John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Forbidden Kingdom

The Forbidden KingdomBecky and I took our two boys to see The Forbidden Kingdom at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, Colorado last night. The Fandango website at The Forbidden Kingdom describes the movie as follows:

“Jason (Michael Angarano), an American teenager, is a huge fan of Hong Kong cinema and old kung-fu movies. While browsing in a Chinatown pawn shop, he discovers the stick weapon of an ancient Chinese sage and warrior, the Monkey King. The magic relic transports Jason back in time, where he joins a band of legendary martial-artists on a quest to free the imprisoned man.”

The Review
The Forbidden Kingdom is a great kung-fu movie with a fantastic fantasy story and plenty of action for all ages. The movie was very well done and the characters were super cool. Jet Li and Jackie Chan were great in this film and Jet Li actually played two characters in the film. He plays The Monkey King and The Silent Monk. Jackie Chan plays Old Hop, which was quite a bit like Drunken Master that has been done before, but he did a great job on it.

Bazi AdI like fantasy and kung-fu films, so I really thought this was a cool flick. Becky on the other hand didn’t like it as much as Conroy, Corban and I, but she still thought it was worth the price of admission on the big screen. The characters in this film were really wild with magical powers. Li BingBing was awesome as the white witch and we all hated to see her meet her fate.

There is a moral to the story and the ending was as good as the beginning. If you like fantasy or martial arts films you’ll like this one. Be forewarned that the Previews were for Rated R films, so you may have to watch out for that if you take smaller children to this movie. I’m rating it as a Don’t Miss It since I thought it was awesome.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Nim's Island

Nim's IslandBecky and I took the kids to see Nim’s Island

at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, Colorado last week. The Fandango website at Nim’s Island describes the movie as follows:

“Anything can happen on Nim’s Island, a magical place ruled by a young girl’s imagination. It is an existence that mirrors that of her favorite literary character, Alex Rover – the world’s greatest adventurer. But Alexandra, the author of the Rover books, leads a reclusive life in the big city. When Nim’s father goes missing from their island, a twist of fate brings her together with Alexandra. Now they must draw courage from their fictional hero, Alex Rover, and find strength in one another to conquer Nim’s Island.”

The Review
Nim’s Island is a very fun kids movie about a young girl and her Father living on an uninhabited island and the challenges they face. Jody Foster does a great job as a recluse author who decides to enter one of her own adventures and go to save the young girl when her father goes missing from the island.

Bazi Ad Syngenor This film is done extremely well. It’s a very fun and enjoyable family film that we all enjoyed and would recommend to anyone wanting to a see a clean and fun movie. The story is great, the setting is neat and the acting and directing were very well done.

Even though it’s a film about a little girl both of our boys liked it. We thought it was definitely worth seeing this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of 88 Minutes

88 Minutes PosterBecky and I went to see 88 Minutes at the AMC theaters in Littleton, Colorado last Friday. The Fandango website at 88 Minutes Fifty Pills divx describes the movie as follows:

“Al Pacino stars as Dr. Jack Gramm, a college professor who moonlights as a forensic psychiatrist for the FBI. When Gramm receives a death threat claiming he has only 88 minutes to live, he must use all his skills and training to narrow down the possible suspects, who include a disgruntled student, a jilted former lover, and a serial killer who is already on death row, before his time runs out.”

The Review
88 Minutes was a great flick with Al Pacino. It’s very intense, as you might suspect, since Al’s character is given 88 minutes to live. It’s very graphic as a psychological thriller, murder mystery and of course there are the token Hollywood lesbians in the film, so that we all get a glimpse into the emotional life of challenges facing the lesbian. They could have left that out, but the movie probably wouldn’t have gotten made otherwise.

Bazi Ad Albino Farm buy Looking beyond those shortcomings the movie delivers as a suspense thriller and has plenty of excitement and thrills.

Al Pacino was okay in the film, even though he always over acts for his parts and was way to calm at certain parts of the movie for the crazy things going on in his life. It was a bit hard to believe, pretty far fetched at times, but we still liked it and thought it was worth the trip. It’s going to get mixed reviews, but if you like psycho thrillers you should like this flick.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Street Kings

Street Kings PosterBecky and I went to see Street Kings at the AMC theaters in Littleton, Colorado last Friday. The Fandango website at Street Kings The Court Jester divx

Frankenhooker full

describes the movie as follows:

“Tom Ludlow, a veteran LAPD Vice Detective, sets out on a quest to discover the killers of his former partner, Detective Terrance Washington. Captain Wander’s, Ludlow’s supervisor, duties include keeping him within the confines of the law–and out of the clutches of Internal Affairs Captain Biggs. Ludlow teams up with a young Robbery Homicide Detective to track Washington’s killers through the diverse communities of Los Angeles. Their determination pays off when the two detectives track down Washington’s murderers and confront them in an attempt to bring them to justice.”

