John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Big Wedding

thebigweddingBecky and I went to see The Big Wedding  this Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with her Mom and Dad. The Fandango website at The Big Wedding describes the movie as follows…

“A charmingly modern family tries to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future – and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process…”

The Review:  The Big Wedding is the big fiasco that the movie is trying to prevent.  It’s an all-star cast with a terrible script and a ridiculous story that never comes together to make any sense.  The characters are whacky and the film is loaded with just terrible situations that are meant to be funny, but are not entertaining.  The family is totally dysfunctional and that’s supposed to make for a good film, but it was boring to watch and at times painful.

Robert Deniro looks like an old man in this movie and his character is tragic example of a man with a failed marriage and failed relationships with his family.   His ex-wife played by Diane Keaton and his new wife played by Susan Sarandon are good actors, along with other actors in The Big Wedding, but the film has absolutely no substance.  It’s a really lame flick that none of us liked at all or found worth the time invested to watch it.

Becky and I both agreed that this movie wasn’t what we expected and can’t recommend it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of G.I. Joe: Retaliation

GIJoeRetaliationBecky and I went to see G.I. Joe: Retaliation  a couple of weeks ago when it came out at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with Conroy, Corban and Bianca. The MovieFone website at G.I. Joe: Retailiation describes the movie as follows…

“Veteran dance-film director Jon Chu takes a crack at G.I. Joe in this sequel to Stephen Sommers’ blockbuster 2009 film. Dwayne Johnson stars as Roadblock in the sequel, with Channing Tatum returning as Duke, the leader of the Joes, and Ray Park…”

The Review:  G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a sequel to the previous G.I. Joe movie and it was just as bad as the first one.  It’s getting great reviews from the audience, but I have to go with the Critics on this one.  It’s just not a very good movie.  The story is actually pretty good, with the evil empire kidnapping the President and wiping out the “Joes”, but the delivery is not as good as what the G.I. Joe’s pull off in the movie.

The G.I. Joe characters have super human qualities that will make you think you’re watching a Marvel or D.C. Comic movie and it’s just painful to watch.  There are some cool stunts, some great action, but it’s non-stop action that is beyond ridiculous.  Bruce Willis shows up to show that he can use a machine gun and run around on a movie set, but he’s not anymore believable than the rest of these characters.  I guess that’s what we’ve come to expect though from these movies now, which borderline on playing a video game more than watching a movie.

Bianca and her friends liked the movie and thought it was Worth The Trip but keep in mind that she is 12 years old.  I am going to have to recommend you wait for the rental and that was pushing it for me since at times I thought I was watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or who were those other goofballs who dressed up in colored uniforms with their super powers and swords that are appealing to an 8 year old?  Oh yeah, it was The Power Rangers.

The rest of the gang gave it a rating of being a rental as well.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Olympus Has Fallen

OlympusFallenBecky and I went to see Olympus Has Fallen back on Opening Day a few weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark and Maria. The MovieFone website at Olympus Has Fallen describes the movie as follows…

“When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building…”

The Review:  Olympus Has Fallen is the first of several movies where the White House is under attack and a “super hero” type character has to come in and “save the President”.  I figured this movie would be very predictable and I was right, but it was more entertaining than I expected.  The body count is ridiculous!  The story is pretty good since Gerard Butler does a good job playing the character Mike Banning, which is the main character in the film.

Unfortunately, the movie is way too far fetched to be even remotely believable.  There were so many things that had to take place in order for the story to be close to possible that it took away from the shock value of the film.  The President for example tells his underlings to give the Nuclear Launch Codes to the terrorists to save their lives, which would never happen, even under President Obama.  Morgan Freeman was just kind of hanging out in this  movie.  I couldn’t figure out what he was doing there other than drinking coffee and showing up for his star power.  When he gets his honorary award someday at The Academy Awards, it will be one more movie that he was in ordering a cup of coffee.

There are a number of things that took place in the film that made you think you were watching an action film from the early 1990’s.  Nevertheless, it was still rather entertaining.  We didn’t dislike the movie, but we didn’t think it was worth seeing on the big screen since it was far fetched and too predictable.

