I went to see the new movie Fantastic Four at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with Conroy and Corban last night.  The Fandango website at Fantastic Four describes the movie as follows…

“Brilliant scientist Reed Richards builds a device that allows users to teleport to an alternate dimension, but an experiment involving it goes wrong and leaves him and his three teammates with unusual superpowers. The quartet are then forced to work together to battle an enemy from their past…”

The Review:  The first Fantastic Four movie really sucked and this one we thought would be better.  Unfortunately it wasn’t, but for different reasons.  The story was actually really good and the acting was good, but the problem was how they put the film together.  It was actually a really great movie for the first half of the film, but then things fell apart.

They built up this really cool story and the next thing you know they threw the audience into this strange situation between the main characters and the evil character Doom.  They didn’t build it up to a major fight scene between the super hero’s and the villain.  The fight scene lasted about 10 minutes or less and it was really ridiculous.  It was as though they had to keep the movie to 90 minutes and they just got in a hurry to finish the film, which really wrecked it for everyone.  People leaving the movie had the same comments.  Needless to say, we were all disappointed because the ending was such an incredible let down.  Which is why we are suggesting you wait for the rental for this one.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows…

“Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his teammates reunite for this pulse-pounding sequel, in which they attempt to take down a secret international organization known as the Syndicate–highly skilled ex-IMF agents who are intent on bringing down their former outfit…”

The Review:  The Mission Impossible series has been pretty good overall.  The last one and the first one were really good with several in between that kind of sucked.  If you’re not a Tom Cruise fan like our son Conroy, you will probably still like this film.  As he put it, “The movie was great except that it had Tom Cruise.”, which was kind of funny.  Becky and I both thought this movie was great and so did our friends Mark and Maria.  Tom Cruise is a nut outside of his movies, but there is not arguing that he knows how to make a good movie with this franchise.  It’s going to be a blockbuster and he does all of his own stunts, which are pretty over the top most of the time.

There is plenty of action and suspense in this movie.  It’s action packed from start to finish, much like Ghost Protocol.  There is a hot chick in the movie as you would expect with these spy thriller type movies.  It’s like the Bourne and 007 series if you haven’t seen the previous Mission Impossible movies.  The acting and directing are good and the only complaint from most people is that it is way too long.  Personally though I liked that it was long because it didn’t leave you hanging, like many films today end up doing.  The bottom line is that this was definitely a Don’t Miss It.  It’s worth the price of admission, so go check it out.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Southpaw at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows…

The Review: I was thinking that a boxing film was probably going to suck, but the acting in this movie was really great.  Jake is probably going to win an award for his role in this movie and it was really well Directed.  In fact, this is one of the best movies we have seen in quite awhile with plenty of action and drama with a really good storyline.  The movie portrays the life of a boxer, who goes from a rags to riches life to having his world ripped out from under him and how he must overcome his emotions.  He has to battle back against numerous odds that are against him and decide what people he is going to trust and let back into his life.

The language is rough, so be prepared for that when you see it and it is violent as a boxing film.  It also shows the dangers of gun violence when ignorant people make bad choices with weapons.  This is a movie that will pull at your heart strings and it is a movie with characters that have plenty of heart.  We both thought it was definitely a Don’t Miss It and would recommend seeing it for sure.  We really enjoyed this movie and it was really well done.

The Review: There isn’t much to really say about this movie.  It is a kid’s movie and has some very funny characters, but the writing isn’t nearly as good as the Despicable Me films.  There are a few good jokes, but overall it’s not very funny.  It is definitely a great film for little kids, but I think most of the parents and older kids are going to be bored with this movie.

I guess we were expecting more from this movie and for it to be on the same level as the previous films, but it just didn’t deliver the way the previous movies did.  We all thought it was “okay” and definitely a rental.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Entourage this past Weekend in Orlando, FL at a Regal Cinema, while we were on vacation to Universal Studios, Orlando.  The Fandango website describes the movie as follows..

