John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Match Point

MatchPointBecky and I went to see “Match Point” on Friday night. The Fandango website at Match Point describes the movie as follows:

“A former tennis pro falls for a beautiful femme-fatal who is dating his nemesis. To complicate things further, his nemesis also happens to be his future brother-in”

The Review
Becky and I are not fans of Woody Allen movies, but Match Point was very well done. I would say that Woody Allen should have focused more of his career on thriller and suspense films instead of his usual strange drama films. This movie was extremely surprising and with filled with emotional surprises.

It took a long time to develop the characters, but it wasn’t very boring. On the contrary, it kept you wondering what was going to happen to the main character. He has an attitude that he should look out for number one and lacks any true moral fiber. He believes that his purpose in life is to serve himself even if it’s at the expense of other people. It also asks the question about how much luck plays in a person’s life when it comes to success, failure or even getting away with sin.

It’s not a great movie. In fact, some of the people we spoke with who also saw the movie didn’t like it because it the main character was so morally inept, but I thought it was good for that very reason. It really showed the power of the flesh and how people will compromise their integrity and try to get away with just about anything to satisfy their lusts and desires.

Even though I liked the movie and Becky thought it was pretty good too, we would suggest waiting for the rental, unless you’re a big Woody Allen fan.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Nanny McPhee

NannyBecky and I went to see “Nanny McPhee” with the kids. The Yahoo Movies website at Nanny McPhee describes the movie as follows:

“A new nanny enters the household of the recently widowed Mr. Brown and attempts to tame his seven exceedingly ill-behaved children. The children, led by the oldest boy Simon, have managed to drive away 17 previous nannies and are certain that they will have no trouble with this one.”

The Review
Nanny McPhee was a very clean, fun and entertaining film that the kids really liked. When we came home our boy Corban was going around the house saying, “You need Nanny McPhee.”, which was rather cute. The movie focuses on a family that is in chaos after seven children have their Mother pass away. The kids have created an artform of driving away nannies through bad behavior. Their father has made a compromising family decision with a strict relative who is helping support the family.

Nanny McPhee was a very refreshing movie that focused on the importance and challenges of raising a family. Even though it’s set in an earlier time period the same rules and challenges face families today. If you have kids you should take them to see this movie. Emma Thompson and the rest of the cast did a wonderful job on this film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Annapolis

AnnapolisBecky and I went to see “Annapolis” last night. Yahoo Movies website at Annapolis describes the movie as follows:

“A young man from the wrong side of the tracks has his dream come true when he is accepted to the Naval Academy. But once there he is not sure he measures up against the best and the brightest.”

The Review
Annapolis was entertaining and we both enjoyed it. It’s a movie about a guy who’s dream is to become a Naval Officer and wanting to get into the Naval Academy. It turns out to be a movie more about boxing than anything else, which was a bit of a surprise for us. It’s kind of an “Officer and a Gentleman” wanna be, but I wouldn’t look for this film to win any awards from the Academy.

The story was fun with a few plot twists. There are a few parts that were a bit ridiculous, such as when one of the lead character’s in the film has a life threatening fall with very few serious injuries. The girlfriend of the lead character is played by Jordana Brewster and she looked a great deal like a young Demi Moore. The chemistry between the two of them was good and the casting Director is probably feeling good about that.

I didn’t think it was a great movie. I was in the Navy Reserves for six years, so it was too far fetched for me. Becky liked it much more than I did, but we both felt it was a good, clean, feel good movie. Becky liked it enough to recommend that you see it on the big screen and I was tossed between it being a Rental or Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of End Of The Spear

SpearBecky and I went to see “End of the Spear” last night. The Fandango website at End of the Spear describes the movie as follows:

“Mincayani, a tribesman in the Ecuadorean rain forest, lives by a violent code: kill or be killed. His world changes after he and his family kill a group of missionaries. Following the massacre, Mincayani and his family abandon violence and embrace their enemies. When the now-grown son of one of the slain missionaries returns to learn about his father’s death, he becomes part of Mincayani’s family.”

The Review
This was a fantastic movie about an indigenous people in Ecuador and an American man and his family’s mission to set them free from the bondage of violence that was killing them. It is based on a true story and it was very well done.

