John & Becky's Movie Review of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

IceAge DinosaursBecky and I took the kids to see Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs today at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs describes the movie as follows:

“After the events of Ice Age: The Meltdown, life begins to change for Manny and his friends: Scrat is still on the hunt to hold onto his beloved acorn, while finding a possible romance in a female sabre-toothed squirrel named Scratte. Manny and Ellie, having since become an item, are expecting a baby, which leaves Manny anxious to ensure that everything is perfect for when his baby arrives. Diego is fed up with being treated like a house-cat and ponders the notion that he is becoming too laid-back…”

The Review
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Bambi psp

picks up with there other two movies left off with the same characters and a few new ones, including some very cool looking dinosaurs. I’m always amazed when I see these cartoons now because the characters are so unbelievably life like. It’s almost like you’re watching real actors and it’s very easy to get lost in the movie. I think this is ever since the movies Shrek and Jimmy Neutron came on the scene and changed everything for the world of cartoons.

Goblin Network AdThe story is pretty good and we didn’t opt for the additional expense of seeing it in 3D, but it was still good without paying for 3D. There are some really funny parts in the film and a few jokes for the adults. The dinosaurs are super cool looking and the main characters are their normal funny selves as they continue to grow their gang of misfits.

Becky and I both think these films are better on the big screen and we both thought it was worth the trip. The kids all loved it. If you go before Noon on Saturday or Sunday at AMC it’s $6 a ticket, so if you’re trying to save a few bucks that’s the way to go.

John & Becky's Movie Review of My Sister's Keeper

mysisterskeeper

Becky and I went to see the new movie My Sister’s Keeper on Friday at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at My Sister’s Keeper describes the movie as follows:

“Conceived as a marrow donor for her gravely ill sister, Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) has undergone countless surgeries and medical procedures in her short life. Though their older daughter’s life has no doubt been prolonged, the unorthodox decision of Anna’s parents has cracked the entire family’s foundation. When Anna sues her parents for emancipation, it sets off a court case that threatens to destroy the family for good…” This Is Spinal Tap move

The Review
My Sister’s Keeper is one of the best films of the year for sure.  Don’t believe the reviews of people who say it wasn’t good because it didn’t follow the book.  It’s not a book, it’s a movie!  Apparently, they don’t know the difference, but you can never make a movie just like a book because your brain is going to view the characters differently.

As a film, this is an extraordinary movie.  It will pull on your heart strings on so many levels and make you think about issues that you haven’t thought about before.  Should we be pro-creating people to save other people’s lives for example and what are the consequences of such decisions?  At what age should children be able to make decisions concerning their own bodies?  How do you deal with a child dying of cancer and other emotional and moral issues are addressed in this touching film.

Goblin Network Ad Equilibrium dvdrip The story is amazing, the characters all have depth and you see life from each of their perspectives.  The acting is great, but this is one of those movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List that you want to see on the Big Screen, but probably not more than once every 10 years. It’s just too emotional.

Some people might disagree with our review, but I don’t think there was a dry eye in the theater on Friday night with people openly sobbing.  A film that can create that kind of emotion is powerful and this is a spectacular movie that we’re definitely going to rate as a Don’t Miss It.

I think I’ve told about ten people since Friday to go and see it, so if you’re reading this you’re going to want to do the same.  If you read the book, you may not like it because you’re going to go in expecting to see the book on the screen and I don’t think you’re going to get that with this movie.  However, if you see it as a movie with a powerful story about life, death and family decisions, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers2I took the kids to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen yesterday at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Fandango website at Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee movie

describes the movie as follows:

“The battle for Earth has ended but the battle for the universe has just begun. After returning to Cybertron, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons, and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots believing that peace was possible finds out that Megatron’s dead body has been stolen from the US Military by Skorpinox and revives him using his own spark. Now Megatron is back seeking revenge and with Starscream and more Decepticon reinforcements on the way, the Autobots with reinforcements of their own, may have more to deal with then meets the eye…”

The Review
Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen is the much anticipated sequel to Michael Bay’s first Transformers flick with Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and the Transformer characters from the first film all back for more fun filled action. This one has much harsher language and is rated PG-13 for brief drug material, intense seq. of sci-fi violence, intense seq. of sci-fi action, crude and sexual material and language. Like Land of the Lost earlier this year, I’m not sure that Michael Bay has a clue anymore when it comes to Directing, especially a kid’s film. Supposedly he said that he’s done with action flicks and wants to do some more serious films and that’s probably a good idea because this movie pretty much sucked.

