John & Becky’s Movie Review of Warrior

Becky and I went to see the new movie Warrior this past week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Warrior, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“Two estranged brothers and Mixed Martial Arts fighters confront the forces that tore their family apart as they prepare to do battle in the ring in this drama from director Gavin O’Connor (Pride and Glory). Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) is an ex-Marine from Pittsburgh who’s never quite shaken his troubled past. Upon learning that the purse in an upcoming MMA tournament is the largest in the league’s history, Tommy recruits his father (Nick Nolte), a former coach and recovering alcoholic, to whip him into shape in time for the competition…”

The Review
Warrior is up there with The Debt as one of the better movies we’ve seen this year.  The characters are interesting, the story is very well done and it’s an exciting movie like Rocky.  However, it’s not all about martial arts fighting, but the dynamics between a family in pain from resentment and bitterness.  The movie has a number of plot twists that will keep you interested in the flick with a few surprises.

The amount of hatred that one of the characters has been caring his whole life toward his father and brother has defined who he has become.  It reminded me a bit of the story of Absalom, the son of King David in the Bible who rebelled against his father then King because of decisions David had made that had angered him.  Fortunately, the outcome in this film is better than that of Absalom, but like that story it really shows how unforgiveness can destroy lives.

Nick Nolte is amazing in this movie and should get an award for his portrayal of the father.  The two brothers looked like they could be brothers and it’s wild.

Becky and are are both giving Warrior a “Don’t Miss It”. Be sure and put it on your list, even if you’re not a fan of Mixed Martial Arts, you should really like this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Debt

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Debt on Friday at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark & Maria. The Fandango website at The Debt, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“The espionage thriller begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (Helen Mirren) and Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds). All three have been venerated for decades by their country because of the mission that they undertook back in 1966, when the trio (Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington) tracked down Nazi war criminal Vogel (Jesper Christensen) in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations.”

The Review
The Debt is definitely one of the best films of the year.  The acting is great, the story is really good and the directing is superb.  It’s doing pretty well at the Box Office, but this is a movie that could be up for Best Picture this year because it’s so well done.  The movie is disturbing at times because it deals with a group of young people who are chasing down a murdering Nazi, who is hiding out in the Soviet block to avoid being brought to trial for his crimes.

This movie is really exciting with a number of twists and turns.  I can’t really think of a movie that it’s like, which was what made it so good since it was so unique.  It jumps around from when they are young to old and that made it entertaining.  There is this one part of the film toward the start of the movie that made me jump and it was pretty funny because I actually threw my water in the air and it landed on Becky and I.  I can’t remember the last time I did something like that, which was definitely memorable.

Becky and are are both giving The Debt a “Don’t Miss It”. Mark and Maria like it too and were glad they went to see it.  Be sure and put it on your list.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Help

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Help last week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at The Help, which is a good site to check for show times, describes the movie as follows:

“A 1960s-era Mississippi debutante sends her community into an uproar by conducting a series of probing interviews with the black servants behind some of her community’s most prominent families. Skeeter (Emma Stone) has just graduated from college, and she’s eager to launch her career as a writer. In a moment of inspiration, Skeeter decides to focus her attention on the black female servants who work in her community. Her first subject is Aibileen (Viola Davis), the devoted housekeeper who has been employed by Skeeter’s best friend’s family for years.”

The Review
The Help is definitely a Chic Flick that is going to have more appeal to women than men. When we saw the film, there was a ratio of two to one women to men, but this is a film that should be seen by everyone. It deals with discrimination in the South during the Civil Rights movement, but how it does it is amazing, by looking at racial injustice from the perspective of black Nannies raising white children.

The characters in this movie are great. Emma Stone was perfect for her role as a writer, who took up the cause of the Nannies, even when they were afraid to speak out. Not only does the film deal with the Nannies and their plight, but shows the challenges white men and women faced for speaking the truth. It’s a great film and a must see. I am betting it will win many awards.

Becky and are are both givig The Help a “Don’t Miss It”. Be sure and put it on your list.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of One Day

Becky talked me into seeing the new movie One Day today at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at One Day describes the movie as follows:

“For 20 years, an idealist (Anne Hathaway) and a wealthy playboy (Jim Sturgess) reunite on the 15th day of July.”