We would have to say this one is a good rental for a snow day, when you’re really bored.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Admission

AdmissionBecky and I are a little behind on the movie reviews again, but we went to see Admission with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd a few weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at Admission describes the movie as follows…

“Tina Fey (‘Date Night’, 30 Rock) and Paul Rudd (‘I Love You Man’, ‘Knocked Up’) star in ‘Admission’, the new film directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Weitz (‘About a Boy’), about the surprising detours we encounter on the road to happiness…”

The Review:  We didn’t have huge expectations going into this movie, which is probably why we liked it and thought it was worth the price of admission.  The story is cute and funny at times, but it’s not a full blown comedy as it is classified.  It’s really more of a drama, with some pretty serious parts of the movie as Tina Fey’s character discovers that she may have a son that she didn’t know about from a long time ago.

It’s an interesting story and the characters work very well together.  Paul Rudd and Tina Fey play off each other very well and this movie takes some twists and turns, while making a joke out of the admissions process for an Ivy League school, which in itself was pretty funny.  There are quite a few laughs and we did like the way the movie ended, which was not what we expected.  That’s another reason why we liked the movie because we thought that it was going to be predictable going through the movie and it turned out to be very unpredictable.  One of the reasons why that was entertaining is because the characters in the film are predictable, but it shows that life can always throw you a curve ball.

We both like the movie and thought it was Worth The Trip.  If you miss it at the box office, put it on your rental list as a good lighthearted Comedy / Drama.

John & Becky’s Movie Review The Host

thehostBecky and I took Corban to see the new movie The Host at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO last week. The Fandango website at The Host describes the movie as follows…

“A body-snatching alien takes possession of a young woman who refuses to surrender her mind, and together they seek out the man they both love as writer/director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, In Time) adapts Twilight author Stephenie Meyer‘s New York Times best-seller. The majority of the human race have been possessed by unseen invaders, leaving only small pockets of “wild” humans like Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) scattered throughout the world. Upon being captured by the invaders, Melanie finds her body claimed by Wanderer, a spirit that has been warned of the difficulties that come with claiming a human host. In the process of inhabiting Melanie, Wanderer is deeply affected by her vivid dreams and memories. And when Melanie fights to maintain control of her mind even as Wanderer possesses her body, the sympathetic entity joins her on a journey that will reveal the unfathomable depths of human love and compassion. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi..”

The Review: We had seen pretty much everything at the box office and we decided to go see The Host and invited Corban to go along with us.  Why Corban was willing to go see this film surprised me because he was not a fan of the Twilight series, but we were not fans either.  We figured we would give this movie a chance and see what it was about and went into the film with no real expectations either way.

I’m not going to pull any punches, this movie is absolutely terrible.  You would be better off watching an old episode of Star Trek than this movie.  After the movie, Corban said, “That was the worst movie I’ve seen since The Incredible Mr. Fox.”, which was really funny.  He said, “Even Twilight was better than this movie.”, which was funny too.  Yes, this movie is that bad.

It’s about these friendly aliens, who have taken over the planet by doing an invasion of the body snatchers move and inhabiting the body of the human being after ejecting the soul of the current user, which is why it’s called Host.  It’s basically a remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” all over again, only it’s not a horror story, but a love story.  It’s extremely stupid and painful to watch.  The aliens have made the planet better and do not perform violence, but one alien that is a leader is rebelling and commits violent acts against the humans who are trying to survive.

I can’t add anything more to this movie other than to say that it’s definitely a waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Temptation

temptationBecky and I went to see the new Tyler Perry movie Temptation on Friday night with our friends Mark & Marie at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Temptation describes the movie as follows…

“Acclaimed playwright Tyler Perry explores the hardships of marriage and the benefits of confronting problems in this drama about the stressful union between a hardworking accountant and his loving wife, a harried marriage counselor. Roger Jackson strives to support his family, a group that includes not only his Ivy League-educated wife Judith (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), but his ganja-smoking father Stanley and her Bible-thumping mother TT as well. Meanwhile, Judith doles out thoughtful advice to couples every day, yet remains completely powerless when it comes to addressing the issues surrounding her own troubled marriage. When an old college friend drops by her office, Judith faces her biggest personal challenge to date. Perry previously brought this tale to the big screen with a filmed stage version in 2008. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi…”

