John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The November Man

novembermanBecky and I went to see The November Man last night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at The November Man  describes the movie as follows…

A legendary ex-CIA agent emerges from retirement to protect a witness, but his mission lands him in the sights of his former protégé in this cat-and-mouse spy thriller based on the novel There are no Spies by Bill Granger. Having serves the CIA loyally for years, Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) retreates to Switzerland to live out the rest of his days in peace. Peter finds himself drawn back into the fray…

The Review:  The November Man is a bit like those movies that Clint Eastwood used to make when he was too old to be doing the things he was trying to do at the time.  Now we have Pierce Brosnan doing the same thing as an old 007 type working for the CIA.  The movie has an okay story and the acting is okay, but not really that great since Pierce plays the same character all the time.  The movie just didn’t do it for us and reminded us of watching a remake of a James Bond film.

The story is just too far fetched at times with people running around shooting people and the police never show up.  The characters end up outsmarting the CIA, the Russians and everyone involved that is chasing them with a bit of the Jason Bourne feel to it.  In this case, it was “Peter Bored” since the character Peter Devereaux was just too boring.  Becky ended up falling asleep.  I would have to say that this is a Rental for sure and since Becky slept through most of the movie it was a Don’t Bother for her.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of When The Game Stands Tall

whengametall-4Becky and I went to see When The Game Stands Tall last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at When The Game Stands Tall describes the movie as follows…

“James CaviezelLaura Dern, and Michael Chiklis star in this emotionally charged sports drama inspired by the true story of celebrated football coach Bob Ladouceur (Caviezel), and the personal trials he endured while leading the De La Salle High School Spartans on an unprecedented 151-game winning streak. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Review:  When The Game Stands Tall is a typical sports movie about a football program and a coach who has a different approach to winning.  We went into this movie with really low expectations since most sports movies are pretty terrible.  The fact that it had a Christian spiritual element to it made me think it was going to be even worse, since most of those films are just a little too campy.  I’m a Christian, but I’m not a huge fan of most Christian movies.  We were pleasantly surprised.  The closest movie that I could use to describe this film as far as the way it was done with quality content is Blindside with Sandra Bullock.  If you haven’t seen that movie, you should watch it.  It’s a good sports film too.

This movie is done extremely well.  The story is great, the acting is good, it was emotional for a football film and it had a really super message about life and the choices that we make as individuals.  The film was very inspirational and we both really liked this movie.  This is the kind of movie that will have you leaving feeling good and glad that you spent the money to go and see it.  The fact that it was based on a true story made it even better.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

sincitydametokillforBecky and I went to see Sin City: A Dame To Kill For last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at Sin City: A Dame To Kill For describes the movie as follows…

“Robert Rodriguez teams with Frank Miller to direct this follow-up to Sin City from a script by Miller and William Monahan based on preexisting stories along with new ones written for the big screen. Josh Brolin stars in the adaptation of the comic miniseries (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), which tells the backstory of Clive Owen‘s Dwight character as he is wrapped up in the thralls of femme fatale, Ava (Eva Green). Also new to the series is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Johnny, a mysterious gambler

The Review: Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is round two of the first Sin City film with Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba that Robert Rodriguez did a few years ago.  It’s a really strange and violent film with multiple stories going on at the same time with a comic book feel to it.  The characters are interesting, but this is a weird “cult” type science fiction and action film that is probably too whacky for most people.  It is one of those movies that you will either really like or probably hate.  I think that very few people will kind of like this movie, which is why I’m giving it a rental for a rating, since I was one of those people.

It’s extremely violent, so I didn’t really like that part of the film.  There is also plenty of sex too, which you would expect both of these I guess with a name like Sin City.  The comic book feel I thought was pretty cool and that’s what I liked about the movie because it’s very different.  It is in black and white and every once in a while there is a splash of color, so from an artistic perspective that was rally cool.  The movie though wasn’t very good because the story is not that great because it jumps around all the time.  You never get emotionally attached to any of the characters in the movie  You really don’t care what happens to anyone in the film because they are all nuts.  The acting is good though and the characters are definitely bizarre.