The Review
One Day was a movie that I wasn’t sure I wanted to see, but I decided that since it starred Anne Hathaway I would go check it out.  I’m glad I did, I liked it.  It’s definitely an adult show, so teenagers are not going to be too fond of this one.  It’s a serious love story about a couple that should be together, but the guy can’t seem to figure it out for twenty years.

It’s a little boring at times as you go through twenty years of following the two people, but it’s an interesting look at relationships and how people can miss it.  Guys be forewarned, this is definitely a Chic flick and it’s a bit serious at times.  It’s pretty sad, but is a good film.

Becky liked it more than I did, but we both thought it was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Fright Night

Becky and I went to see the new movie Fright Night on Friday night at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Rod & Kimberly. The Fandango website at Fright Night describes the movie as follows:

“Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.”

The Review
Fright Night was an adaptation of the original 1980’s cult classic about a teenage boy who has a vampire move in next store to him.  He watches out his window as the vampire is feeding on his neighbors, but unfortunately the vampire knows that he’s watching him and he doesn’t like it.

This new version of Fright Night is not much of a comedy-horror like the first one.  There are a few jokes here and there, like a comment about the Twilight book series, which was pretty funny, but it’s definitely a horror flick.  It is more like watching a serial killer movie or a smart version of JAWS with a Land Shark and it was spooky at times.  Colin Farrell is great as Jerry the vampire and the other characters and actors are great too.

The language is way worse than the first time around, but the characters and vampires are not anything like the Twilight series.  When these vampires get into the sunlight they explode, like traditional vampire movies and they are not friendly.

I liked this movie and so did Rod & Kimberly, but Becky didn’t like it that much.  If you like vampire movies and are in the mood for a fright night, this is a creepy one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Captain America: The First Avenger

Becky and I went to see the new Marvel comic movie Captain America: The First Avenger on Sunday at the Regal Theater in Lone Tree. The Fandango website at Captain America describes the movie as follows:

“After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals.”

The Review
Captain America: The First Avenger was really well done.  The story is wild and exciting, the characters are great and it’s really a fun film. Becky wasn’t a big fan because she doesn’t really like Super Hero movies too much.  Corban, Bianca and I really liked it, but Conroy wasn’t happy that the film had super advanced weapon technology during World War II.  I thought it was pretty cool because the villain in the movie was a total whack job, a bit like the insane characters found in Hell Boy.

If you’re into comic book movies you should like Captain America, but if you’re not you should probably skip this one.  It will be interesting to see how they do The Avengers film that is coming out in 2012 along with the characters of Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow.  At the end of the credits they have a Preview of the coming Avengers movie for next year.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Friends With Benefits

Becky and I went to see the new romantic comedy Friends With Benefits on Saturday at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch. The Fandango website at Friends With Benefits describes the movie as follows:

“Dylan and Jamie think it’s going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comedies would have them believe. They soon discover, however, that getting physical really does always lead to complications.

The Review
Friends With Benefits is not a very good film.  It’s pretty much the same movie as No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher earlier this year, only with more skin.  A couple of people who are in bad relationships decide that they should just have sex together and not get emotionally attached.

This movie really didn’t have any substance.  They decided to add some dimension to the film with Justin Timberlake’s father suffering from memory loss as he goes through a terminal illness and Mila Kunis character’s Mom is a bit nuts.  It doesn’t really make any sense and it tries to be funny.  They added the token gay guy played by Woody Harrelson to the movie as well to try to get some more laughs.

It has some graphic sex scenes as well, which was a bit annoying.  The bottom line is that we thought it was a rental at best and I thought it was a waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Horrible Bosses

20110710-091316.jpgBecky and I went to see the new comedy Horrible Bosses on Friday at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch with our friends Mark and Maria. The Fandango website at Horrible Bosses describes the movie as follows:

“Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) are workers who would like nothing better than to grind their oppressive employers into the dirt. Quitting their jobs is not an option, so — fueled by alcohol and dubious advice from a criminal (Jamie Foxx) — the men devise a complex and seemingly foolproof plan to permanently rid themselves of their terrible bosses. The problem is, any plan is only as clever as the brains behind it.”

