John & Becky’s Movie Review of War Horse

Becky and I went to see the film War Horse on opening night at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at  War Horse describes the movie as follows…

” An epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.”

The Review
War Horse got great reviews from fans and critics alike, but for Becky and I it was a bit like watching an old Western film on television like Gunsmoke.  Even the cinematography in the film has an old feel to it, making it feel like you were watching Gone With The Wind.  I was waiting for Rhett Butler to appear on the screen and talk about the horse.

If you’re a big time horse lover, you’ll probably really like this movie.  Otherwise you may be pretty bored.  The film is about a boy who gets a horse and then loses it during the War.  He then joins the Army and goes in search of his horse, which you find out later in the movie.  The young guy really needed a girlfriend, which never materialized in this movie for him.

War Horse jumps all over the place with a variety of characters, showing the horrors of war, while following the horse that manages to stay alive in a variety of circumstances and then goes back to the main character in search of his horse.  After a while we started to lose interest in the horse and the characters.  It’s hot a terrible film, but it’s just not very entertaining because of the Directing of the movie.  It will make a good rental though.
