his interests turn outside the windows of his suburban…

The Review
Disturbia
is a really surprisingly good teen flick that delivered as a psychological thriller.  This movie was nuts from the initial car accident at the beginning of the film until the roller coaster ride at the neighbors home at the very end.

Unlike Fracture where you know what has happened and you’re wondering if Anthony Hopkins is going to get away with killing his wife, Disturbia has you wondering what’s going to happen from one scene to the next.  They were both really great movies, but Disturbia reminded us more of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller like Psycho or Rear Window where you were truly on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Disturbia is rated PG-13, but it probably should have been rated R for the violence.  It’s a spooky flick that was done extremely well and we both really enjoyed it. The only problem with teen flicks are the teenagers who show up and play with their cell phones and talk with their friends the entire movie.  You may want to see this one at AMC where they monitor the kids better than at the Colorado Cinemas.

We both liked it and thought it was definitely worth the trip and possibly one not to miss.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Fracture

Fracture PosterBecky and I went to see Fracture on Friday night. We went to the AMC movie theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado and it was pretty packed. The Yahoo website at Fracture describes the movie as follows:

When Ted Crawford discovers that his beautiful younger wife, Jennifer, is having an affair, he plans her murder–the perfect murder. Among the cops arriving at the crime scene is hostage negotiator Detective Rob Nunally, the only officer permitted entry to the house. Surprisingly, Crawford readily admits to shooting his wife, but Nunally is too stunned to pay close attention when he recognizes his…

The Review
Fracture
is a wild and suspenseful thriller with great acting by Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling that definitely will keep your interest until the end of the flick. If you’re a Hopkins fan, you’ll really like him in Fracture as his character is a brilliant psycho that fits his modus operandi based on past films.

The story is pretty good, but the acting, characters, directing and dialogue is what really makes Fracture a winner. Becky and I both like thrillers and this one delivers, even though the story is not that unique. I think I’ve seen episodes of CSI Miami that were more interesting, but the characters in this film are a trip with Hopkins character definitely having anger management issues yet staying in control.

Gosling’s character actually changes his view of the world by taking on this wild case and fighting to get a diabolical murderer behind bars, which was interesting in how that all works out.

We both liked it and thought it was worth a trip to the movies.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Are We Done Yet

Are We Done Yet PosterBecky and I took the kids to see Are We Done Yet last weekend. We went to the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado where you can go to the movies for $5 a person before Noon on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. The Fandango website at Are We Done Yet describes the movie as follows:

“Nick and Suzanne decide to move to the suburbs to create a better life for children Lindsey and Kevin. The contractor they hire to renovate their home has a rather odd way of doing business, complicating the family’s move. Matters spiral further out of control when the contractor clashes with Nick but bonds with Suzanne and the children. A sequel to Are We There Yet?

The Review
Are We Done Yet
was a fun movie for the kids, but it was far to juvenile for adults and pretty stupid on just about every level. Our kids liked it though and that’s why we went to see it, but if you’re trying to to decide between this movie and Firehouse Dog – go see the dog movie.

Unless you’re going to see this one at the dollar theater with the kids we would recommend saving your money and waiting for the rental. Also, we doubt that kids above about 12 years old will enjoy this movie. I didn’t think that I would like it and Becky was skeptical too and this time we were both right.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Firehouse Dog

Firehouse Dog PosterBecky and I took the kids to see Firehouse Dog this weekend. We went to the Colorado Cinemas in Castle Rock, Colorado. The Fandango website at Firehouse Dog describes the movie as follows:

“Rex, world’s most famous stunt dog gets separated from his owner and ends up as the mascot in a hapless San Francisco fire station, where he helps a 12-year-old boy (Josh Hutcherson) and his fire-chief father turn the station into the city’s finest while stopping an evil arsonist.”

The Review
Firehouse Dog
was a great family movie that was fun for the whole family with a fantastic storyline, plenty of action and adventure with a super cast of characters. It’s great for kids of all ages and you’ll like it even if you’re not a dog lover.  Of course dog lovers will really dig this flick.

The movie is pretty silly at times, but it’s very entertaining and we all enjoyed it.  I didn’t think that I would like it and Becky was skeptical too, but we both thought it was definitely worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Meet the Robinsons

Meet the Robinsons PosterBecky and I took the kids and a bunch of Conroy’s friends for his birthday last week to see Meet the Robinsons. We went to the Colorado Cinemas in Castle Rock, Colorado. The Fandango website at Meet the Robinsons describes the movie as follows:

“Lewis is an orphan who dreams of finding a family. His journey takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious stranger named Wilbur Robinson whisks him away to a world where anything is possible: the future. There, he meets an incredible assortment of characters and a family beyond his wildest imagination, The Robinsons, who help lead him on an amazing and hilarious adventure with heartfelt results. Based upon the book A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce.”

The Review
Meet the Robinsons
was a great Walt Disney flick that reminded me a little bit of Jimmy Neutron because of the boy genius, but a totally different character and story of course. The animation is good and the storyline was fun with a good message.

