Becky and I went to see the new Ben Affleck movie Argo on opening night at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Argo describes the movie as follows…

“On Nov. 4, 1979, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 66 American hostages. Amid the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge with the Canadian ambassador. Knowing that it’s just a matter of time before the refugees are found and likely executed, the U.S. government calls on extractor Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) to rescue them. Mendez’s plan is to pose as a Hollywood producer scouting locations in Iran and train the refugees to act as his “film” crew…”

The Review: Argo is one of the best movies of the year!  This movie was extremely well done and exciting from start of finish.  The fact that it’s a true story and based on declassified information from the 1979 hostage crisis made it even more entertaining and interesting to watch.  Ben Affleck did a great job starring in this movie and being the Director.  The acting is great and the story is truly amazing, which makes it a great flick.

It was also neat to see the differences between life in 1979 compared to today, where we have instant communications, cell phones, the Internet, etc.  Simple things like being able to smoke on an airplane that you would never think about being possible today.  The clothes and haircuts were a crackup too.

I have talked to many people who have seen this movie and I haven’t met anyone who didn’t like it.  It’s definitely going to be one of those movies that people will be talking about for years to come.  It’s not that it has a great deal of action, but it’s a bit like a spy thriller as the CIA operative goes to great lengths, to the very brink of failure, to try to rescue the six Americans, who most certainly would be put to death in Iran.

The plan to rescue the trapped Americans is super cool, posing as Hollywood personalities making a movie.  It’s really cool and definitely worth seeing this film.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed and we’re both rating it a Don’t Miss It.

Becky and I took Conroy, Corban and Bianca to see the cartoon Hotel Transylvania at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO last week.  The Fandango website at Hotel Transylvania describes the movie as follows…

The Review
Hotel Transylvania is a new a new quirky comedy about a hotel that is started by Dracula to keep all monsters away from humans.  He builds this story that humans are dangerous creatures for monsters, so that he can protect his daughter from ever having contact with the human population.  It’s definitely a strange little flick, but kind of fun for the Halloween season.

The characters are the classic monsters, including skeletons and Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, along with many characters that younger kids will not recognize like The Blob, but it’s pretty well done.  It’s not a film you’re going to go to for the intellectual content, but it’s a fun children’s movie for sure.  Conroy who is now 14 thought it was stupid, but Corban and Bianca liked it.  Becky thought it was a rental, but the kid in me thought it was funny and Worth The Trip.

It’s doing very well at the box office, I saw that it did $42.5 million according to Net Flix, which is pretty amazing how well these children’s movies do compared to traditional films. With those types of revenues, I’m surprised Hollywood doesn’t put more money into kids’ films than adult films.  If you miss it at the box office, check it out when it comes on DVD.  It’s an entertaining movie.

I’m still behind on writing movies, so I’m writing them as I have time. I’ve been working on my new book for ShareMerchant.com, which has taken a great deal of time, so that I can get it launched. The Review: Taken 2 is the second installment of the Liam Neeson flick where he’s an ex-government agent that has to protect his family from evil men, who are trying to kill them.  Becky was funny and said, “How many times can you get stolen?”  Well apparently the answer is twice.

In the first movie Taken, his daugher is abducted by an Albian gang and he has to go and save her life.  After killing these wicked men, their relatives, are now coming back for revenge and they are determined to take the family and torture them for killing their family.

The movie is too much like a repeat of the first one with a slightly different twist since the bad guys are now after him, instead of his daughter.  It’s an exciting movie, but it’s not overly entertaining.  At least Becky and I were not overly thrilled about it.  It’s an okay action movie, but I would wait for the rental on this one.

Becky and I went to see the movie Looper at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  I’m still behind on writing movies, so Im’ writing them as I have time.  I’ve been working on my new book for ShareMerchant.com, which has been taking a great deal of time, so that I can get it launched very soon.  The Moviefone website at Looper describes the movie as follows…

The Review: Looper is a strange movie that takes place in the future when people can time travel, but it’s outlawed.  The crime syndicate has taken over the ability to time travel and they are using it to eliminate people that get in their way by jumping back in time and having them whacked.  The people who do the elimination are the Loopers and the main character is one, until he discovers that his time is coming to an end and they are going to send his 30 year old self back in time to be killed by himself.

