John & Becky’s Movie of This Means War

Becky and I took the kids to see This Means War to a sneak preview at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at This Means War describes the movie as follows…

“CIA operatives FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy) are inseparable best friends and partners. Together, their good looks, covert abilities and combat skills rank them among the CIA’s elite, but their longstanding personal and professional bond is put to the test when they meet Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). FDR and Tuck both fall hard for the beautiful blonde, and turn their deadly skills and an array of high-tech gadgetry against one another in an all-out battle for her love…”

The Review
This Means War
was a movie that I thought was going to be stupid based on the previews that we saw at other movies.  I wasn’t looking forward to seeing this movie at all, but it turned out to be pretty funny.  The critics hated this movie, but the fans really liked it.  Our kids liked it and thought it was hilarious, although I have to warn you to exercise caution here because it’s an adult movie with some adult humor and scenes.

Still the characters are good, the acting is well done and the story is pretty funny.  It’s kind of a weird flick in that it’s an action and a comedy rolled into one with the two guys, who are best friends, going after the same pretty girl.  The girl is played by Reese Witherspoon and one of the guy’s she falls for is that dude from Star Trek, Chris Pine and the other is Tom Hardy from that movie Warrior and a few other popular films.

I thought it was a good movie and worth the trip, with quite a few laughs and a story that was very different.  Everyone else said that it’s a Don’t Miss It, so put it on your list of movies to see.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Safe House

Becky and I took went to see Safe House on opening night at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at Safe House describes the movie as follows…

“For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town. A “housekeeper” who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself. When the first and only occupant he’s had proves to be the most dangerous man he’s ever met, Weston readies for duty. Tobin Frost has eluded capture for almost a decade…”

The Review
Safe House
is an exiting movie about a CIA Agent gone wild.  The story is pretty nuts and Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds are great together.  Safe House grabbed us and kept our attention until the very end.  There is non-stop action for the entire duration.

Quite a bit of the movie is unbelievable, but it’s still a great thrill ride.  If you like action movies and thrillers than you’ll dig this movie.  The movie has some surprising twists and turns that are really unexpected, especially the ending.  I can’t say I liked all of the movie since some of the characters end up dead that I didn’t expect.  The ending was pretty cool though.

Overall though, this movie delivered and was what we expected.  We would recommend it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Big Miracle

Becky and I took the kids to see Big Miracle last weekend at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO.  The Fandango website at Big Miracle describes the movie as follows…

“Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she’s also his ex-girlfriend…”

The Review
Big Miracle
is a great film about three gray whales who are trapped in Alaska’s frozen tundra in a wall of ice and they are going to drown unless they can get free from the icy grave.  The movie is based on a true story and it shows the dynamics between a news reporter, his ex-girlfriend who is an advocate for Greenpeace, an oil tycoon, the locals and several other characters.

The story is very good and it shows how people can get things done when they work together.  What’s very interesting is how they have such different political views and ideas on how to save the whales.  It’s probably where the saying, “Save the Whales” came from, but they didn’t say this in the film.

We all really liked this movie and we would recommend seeing it.  It was definitely worth the trip.  Although, we saw the one with sub-titles, so Corban rated it a Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Vow

Becky and I went to see the new chick flick The Vow this weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The MovieFone website at The Vow describes the movie as follows…

“A husband endeavors to win back his new bride’s heart after she loses her memory in a tragic car accident in this romantic drama starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum…”

The Review
The Vow
is a very interesting movie about a couple that was recently married and has a serious car accident that causes the wife to lose her memory.  After the accident she can’t remember who her husband is and she loses a year and a half of her life.  The crazy thing is that this is based on a true story.

The characters in this movie are interesting and the story keeps you attention. It’s a dramatic film with plenty of romance between Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum.  The casting for this movie was really good.  The chemistry between the two main characters was great and the movie is entertaining.

Becky and I really liked this movie.  I think she liked seeing Channing Tatum naked the best.  Kidding aside, this is a good movie with a great story that’s even better because it’s true.  It’s the perfect flick for a date night on Valentine’s Day.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Chronicle

Becky and I took our kids to see the new flick Chronicle today at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The MovieFone website at Chronicle describes the movie as follows…

“There is no description for this film, which should have been the warning to us not to see it…”

The Review

Chronicle has been getting rave reviews by fans and critics alike, where on Rotten Tomatoes it had a really high score as a great flick.  It’s about these three High School kids who stumble upon this whole in the ground, while they are at a party.  They climb down the hole, move down a a cavern and discover an alien craft of some type.  After they touch the craft they soon learn that they have amazing telekinesis powers.