The Review: I had zero interest in seeing this movie.  Becky and I had seen the Previews several times and I thought it looked terrible, but our friend Maria wanted to see it, so we went with her and Mark on Friday night.  It was pretty funny because she said to me, “You don’t want to see this do you?” and I said, “No.” and she said, “Too bad because I see all kinds of stupid movies with you and Becky that I don’t want to see.”, which was really funny.  I knew I better shut up and just go because she was right, we see some really bad movies and this couldn’t be as bad as some of the movies we’ve seen this year.

The Critics said this movie wasn’t worth the price of admission, but we have to disagree with them on this one.  The fact is that we all liked it and thought it was worth the price of admission.  It’s very well done and real to life.  Tyler Perry did a great job on this film, except that it does move really slow at times.  It has a good story and message about priorities in life, the struggles people face and the lure of temptation that can destroy people’s lives, especially if they are not careful and give into the temptation. Which unfortunately millions of people often do and it costs them dearly.

The movie had heart and character, but he did throw in the kitchen sink when it came to problems people were facing.  Most of the people in the movie were totally dysfunctional, but that’s probably pretty true in America today, so he wasn’t completely out of touch with reality in that regard.  We thought it was Worth The Trip and if you don’t see it in the theater, it will make for a good rental when it comes out on DVD.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

wonderstoneBecky and I took Corban and Bianca to see the new movie The Incredible Burt Wonderstone at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO last week. The Fandango website at The Incredible Burt Wonderstone describes the movie as follows…

“Down-on-his-luck Las Vegas magician Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) reunites with his old partner Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) to take on hip illusionist Steve Gray (Jim Carrey) in this comedy from prolific television director Don Scardino. Partners for 30 years, illusionists Burt and Anton made the Las Vegas Strip a magical place to be. But lately Burt and Anton’s ticket sales have plummeted right alongside their once-strong partnership, allowing gritty street wizard Steve Gray..”

The Review: This movie is whacky.  It’s one of those films with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey that is just strange, but fun.  The main characters are over the top goofy, but they are funny.  The movie totally makes fun of magicians in the Las Vegas strip entertainment industry, especially the magicians who do crazy tricks like locking themselves in containers for days and doing insane tricks that can cost them their lives.  It’s actually really funny the way they did the movie because of it.  Jim Carrey’s  character is totally nuts.

Becky and I have seen many of these magicians in Vegas and some of them are better than others.  A few of them were obnoxious and fit the characters in this movie.  I think that’s what made it so funny to us, but be forewarned that it’s pretty stupid humor.  There are some parts that are really funny though and some parts are totally ridiculous.

We all liked it and thought it was worth the price of admission, but you have to be in the mood for this type of a movie and the whacky humor otherwise you should wait for the rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Call

thecallBecky and I went to see the new movie The Call at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO last week. The Fandango website at The Call describes the movie as follows…

“An emergency operator receives a desperate call from a kidnapped teen, and races to locate the young victim while facing a terrifying killer from her own past in this thriller from director Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Session 9). Abigail Breslin and Halle Berry star in a film penned by Richard D’Ovidio (Exit Wounds, Thir13en Ghosts). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi..”

The Review: Becky was really excited to see this film and I wasn’t overly thrilled about it.  I didn’t think it looked very good and thought it would be really predictable and the critic reviews were not very good for the movie.

It turned out to be a pretty good thriller that delivered much better than I expected, although it is very disturbing.  The psychopath in this movie made it look way too easy to kidnap a person and kill them, which I didn’t like at all.  When we showed up at the movie, some friends of ours were there seeing the film as well and she’s actually a 911 operator and her husband is a police officer.  That was wild since this movie is about a 911 operator, who gets a call from a girl who has someone break into her house that is a murderer and it’s a crazy film from there on out.