The story follows a young boy who loses his father in the Amazon jungle when his father is speared by the local tribe that he is trying to reach with the Gospel. His father and his missionary friends could have killed the tribe, but they refused to retaliate. He was a very special man who believed that the people who killed him were more important than his own life. At the same time, the film takes you down the path of the man who speared his father and the everyday challenges that he faced living in the Amazon jungle.

It’s an incredible film about the reality of love and compassion covering a multitude of sins and overcoming evil with good. It’s a very moving film that will pull at your heart strings on many levels. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theater, but don’t let that keep you from seeing this movie. It’s definitely worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Underworld: Evolution

UnderworldBecky and I went to see “Underworld:Evolution” on Friday night. The Fandango website at UnderWorld: Evolution describes the movie as follows:

“Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, the beautiful vampire warrior who fell in love with a Lycan – or werewolf – played by Scott Speedman. Together, they delve into the origin of the ancient feud between their two races. This astonishing tale of ruthless action and forbidden love builds toward a climactic, unavoidable battle where the immortals must face their past – and retribution.”

The Review
We went to see the new Colin Farreil movie, The New World and it was so boring that we left and decided to see Underworld: Evolution. This movie was anything but boring.

I liked the first Underworld and thought that it was a very clever science fiction flick. However, it is extremely violent, but what would you expect from a movie about a war between vampires and werewolves. It’s a crazy flick, but I would liken it to the movie The Matrix where there was a great deal of violence, but a story that went along with the violence. I think this Underworld film was even better than the first.

Becky hated the first one and fell asleep during this one. It was pretty much torture for her to watch this movie, so I definitely owe her one. I’m sure we’ll be seeing something like Last Holiday next. You will either like this movie or hate it. I really liked it and thought it was a wild ride that tied the first film together really well. It’s really pretty clever and nuts.

If you liked the first Underworld, you should like this one. If you didn’t see the first one, you may want to rent it before you go to see Underworld: Evolution.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Glory Road

GloryRoadBecky and I went to see “Casanova” on Friday night. The Fandango website at Glory Road describes the movie as follows:

“Coach Don Haskins leads the first black basketball team to NCAA victory during the 1966 season. Based on a true story, the team was the first all-black team to win the title, and Haskin’s passion and dedication helped change the sport’s history during that racially tumultuous time.”

The Review
The preview for this movie was good and the movie was even better. This was an all around great film that was definitely worth the price of admission. The acting is very good with an incredible story about overcoming prejudice and adversity regardless of the cost.

Becky thought that a person would have to enjoy basketball at some level to really enjoy the film as much as we did. I think you will like it even if you’re not a basketball or sports fan because it’s such a great story. Jon Voight play’s coach Rupp, the Kentucky basketball legend and gives a great performance, not too mention Josh Lucas as the former girls basketball coach turned college hero, Mr. Don Haskins.

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a good movie to see with all the junk that is out there right now, you should go see this film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Casanova

CasanovaBecky and I went to see “Casanova” on Friday night. The Fandango website at Casanova describes the movie as follows:

“ Notorious womanizer Casanova sets his sights on an unattainable prize. With a reputation for charming the opposite sex regardless of their marital status, Casanova discovers a beautiful woman who seems impervious to his charms. As he begins to pursue her, he finds himself falling in love.”

The Review
Becky and I started out in the movie “Grandma’s Boy” and it was so stupid that we left, just in time to see Casanova. We both found this movie to be very entertaining. It’s a bit far fetched and like most period films the people always look too good for the time since they didn’t have indoor plumbing and didn’t bath very frequently.

The characters and the acting were very good. The story is fun, humorous and kind of campy. It had a number of chases and surprises and kept the audience involved in the film.