That last part in itself is pretty stupid.  Why wouldn’t you have a Looper kill another older Looper, instead of killing themselves, which would create a problem for most people?  The movie jumps around quite a bit with stories going on within stories and characters that you meet briefly.  You never get emotionally attached to these people before they are gone, so they are more like “filler” for the film.

The Preview for this movie looked pretty good, but the Preview is definitely better than the movie.  Bruce Willis looks too old and doesn’t match the younger character of himself very well.  It reminded me of that stupid movie that Mel Gibson did years ago, “Signs” that sounded interesting, but went nowhere.  This film is disturbing on a number of levels, not the least of which is when they go back in time to kill children, who someday may grow up to be the bad guy of the future.  It’s pretty twisted.

We didn’t like this movie and I would have to say it’s between a Rental and Don’t Bother.  Becky definitely opted for the Don’t Bother and I’m pretty much there with her, but I’ll give it a Rental.

Becky and I went to see the movie Stolen earlier this month at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO.  I’m really behind on writing movie reviews, so Im’ writing them as I have time.  I’ve been working on my new book for ShareMerchant.com, which has been taking a great deal of time, but it’s almost finished.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows…

He must trust his instincts and his old partner in crime, the beautiful, sexy and smart Riley (Malin Ackerman), to do one more clever heist to get his daughter back alive before it’s too late…”

The Review  Stolen was a movie that we went into with very low expectations.  Nicolas Cage has been doing a bunch of low budget films lately and we figured this one would be along the same lines as his previous movies.  This movie was actually pretty entertaining.  It’s one of those, “been there, done that” type films, but it’s done pretty well nevertheless.

It’s about a couple of bank robbers, one with a conscience and one without one.  The one bank robber has no problem taking money from banks, but he’s not a murderer, while the other guy will do whatever it takes for self preservation.  When they get caught after a massive take and the lead character goes to the jail, his partner makes plans for a different future for when he gets out.  A future that includes taking his daughter.

The movie moves slow, but it’s still an exciting story and will make for a good rental.  We both liked it, but it’s somewhere between Worth The Trip and a Rental.

The Review 2016: Obama’s America is a documentary by Dinesh D’ Souza that is a very controversial film because it asks questions about the current President Barrack Hussein Obama II that many people have about what his mission is for the United States of America and his past history.  The President has sealed his college records, he distanced himself from Jeremiah Wright, after hanging out in his church for years and created many other questions about his first term as President.

What I find fascinating is how many liberals are having a problem with this film, but they never questioned Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 about President George Bush.  The difference between the two films is prety huge.  I saw both of them and I liked them both, but Michael Moore’s film was much more sensationalistic with a great deal of speculation and far fewer facts.  This movie is based largely on President Obama’s own book that was first published in 1995, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, which was long before he ever came on the scene as President.  How can you deny facts that The President of the United States wrote about himself?

Dinesh connects the dots between Barrack’s upbringing in Indonesia and Hawaii away from his birth father Barrack Sr., who had anti-colonial views, and President Obama’s own political views that are also anti-colonial as well.  He is not a fan of Israel and sees America as a bully to the rest of the World, which if true, is crazy for a President of the United States of America.  It would be like the CEO of Disney having a problem with Mickey Mouse; He wouldn’t last long as the CEO.  He makes a very interesting and compelling case in this film about why America has already and is going to change even more drastically under his continued leadership.  I got the impression from the film that the poor of America are  rich compared to the rest of the world, so in President Obama’s view, America needs to give back to the rest of the world and pay for our sins of being involved in colonizing the world and protecing Israel.  It’s a scary future for America, if it’s true.

