John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Dictator

Becky and I went to see The Dictator last week at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Moviefone website at The Dictator describes the movie as follows…

“Comic Sacha Baron Cohen re-teams with director Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) for this satirical tale of an oppressive, democracy-hating dictator and a goatherder (both played by Cohen) whose misadventures in America lead to a series of outrageous culture clashes. Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, and Curb Your Enthusiasm’s J.B. Smoove co-star…”

The Review
The Dictator
is a film that could have been really funny, if the guy who did the movie had any talent.  All I can figure is that he has friends in Hollywood throwing him money to make lame movies like this one.

This movie is done by the same guy who did Borat and we should have skipped this one too.  This film was raunchy, childish, ridiculous and stupid.  Do you need more adjectives to describe this movie?

Let me put it to you this way.  Jeff Foxworthy could create a whole new line of jokes describing people who like this movie.  “If you think that raccoon’s are a vegetable, you will probably like The Dictator”, “If you think that the movie Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus should have won an Academy Award for Best Picture, you will probably like The Dictator.”  You get the picture?

This movie was terrible.  It’s quite possibly the worst movie we’ve seen this year – for now.  I’ve heard better jokes from our kids when they were in Elementary school than this movie had and they weren’t disgusting.  It’s getting a Don’t Bother from us.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Battleship

Becky and I went to see Battleship last week before we ran the Colfax Marathon downtown at the Regal Cinemas in Denver, CO.  The Fandango website at Battleship describes the movie as follows…

“Hasbro’s strategic board game gets a sci-fi facelift with this Universal Pictures production from director Peter Berg. The action will pit a small fleet of naval ships against an alien force intent on enriching Earth’s valuable assets to ensure their survival. Taylor Kitsch (Wolverine) and True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard star alongside Liam Neeson, Rihanna, and Brooklyn Decker…”

The Review
Battleship
is based on the popular game we’ve all played as children where we would say, “You sunk by Battleship” and in this movie it’s the U.S. Navy against an elite alien invasion.  It’s a fun film with plenty of action and mediocre acting, but lots of things blowing up like the Transformer films.  The story is pretty good, until they go off the wall with the deployment of a retired Battleship to fight the space invaders, which was totally whacky with a bunch of old dudes running a retired ship.

This movie is not going to win any awards, but it’s better than watching something on television.  It’s a huge promo for the Navy and since I was in the Naval Reserves and I’ve been on a few ships, I had a good time with the film.  It was fun to watch and I’ve often figured if we were to ever discover aliens, like Fallen Angels, it’s not going to be good for mankind.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Dark Shadows

Becky and I went to see the movie Dark Shadows a couple weeks ago at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO with Conroy, Corban and Bianca.  The Fandango website at Dark Shadows describes the movie as follows…

“In 18th-century Maine, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) presides over the town of Collinsport. A rich and powerful playboy, Barnabas seals his own doom when he breaks the heart of a witch named Angelique (Eva Green). Angelique turns Barnabas into a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas escapes from his tomb and finds 1972 Collinsport a very different place. His once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of his family have fared little better…”

The Review
Dark Shadows
is a movie that is based on the 1970’s television series with the same name that I actually grew up watching with my older sister Barbara.  We used to watch that goofy and creepy Soap Opera in the afternoons after school on a black and white television with the famous Barnabas Collins.  When I first saw the popular movie Twilight, I thought the author had knocked off the vampire character in that series, who had missed his long love and fell in love with a mortal.

In this rendition, the vampire is played by Johnny Depp who is really great in this quirky dark comedy, even having a well done old English accent.  All the characters in this flick are really good, including the gardener, the witch, the doctor, the daughter and of course Elizabeth Collins played by the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer.

The story is really good and very funny.  It’s a bit strange like the Addam’s Family, but it’s built from a Soap Opera, so there is sexual content and it’s rated PG-13.  So be aware of this, if you bring your kids to this film, since you could be uncomfortable as a parent for a few scenes and the main character is a blood sucking vampire.  There are a couple scenes that they could have left out, like one with the daughter morphing into a creature near the end of the film that was lame.

