John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

Becky and Conroy went to see the new movie Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World a couple of weeks at the Hollywood Theaters in Littleton, CO.  The Movie Website at Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World describes the movie as follows…

“Set in a too-near future where time at once stands still and is slipping away forever, the writer/director explores what people will do and how they will feel when humanity’s end is near. A 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge (Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell); the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot. Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while his neighbor Penny (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who hasn’t…”

The Review
Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World
is a movie I thought looked pretty good from the movie trailer, but Becky and Conroy went to see it instead.  They both said it was terrible and not worth seeing.  Becky was really looking forward to seeing this film.  It looked funny, but instead it turned out to be a bummer flick with a very goofy story that she said was depressing.

I guess I made the right move to skip this one, so you may want to do the same.  Conroy and Becky both said that it wasn’t even worth renting, so they really didn’t like it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of People Like Us

Becky and I went to see the new movie People Like Us last week at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark & Maria.  I know, I’m a little behind on movie reviews ago, but only about a week right now.  I’m catching up.  The Fandango website at People Like Us describes the movie as follows…

“On the day his latest deal collapses, fast-talking salesman Sam (Chris Pine) receives the news that his father has died. Sam reluctantly returns home to settle his father’s estate. In the course of carrying out the man’s last wishes, Sam discovers the existence of a 30-year-old sister named Frankie (Elizabeth Banks) whom he never knew about. As Sam and Frankie get to know each other, Sam must re-examine both his perceptions about his family and his own life choices...”

The Review
People Like Us
is a great flick, plain and simple.  It’s a movie with heart and a great cast of actors and characters, plus it’s based on a true story.  The acting in this film is very good and it takes you on a journey into the life of a family that has struggled with relationships and being real with each other until the father dies and everyone has to come together.

I didn’t have great expectations going into this film, but it turned out to be a great drama.  It’s one of those movies that is a bit of a tear jerker and will pull at your emotions, while also showing the damage that divorce, infidelity, broken relationships and addictions can cause problems for people long term.  Bad decisions in life definitely have consequences, but there is the possibility for redemption and there is no excuse for not being honest and real with people, especially with your family.

We all really liked this film and thought it was Worth The Trip or a Don’t Miss It for sure.  It has a great message about forgiveness and the story is very well done.  If you don’t see it at the box office, you shouldn’t think twice about renting this one – it’s a very good movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I went to see the new movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter about a week ago at the Hollywood Cinemas in Littleton, CO.  The Fandango website at Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter describes the movie as follows…

“As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln witnesses the shocking death of his mother, leading him on a path to an ongoing war – and ultimately to the presidency – he chronicles in a hidden diary. The journal reveals the incredible story of a clandestine warrior who never stopped fighting for the country he led and the people he loved...”

The Review
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
is a goofy, graphic and somewhat ridiculous flick that definitely had lots of action and adventure.  It’s definitely not a movie for everyone, since it’s a hybrid between a science fiction, horror and action movie rolled into one that is more like a zombie movie than a vampire movie.  These movies always fail because initially it’s almost impossible to kill a vampire or a zombie and by the end of the film the main character could take them out with a bb gun, but in this case it was his axe.

The story was actually pretty good from the standpoint of a group of age old vampires were feeding on people for their meal ticket and helped bring about the American Civil War to try to take over the United States.  I guess that’s the reason why President Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the main character and the author wanted a catchy title to sell more books, but it kind of wrecked the movie and the story in my opinion.  It was just way too far fetched since the movie was already lacking in the believability department and  had me scratching my head too many times saying, “Okay?”.

I couldn’t talk Becky into seeing this movie with me.  She had zero interest in it at all.  I went with a buddy of mine and he loved it.  I thought it was okay for what it was, so I would have to rate it a Rental at best, if you like horror action movies with somewhat ridiculous plots.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Brave

Becky and I went to see the movie Brave tonight at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at Brave describes the movie as follows…

“Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In ‘Brave,’ a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts…”

The Review
Brave
is a great Pixar flick that reminded me quite a bit of the film How To Train Your Dragon with a Celtic theme in ancient times.  It’s about a young princess who is not anything like the traditional Disney princesses.  The story is very well done and it deals with the relationship between a young princess and her family, in particular her Mom and her desire to change her fate.