One of the teenagers is a very troubled kid, who has been abused at home and everywhere else.  His powers continue to grow and he realizes that he doesn’t have to be abused anymore, but instead he can become the “Apex Predator”.  The movie goes down hill from there.

It’s one of these reality movies where the film is mainly filmed through the crazy kid’s camcorder as he chronicles his life as a super hero, but he’s not a hero – he’s a villain out for revenge.  The movie poster for this film is better than the movie.  In fact, I would probably buy the movie poster, it’s really cool looking.

We all disliked this movie.  Conroy said it was going to be stupid going into it, so I didn’t hear the end of it after the movie.  Becky wanted to get up and leave and Corban and Bianca both were mad that I “made them see it” (Dad of the year).   Okay, so this movie was really bad, so don’t waste your money or your time.  It’s not even a good rental, but is a total waste of time.  Maybe if you’re a comic book fan and you want to see how a hero or a villain can arise, but it’s not worth the time involved in watching it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Man on a Ledge

Becky and I took our two boys Conroy and Corban to see the flick Man on a Ledge last Weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at  Man on a Ledge describes the movie as follows…

“In the heart-pounding thriller ‘Man on a Ledge’, Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) makes a desperate and life-threatening move to prove his innocence after he is framed for the theft of a rare, prized diamond…”

The Review

Man on a Ledge has not done very well at the Box Office since the movie critics apparently didn’t like this film.  However, they liked The Grey that was terrible, so don’t believe the professional movie critics about this movie because it delivers.  Man on a Ledge is a really cool flick about more than just a guy stuck on a ledge.  We went into the movie with very low expectations, but came out totally surprised and really enjoyed it.

It’s about a police officer who has been framed by a powerful guy who runs the city for stealing a rare diamond.  He escapes from prison at the beginning of the movie and the excitement really starts when he goes out on a ledge and brings people from all over the city to see whether or not he’s going to jump to his death.  Everyone knows who he is because it was such a high-profile case, but there are people who want him dead, including some of the police.  There is plenty of action, suspense and excitement with a great story to go along with it.  I don’t want to tell you too much about the movie, but it was a great thriller.

We all liked this movie and I thought it was definitely worth the trip to the theater and three out of four of us rated it as a Don’t Miss It, so if you like action thrillers, you should go check this one out.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of One for the Money

Becky and I went to see the new flick One for the Money this Weekend at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at  One for the Money describes the movie as follows…

“Katherine Heigl brings Stephanie Plum — the popular heroine of Janet Evanovich’s worldwide best-selling seventeen-book mystery series — to vibrant life in Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment’s ‘One For the Money’.

A proud, born-and-bred Jersey girl, Stephanie Plum’s got plenty of attitude, even if she’s been out of work for the last six months and just lost her car to a debt collector. Desperate for some fast cash, Stephanie turns to her last resort: convincing her sleazy cousin to give her a job at his bail bonding company…as a recovery agent…”

The Review
One for the Money is a classic chic’ flick that has Katherine Heigl as the main character.  She is also the Executive Producer of the film.  It’s not realistic, but it’s not supposed to be either.  It’s a romantic comedy and it’s pretty funny, but it has this action element to it that makes the film disjointed and silly at times.  It still works though.  Becky didn’t like this movie very much, she thought it was kind of boring.

I liked the movie more than she did and we took our daughter Bianca with us and she liked it too, but it was too adult for her.  It’s not going to win any awards, but it’s a cute film and entertaining.  The critics didn’t like this movie, so Becky was along with the movie critics this time around.  One problem with the movie was that Katherine Heigl wasn’t very good with her New Jersey accent.

Becky didn’t like it because she thought it was stupid, cheesy and low budget, so that sums up her review.  I thought it would make a for a good rental, but probably not worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Grey

Becky and I went to see the new movie The Grey this Weekend at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at  The Grey describes the movie as follows…

“Watch Liam Neeson as an unlikely hero who is forced to lead a group of roughneck guys in their fight to survive and return home when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling injuries and merciless weather, the men must escape the icy elements — and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt — before their time runs out.”

The Review
The Grey is a flick where if you’ve seen the trailer for the film, you’ve seen the entire movie.  We went and saw this film with our friends Mark and Maria and three out of the four of us thought this film was terrible.  We were expecting a great movie and it was a dog, which I guess is fitting.

