John & Becky’s Movie Review of Dark Shadows

Becky and I went to see the movie Dark Shadows a couple weeks ago at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO with Conroy, Corban and Bianca.  The Fandango website at Dark Shadows describes the movie as follows…

“In 18th-century Maine, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) presides over the town of Collinsport. A rich and powerful playboy, Barnabas seals his own doom when he breaks the heart of a witch named Angelique (Eva Green). Angelique turns Barnabas into a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas escapes from his tomb and finds 1972 Collinsport a very different place. His once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of his family have fared little better…”

The Review
Dark Shadows
is a movie that is based on the 1970’s television series with the same name that I actually grew up watching with my older sister Barbara.  We used to watch that goofy and creepy Soap Opera in the afternoons after school on a black and white television with the famous Barnabas Collins.  When I first saw the popular movie Twilight, I thought the author had knocked off the vampire character in that series, who had missed his long love and fell in love with a mortal.

In this rendition, the vampire is played by Johnny Depp who is really great in this quirky dark comedy, even having a well done old English accent.  All the characters in this flick are really good, including the gardener, the witch, the doctor, the daughter and of course Elizabeth Collins played by the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer.

The story is really good and very funny.  It’s a bit strange like the Addam’s Family, but it’s built from a Soap Opera, so there is sexual content and it’s rated PG-13.  So be aware of this, if you bring your kids to this film, since you could be uncomfortable as a parent for a few scenes and the main character is a blood sucking vampire.  There are a couple scenes that they could have left out, like one with the daughter morphing into a creature near the end of the film that was lame.

We all liked this film though.  It’s a Johnny Depp, Tim Burton deal, so be prepared for bizarre.  I’m rating it a Don’t Miss It, but it’s not for everyone for sure.

John – **** Don’t Miss It
Becky – *** Worth The Trip

Conroy – **** Don’t Miss It
Corban – **** Don’t Miss It
Bianca – **** Don’t Miss It