There is plenty of action and drama in this movie.  It has a great message about how trying to change your fate can have consequences.  Especially, if you make decisions out of anger and allow pride to get in the way of relationships.  I don’t want to give away the movie, but it’s really great and we all loved it.

This is definitely a movie that you will want to go check out.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Rock of Ages

Becky and I went to see the new movie Rock of Ages yesterday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at Rock of Ages describes the movie as follows…

“A small-town girl and a big-city boy find their fates intersecting on the Sunset Strip, riding a wave of romance through the height of the “hair metal” scene as the off-Broadway musical rocks its way to the big screen courtesy of choreographer-turned-director Adam Shankman (A Walk to Remember, Hairspray). Arriving in Hollywood with stars in her eyes, Sherrie (Julianne Hough) meets Drew (Diego Boneta), and together they plunge headlong into the local rock scene. Meanwhile, as Sherrie struggles to stay afloat in a churning sea of rock ‘n’ roll excess, she gets swept off her feet by audacious rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, and Bryan Cranston co-star in a movie featuring music by Journey, Def Leppard, Poison, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Foreigner, Joan Jett, and REO Speedwagon...”

The Review
Rock of Ages
is a wild musical that I had zero interest in seeing.  I’m not much of a fan of musicals, but Becky talked me into seeing it since it had music from the 80’s and she thought it looked good.

It turns out that Becky was right and I was wrong on this one.  As one guy coming out of the movie said, “I’m going to have to turn in my Man Card, after seeing that movie because I really liked it.”, which I thought was pretty funny.  The movie was good though and the music was great, if you’re a fan of 80’s music.  If you’re not a fan of 80’s music then you probably won’t like this film.

The movie has a pretty good story about a girl who goes to California in search of her dream of becoming a singer and she meets a guy who wants to be a rock star.  They both work at a famous night club that a zealous woman wants to get closed down, which makes for some funny scenes.  The characters in the movie are very funny and it’s really well done, but it does have quite a bit of sex, alcohol (instead of drugs) and rock and roll.  However, that’s what you would expect from this film.  Tom Cruise was really good in this movie, playing a successful rock star, even if you’re not a Tom Cruise fan.

It’s not going to be a film for everyone though for sure, but most of the people I spoke with after the movie really liked it.  I thought it was worth the price of admission and Becky rated it a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Prometheus

Becky and I went to see the new movie Prometheus on Friday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at Prometheus describes the movie as follows…

“Ridley Scott, director of ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ returns to the genre he helped define. With ‘Prometheus,’ he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race...”

The Review
Prometheus
is a classic Sci-Fi horror flick that is much like the original film Alien, but not nearly as good as the original.  I had no idea that it was a prequel to the movie Alien by Ridley Scott until the very end of the movie.  The story is pretty good, in that you have a bunch of scientists looking for the “creator” of the human race based on cave dwelling paintings and they set out to find their origin.  The story is good because you could definitely see scientists doing this in their religious zeal to prove the history of mankind.

Once they reach the planet, the team discovers that their hopes are dashed because the advanced alien species they have come to admire has created biological weapons that has destroyed the the planet they are visiting and created a new deadly mutant life form.  It gets pretty nuts from there and is very much like the original Alien movie, almost more like a remake in some ways than a prequel.

Becky absolutely hated this film, but she doesn’t like Sci-Fi movies anyway, so that was not a surprise.  She probably would have left the movie though, she disliked it that much.  I on the other hand liked it.  I liked the original Alien movie though and this was quite a bit like it.  It’s not a great flick, but it’s pretty good.  I rated it Worth The Trip, if you like the Alien series, but if you didn’t you should take Becky’s advice on this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Snow White And The Huntsman

Becky and I took Conroy and Corban to see the movie Snow White And The Huntsman at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO yesterday.  The Moviefone website at Snow White And The Huntsman describes the movie as follows…

“In the epic action-adventure ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’ Kristen Stewart (‘Twilight’) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the one girl threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, ‘Thor’) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power…”

The Review
Snow White And The Huntsman
is a new adaptation of the famous story Snow White by the Brother’s Grimm.  It stars Charlize Theron as the evil dark queen and Kristen Stewart as Snow White, along with the Huntsman played by the guy from the movie Thor.  This rendition has a few twists from previous stories, like the famous Walt Disney cartoon, but it’s very well done.

