John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Express

The ExpressBecky and I went to see the new movie The Express yesterday at the theaters, in Dillon, CO. The Fandango movie website at The Express describes the movie as follows:

“Born into poverty, Ernie Davis (Rob Brown) overcomes many obstacles to get into Syracuse University’s football program. Under the guidance of Coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid), Davis becomes one of the school’s best players, even surpassing Jim Brown’s achievements. In 1961 Davis becomes the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy, but there is one more obstacle in his life that he must overcome.”

The Review
The Express is an incredible film that I thought should have done much better at the box office than it did for it’s opening weekend. Dennis Quaid was really great in this movie, and so was Rob Brown with the only complaint that Quaid’s character took God’s name in vain, which was offensive and unnecessary. Beyond the language, this movie is both inspiring and an amazing true story about Ernie Davis and the challenges he faced at a time when our country was divided by race and there were few opportunities for people of color.

We took Bianca and Corban to see this movie and although it’s rated PG-13 we were glad that we did. We talked about the movie on the way back to the hotel we were staying at in Breckenridge. Bianca who is only seven commented, “Dad, they really wouldn’t let Ernie into that hotel because of the color of his skin?” I said, “Yes, that’s what they used to do.” and without hesitation she said, “Well, that’s stupid!”. It’s amazing that a seven year old can figure that out, but that millions of Americans tolerated that kind of injustice for so many years. Corban had a similar response to Bianca, although he was really ticked that they swore in the movie so much and especially took God’s name in vain. He said, “I would have rated it as a Don’t Miss It, but now I’m only giving it a Worth The Trip because I didn’t like the swearing”.

There’s a great line in the film where a white guy on the Texas football team condemns a lineman on the Syracuse team for sticking up for Ernie and tells him that he’s not being a good Christian. The other guy replies, “I’m Jewish.”, which was really quite funny. Unfortunately, if Christians who are prejudice actually read their Bible they would know that God condemns behavior that discriminates against another human being based on race. President Abraham Lincoln understood this and it cost him his life.

This is a very powerful movie and we all really enjoyed it and thought it was definitely worth the price of admission. If you’re looking for a really good movie to take your family to that shows the hardships of American’s and what can happen when people persevere and beat the odds, you will enjoy this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Appaloosa

AppaloosaBecky and I went to see the new movie Appaloosa last week at the Kerasotes theaters, in Castle Rock, CO. The MSN movie website at Appaloosa describes the movie as follows:

“Upon drifting into a troubled Western outpost and discovering that the helpless locals are being terrorized by a ruthless rancher and his brutish hired hands, two rugged, straight-shooting peacemakers decide to stick around and put things right in this Western adapted from the novel by Robert B. Parker, and directed by Ed Harris. Bragg (Jeremy Irons) is a rancher who believes himself to be above the law, a stance that’s forever cemented when he guns down the town sheriff and his deputy in cold blood…”

The Review
Appaloosa is a pretty good Western if you’re a fan of Western’s, but it moves really slow and seems a bit unrealistic at times. The acting is extremely well done and even the directing is great, but the story is kind of boring and almost like you’ve seen it all before. Guy falls in love with woman who’s a rascal and gets betrayed by her as he compromises his own values.

Goblin Network AdAppaloosa isn’t a terrible movie, but it’s just not great and with the price of admission these days we would suggest waiting for the rental. Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen, and RenĂ©e Zellweger all play their parts really well, but there just isn’t enough excitement to keep the average movie goer’ entertained.

Becky and I even commented about how bored everyone looked. During this one scene the two main characters are on a porch drinking coffee and hanging out. Viggo’s character says to Ed’s character about going out to investigate some bad guys, “Can I finish my coffee first.” Probably pretty realistic for that time in history, but that one scene summed up this movie.

We would recommend waiting for the rental on this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Flash of Genius

Flash of GeniusBecky and I went to see the new movie Flash of Genius on Friday at the AMC theaters, in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at Flash of Genius describes the movie as follows:

“Greg Kinnear stars in director Marc Abraham’s man-against-the-system docudrama Flash of Genius as inventor Robert Kearns, the visionary who developed the modern intermittent windshield wiper. Kearns submitted the invention to each of the big three auto companies, each of which promptly rejected it; the companies then turned around and put the device to use. The enraged inventor spent several decades attempting to collect on his patent, and mounting lawsuits that traveled all the way to the Supreme…”

The Review
Flash of Genius is a great movie based on a true story about a University professor who had an idea to create the intermittent windshield wiper. He went to work in his basement with his family and talked with his friend who made millions of dollars as a car parts supplier to the big three automakers. Little did he know at the time, that Ford was going to steal his idea and leave him hanging with a boatload of debt rather than manufacturing the product for them.