Goblin Network AdThe story is lame with new evil characters, more running around trying to escape the evil Transformers and plenty of shoot-em up scenes with a few new twists that were on the level of the last Indiana Jones movie. If you saw that disaster, you’ll know what I mean.

There is a new beautiful Terminator type robot that tries to seduce the main character, which made absolutely no sense whatsoever, and apparently she was amazingly powerful, but could be easily destroyed by getting run over by a truck. They haven’t quite evolved to Terminator level yet.

Most of the Transformers this time around are really easy to kill with tanks and high powered weapons that were not in existence a few years ago in the first film. It looked like you could maybe take one out with a pellet gun this time around. There’s an old Transformer who lives in the Smithsonian and you’ll think you’re in the new Night at the Museum for a few scenes.

I didn’t completely hate it like Land of the Lost and neither did the kids, but they didn’t rate it a Don’t Miss It and were hard pressed to say it was Worth The Trip. Keep in mind, our kids are the age where they would actually play with Hasbro’s Transformers, although they would disagree, so I’m not sure who Michael Bay was trying to reach with this one, except maybe his Hollywood buddies.

The best thing about this movie were the cars, especially the Camaro and the Corvette. Now that Government Motors has cost us all billions of dollars to stay around and it looks like Pontiac will be no more, even they were not that exciting to watch and save this movie from extinction. I’m sure this will do extremely well at the box office, but it definitely is at best a rental. You won’t walk out of this one hoping they make a third installment.

John & Becky's Movie Review of My Life In Ruins

lifeinruinsBecky and I went to see the new movie, My Life In Ruins on Sunday at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at My Life In Ruins

 describes the movie as follows:

“Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is a Greek American tour guide, who leads an assorted group of misfit tourists around Greece. Tourists who would rather buy a T-Shirt than learn about history. In an hysterical clash of personalities and cultures, everything seems to go wrong. Until one day when a very special tourist, Irv Gordon (Richard Dreyfuss), shows her how to have fun and take a good look at the last person she’d ever expect to find love with…her quiet and sexy Greek bus driver…”

The Review
My Life In Ruins

stars the woman, Nia Vardalos, from the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but she’s not fat anymore.  She is pretty funny though and in this movie she is in Greece and trying to figure out her life where she falls in love.

This is a cute film and for the most part a really clean cut movie.  I don’t think that it’s a great flick that you should run out and see at the box office, but it will make a good rental.  There are quite a few funny parts in this movie and it’s definitely a chick flick.

Goblin Network Ad

Becky thought it was a rental too, but we both enjoyed it, except for a couple goofball teenagers that sat down by us.  The 17 year old genius started calling his buddies during the movie and this is definitely not a kids movie.  They won’t like it. It’s one to put on your list for a trip to RedBox.

John & Becky's Movie Review Of The Hangover

thehangoverI had to skip going to the Steamboat Marathon this weekend after getting bronchitis this week, so Becky and I escaped to see the new movie, The Hangover

today. The Fandango website at The Hangover describes the movie as follows:

“Two days before his wedding, Doug and three friends drive to Las Vegas for a wild and memorable stag party. In fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can’t remember a thing; nor can they find Doug. With little time to spare , the three hazy pals try to re-trace their steps and find Doug so they can get him back to Los Angeles in time to walk down the aisle…”

The Review
The Hangover is totally hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing from the beginning to the end of the movie. Maybe because I kept thinking, “I know these guys. I grew up with these guys and I work with some of these guys”. Be forewarned, this movie will be offensive to a number of people, especially if you get offended by harsh language. The language is pretty rough at times, it’s definitely Rated R for the language and adult situations. It takes place in Las Vegas, so what do you expect?  Just be prepared when you go into the theater.

Goblin Network AdThe story is a total riot and the casting was perfect for the situations that these guys find themselves in the film. After getting totally wasted and finding themselves passed out in their hotel room they have to try to figure out what has happened to their friend Doug, who is supposed to be getting married in Los Angeles the next day. It was obviously an insane bachelor party gone wild and the chemistry with these guys and their personalities make for a very funny movie.

Becky is probably embarrassed to admit that she liked it too and many people will ask me how I could possibly like this flick, but if you can lighten up, enjoy the ride – it’s a crackup.  I thought it was incredibly funny and I’m sticking to it.