The movie has plenty of action and suspense.  Charlize Theron is awesome in this movie as the evil queen and all the acting is well done.  It has a little bit of that Lord of the Rings element with fairies, trolls, dwarves and strange forest creatures.  The story though is a classic, complete with the magic mirror on the wall, but the way the queen maintains her youth is with serious dark magic and murder.

I don’t want to spoil this movie, but it’s really good and very well done.  We all liked it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of What To Expect When You’re Expecting

Becky and I went to see What To Expect When You’re Expecting on Saturday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at What To Expect When You’re Expecting describes the movie as follows…

The challenges of impending parenthood turn the lives of five couples upside-down. Two celebrities are unprepared for the surprise demands of pregnancy; hormones wreak havoc on a baby-crazy author, while her husband tries not to be outdone by his father, who’s expecting twins with his young trophy wife; a photographer’s husband isn’t sure about his wife’s adoption plans; a one-time hook-up results in a surprise pregnancy for rival food-truck owners...”

The Review
What To Expect When You’re Expecting
is based on the popular book that just about every woman who is pregnant reads.  It’s like the movies New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day where they jump around following a number of people in different situations throughout the film.  In this case, there are several couples who are expecting their first child and they are all going through a number of experiences during their first pregnancy.

I noticed that it was mostly women in this movie, but it was the men who were laughing the most in this film.  I think this movie brought back too many memories for women who had been pregnant before.  It’s not a super funny movie, but there are some very funny parts and the acting is good.

Unfortunately, there are too many stories going on at one time.  The film should have been made with at most three stories, instead of trying to figure out every possible scenario from a couple to have a baby, from having twins to adopting in Africa.  It was a bit over-the-top with so many stories going on at once.  It also jumped from being a a comedy to being far too serious of a drama at times.

I liked this movie more than Becky did, which surprised me, but it’s still getting a rating of a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Chernobyl Diaries

Becky and I went to see Chernobyl Diaries on Friday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at Chernobyl Diaries describes the movie as follows…

Chernobyl Diaires is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, ‘Paranormal Activity’. The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an “extreme tour” guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...”

The Review
Chernobyl Diaries
is a movie that had a really cool plot about a group of kids who go on vacation and decide to take an extreme adventure tour that went awry.  The story is pretty wild in that they end up going on a tour of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the former Soviet Union and they are not supposed to be there.

It’s one of those movies where you could see a group of young people actually making a terrible mistake on vacation that could cost them their lives.  That’s what makes the movie interesting since you will say, “Yeah, I could see people doing that.”.  Beyond that though, the film is really bad.  It’s a bit like The Blair Witch Project, where the kid’s go to find out about the witch that is real. In this case, it’s Mutant Zombies, of course.

The acting isn’t bad, but it isn’t good either.  The movie is totally predictable, until the end and the ending really sucked, so there really wasn’t anything good about this movie.  Which isn’t surprising since it’s the same guy who did Paranormal Activity and he kind of followed the same format.

This is at best a rental, but we have to say it’s beyond that and a flat out Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of MIB 3

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie Men In Black 3 at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO yesterday.  The Moviefone website at Men In Black 3 describes the movie as follows…

“In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner…”

The Review
MIB 3
is the third installment of the Men in Black series with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent J and Agent K fighting aliens in their top secret Men in Black organization.  This time around, Will’s character, Agent J, has to go back in time to prevent the planet from being destroyed by the most wicked of aliens and prevent Agent K’s pre-mature death.

The film is much like the previous Men in Black movies, almost the same as all of them with crazy aliens, high-powered weapons and stopping a diabolical plan.  It’s still done very well and the acting is good and the story is fun.  Josh Brolin is fantastic in this movie, playing a younger Tommy Lee Jones and it’s uncanny much they looked alike.  It’s an entertaining movie for sure, but I think it’s probably worn out the MIB series now.

We all liked the movie and thought it was worth the price of admission, except for Becky who was bored with it, but she’s not a big Science Fiction fan anyway.  If you’re an MIB fan, you’ll like this flick, otherwise you might want to wait for the rental.  The kids had never seen any of the MIB’s before and they really liked this movie.