All of the kids liked this movie and there are some really funny parts. The time machine concept was very cool and the dinosaur and evil character were done really well that all the kids liked. Your heart will go out for this little orphan kid and his buddy.

We all agreed that this was worth the trip and the kids definitely said it was a don’t miss it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of TMNT

TMNT PosterBecky and I took the kids to see TMNT on Monday for Conroy’s 9th birthday. We went to the Regal Cinemas in Littleton, Colorado. The Yahoo website at TNMT describes the movie as follows:

After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their rat sensei, Master Splinter, becomes worried when strange things begin to brew in New York City. Tech-industrialist Max Winters is amassing an army of ancient monsters to apparently take over the world. And only one super-ninja fighting team can stop them…

The Review
TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
was originally a comic book series that has a very interesting beginning.  If you’re interested in the history of the TMNT story and how it all began, you should check out this Wikipedia article and read about it.  It’s really pretty cool.

The animation in this movie was fantastic and the story was definitely right out of a comic book.  All the kids really liked this flick and I thought it was good too.  With the exception of having the voice of the old Chinese dude from the movie “The Karate Kid” be the voice behind their sensei, Master Splinter, which didn’t really fit the mutant rat.  I found his character to be a bit annoying.  The other characters were “Kowabunga Dude”.

Becky didn’t like this movie, but was glad that Conroy and our other two enjoyed it.  I thought it was a blast and definitely Worth The Trip, but I like the X-Men and comic book characters, even when they are mutant ninja turtles.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Last Mimzi

The Last MimziBecky and I took the kids to see The Last Mimzi this Sunday, after a crazy day of snowboarding at Loveland ski area. We went to the Colorado Cinemas in Castle Rock, Colorado. The Yahoo website at The Last Mimzi describes the movie as follows:

Two children discover a mysterious box that contains some strange devices they think are toys. As the children play with these “toys,” they begin to display higher and higher intelligence levels. Their teacher tells their parents that they seem to have grown beyond genius. Their parents, too, realize something extraordinary is happening…

The Review
The Last Mimzi
was a very strange flick about a couple kids that find a strange doll that has arrived from the future and grants them supernatural powers. The kids find they have a mission to save the people in the future who are dying from pollution. It’s pretty whacked, but a cute story that has some adventure aspects to it and the acting is very good.

Becky didn’t connect with the movie at all and I thought she was going to fall asleep. I liked it, but wouldn’t spend more than the cost of a movie rental. It’s a kid’s movie though and Conroy who just turned 9 thought that it was Worth The Trip, Corban at age 7 thought it was good too, but Bianca thought it was a Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Premonition

Premonition PosterBecky and I went to see Premonition on Friday night at the AMC movie theater in Highlands Ranch. The Fandango website at Premonition describes the movie as follows:

Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) has an idyllic life, until one day she receives word that her husband (Julian McMahon) has died in an auto accident. However, when Linda wakes up the next morning and finds Jim beside her, she assumes she has just had an unusually vivid dream. Soon she finds out that what she experienced was not a dream, and she must battle time and destiny to save her family.”

The Review
Becky and I were both excited about seeing Premonition since we’re both Sandra Bullock fans and this movie looked really interesting. It was pretty good for a while, but a bit like her last flick Lake House that we thought was a flop with the whole time traveling bit again.

It started to spiral down hill about the middle of the movie and then it got better for a little bit only to let us down with a terrible ending. It’s definitely not a feel good ending by any means and pretty lame. Becky and I both left the theater feeling like it was a total waste of time, along with most of the other people in the theater. However, there were a few people who thought it was great.

I’m giving this one a big don’t bother and Becky said to wait for the rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of 300

300 PosterI went to see 300 on opening night at the AMC movie theater in Highlands Ranch. Becky didn’t want to see this movie and it was a good thing since she would have hated it. The Yahoo website at 300 describes the movie as follows:

In the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.

The Review
300 was like the the movie Gladiator on steroids without as good of a story to go with it. The special effects were pretty amazing and with all the hype surrounding this film, it will probably do $100 million or more at the box office.

300 is definitely a guy flick with all the non-stop violence going on and should cure anyone who wants to see a war film for quite some time. I know it did that for me. It’s loaded with good looking men and women in fantastic shape and it’s based on a supposedly real event that took place, but the history isn’t reality.

However, if you read the Bible you’ll discover that Gideon actually did take on a number of Midianite men that was too many too number with only 300 and actually won the battle, which I think would have been a better story to tell. Of course, that would have really freaked out the Hollywood elite.

Judges 7:7
The LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place.”

By the way, Gideon and his men actually won and defeated the Midianites.

In spite of 300’s graphic violence and gore (heads definitely roll in this film) I liked it. For myself, it reminded me what King David killing a lion and a bear as a boy, in 300 the king kills a giant wolf, and David’s mighty men who killed giants. It’s a brutal film, but we often forget that we live in a very brutal and fallen world and if we don’t think so we need only to look at what is happening in Iraq today.

I thought it was Worth The Trip, but most people probably won’t like it much.

John – *** Worth The Trip