Becky hated this movie and fell asleep during it.  She thought it was a complete waste of time and fell asleep a few times during the movie.  Which is why she said it’s a Don’t Bother.  I liked it a little more than she did, but I wouldn’t want to see it again, so I’m giving it a Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Giver

thegiverBecky and I went to see The Giver last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at The Giver  describes the movie as follows…

“A young man living in a future where complacency is valued above all else discovers the sinister secrets that hold his fragile society together after being selected to become the Receiver of Memory in this adaptation of author Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning young-adult novel. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) was raised to believe that conformity is the key to contentment. The society Jonas lives in is a peaceful one, in large part because their collective memories have been entrusted to the Giver (Jeff Bridges).

The Review:  The Giver is a trip!  This movie takes you into a future where society decides what you will become, there is no free will anymore and the State even controls your memories and what you know.  As would be expected, everything is really a lie because Communism doesn’t really work, just ask the millions of people who grew up and died under Joseph Stalin.  The Giver provides a much more sterile and peaceful world that seems very serene and nice, but appearances are not what they seem to be.

The story is really good and the acting is great.  It’s strange because most of the film is in black and white since this society doesn’t want people to see in color.  It is probably how the future will actually be with the number of whacko’s we have running the governments of the world today and wanting to control the lives of people more and more.  This movie is very well done.  It’s entertaining and fascinating.  It’s not a great film, but it’s done well and enjoyable as a science fiction film.

I know it was good because Becky doesn’t like science fiction films, but she liked this one.  She liked Divergent too though.  I think she really liked how organized and clean this futuristic society in The Giver was and she probably would have fit right in like Katie Holmes.  I would have definitely rebelled against it.  We both liked it and thought it was worth going to see on the big screen.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Guardians Of The Galaxy

guardiansofthefgalaxyBecky and I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy on opening week at the Regal theaters in Lone Tree, CO last week.  The MovieFone website at Guardians of the Galaxy describes the movie as follows…

Marvel Studios expands their cosmic presence on the big screen with this adaptation of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series, with Zero Dark Thirty‘sChris Pratt heading up a cast that includes David Bautista and Zoe Saldana.Super‘s James Gunn helms the big-budget sci-fi film. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

The Review:  Guardians of The Galaxy is one of the reasons why I enjoy going to the movies.  This movie is funny, has a great story, is exciting and includes plenty of action.  It’s just a really fun movie for the whole family.  The acting is good and the characters are very cool.  If you’re a fan of science fiction and Marvel comic films than you should really like this movie.  I really haven’t spoken with anyone who hasn’t liked it yet.

This movie is a block buster and it’s doing very well at the Box Office.  It’s about a young boy who gets taken by aliens when he’s a kid to another part of the galaxy to be raised by aliens that are rogue alien bad guys.  He ends up becoming a thief and misfit that teams up with some other angry alien misfits that end up having to save the galaxy from destruction.  The movie is very strange and funny.  It feels like a comic book and that’s what makes it such a good movie.

We all liked it and found it entertaining.  Conroy ended up seeing it twice and I could probably see it again.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Hercules

HerculesCurban and I went to see the new movie Hercules at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO earlier this week. The MovieFone website at Hercules describes the movie as follows…

‘Though he is famous across the ancient world for his larger-than-life exploits, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson), the son of Zeus and a human woman, is haunted by his tragic past. Now, he fights only for gold as a traveling mercenary, accompanied by a band of loyal followers, including Amphiarus (Ian McShane) and Autolycus (Rufus Sewell). However, when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek his help in defeating a savage warlord, Hercules must find the true hero within himself once again.

The Review:  I met Corban to go and see this new movie Hercules and we went into it with pretty low expectations.  The film delivered as expected.  It was really predictable and boring at times and reminded us of something we would have watched on television.  The story was much better than the original and more believable since Hercules was just a strong guy with a team of people who helped him become the famous Son of Zeus.

There are a few plot twists throughout the movie and it is entertaining at times, but it was a bit too much like Arnold’s Conan the Barbarian back in the late 1980’s with a guy with big muscles running around.  The acting isn’t the best, but it’s one of those films that will make a good renal.  It’s between being a rental and being worth the price of admission, but it kind of lost Corban and I for the most part since it was just too much of the same thing we’ve seen done before.

If you’re a big Dwayne Johnson fan you’ll probably like this movie more than we did.  Otherwise this is a movie that is best to be watched as a rental.