John & Becky's Movie Review Of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

night at museum 2Becky and I took the kids to see Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

on Sunday at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. The Yahoo Movie website at Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian describes the movie as follows:

“Ben Stiller returns to the role of night watchman Larry Daly in this sequel to the 2006 family film NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM. This adventure takes the action to Washington D.C, where things at the Smithsonian aren’t quite as quiet as one might think…”

The Review The Corruptor movie full
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is the new sequel to the first movie with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson and it’s not as good as the first. The story is different with Ben Stiller having a successful career outside of the museum, but the museum is in trouble once again and needs the night guard to come to its rescue.

Goblin Network AdAs the characters unfold in this one, there are new historical faces that we are introduced to, but the story is really disjointed. Too many of the characters from the past know what’s going on in the present, which made no sense. It’s definitely a kids film and our kids thought it was great.

In fact, all three of our kids said this new version was a Don’t Miss It, but Becky and I both thought it was a rental at best. If you’re going to see it, you may want to go to AMC before 12PM on a Saturday or Sunday for their weekend rate of $6 before Noon, so you can save some money. In the end, I think this film was just way too much like the first film and there just wasn’t enough new material to make it worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Terminator Salvation

terminatorsalvationBecky and I went to see the new Terminator movie, Terminator Salvation

this Friday. The Fandango website at Terminator Salvation describes the movie as follows:

“In the fourth installment of the Terminator series, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the eventual leader of mankind’s fight againts the machines. The setting is 2018, focusing on the war between the humans and the computer network Skynet. Anton Yelchin co-stars as soldier Kyle Reese, and Sam Worthington appears as new terminator Marcus Wright…” Toy Story the movie The Corruptor movie download

The Review
Terminator Salvation is the latest installment of the John Connor and Sarah Connor Terminator movies. This one takes place after Judgement Day, kind of like the video game, if you’ve ever played that where the characters are running around shooting the Terminators and trying to stay alive. The film stars Christian Bale as John Connor and he does a great job, but the guy who steals the show is Sam Worthington as a futuristic Terminator from the past, Marcus Wright.

Marcus is a convicted murderer who has been sentenced to death, but is part of a future technology that eventually helped create the Terminators. It’s really goofy and disjointed, but the characters are pretty well done. There is plenty of heart pounding action in this movie, but it’s way more Science Fiction than any of the previous versions and the plot kind of stinks. It had an Escape from New York edge to it, since it’s futuristic and the characters are trying to get away from the bad guys, but are sort of bad guys themselves. It’s an exciting film for sure and most people really liked it.

Goblin Network Ad

Becky didn’t like it at all, she thought it was a waste of time and didn’t like the whole guy from the future, guy from the past, living in the present, father and son element of the flick. I liked the original Terminator film and even the sequels were more interesting than this one because the stories were cool. This one was really boring and the ending was extremely stupid. Apparently, some difficult medical procedures are going to be really easy in the future when people are being attacked by monster technologically advanced super machines.

The film kind of lost me since it was not even close to realistic or believable. Not that the others were, but at least they made an attempt where this one was pure special effects and action. I think it will make for a great rental. The music is really cool and the special effects are fantastic.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Star Trek

star trekBecky and I took the kids to see Star Trekfor date night last night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO. I know, kids on Date Night? What’s up with that? We see so many movies together, as anyone who reads our reviews knows, that we figured we would introduce the kids to Capt. James T. Kirk and the famous Vulcan, Spock. The Fandango

website at Star Trek describes the movie as follows:

“Mission: Impossible III director and Alias creator J.J. Abrams resurrects the classic science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry with this feature film that embraces the rich history of the influential television and film series while also exploring some uncharted territory…” Redemption: A Mile from Hell on dvd

The Review
Star Trek is a Summer Blockbuster that has arrived in the Spring. I’m not a big fan of Star Trek. Although, the original television series was great when I was a kid and Gilligan’s Island wasn’t on, but this movie delivered. I had seen the previous Star Trek’s where goofballs showed up in their costumes and this was nothing like the previous attempts to bring Star Trek to the masses. It has plenty of action!

Goblin Network AdThe story takes place before Capt. James T. Kirk becomes the Captain of the starship Enterprise and you meet all the characters from the original series. This was really cool, similar to how Star Wars went back and introduced how Skywalker became Lord Vader, but way better. There is action, drama, character development and conflict, including Spock struggling with his human emotions from his Mother’s gene pool.

