John & Becky’s Movie Review of World War Z

worldwarZBecky and I went to see World War Z on Sunday at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The MovieFone website at World War Z describes the movie as follows…

”Max Brooks’ epic tome of a fictional time of global war against the undead is brought to life in this Paramount Pictures/Plan B production. Quantum of Solace’s Marc Forster directs from a script by Changeling scribe J. Michael Straczynski along with the writing team of Matthew Michael Carnahan, Damon Lindelof, and Drew Goddard. Brad Pitt stars as a journalist covering the disaster, with Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie, and Bryan Cranston heading up the rest of the cast…”

The Review: World War Z is a zombie movie about the coming destruction of mankind from a runaway virus that is unleashed on the planet.  I thought this movie was going to really suck and I wasn’t very interested in seeing it, even though Brad Pitt usually picks pretty good roles in films.  The movie trailers didn’t do this film any favors and they probably should have just showed the title and not showed any of the film since it looked like a ridiculous zombie movie.

This movie rocked!  I really liked it, Becky liked it even Bianca and her friend liked it.  The boys didn’t go see it with us since Conroy was out of town and Corban thought it looked stupid, but he missed out on this film.  It doesn’t take a long time to get into the film, almost immediately, you’re into the zombies being unleashed on the planet and Brad Pitts character and his family are running for their lives.  You never do find out what really caused the virus that infects the population, but it’s a bit like Jurassic Park and Aliens where you really don’t care.  It’s a well done horror film where there isn’t a bunch of blood and guts, but people running for their lives being chased by creatures that are trying to bite them and in a situation that is completely out of their control.

I liked that it was realistic, showing that “Mother Nature” is a beast that you don’t want to mess with and how as a society we may unleash something that we can’t control.  God has clearly put controls into nature for our benefit, but if you mess with them, you may unleash Hell on Earth, such as the disappearance of the honey bee for example.  The movie didn’t pull any punches either.  It showed how people will act in desperate situations and that if you’re not useful to the Government in times of crisis than you and your family are expendable.

If you are in the mood for a scary movie with a good story then go and check out World War Z.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Bling Ring

blingringBecky and I went to see The Bling Ring yesterday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at The Bling Ring describes the movie as follows…

”In the fame-obsessed world of Los Angeles, a group of teenagers take us on a thrilling and disturbing crime-spree in the Hollywood hills. Based on true events, the group, who were fixated on the glamorous life, tracked their celebrity targets online, and stole more than 3 million in luxury goods from their homes. Their victims included Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Rachel Bilson, and the gang became known in the media as “The Bling Ring…”

The Review:  The Bling Ring is a very strange film that is based on a true story about a group of young people who thought it would be cool to break into celebrity homes and steal their stuff.  The movie sucks you in since you really can’t believe what you’re watching, as these criminals try to figure out when their targets won’t be home and then they can go into their homes and rob them.  The crazy thing is how they got away with it.

The movie is not great, but it’s fascinating because we couldn’t believe how stupid these people were and the amount of risks they were willing to take in order to obtain fancy stuff.  They were not even concerned about getting caught, believing they wouldn’t be found out.  They even wore items they stole and posted their photos on Facebook.  The movie is nuts because these people were crazy.  They broke into the home of Paris Hilton five times, along with numerous other celebrities.

It’s a good movie because it’s interesting, but it isn’t great.  The people are so strange that it’s a bit like watching a movie about people who need serious therapy.  In some ways it’s like a reality show, which is probably why we liked it.  I don’t think it was worth the price of admission, but it does make for a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Hangover Part III

thehangoverIIIBecky and I went to see The Hangover Part III a couple of weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at The Hangover III describes the movie as follows…

“”The Hangover Part III’ is the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy franchise. This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off….”

The Review:  The Hangover Part III is the final installment of the Trilogy about the “wolf pack”, the three guys who go to Las Vegas in search of fun and excitement only to end up in a situation of Mayhem.  The first one was the best of the three, the third one doesn’t save the second one, it’s just too much of the same characters doing the same stupid things.  That’s the problem with sequels though since all too often you’re hoping for something different and you just get more of the same.

There are a few funny scenes in this movie and some that are disturbing.  The initial story in the film is completely over-the-top and if you’re an animal lover you’re not going to like the scene with the giraffe, but it’s funny only because it is totally ridiculous.  It doesn’t really get much better though and that’s the problem with this movie is that it’s just so far fetched from a comic standpoint that it’s hard to watch.  One of the lead characters uses the “F” word about every other sentence too that is very annoying.

The movie is not terrible, but it’s not very good either.  We would have to rate it as a Don’t Bother or being a Rental at best.  I rarely agree with the professional movie critics, but in this case I have to agree since most of them gave it 1 1/2 stars and we’re going with 2 stars at the most for this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Internship

theinternshipBecky and I went to see The Internship last Weekend at the AMC Theater in Las Vegas, NV with our kids Conroy, Corban and Bianca. The MovieFone website at The Internship describes the movie as follows…

“‘Wedding Crashers duo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reteam on this Shawn Levy-directed comedy as two out of work salesmen who have to compete against an army of younger interns for a job at Google in this 20th Century Fox production…”

The Review:  The Internship is a pretty funny movie about two guys who lose their job and go to try to work for Google as Interns, but have no clue about technology.  The film has Vince Vaughn playing his usual carefree, clueless self and Owen Wilson doing pretty much the same thing, like a modern Laurel and Hardy duo.  They are pretty much the same characters that were in Wedding Crasher and it’s not nearly as funny as that film.  There are some good lines though, but if you’re not a technology buff at all, you may not find it very funny and a bit too predictable.

They have the bar, stripper scene that wasn’t necessary with some other parts of the film that were not really needed.  The biggest problem with the film is it’s really a massive PR Campaign for Google, making Google look like the greatest place to work in the world.  As if everyone would want to work for Google, which is hardly the case.  I know I have zero interest in working for Google, especially with the whole Privacy Issue and how these large technology companies are collecting and releasing data to the Government on everyone, which is totally uncool.  They definitely left that out of the movie.

The movie was entertaining though and we all liked it and thought it was fun.  They should have left out the bar scene and some of the other more adult humor in the film, which wasn’t necessary to make it work.  Other than that, it’s a typical Vince Vaughn movie, so it’s not going to win any awards but will make you laugh.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Now You See Me

nowyouseemeBecky and I went to see Now You See Me this Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO and then again at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, yesterday with our friends Rod and Kimberly and our boys Conroy and Corban. The MovieFone website at Now You See Me describes the movie as follows…

“‘NOW YOU SEE ME’ pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against “The Four Horsemen”, a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. “The Four Horsemen” pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law…”

The Review:  Now You See Me is a fun really movie with plenty of plot twists to keep you entertained and guessing about what’s going on.  Many of the critics have not been very kind to the film, some saying that it’s too predictable, which is ridiculous. It’s very well done with great acting and directing and it’s a very clean and entertaining film.

The story is clever as the FBI is chasing down a group of bank robbing magicians, who are giving all the money away to the audience on their quest for fame with really great magic tricks.  There is a plot within the plot as you try to discover what the real motive is for robbing these banks using elaborate magic tricks. Morgan Freeman’s character is making money off of exposing their tricks and he plays an interesting role in this movie.  It was really cool how they tied the whole story together with a famous escape artist and all of the characters had their own unique skills that made it really fun to watch.

They maybe could have done a little better job hiding the “fifth man”, but it had so much going on that it kept you guessing.  We all really liked it and would recommend seeing it.