They both liked the movie and thought it was well done and realistic.  That fact of course made it even more disturbing and it is grotesque at times and bone chilling to think that there are people like the killer in this film, who are seriously influenced by the demonic,

Becky and I both thought it delivered on what it promised, but I’m not sure I liked it because of the content, it was very well done.  If you’re in the movie for a psychotic thriller than go see this movie.  I can’t say I would want to watch it a second time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Oz The Great And Powerful

OZ_GreatBecky and I took the kids to see the new movie Oz The Great And Powerful at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO tonight. The Yahoo Movies website at Oz The Great And Powerful describes the movie as follows…

“When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot – fame and fortune are his for the taking – that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting…”

The Review: We were all really looking forward to seeing this movie and figured that it would be like Tim Burton’s epic Alice In Wonderland, but Sam Raimi is no Tim Burton.  This movie wasn’t even close to as good as the original Wizard of Oz that was made back in 1939 before any special effects and color was just invented.

I didn’t believe the reviews from the critics that this movie wasn’t very good, but I do now.  Sam Raimi should have never directed this movie, he sucks as a Director to botch this one as bad as he did.  Come on, did he even watch the original movie?  Totally forgetting to put in the Ruby Red slippers?  That’s like making The Lord of the Rings and forgetting to put in the ring!

They cast the Wicked Witch wrong, Mila Kunis was terrible as the Wicked Witch, sometimes forgetting she was a witch and talking like a Valley Girl and her appearance didn’t even come close to the original witch.  If you put the two of their photos side by side, you’ll ask “How did they miss that?” and her voice was not even close to one of the best witches of all time, “I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too.” is a classic line.  Disney’s only interested in making a buck now and you can see it in this film because the story and inconsistencies in the film made it weak.

The story had far too many holes in it, way too much filler where they could have done so much with the Wizard of Oz had they actually stayed even close to the original story.  It was as if they couldn’t decide, if they were making Alice In Wonderland again and trying to compete with Tim Burton or the Wizard of Oz before Dorothy showed up.  Which I might add, she was in the same tornado as the original Professor Marvel, who turned out to the be Great and Powerful Oz in the original story, so Hollywood botched up a classic with this one.  Did they really think that Wizard of Oz fans wouldn’t notice?  It’s a bit like remaking Star Wars and casting Darth Vader with Brad Pitt, putting him in a business suit like Meet Joe Black and then wondering why people are not excited about your movie.

The special effects were all this movie had going for it, which is fitting since that’s all Oz was doing anyway.  Apparently, Disney and Raimi didn’t want the audience to look behind the curtain either.  The flying monkey’s are now flying baboons and there was very little else that was close to the original of this movie.  It’s at best a good rental, but if you have a choice between watching the original Wizard of Oz and this Disney destruction of a classic, go with the original where you’ll actually see the ruby red slippers, which are an integral part of the story.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Dead Man Down

DeadManDownBecky and I went to see the new movie Dead Man Down at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last night.  The Yahoo Movies website at Dead Man Down describes the movie as follows…

“Two strangers who are irresistibly drawn to one another by their mutual desire for revenge.”

The Review:  Dead Man Down is a very odd film in that it’s such a simple movie with a ton of plot twists, which is probably why I liked it.  It’s simple in that it’s just about these two people who meet each other and are desiring revenge, that’s pretty much the entire premise of the film, which is probably why many of the critics are not liking this movie.  However, it’s because of that simplicity that the movie is such a wild ride.

This woman, played by Noomi Rapace, the chick from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (the first one, not the second one) is living across the balcony in an apartment building from a gangster, played by Colin Farrell and they are going to eventually meet.  They have been watching each other for sometime and are interested in one another.  They both have a problem they need to solve, which involves murder and this creates a number of interesting plot twists and plenty of action.

The movie does move slow at times for an action film, but it has to build up the suspense because of the characters and how they cannot let go of their past.  Which I thought made for an interesting film because it’s a action film, thriller and a love story all rolled into one.  Becky and I both liked this movie and so did our friends Mark and Maria, but be aware that it does move slow at times, it is pretty violent and a little far fetched at times as well.  It is definitely rated R, but we thought it was worth the price of admission.
