Becky and I went to see the new Christmas film Into The Woods at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO on opening night with Conroy and Bianca.  The Fandango website at Into the Woods describes the movie as follows…

The Review: We didn’t know this movie was a musical or we probably would have skipped it, so if you’re not a fan of musicals you will want to blow this movie off for sure.  You know, those musicals where people burst into song for no reason to sing about why their cow is white.  It’s that type of a film that is more like going to the theater and seeing a play instead of watching a movie. This is not like Pitch Perfect where people sing at appropriate times, but one of those sappy films where people sing about everything that happens in their life.  Bianca looked at me about 20 minutes into the movie and asked if we could please leave.  Although, I think the movie Grease is probably the exception because that was a pretty fun musical.  This film was a bit too depressing to be a musical.

The acting, the characters, the costumes and the cinematography were all very well done.  Even the singing was really good at times, but these type of movies are exhausting to watch and I’m not sure why people like them.  If you’re a fan of these type of musicals you will love this film, although it should have ended with Cinderella finding her Prince Charming, but instead they had to take a turn to the dark side and make sure that a “happily ever after” wouldn’t happen.

Conroy liked it much more than the rest of us.  In fairness to the actors that did a great job I’ll rate this movie a rental, but for me and Becky it was definitely a Don’t Bother.

The Review: This is the second installment of the first movie Horrible Bosses that was actually pretty funny.  The second time around it wasn’t nearly as funny as the first flick and was pretty crude most of the time.  The characters are still funny, but it’s almost like the exact same movie re-written with the characters in a different setting.  Much like watching a sitcom on television where they have another episode instead of a completely different movie.

Horrible Bosses 2 isn’t a terrible film, but it is pretty raunchy at times so be prepared for that aspect of the film.  There are quite a few good laughs and the story does have a couple of plot twists that make it entertaining.  The problem though with sequels is that you often compare them to the first one and the first film was definitely better than the second installment.

If you liked the first one you will probably like this one too, but otherwise you are better off waiting for the rental and watching the first one instead until this comes out at Redbox or on Netflix.

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie Big Hero 6 at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The MSN website at Big Hero 6 describes the movie as follows…

The Review: Big Hero 6 is a cartoon that we decided to all go and see together since we are fans of good animation.  The story is really well done and fun about a young boy genius who has a brother that creates a unique robot while in a high tech University.   The characters are really well done and it’s a great movie for the whole family.  Everyone that went with us liked it and it was very well done with a great villain who comes to power because of the main character.

I don’t want to give away this movie, but if you are looking for a good family film to go see, this is one that everyone will like.  It’s probably not well suited for really little children since one of the characters dies in the film, but other than that it’s definitely a great family flick.

The Review: This film has been a big hit with the critics and at the box office as the amazing story of the life of Stephen Hawking.  We had great expectations for this film not knowing anything about his life, but we did not find it as good as everyone else did.  For starters the great Stephen Hawking was not just an atheist, but someone who continually confronted people who believed in God as though they were stupid and he was smarter than God.

Which is rather ironic given his condition since in all of his brilliance he didn’t have the power to heal himself.   I worship someone who rose from the dead, so if he could have fixed himself I would have been more impressed.  Some may find that statement a bit harsh or over-the-top, but I believe that only a fool would say in his heart that there is not a God.  Let alone someone in a wheelchair who cannot even speak without the help of a machine, who would take the time to challenge God and anyone who believes in God. I don’t have time for people like that, even if our modern society wants to celebrate this kind of brilliance.

Which was also rather interesting to me because he spent most of his time proving his “theories” and then turned around and said he had to disprove his theories as being wrong.  That is what this movie is about The THEORY of Everything and my theory at the end of this movie was that this guy sucked at relationships and this movie was a complete waste of our time.