Becky and I both really liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Rumor Has It

RumorBecky and I went to see “Rumor Has It” last night. The Fandango website at Rumor Has It describes the movie as follows:

“Sarah Huttinger’s (Jennifer Aniston) life is in a tailspin. She’s finally agreed to marry her boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo), but isn’t at all sure that marriage is what she really wants … in fact, she’s not sure what she wants in general. As conflicted as she is about her love life, her professional life isn’t much better – an aspiring journalist, Sarah’s career has stalled at the New York Times obituary column. To top it all off, she’s on her way home to attend her sister’s wedding, which means spending a lot of time with her tennis-obsessed Pasadena family. Somewhat of a black sheep, Sarah’s never quite felt a part of things when it comes to her relatives. But when she meets Internet millionaire Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner), their encounter unexpectedly unlocks some well-kept secrets that may help Sarah uncover the truth about her family and finally discover who she truly is.”

The Review
The Fandango description above is so long that I don’t have to tell you much about the movie. We both thought that Shirley MacLaine’s character was the best one in the film as “grandma”, but the whole film focused on Jennifer Aniston and her decision on whether or not to get married. You kind of had the attitude of “who cares”, get married and get on with your life.

We both thought that the Director spent the majority of his film time focusing on how beautiful Jennifer Aniston was. Constant headshots on her face, her hair and then showing us her body continually without a great deal of real substance to the film or her acting. Her character couldn’t decide if she wanted to get married and thinks she is engaged to the wrong man. It’s funny at times, but pretty silly for the most part. There are skeletons in her family’s closet that were put there by her dead mother who had a fling with Kevin Costner’s character a week before she was married. Not only did her mother have a fling with him, but so did her grandma.

It was another cute romantic comedy that should have been less than half the price of admission. Our suggestion would be to wait for the rental rack where “rumor has it”, it will be showing up very soon.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Fun with Dick and Jane

Fun with DickBecky and I went to see “Fun with Dick and” on Friday night. The Fandango website at Fun with Dick and Jane describes the movie as follows:

“A corporate spokesman and his wife turn to crime to pay their bills after the company he was representing falls in scandal and he loses his job and reputation.”

The Review
This was a cute romantic comedy starring Jim Carrey, Tea Leoni, and Alec Baldwin about the ills of Corporate America and the downsizing that has ruined so many lives over the past few years.

It starts out a bit dark when he loses his job and it takes a while for it to become really funny. There are some funny parts during the initial time that he’s lost his job, but you almost feel guilty laughing because it’s pretty tragic and a reality for millions.

I think it hit home for many people in the audience since so many American’s have friends and family members who have lost pensions, jobs or been a victim of a WorldCom, Enron or other corporate scandal. I really liked Tea Leoni in the film and her character was more believable than Jim Carrey’s who was too stupid, most of the time, to be believable. As expected, every situation was exaggerated to make it more funny.

Becky really liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip and I thought it was good, but would suggest waiting for the Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of King Kong

King KongBecky and I went to see “King Kong” on Sunday night. The Fandango website at King Kong describes the movie as follows:

“A crew of explorers and filmmakers set out to investigate the myths of the legendary creature King Kong. Traveling to Skull Island, they discover a land unaffected by time as Kong lives with dinosaurs that have been hidden and protected from man for centuries. As the crew struggles to survive on the treacherous island, they eventually capture Kong through his fascination with a beautiful woman. Taken back to New York, it may only be a matter of time before Kong escapes his confines.”

The Review
As expected, Peter Jackson who directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy did an awesome job on this remake of the legendary King Kong. It’s a long movie, but it’s really exciting and the special effects are incredible. There was tremendous attention to detail in every aspect of the film. They took God’s name in vain a bit too much for me to want to take my kids to it or buy the DVD, but this was a great blockbuster film that lived up to our expectations.

The acting was really good and the characters were cast perfectly. Jack Black plays a great self absorbing Director who is looking out for number one. Naomi Watts is a beautiful woman who grabs the love and attention of the giant King Kong and Adrien Brody is an unlikey hero who comes to her rescue. There were a few parts of the film that were a bit over the top, but it’s King Kong. It was like Jurasic Park meets a giant gorilla.

Becky thought it was too long and didn’t like it as much as I did, but she still thought it was a good movie. She would recommend it as a rental, so that you don’t have to sit in the theater for three hours and I think that the best place to see this movie is on the big screen with a popcorn, a drink and a large audience of people.