Here’s the movie in a nutshell.  Watch a depressed guy get on an airplane that crashes in the wilderness of Alaska with only seven survivors.  After the plane crash, the audience will spend the remaining two hours watching the seven survivors all die in the wilderness in a variety of ways.  Like that television show 1,000 Ways To Die, only in this film there are 7 ways to die.

This was the best they could come up with for this movie?  The movie poster was the best part of this movie.  I can’t believe Neeson decided to do this film.  It was boring, the animation was a joke, and even the wolves looked like giant puppets.  The Director or the Screen Writers must have sat around and said, “Let’s have one guy die by getting eaten by wolves, then will have another guy fall to his death and another guy drown, and…” it’s really bad.  It reminded me of that low budget film Frozen, where some people get left on a ski lift and freeze to death.

We’re not going to recommend this one even as a good rental.  It’s a waste of time.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Becky and I went to see the new movie Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close today at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO. The Fandango website at  Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close describes the movie as follows…

“Oskar (Thomas Horn), who lost his father (Tom Hanks) in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, is convinced that his dad left a final message for him somewhere in the city. Upon finding a mysterious key in his father’s closet, Oskar sets out in search of the lock it fits. Feeling disconnected from his grieving mother (Sandra Bullock) and driven by a tirelessly active mind, Oskar has a journey of discovery that takes him beyond his loss and leads to a greater understanding of the world.”

The Review
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is one of those movies where you will say “Wow!” too.  Seriously, I was not excited about seeing this film, figuring it was going to be one of those over-rated Hollywood films that they put out about 9-11 for cash and prizes.  In fact, I had to leave the New England Patriots & Baltimore Ravens AFC Championship game to catch this flick at 4pm with Becky because I had made her see Haywire on Friday.  She thought Haywire sucked so bad that I knew I wasn’t getting out of seeing this movie.

This movie did not disappoint.  It’s extremely loud and incredibly “heavy”, so be forewarned.  This movie is an emotional roller coaster.  Part of the reason that it’s such an emotional drain is because you live the horror of the 9-11 tragedy through a family that has gone through it personally with the loss of a husband and father.  The main character is trying to figure out why his Dad had to be taken away from him on that “Worst Day Ever” and bring closure to the tragedy.  His Mom, played by Sandra Bullock, is also trying to cope with her loss, while have a relationship with her son who is devastated.

There is plenty of heartbreak in this movie, but it also have a huge redemptive nature to the film that saves it and it’s really cool how the film brings everything together.  I have to say this is definitely a Don’t Miss It, even if you end up shedding a tear or two, it’s worth the price of admission.  It will certainly bring back memories of the “Worst Day Ever” and make you think about the families who had to deal with their loss of loved ones on that fateful day on 9-11.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Haywire

Becky and I went to see the new movie Haywire this Weekend at the AMC Castle Rock theater. The Fandango website at  Haywire describes the movie as follows…

“Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is a highly trained operative for a government security contractor. Her missions take her to the world’s most dangerous areas. After Mallory successfully frees a hostage journalist, she’s betrayed and left for dead by someone in her own agency. Knowing her survival depends on learning the truth behind the double-cross, Mallory uses her black-ops training to set a trap. But when things go awry, Mallory knows she’ll die unless she can turn the tables on her adversary.”

The Review
Haywire is a strange action flick with an all-star cast, including Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, and Antonio Banderas but it’s not a very good film.  It’s one of those “okay” movies about this woman, played by a less popular actress, who’s this bad-ass assassin and has been betrayed by the company she works for.  She’s now this hot chick on the screen, who changes her hair style as much as her clothes and on a mission to kick some butt and use her mad killer skills to get back at the people who betrayed her.

This is definitely a flick for guys who like action movies and want to look at a great looking woman do her tae-kwon-do moves because there isn’t much more to this movie.  It reminded me a little bit like SALT, with Angelina Jolie, but SALT was a way better movie because it actually had a good plot to go with the movie.  Haywire doesn’t have much substance though and is really disjointed.

Becky thought this movie was stupid and a total waste of time.  I kind of liked it because I’m a guy with testosterone and didn’t really care that the plot was a bit lame.  It was different enough and had enough action to be entertaining.  Even so, it’s more of a rental than a movie to pay the price of admission to go see at the theater, which is kind of crazy with all the big names that were in this movie.