We all liked this film though.  It’s a Johnny Depp, Tim Burton deal, so be prepared for bizarre.  I’m rating it a Don’t Miss It, but it’s not for everyone for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Avengers

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie The Avengers at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO last week.  The Fandango website at The Avenger describes the movie as follows…

“Marvel Studios presents ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins…”

The Review
The Avengers
is a great comic book super hero action flick movie.  It’s a massive thrill ride from beginning to end.  The characters are many that we’ve seen before such as Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor and Captain America, plus a few more to create the amazing team of Avengers.

The movie is very well done and super exciting.  It opened up with the greatest box office opening ever in the United States with over $200 million in ticket sales the first weekend, so many of you reading this have already seen this film.  What I liked about it is how true to the comic book genre it is.  It’s like watching an actual comic book come to life with great characters, fantastic villains, a good story with great lines for the characters and super chemistry between the actors.

This movie is definitely one of the best blockbusters of the year and many people will be seeing it multiple times.  There were be several clips that you have to stay for after the credits, like most Marvel movies.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Raven

Becky and I went to see the movie, The Raven at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO this past Weekend.  The Fandango website at The Raven describes the movie as follows…

“The macabre and lurid tales of Edgar Allan Poe are vividly brought to life – and death – in this stylish, gothic thriller starring John Cusack as the infamous author. When a madman begins committing horrific murders inspired by Poe’s darkest works, a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) joins forces with Poe in a quest to get inside the killer’s mind in order to stop him from making every one of Poe’s brutal stories a blood chilling reality…”

The Review
The Raven
is a movie about the original Master of Horror, Edgar Allan Poe, and how a madman has taken his books and decided to bring his horror stories to life.  This time though Mr. Poe is right in the middle of his scary stories as people he knows are being murdered in the most grisly of ways.  They are being killed the same way as in his horror stories and he has to find clues to prevent the next murders from taking place and stop the killer.

The movie is very gruesome and that’s definitely our biggest complaint.  It’s very disturbing and will make you jump at times and cringe at other times because the murderer in this film is so diabolical.  What is creepy is how terrible Edgar Allan Poe stories were back in his day.  There are not many writers today, who can match his ability to create fear in death, like being buried alive or cut in two.  His stories border on the demonic and illustrate quite well the depravity of man.

The Raven will make you want to close you eyes at times, which Becky did.  What saved the movie is the story because it’s quite interesting with plenty of plot twists and turns as the main character and the police detective try to find this insane murderer before he can perform his heinous crimes again.

I don’t like to admit that Becky and I both liked it because it was so disturbing, but unfortunately we both thought it was worth the price of admission simply because the story was fascinating.  Be prepared to close your eyes though during the gruesome parts of the film though because they are horrible, which is why it’s a horror movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Becky and I took our children to see the movie, The Pirates! Band of Misfits at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO a couple weeks ago.  The Fandango website at The Pirates! Band of Misfits  describes the movie as follows…

“Accompanied by his ragtag crew, an enthusiastic pirate captain (Hugh Grant) sails the high seas and dreams of besting his bitter rivals, Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek), in a quest to win the coveted title of Pirate of the Year. The captain’s quest takes him and his comrades from the exotic shores of Blood Island to Victorian London’s foggy streets…”

The Review
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
is a cute film that is like the little clay figures of the popular Wallace and Gromit characters.  It’s a funny movie, a kids movie of course with some adult humor.  There were a couple swear words in the movie, which was surprising for a children’s movie.

