John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Dark Knight Rises

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie The Dark Knight Rises last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Moviefone website at The Dark Knight Rises describes the movie as follows…

“Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise continues with this Warner Bros. release, the third in the series. The story will pick up after the events of The Dark Knight, with Christian Bale returning as the Caped Crusader — this time pitted against the deadly Bane (Tom Hardy) and Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Anne Hathaway). Nolan directs from a script he co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan, working off the story by David Goyer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt co-stars…”

The Review
The Dark Knight Rises
is the final installment of the Batman series that is now clouded in real-life horror, after a madman went to the Midnight showing in the Cinemark 16 theater here in Aurora, Colorado and murdered and injured people in Theater 9.  The absolute senseless killing of innocent people committed by the monster on that evening is unbelievable and we pray that God will have mercy on all the souls and the injured of that night, while helping their families.  If you would like to make a donation to help with the victims medical expenses, please visit GivingFirst.org.

The movie was actually fantastic for the last installment of the Batman trilogy.  There is plenty of action, it’s a bit too violent at times as the villain is diabolical.  I thought it was amazing and extremely well done.  However, it’s very long and you really need to be a Batman fan to like this film.  Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman was great.  Becky thought it was way too long and didn’t like it that much.  Conroy, Corban and Bianca liked it more than Becky, but Becky and Bianca both thought it was a rental.

I thought it was a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Katy Perry: Part Of Me

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie Katy Perry: Part of Me last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Moviefone website at Katy Perry: Part of Me describes the movie as follows…

“Get to know the woman behind the pop icon as singer Katy Perry brings fans behind the scenes of her California Dreams Tour in this colorful, intimate musical documentary…”

The Review
Katy Perry: Part of Me
is a rockumentary about the life of the famous rock star Katy Perry and how she rose to fame, along with showcasing her whirlwind global tour.  It is very revealing about her life and takes you on quite a journey of her life, with her music along the way.

The film shows her challenges in rising to stardom, her failed marriage, her family and growing up in a Pentecostal Christian home.  As a believer in Christ that was painful to watch, since her brother pointed out that her parents were so strict they couldn’t eat Lucky Charms cereal as a kid since luck was not from God.  It’s whacky beliefs like that, which give Christians a bad name and can really mess people up.  Her family life also helped shape her into the woman she came to be.

I didn’t have high expectations for this film, but the movie was actually very well done.  We all liked this movie and thought it was worth the price of admission.  It was interesting to see the struggles she went through before becoming a famous musician and it shows how perseverance can pay off, but if you don’t give yourself a chance or quit you won’t win.

This is definitely a movie that you will want to go check out.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Savages

Becky and I went to see the new movie Savages last week at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Moviefone Website at Savages describes the movie as follows…

“Three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller ‘Savages,’ featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benicio Del Tor, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010.

Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry–raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them…”

The Review
Savages
is a brutal action film about the Mexican Drug Cartel that is probably more true to life than we would all like to believe.  It deals with the issue that even if drugs are legalized, they can still be controlled and influenced by the criminal crime networks since they are willing to steal, kill and destroy to stay in business.

The movie is very graphic, with some very distorted and evil characters.  It reminded me of modern day Scarface with the Mexicans instead of the Columbians.  The blatant disregard for human life was very disturbing, along with the drugs, language, strange sexual content was a bit too much in this movie.  We saw it with our friends Mark and Maria and Mark liked it more than the rest of us.  The story was actually pretty interesting and the acting was good too, but these other elements wrecked the movie for us.

I’m going to have to rate it a Rental, borderline Don’t Bother and Becky definitely thought it was a Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Moonrise Kingdom

Becky, Conroy and I went to see the new movie Moonrise Kingdom last night at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Moviefone Website at Moonrise Kingdom describes the movie as follows…

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents….”

The Review
Moonrise Kingdom
is a quirky movie that we had no idea what was about when we went into the theater.  It was probably good that we didn’t know what it was about or we may not have seen it.  This movie is a trip.  It’s one of the whackiest movies we’ve ever seen.  Conroy said it was the strangest movie he had ever watched, but it was very well done.