His wife turned out to be a saint and he turned out to be a jerk.  She could have pulled the plug on him and let him die before he ever reached his fame and fortune and then he turned around and leaves her for some other woman who was fascinated by the limelight that the world gave him.  Even if he was a brilliant person, with a cruel disease and stuck in a wheelchair, he seemed to me to be incredibly stupid when it came to how he treated people who loved him.  I was not a fan of this guy and found his life story read like a Greek tragedy.

It was bad enough to watch him go through his challenges with his debilitating disease, which was terrible and we felt very sorry for him and his struggles.  However to then throw his relationship with his wife and others into the mix was just not an enjoyable film.  Of course, he had to talk about how he was smarter than God throughout the film too, which was even more annoying.

What was great about this film was the acting and the actor who played Stephen Hawking needs to earn an award because he was amazing.  He really played the role well, even if we were not a fan of the person he was portraying.  Stephen turned out to be an Evolutionist, which was not a surprise.  Scientists like Hawking choose to ignore certain laws and truths when it is convenient, including the fact that the Theory of Evolution is mathematically impossible.  This is a good article on that topic if you’re interested in seeing why Evolution is a mathematical myth – http://www.icr.org/article/493/

Anyway, we would skip this movie or wait to watch the rental if you’re interested.

Becky and I went to see the film Interstellar last week at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO.  The Fandango website at Interstellar describes the movie as follows…

The Review: I thought this movie was going to be really terrible.  I wasn’t looking forward to seeing it and neither was Becky with a downer story about how mankind has destroyed the Earth and we would need to find another planet to survive as a species.  In some respects it was really bad because of that, but it was much better than we both expected.  It has some cool scenes from outer space and shows how mankind desires to “boldly go where no man has gone before.”

The story deals with how mankind has destroyed the planet and in order to save our species (that always crack me up because we are not animals like the Evolutionist wants us to be), but nevertheless we need to save mankind in this film by going to a new planet.  There are also some aspects of the film that show the evil of man’s nature, including greed and self absorption.  That makes the movie interesting and I really liked the way they used Time as an important element in this film.  In fact, that’s one of my favorite parts of the movie because very seldom do astrophysicists discuss the reality that when they look into the void of space they are looking into the past.

They also deal with Einstein’s theory of relativity in action with the main character when they land on a planet based on the rotation of the planet.  That was pretty cool.  I liked the movie more than Becky did.  The acting was good and the characters were interesting.

Becky and I went to see the film Before I Go to Sleep last night at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO with our son Corban.  The Fandango website at Before I Go to Sleep describes the movie as follows…

“A woman (Nicole Kidman) awakes each day with no memory as a result of a traumatic accident…”

The Review: This movie stars Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth and it’s about a woman who has an accident and she is an amnesia patient.  Each day she wakes up and cannot remember anything from the day before.  She is 40 years old and she believes she is 20 years old and her husband has been taking care of her since her traumatic brain injury, but she suspects something is wrong about the entire situation.

This movie is really clever.  It’s kind of low budget with some good actors and the story is really wild.  It moves really slow until about three quarters of the way through the film and then it gets very exciting as you get one twist after another.  It will keep you guessing about what’s going on and it’s a very good suspense thriller.  We all liked it and found it entertaining and a bit spooky at times as you start to find out more about her accident.

We all thought it was a movie not to miss because it was done so well.

Becky and I went to see the film Nightcrawler last night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark and Maria.  The Fandango website at Nightcrawler describes the movie as follows…

“An ambitious young crime journalist probes the dark underbelly of L.A. in this cynical urban drama that marks the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy (Real Steal, The Bourne Legacy). In short order Lou has hired an assistant (Riz Ahmed) to help him navigate the city streets, and started selling footage to local TV producer Nina (Rene Russo), one of Joe’s regular buyers. As fast learner with an eye for detail, Lou isn’t above manipulating a crime scene in order to get a picture that tells a story…”

The Review:  Let me start by saying that Mark fell asleep within the first ten minutes of the start of this movie and thought it was boring.  Maria fell asleep a couple of times and so did Becky, so that pretty much left me to actually watch the film from start until finish.  And this movie is a trip.  Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing in this movie.  His character is psychotic and even says at one time in the film how he doesn’t like people.  The way that his character goes from being out of a job to controlling people in various situations is wild and extremely well done.  You will believe that this character could really pull off what he does in this movie and I think that’s what makes it such a good film.