Goblin Network AdThe acting is great in this movie, the story is unreal since Mr. Kearns decides to fight Ford Motor company against all odds and we were amazed at how important “ethics” were to this man, which is certainly something you won’t find in today’s society. The film drives that point home though early on when he opens the beginning of each classroom teaching with the responsibility of ethics as engineers. The cost though was incredible. We left wondering if it was worth losing so much that was dear to him to stand up against the company for his invention.

We would recommend seeing this movie and it’s definitely worth the price of admission. We both felt that it was great to see a really good movie for a change.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Eagle Eye

Eagle EyeBecky and I went to see the new movie Eagle Eye last week at the AMC theaters, in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at Eagle Eye describes the movie as follows:

“Shia LeBeouf and Michelle Monaghan star in Disturbia director D.J. Caruso’s race-against-time thriller concerning two strangers thrust together by a mysterious telephone call, and their frantic efforts to discover why they have inexplicably become the nation’s most wanted fugitives. Jerry Shaw (LeBouf) and Rachel Holloman (Monaghan) were complete strangers at the beginning of the day, but that changed the instant a strange woman called to threaten both their lives and the lives of their loved ones…”

The Review
Eagle Eye was definitely a great action thriller with plenty of explosions and excitement that kept our interest. It is wild and exciting, but if the one shortcoming is that it was too predictable. However, the acting and story was enough to keep your interest.

Goblin Network AdThe worst part of this movie is that it was rated PG-13, which meant that it was loaded with teenagers who never learned any manners at home for when they go to a movie. You know, the kids who now think it’s cool to talk in movies, get up and walk around the theater and text message their buddies. They are great at wrecking good movies and make you want to stay home, save your money, and wait for the rental.

Eagle Eye is designed to make you want to think twice about getting on your cell phone with Big Brother watching your every move. It doesn’t accomplish that by any means, but it’s done pretty well overall. We thought it was worth seeing on the big screen.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Burn After Reading

Burn After ReadingBecky and I went to see the new Brad Pitt, George Clooney flick Burn After Reading last week at the Kerasote theaters, in Castle Rock, CO. The MSN movie website at Burn After Reading

The Breed hd

describes the movie as follows:

“A CIA agent who is currently in the process of writing a book loses the disc containing his only manuscript in this comedic tale of espionage that reunites filmmaking duo Joel and Ethan Coen with Intolerable Cruelty and O Brother, Where Art Thou? star George Clooney. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide”

The Review
Burn After Reading is a film done by the same goofball Joel Coen who did that terrible movie No Country For Old Men. It’s about the same level of intelligence as that film.

Goblin Network AdIn fairness, there are a few funny parts of this movie and the acting is done pretty well, except I did see George Clooney’s character already in “O’Brother Where Art Thou”. John Malkovich was really great in this movie, but his CIA character was nothing short of nuts. However, the acting couldn’t save this movie because it doesn’t do anything except take you through a twisted world of strange individuals all intermingled in some kind of an affair.

I didn’t like it and thought at best it was a rental, but I would probably skip it all together. Becky liked it a little more than I did and thought it would make for a good rental.

John & Becky's Movie Review of Igor

IgorBecky and I took the kids and our nephews to see the new animated film Igor last week at the AMC theaters, in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at Igor describes the movie as follows:

“John Cusack leads an all-star voice cast featuring Jay Leno, Molly Shannon, John Cleese, Jeremy Piven, Steve Buscemi, and Jennifer Coolidge in this computer-animated comedy about a gifted scientist who happens to have been born with a most unfortunate deformity. Igor (voice of Cusack) may have been born with a brilliant mind, but unfortunately everyone around him is too distracted by his pronounced hunchback to notice. Forced to serve as a lowly lab assistant to nefarious scientist Dr. Glickenstein…”

The Review
Igor is a strange little movie with sketchy animation and a terrible story that could have been done fantastic, but instead is terrible. There is even the word “damn” used in this movie, which again shows how out of touch Hollywood is with Main Street America for a kids film. The animation is not done very well at all with different characters and drawings throughout the film.

Goblin Network AdThe worst part of this movie is that it’s about Igor’s wanting to compete with evil scientists to create the most evil monsters to terrorize the world. The entire film is about how a Frankenstein monster is good and the Igor and an evil scientist are wanting to make it evil to destroy the world. It’s really pretty sick and disturbing for kids because there is nothing fun about it. It’s too intense and the movie sucked. Not one of our kids liked it.