The story was actually very well done and kept our interest.  The characters are pretty funny, but it’s not for really little kids.  The humor is a bit too adult at times for most really young audiences and they will probably be bored. We all liked it though.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Lockout

Becky and I went to see the movie, Lockout at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO a couple weeks ago.  The Fandango website at Lockout describes the movie as follows…

“A man is wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. He’s offered his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates…”

The Review
Lockout
can best be described as a remake of Escape from New York in outer space.  The character played by Guy Pearce has the same personality as the infamous “Snake Plissken” from the 1980’s.  His character has to save the President’s daughter in this installment instead of the President himself, like the 1980’s version.

I don’t think this movie was promoted as a remake, but it is just way too similar not to be a remake.  The original with Kurt Russell was way better by the way, even if it was filmed a movie from 1981.  Lockout isn’t a great movie by any stretch, it’s an action movie with no real chemistry between the characters.  It’s definitely not worth the price of admission, but it would make for an okay rental.  It’s pretty violent, so be aware of that if you decide to watch it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Safe

Becky and I went to see the movie, Safe at the Hollywood Cinemas in Littleton, CO a couple weeks ago with our friends Mark & Maria.  The Fandango website at Safe describes the movie as follows…

“A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit, Luke Wright lives a numbing life of routine beatings and chump change…until the day he blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving Luke to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed…”

The Review
Safe
is an action movie starring Jason Statham that we all thought would be an exciting and fun movie to watch together.  We all like Jason Statham and his action type flicks and this movie sounded like a pretty good plot about a young genius girl who needs to be protected from evil gangsters who want to use her talents.

Unfortunately, this movie was terrible.  Once the body count starting going upward, it never stopped.  It got to the point of being totally ridiculous and annoying.

In fact, after the movie we left the theater and Mark said “Bam, Bam, Bam” and everyone leaving the theater started laughing.  It was non-stop shooting and killing to the point that we should have all just got up and left, instead of painfully staying to the end.

All of us rated it a Don’t Bother.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Chimpanzee

Becky and I took the kids to see the movie, Chimpanzee at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO a couple weeks ago.  The Fandango website at Chimpanzee describes the movie as follows…

“Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with ‘Chimpanzee,’ a new True Life Adventure introducing an adorable baby chimp named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom and the group’s savvy leader — navigates the complex territory of the forest…”

The Review
Chimpanzee
is a Disneynature documentary that took a number of year to make and it has some very fascinating elements to it.  However, you spend the entire movie following the life of one chimp named Oscar through the forest.

What makes the movie pretty cool is also what made it boring.  The film was shot in the Rain Forest and rather than showing some of the other animals that live there, they only showed the baby chimpanzee and his family.  It’s not a bad movie, but it could have been and should have been much better than it was for sure.

Becky liked it more than the kids and I did.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Lucky One

Becky and I went to see the movie, The Lucky One at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO a  week ago.  The MovieFone website at The Lucky One describes the movie as follows…

“Zac Efron stars as a soldier whose obsession with a photograph leads him on a lucky streak and unlikely romance. Scott Hicks directs the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel. Taylor Schilling co-stars….”

The Review
The Lucky One
is a major chick flick starring Zac Efron and it’s written by the same guy who wrote The Notebook and Message In A Bottle.  If you remember how slow those movies were, this one is just as slow.  It moves really slow and the guy in the movie is way too perfect, so it’s completely ridiculous.

The story starts out pretty good with this Marine who survives his Tours in Iraq and Afghanistan when he finds a photo of a beautiful girl, only to have his buddies get killed.  He decides that if he makes it back from the battlefield that he’s going to track this woman down and thank her.  It turns out that he meets her and starts working for her, then becomes her Hero.

The movie has all kinds of problems with it.  It’s boring, it’s slow, it’s contrived and ridiculous.  The people in the film are good looking and have good chemistry, the acting is good, but there are plots within the plot, like the jealous ex-husband and their son who is a geek.  Then you have the ex-husband being a cop, only because his Daddy is the Mayor.  The movie is just kind of goofy.

I thought Becky would like it, but she didn’t either and thought it was dull.  It’s not often we agree with the Critics on films, but they got this one right.  It’s a rental at best and I would rate it a Don’t Bother.