I don’t think this movie will be for everyone.  Obviously, the three people I was with didn’t really get into it and thought it was “boring”, but I found it very entertaining and fascinating.  The acting was great and the situations and characters in the movie with a glimpse into network news channels was excellent.  Be forewarned though that the content is disturbing and graphic and the main character is close to being a serial killer as you can get without actually directly wielding the weapon.

I think it was worth the trip to the movies, but Becky definitely disagreed.

Becky and I went to see the film Fury at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The MSN Movie website at Fury describes the movie as follows…

The Review: Fury is just incredible movie making.  The acting is fantastic, the story is as real as you can get and it is a reminder of the price that men and women paid fighting the Germans in World War II to defeat the Nazi regime.  It is brutal and does not candy coat death, destruction and war like so many films tend to do.  There are parts of this movie that are very disturbing and that will make you think, including an execution of a man pleading for his life.  The movie illustrates how war makes people hard and able to commit murder given the circumstances, even if they don’t think that they will.

Fury reminded me of Saving Private Ryan in that it is one of those movies that you have to see, but I don’t have any interest in seeing it again.  It was very well done, even if you’re not a fan or war movies you should like this film and we definitely rated it a Don’t Miss It.

Becky and I went to see a sneak preview of the film John Wick at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at John Wick describes the movie as follows…

“Retired hit-man John Wick (Keanu Reeves) hits the streets of NYC in search of the gangsters who robbed him of his reason for living in this Lionsgate thriller featuring Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe….”

The Review:  If you go see this movie, just think of the Matrix because that’s how much killing takes place in this film with Keanu Reeves as John Wick.  It is extremely far fetched with John Wick having almost super hero skills, but it’s a pretty fun action flick overall.  I liked this movie much more than Becky did, since it’s a “guy flick”, but the character is so much like Neo in the Matrix that it’s a bit too much at times.  The story isn’t nearly as good as The Matrix either.  It’s one of those movies that you think you’ve seen before with movies like Jack Reacher and others, which is one of the problems with the film.

It’s not a terrible movie, but it’s definitely a “me too” movie that has been done so many times before with the “hit man” or the special operative movie like Taken and Take 2 and soon to be Taken 3.  I think that’s the biggest flaw of the film is that it’s not unique enough compared to other films that we’ve all seen before.  I did like some of the cinematography and the way the takes people out is pretty cool since he doesn’t really think about it and always takes a kill shot.  That was different from other films like this where the character is almost being “nice”.  The fight scene at the end was lame considering how many people he takes out earlier on in the film.

I would have to say that this is a good rental to wait until it shows up on Netflix or at the rental box.  I’m sure it will become a cult classic like The Matrix once it goes into the video world.

Becky and I went to see the film Dracula Untold last night at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Dracula Untold describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  I was looking forward to seeing this movie since I have always enjoyed Bran Stoker’s Dracula and thought it would be cool to see another movie about Dracula.  The special effects were done well, but the story was kind of lame.  It started out very good and was a pretty exciting film, but by the end of the film it got pretty goofy with vampires all over the place.

I don’t think this movie will be for everyone.  It starts out good, but it’s more of a war movie than a vampire horror film.  It has some elements that are more like the movie Van Helsing with it’s “campy” approach to the vampires.  It wasn’t terrible, but it was fairly entertaining.  Once again, there is a final battle scene where Dracula goes from being a super hero that is embodied by evil to suddenly experiencing his kryptonite and struggles to beat a mere mortal.  That was a bit lame.  Becky didn’t like this movie much at all and thought it was a don’t bother.  I think she fell asleep during it.

I think it will make a pretty good rental.