“In this raunchy satire based on the hit HBO series, young Hollywood A-lister Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his posse of best buds (Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon) negotiate the perils and pleasures of Hollywood life, with the help of superagent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) ~ Violet LeVoit, Rovi”

The Review: The description above describes this film perfectly with the keyword being raunchy satire and that’s exactly what this movie is on a mega scale.  The characters cuss like a bunch of teenagers, who just discovered swear words for the first time and there is a constant reference to sex and drugs.  It also has plenty of sex scenes that could make a porn star blush, but apparently this is how Hollywood rolls.  There are quite a few cameo appearances by a large number of actors and other famous people.   A few of them had me scratching my head though, like Andrew Dice Clay.  Really?  At times I thought I was watching a strange episode of The Celebrity Apprentice.  There are some big name people, who show up in the film as well, like the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.  I’m not sure who talked him into being in this film, but after he watched it he might have questioned what his agent was thinking at the time.  This movie didn’t fit his image, probably some other NFL players that have been in the news would have been a better fit.

We didn’t know that this was made from an HBO series that ran from like 2004 to 2011, which begs the question why they would wait another four years to make the movie?  Seems like most of their fan base would have moved on to Game of Thrones or some other HBO series.  Might have been the idea of a talent agent who talked some of these other characters to be in the movie.  The movie is really stupid, but it does have a few good laughs.  Some of the characters are pretty funny and the story could have actually been good, if it didn’t resort to living in the gutter constantly by trying to target an audience of teenagers.

It has a fairly complex storyline about a movie studio head who decides to give the reigns of a $100 million dollar film to an actor, who wants to direct his first movie.  The actor just happens to be his former client, when he was his agent, so there is a big conflict of interest and everyone thinks he’s nuts.  The character Ari Gold has to answer to his strange Texas investor played by Billy Bob Thornton and his spoiled brat son, along with the Chairman of the Studio and this whole decision is putting him in a position of losing his new job.  That’s a pretty funny story, but the delivery of the film was pretty screwed up.

This movie pretty much sucked, but I had a few good laughs, so I am going to rate it a rental.  Becky hated it and thought it was a total waste of time and she is probably right, but the acting was good, the story was good and there were a few good laughs.  I’m not sure who their audience is going to be on this one though, but maybe it will make a boatload of cash at the box office and we will be completely wrong when it wins an Oscar.  I doubt it though.

I went to see the new Mad Max: Fury Road movie last week with my 17 year old son Conroy at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO. The Fandango website at Mad Max: Fury Road describes the movie as follows…

The Review: Conroy wanted to see this movie the first time he saw the trailer.  I was a big fan of the Mad Max film The Road Warrior with Mel Gibson, so it was going to hard to live up to my expectations having seen that so many times back in the 1980’s.  It was a cult classic for teenagers at the time.

The first thing you have to realize about a Mad Max film is there is going to be plenty of gasoline, cars, explosions and gratuitous violence.  This film lived up to all of those expectations, but it also threw in Tom Hardy as Mad Max and Charlize Theron as a new character opposite of Mad Max going up against another diabolical character.  There is some really weird crap going on in this film, like overweight pregnant mutant women creating milk for mutant babies.  There is a strange cult that is built around violence and other gangs that are living on the road and committing murder and heinous crimes against humanity.  This is not a pleasant film about what mankind will eventually be like without morals or the rule of law for sure.

The evil characters reminded me of the characters in the film with Denzel Washington, The Book of Eli, that was also apocalyptic in nature.  The same vision of people who have no sense of right and wrong and you experience that in this movie too where it’s basically a dog eat dog world.  Mad Max though is an interesting character played by Hardy.

He doesn’t really say much in this movie, I think Theron’s character has more to say, which it was confusing as to whether this was supposed to be Mel Gibson’s character again as Max since he was so different.  As a fan of the first film, I think they should have had the kid with the boomerang in the first one when he was older and he assumed the name of Max, since that’s what Hardy’s character reminded me more of than Max.  The music didn’t fit the film at times and there was way too much going on most of the time creating a form of sensory overload. It was still entertaining for what it was though.

Okay, the end result is that Conroy and I both liked this movie, even though it’s over-the-top nuts and has some challenges and parts that are ridiculous.  We wouldn’t recommend it though for anyone though, this is a buyer beware movie.  You will either probably really like it or really hate it, so you might want to watch the first Road Warrior with Mel Gibson first and see if you like this story and genre of this character.  If you’re a Mad Max fan you are sure to like it and it will meet your expectations.