The Review
Street Kings was a much better movie than we expected and that might be why we both liked it since we went into the movie with moderate expectations. The movie really delivered and the acting, directing and story was really good. Keanu Reeves was great in this flick and really embraced the part as a good cop in a very bad world who was continually being placed in compromising situations.

Bazi AdForest Whitaker was good in the movie too, but the story saved the day for Street Kings. It was action packed, a bit nuts and makes you wonder if the inner city of Los Angeles is really as crazy as it is portrayed in this film. If it is as nuts as the film portrays then the Governor of California really has his work cut out for him because Los Angeles in this movie is out of control.

In spite of some of the potential holes in the plot, the continual violence and the insanity of some of the characters and situations, Street Kings is a great movie. We both really liked this movie and thought it was worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Ruins

Ruins PosterIt’s hard to believe, but Becky and I went to see The Ruins at the AMC theaters in Littleton, Colorado last week. The Fandango website at The Ruins describes the movie as follows:

“Bright sun, warm waters and sandy beaches beckon countless Americans every year, particularly young adults seeking inexpensive fun. Enter Amy and Stacy, two best friends who bring along their very different boyfriends–focused med student Jeff and free-spirited partier Eric. As the group’s vacation nears its end, they journey into the lush Mexican jungle in hopes of seeing some ancient Mayan ruins. But when they arrive at the magnificent site, an unexpected event drives the frightened travelers to the top of the crumbling stone structure, where they confront hidden deadly horrors and engage in a brutal battle for survival.”

The Review
The Ruins was apparently a really spooky novel that neither of us took the time to read and based on the movie I don’t think we missed much. The movie is much like a horror movie remake of a movie like Jaws only in this case the beast that eats people is a giant plant that lives on top of an ancient Mayan ruin. The moral of the story is beware of where you go on vacation.

Bazi Ad Suburban Girl movies Once one of the cast of characters touches the ruins, the local natives require them to go to the top of the ruins and wait to be eaten by the monster vines living on the ruins. The locals will whack them if they come down off the ruins and the man-eating vines apparently like to tease their prey before they eat them.

The film is pretty strange and it moved really slow, but it’s too disturbing at times, especially when this girl freaks out and starts cutting herself up with a carving knife. It’s extremely graphic and definitely not worth the price of admission. I don’t think it did its job as a horror film since it was just gross. It’s really a demented movie. At best it’s a rental, but more of a waste of time than anything, so if you’re still interested – you might want to read the book.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Leatherheads

Leatherheads PosterBecky and I went to see Leatherheads

Suburban Girl divx

20 Years After movie

at the Kerasotes theaters in Castle Rock, Colorado on Friday. The Fandango website at Leatherheads Waking the Dead rip describes the movie as follows:

“In 1925, Dodge Connolly is a charming, brash football hero who is determined to guide his team from bar brawls to packed stadiums. But after the players lose their sponsor and the entire league faces certain collapse, Dodge convinces a college football star to join his ragtag ranks. The captain hopes his latest move will help the struggling sport finally capture the country’s attention. Welcome to the team Carter Rutherford, America’s favorite son. A golden-boy war hero who single-handedly forced multiple German soldiers to surrender in WWI, Carter has dashing good looks and unparalleled speed on the field. This new champ is almost too good to be true, and Lexie Littleton aims to prove that’s the case. A cub journalist playing in the big leagues, Lexie is a spitfire newswoman who suspects there are holes in Carter’s war story. But while she digs, the two teammates start to become serious off-field rivals for her fickle affections.”

The Review
Leatherheads Black Snake Moan the movie starring George Clooney is a very boring film. It was clean, although hearing the actors take God’s name in vain a dozen times isn’t very enjoyable as a Christian, but beyond that the movie was lame. The scene in the Preview with the big football player who gets told to hit the other players and punches them in the face was already done in “The Longest Yard” with Burt Reynolds, along with a few other football films.

Bazi AdThere wasn’t much in this movie that hasn’t been done before, except watching George Clooney get in a fight with his co-star for what was supposed to be a half-hour on the film without getting a mark on his face. I think that’s part of the problem is that it was too far fetched, at times it was a drama and then a comedy and it just wasn’t done very well. George Clooney’s character at times was extremely smart and at other times I thought I was watching his character from “Oh’ Brother Where Art Thou”.

In fairness to the actors, the acting wasn’t that bad, but the Directing was mediocre and the movie isn’t worth the price of admission, so we would suggest waiting for the rental rack on this one. I can’t say we will rent it and see it for a second time, so it’s good for a one time showing.