Newlyweds Chris and Lisa seem like they have the perfect marriage and now, with their new home in the exclusive community Lakeview Terrace, the perfect life as well, but things soon turn ugly in the posh neighborhood when they begin to receive threats from their…”

The Review
Lakeview Terrace is the new drama starring Samuel L. Jackson about a prejudice cop who terrorizes his next store neighbors who has a problem with the fact that the husband is white and his wife is African American. The story is very different than anything that has been done before, which makes it very interesting and unique and probably why we liked it.

Goblin Network AdBecky and I both liked the film. It’s very stressful, but it’s interesting and the acting by Samuel Jackson and the rest of the cast was great. The movie itself isn’t great, but the story is pretty wild and it will make for a good rental or worth seeing at the movies.

However, I would wait for the rental because the cost of getting into movies is way too much now given the economy. Also be forewarned, that this is rated PG-13, but the F word is used since Hollywood has lost its mind when it comes to language in the movies now a days.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Righteous Kill

Righteous KillBecky and I went to see Righteous Kill on Friday at the AMC theaters, in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at Righteous Kill describes the movie as follows:

“Jon Avnet’s thriller Righteous Kill stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as a pair of Big Apple police officers investigating a series of murders committed by a serial killer. Carla Gugino co-stars as a crime-scene investigator who has romantic ties to De Niro. 50 Cent, Donnie Wahlberg, Brian Dennehy, and John Leguizamo co-star. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide”

The Review
Righteous Kill is the new drama starring Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro as NYPD cops living on the edge of constant crime and corruption. The film focuses primarily on Deniro’s character having a breakdown of the justice system and becoming a vigilante cop who is willing to take matters into his own hands in dealing out justice. It’s rated R and is a graphic film, as you might expect, since criminals are being hunted down and murdered by a serial killer.

Goblin Network Ad Frankenstein the movie Righteous Kill has some plot twists, some graphic violence and sexual scenes and a few crazy characters. It’s definitely more of a drama than an action film and we both thought the movie was worth the trip if you are a Pacino and Deniro fan, but it’s for sure not a feel good movie. You won’t leave the theater, thinking “Wow, what a great flick, I’m so glad I saw that one.”, but that is mainly because it’s a dark film and not because of the acting or directing. It’s a pretty depressing movie showing how whacked out our society is and indirectly asks the audience the question whether or not it’s possible to turn a cop into a villain after years of constant exposure to the darkness.

Bottle Shock is an interesting Independent Film about the wine industry that is very well done, even if you don’t drink or are a fan of wine. It’s pretty darn funny with a wild mix of characters from different walks of life. I liked it because it is based on a true story and so did Becky.

Goblin Network AdBottle Shock is more about the challenges that face small business owners trying to compete in a global market than just about making wine. The movie shows that often times success is not just based on hard work, but a little bit of luck and taking chances. If you’ve ever owned or started a business, you should really appreciate this film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Bangkok Dangerous

Bangkok DangerousBecky and I went to see Bangkok Dangerous on Friday night at the AMC theaters, in Highlands Ranch, CO. The MSN movie website at Bangkok Dangerous describes the movie as follows:

“Original Bangkok Dangerous directors Danny and Oxide Pang return to familiar territory with this remake of their own popular 1999 thriller about a ruthless hitman (Nicolas Cage) who travels to Bangkok in order to carry out four crucial jobs. During the course of his missions, the triggerman falls in love with a pretty local girl while also forming a friendly bond with his young errand boy. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide”

The Review
Bangkok Dangerous is Nicolas Cage’s latest film as an action hero, but in this case the character is a hired assassin trying to become a good guy. A murderer who grows a conscience on his last mission to take out four evil men, only to find out that his last hit is a political hero to the Thai people. Will he pull the trigger and take out the good guy or go against the mobsters and fail in his mission? The plot thickens – kind of.

Goblin Network AdAs Bangkok Dangerous unfolds we learn the life that this “Hit Man” has lived has not been a pleasant one and he has no relationships outside of his work. Anyone who gets close to him ends up being killed by him, so it’s not exactly a feel good film. On the contrary, it’s pretty graphic and sad.

Bangkok Dangerous is your typical shoot em’ up action movie with shallow characters and a script that has been done too many times before. The twist is that he falls in love with a deaf woman, who won’t ask about his checkered past, but anyone can see that won’t work. It’s not a terrible movie, but certainly not worth the price of admission. If you’re a Nicolas Cage fan and you like gangster action movies this should be a good rental for you, but make sure your kids are in bed when you watch it because it’s quite graphic at times. Otherwise, you will find it a waste of time.