The Review
horrible Bosses Is a crude movie like The Hangover, but like The Hangover it is hilarious. The three main characters played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis are a crackup, as they go on a mission to kill their bosses. This is one of those films where you are laughing at a joke or a situation, while one of the characters are saying or doing something else that is funny.

Their bosses are totally nuts, played by other actors with serious Hollywood star power and that is what makes this film even more funny. There are some crazy situations that they all find themselves in throughout this movie. It ties together at the end in a very whacky way that is really well done.

Be forewarned that the language is very rough and so are some of the situations and things these characters do. Many people may find this movie too over-the-top or offensive like The Hangover, but we all thought it was really funny and well done.

We liked it enough to rate it a Don’t Miss It, if you’re a fan of comedies. I think you will be hard pressed not to laugh. The whole theater we were in was cracking up over this flick.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Becky and I went to see the new Transformers movie today at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch.  The Fandango website at Transformers: Dark of the Moon describes the movie as follows:

“Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) taking his first tenuous steps into adulthood while remaining a reluctant human ally of Optimus Prime. The film centers around the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, suggesting there was a hidden Transformers role in it all that remains one of the planet’s most dangerous secrets. The villain of the third film will be Shockwave.”

The Review
Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the third and hopefully the final installment of the Transformer movies.  It’s has a good story that is different than the other two films with plenty of action and twists to keep the story moving forward and interesting.  The Director went out of his way to explain how the hero lost his gorgeous girlfriend Megan Fox from the previous two movies and replaced her with the underwear model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.  The guy has to be a hero to keep getting these beautiful women on his arm.

Unfortunately, the movie is extremely long, over two and a half hours and we could only take so much of the special effects of cars turning into giant robots to blow things up.  The acting is pretty good in the film, but I have to say the best thing about the movie to me was definitely the cars.

They have some amazing rides in this flick, including the Bumble Bee yellow and black fifth-generation Chevy Camaro.  An autobot turns into a great looking silver Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible.  A stunning red Ferrari 458 Italia that was definitely one of my favorites in the movie.  They also had a Dale Earnhardt, Jr. #88 AMP Energy/National Guard car, a Juan Pablo Montoya #42 Target car and a Jimmie Johnson #48 Lowe’s/Kobalt car, which was totally ridiculous I thought.  A blue Mercedes-Benz W212 was a robot inventor, whose design was supposed to resemble Albert Einstein and again was really goofy.  Finally, they featured a silver Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG that was really great on the big screen.

Becky didn’t like this movie at all and fell asleep several times.  I liked it much better than she did, but it wasn’t fantastic by any stretch.  You may want to wait for the rental, so that you can pause it and watch it over a two day period, unless you’re under 15 years old.  I’m sure our boys will really like it, but they are 11 and 13 years of age.  I thought it was in between a rental and worth the trip, but I’ll give it a rating of Worth The Trip only if you like Sci-Fi and Transformer movies.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Larry Crowne

20110703-104405.jpgBecky and I went to see the new Tom Hanks movie Larry Crowne on Friday night in Castle Rock at the AMC Theater.  The Fandango website at Larry Crowne describes the movie as follows:

“Once well-respected at his company, Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) finds himself on the unemployment line after a wave of corporate downsizing. Drowning in debt and unsure of what to do with his life, Larry enrolls in college, where he becomes part of a community of misfits who are all trying to carve out a better future. The possibility of romance enters the picture when Larry meets Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), an instructor who has lost her passion for both teaching and her marriage.”

The Review
Larry Crowne is a well done film that deals with real life situations that are facing millions of people today. It focuses on a man, Larry Crowne, who loses his job for no rational reason other than he didn’t go to college.

The plot thickens when he goes back to school and meets his new teacher played by Julia Roberts.  She just happens to be unhappily married and going down the path of becoming an alcoholic because her life is miserable.  It makes for some interesting dynamics with a number of different characters that show up in Larry’s life and at times it’s a somewhat serious drama while still light-hearted for the most part.

It’s not a great movie, but it was pretty entertaining for the most part.  It’s between being a good rental and worth the price of admission.  We both leaned toward it being worth the trip because it is very relevant for today and was entertaining.