Becky and I went to see the new movie Pitch Perfect 2 last Friday at the AMC theater in Castle Rock, CO and our 13 year old daughter Bianca was there with her friends. The Fandango website at Pitch Perfect 2 describes the movie as follows…

The Review: First of all, Becky took me to two other movie theaters that were sold out to see this movie and when we got to Castle Rock it was sold out there as well, so we had to wait in line to see the film.  This is something we rarely have to do unless we are going to a sneak preview somewhere with free tickets.  I was just thinking to myself, and I posted on Facebook, that I had to stand in line to see Pitch Perfect 2 when Mad Max Fury Road was starting on the same night!  At any rate, we made it into the auditorium and I was among a room full of teenagers and Moms seeing this movie.  I think I was one of the only guys in the film, which I got since Mad Max was in another theater and I should have been there too.

This is a continuation of the first Pitch Perfect, which was a pretty funny movie.  If you didn’t see the first one you might want to watch that one first.  The story this time around wasn’t that great, but the music was good again.  The characters are well done, but there were too many characters in the background that really didn’t have much of a part in the film.  It was Directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also is a character in the movie, and she did a really good job directing the film and being in it at the same time.  There are some good jokes and cameo appearances by some expected people as well and they were good in the film.

Overall we really liked the movie and would have to rate it a Don’t Miss It even with some of the shortcomings of the story.  The acting is good, it’s funny and was entertaining.

We went to see the new movie True Story this past weekend at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with Conroy, Corban and Bianca. The Fandango website at True Story describes the movie as follows…

“This psychological thriller, based on true events, tells the story of a disgraced journalist (Jonah Hill) who’s drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an accused murderer (James Franco) who has assumed the journalists’ identity…”

The Review: We didn’t know what to expect going into this movie that is based on a true story.  The story was pretty amazing and really focused on two people, a murderer and a journalist.  I don’t want to give away the movie.  It moves very slow and methodical, with a great deal of interaction between the two main characters.  The murderer is really a sick and diabolical madman, who wants to take over the identify of the journalist and the journalist wants to be famous.

The acting in this film was great and the story was fascinating and yet disturbing, especially for the crimes he committed. It was very well done and you may either find it very good like I did or boring like Becky and Corban did.  Conroy, Bianca and I really liked it and we were happy for the outcome.  What I found most interesting about this movie was the very ending where the journalist lost his identity and the murderer assumed his identity.

The Review: This is an oddball comedy that is very similar to the movie The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.  The jokes and situations were almost the same as that film and it was about on the same level for entertainment, so it was funny at times.  There are some good laughs, but it’s very predictable and goofy.  The acting was okay and the story was pretty good, it was a bit different than expected.  The main characters worked well together and there were not a great deal of plot twists.

The movie should do well at the box office because of the Witherspoon and Vergara, but it was really more of a rental than one you want to take the time to go and see at the box office.  It just wasn’t that great of a movie, but it does have some good laughs.  We liked it overall, but would suggest you wait to rent it or for it to come out on Netflix.

I went to see the new movie Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend at the Regal Cinema’s in Lone Tree, CO with Corban. The Fandango website at Avengers: Age of Ultron describes the movie as follows…

The Review: Corban and I were excited to see this latest Avengers film and it was a sold out theater.  This Marvel Comic Book series has been wildly successful with serious star power and the stories are usually pretty good, much like reading a comic book. The villains are always over the top and more powerful than any one or even multiple of the Avengers, but for some reason they are far too easy to defeat.

In this film, there were a few things that I found that really annoyed me.  The first being is that Iron Man is indestructible, but his robot creations are easy to destroy that made absolutely no sense.  The second thing that was very disconcerting for me was one a new creation by Tony Stark and company as a super hero called himself “I AM”, which was the name that God Himself told Moses that He was and I found to be way beyond ridiculous.  I’m amazed nobody caught that when editing the film and the writers obviously put it in as a slam or joke on God or at the very least Christians, Jews and Muslims.

The movie overall was not that great though.  It had plenty of great special effects and a great deal of action.  They threw a bit too much drama into this one between the characters and it was boring at times.  We both liked it, but we didn’t love it.