Dinesh is being criticized though that parts of his film is not true, but I would say that if half of what he’s shared is true that it’s disconcerting.  He has responded to an Associated Press article that you can read at this link – fact check.  I thought the movie was definitely Worth The Trip, and a Don’t Miss It if you’re a History buff.  Becky was bored and fell asleep a few times, but she doesn’t like documentaries or history.

The Review The Words is not a movie for everyone, it has a bit of suspense and a great deal of drama, but it’s very well done.  The acting is great, the story is pretty wild since it’s about an author, who writes a book, about an author who is trying to write a book and he finds a manuscript while on his Honeymoon with the love of his life.  It’s not a fast moving film, it makes you think about what’s going on with the characters.  The film asks some moral questions, such as what would you do if you found an unpublished book, you were a struggling writer and the book could become a best seller and launch your career.  It’s rather fascinating, especially in our day when we live in a world of compromise and few have integrity.

The film takes you into the lives of three different men, all of whom are writers and you get to see their struggles, failures and successes.  The Critics didn’t like this movie for the most part, but the fans really liked it and we’re with the fans on this one.  I thought the movie was extremely well done and we found ourselves talking about it again today.  It will definitely make you think.  Becky and I both liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip.

Becky and I went to see the movie Lawless last night with our friend Michelle at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  I’m really far behind on writing movies, so Im’ writing them backwards right now.  The Moviefone website at Lawless describes the movie as follows…

The Review Lawless is a different kind of gangster movie that takes place in the 1930’s, in the back woods of Virginia.  It’s about these three brothers and their father and how their lives revolved around running moonshine during Prohibition and how they didn’t allow the Chicago mobsters to come in and tell them how to run things.

My grandfather actually ran moonshine during Prohibition and was one of the first guys granted a liquor license after Prohibition, so I found it entertaining.  It’s very graphic at times and clearly the people during that time were much tougher in dealing with hardships than we are today.  I don’t think it was a great movie, the acting was very good, the Directing was also pretty well done, but the story was a little dull after a while.

The Critics haven’t been overly excited about this film, but the fans seem to like it.  I liked it, but I would probably wait for the rental on this one.  Becky and Michelle thought the same thing.

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie The Bourne Legacy a few weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at The Bourne Legacy describes the movie as follows…

The Bourne Legacy is a new version of the Bourne series with a new star and character, who was the step beyond Jason Bourne, which is hard to imagine.  In this case, our government has altered his body, so that he has genetic mutations to improve his mad skills at being able to seek and destroy.

As you would expect from The Bourne Legacy, there is plenty of action in this film.  There is a major car (motorcycle) chase, that probably went on for too long because the movie is a long movie.  It’s over 2 hours in length, so for some people, including some of my family members, it was too long.

It’s not a kid’s film, it’s definitely PG-13, so be aware of that if you decide to watch the film.  Our children are old enough that they liked it, but there is definitely some violence in the movie, including a very disturbing part that hit a little too close to home with the recent movie theater shooting.

Overall, it’s very well done for what is a sequel to the Jason Bourne Trilogy and if you liked the first Bourne movies you should like this one.  You don’t have to have seen the previous films to understand this one, but they did tie them into this movie.

I thought it was a Don’t Miss It, but I really enjoy the Bourne series.

The Review
The Dark Knight Rises is the final installment of the Batman series that is now clouded in real-life horror, after a madman went to the Midnight showing in the Cinemark 16 theater here in Aurora, Colorado and murdered and injured people in Theater 9.  The absolute senseless killing of innocent people committed by the monster on that evening is unbelievable and we pray that God will have mercy on all the souls and the injured of that night, while helping their families.  If you would like to make a donation to help with the victims medical expenses, please visit GivingFirst.org.

The movie was actually fantastic for the last installment of the Batman trilogy.  There is plenty of action, it’s a bit too violent at times as the villain is diabolical.  I thought it was amazing and extremely well done.  However, it’s very long and you really need to be a Batman fan to like this film.  Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman was great.  Becky thought it was way too long and didn’t like it that much.  Conroy, Corban and Bianca liked it more than Becky, but Becky and Bianca both thought it was a rental.