The acting in this movie is great and it stars a number of popular actors, including Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Edward Norton.  The story is so bizarre and I don’t want to give it away.  My friend Caren went and saw it before we did and she just said, “It’s quirky and I really liked it” and I’m glad that was about all she said because we had no idea what to expect.  It’s very funny.

We all liked this movie and thought it was Worth The Trip, so put this one on the list, if you’re in the mood for something that is out of the ordinary.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

Becky and Conroy went to see the new movie Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World a couple of weeks at the Hollywood Theaters in Littleton, CO.  The Movie Website at Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World describes the movie as follows…

“Set in a too-near future where time at once stands still and is slipping away forever, the writer/director explores what people will do and how they will feel when humanity’s end is near. A 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge (Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell); the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot. Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while his neighbor Penny (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who hasn’t…”

The Review
Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World
is a movie I thought looked pretty good from the movie trailer, but Becky and Conroy went to see it instead.  They both said it was terrible and not worth seeing.  Becky was really looking forward to seeing this film.  It looked funny, but instead it turned out to be a bummer flick with a very goofy story that she said was depressing.

I guess I made the right move to skip this one, so you may want to do the same.  Conroy and Becky both said that it wasn’t even worth renting, so they really didn’t like it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of People Like Us

Becky and I went to see the new movie People Like Us last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark & Maria.  I know, I’m a little behind on movie reviews ago, but only about a week right now.  I’m catching up.  The Fandango website at People Like Us describes the movie as follows…

“On the day his latest deal collapses, fast-talking salesman Sam (Chris Pine) receives the news that his father has died. Sam reluctantly returns home to settle his father’s estate. In the course of carrying out the man’s last wishes, Sam discovers the existence of a 30-year-old sister named Frankie (Elizabeth Banks) whom he never knew about. As Sam and Frankie get to know each other, Sam must re-examine both his perceptions about his family and his own life choices...”

The Review
People Like Us
is a great flick, plain and simple.  It’s a movie with heart and a great cast of actors and characters, plus it’s based on a true story.  The acting in this film is very good and it takes you on a journey into the life of a family that has struggled with relationships and being real with each other until the father dies and everyone has to come together.

I didn’t have great expectations going into this film, but it turned out to be a great drama.  It’s one of those movies that is a bit of a tear jerker and will pull at your emotions, while also showing the damage that divorce, infidelity, broken relationships and addictions can cause problems for people long term.  Bad decisions in life definitely have consequences, but there is the possibility for redemption and there is no excuse for not being honest and real with people, especially with your family.

We all really liked this film and thought it was Worth The Trip or a Don’t Miss It for sure.  It has a great message about forgiveness and the story is very well done.  If you don’t see it at the box office, you shouldn’t think twice about renting this one – it’s a very good movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I went to see the new movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter about a week ago at the Hollywood Cinemas in Littleton, CO.  The Fandango website at Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter describes the movie as follows…

“As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war – and ultimately to the presidency – he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved...”

The Review
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
is a goofy, graphic and somewhat ridiculous flick that definitely had lots of action and adventure.  It’s definitely not a movie for everyone, since it’s a hybrid between a science fiction, horror and action movie rolled into one that is more like a zombie movie than a vampire movie.  These movies always fail because initially it’s almost impossible to kill a vampire or a zombie and by the end of the film the main character could take them out with a bb gun, but in this case it was his axe.

The story was actually pretty good from the standpoint of a group of age old vampires were feeding on people for their meal ticket and helped bring about the American Civil War to try to take over the United States.  I guess that’s the reason why President Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the main character and the author wanted a catchy title to sell more books, but it kind of wrecked the movie and the story in my opinion.  It was just way too far fetched since the movie was already lacking in the believability department and  had me scratching my head too many times saying, “Okay?”.

I couldn’t talk Becky into seeing this movie with me.  She had zero interest in it at all.  I went with a buddy of mine and he loved it.  I thought it was okay for what it was, so I would have to rate it a Rental at best, if you like horror action movies with somewhat ridiculous plots.