There is also an appearance by the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, that was very well done. It’s cool that Nimoy and William Shatner are still able to pull off parts in films at their ages. They were both born in 1931 and Nimoy has the same birthday, March 26th as our son Conroy, which is funny because I told Conroy he reminds me of Spock. He’s just way to logical. An interesting note by the way, is that Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, so he and Nimoy were born just four days apart…co-incidence?

The cast for this film was perfect with Chris Pine, from Bottle Shock, as Capt. Kirk. He got his butt kicked a couple times, which was believable. You may not recognize Eric Bana as the evil Nero, along with some other actors you’ve seen in other films, but not over the top star power. I think that was a good move for this film, instead of going for major movie stars. It’s one of the things that made the original Star Wars so successful because we hadn’t seen much of Harrison Ford and other cast members at the time.

We went with the Tactaquins and they brought their tribe, so we pretty much filled a row at the theater. We all liked it and Conroy commented that Harry Potter dealt with time travel way better than Star Trek, which I thought was pretty funny. Conroy and Corban were a bit lost in Spock’s attempt to master a black hole, but beyond that it was a great flick. It’s probably too adult for most kids under about 11 years old, since it’s easy to get lost in the characters, so we kind of missed it there.

Becky even liked it though and followed along and she hates these kind of movies, if that tells you anything. I thought it was a great flick and don’t think you should miss it on the big screen. They are even showing it on the IMAX for a few more bucks which could make it even more fun.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of State of Play

state-of-play

Becky and I escaped the Denver Spring snow storm yesterday to see State of Play, at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO yesterday afternooon. The Fandango website at State of Play describes the movie as follows…

“Oscar® winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast in a blistering thriller about a rising congressman and an investigative journalist embroiled in an case of seemingly unrelated, brutal murders. Crowe plays D.C. reporter Cal McCaffrey, whose handsome, unflappable U.S. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is the future of his political party: an honorable appointee who serves as the chairman of a committee overseeing defense spending. All eyes are upon the rising star to be his party’s contender for the upcoming presidential race. Until his research assistant/mistress is brutally murdered and buried secrets come tumbling out…”

The Review Tarzan movie full
Sate of Play is a blockbuster spring thriller that has plenty of star power, with Rachel McAdams, Russell Crow and Ben Affleck.  The story is definitely different and it’s pretty entertaining, while thought provoking.  There is a political conspiracy with a company that is getting paid billions to manage war profiteering, which makes the film believable given what we’ve seen in recent years.

Goblin Network AdState of Play is the complete opposite of a blow up everything, unrealistic flick like Fast & Furious and instead is a thought provoking, edge of your seat thriller that is very well done.  The characters are entertaining, the acting is great and the story is realistic.  Although, it was probably funded by a newspaper because part of the story is about the newspaper being controlled by a media giant and competing with online bloggers.

The bottom line is that State of Play is a great flick that we both enjoyed.  It’s one of the better movies we’ve seen this year for quality of content and entertainment value.  If you’re looking for a blow-up, shoot em’ up type flick go to Fast & Furious because this is not your film, but this is more like a Michael Clayton type film.

We both thought it was worth the price of admission and are rating it as Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Hannah Montana: The Movie

hannah-montanaBecky and I took the kids to see Hannah Montana: The Movie

Georgia Rule on dvd

last week at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Hannah Montana describes the movie as follows:

“Director Peter Chelsom takes the Disney Channel phenom to the big screen in a feature film extravaganza. Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) struggles to juggle school, friends and her secret pop-star persona; when Hannah Montana’s soaring popularity threatens to take over her life – she just might let it. So her father (Billy Ray Cyrus) takes the teen home to Crowley Corners, Tenn., for a dose of reality, kicking off an adventure filled with the kind of fun, laughter and romance even Hannah Montana couldn’t imagine..”

The Review
Hannah Montana: The Movie is a great new movie starring Miley Cyrus and her real life Dad Billy Ray Cyrus.  It’s about her fictitious character Miley Stewart who plays the character Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel and the challenges the young girl faces being a superstar.

Goblin Network AdThe story was great and there is a very good moral message about the importance of family and not getting caught up in fame and fortune.  The movie was very well done and we all enjoyed it and thought it was Worth The Trip.  Bianca of course, is a huge Hannah Montana fan, so she liked it more than any of us, but it was a great family film.

I was surprised that our boys liked it too and it’s very clean cut movie with great music and plenty of fun.
