John & Becky’s Movie Review of Elvis & Nixon

elvisandnixonBecky and I went to see the movie Elvis & Nixon at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO today, after running a marathon. The Fandango website at Elvis & Nixon describes the movie as follows…

“This comedy depicts the real-life 1970 meeting between rock star Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) and then-president Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey) at the White House, which led to an iconic photo of the two men shaking hands. During the meeting, Elvis offers his services as an undercover agent in the war on drugs. Directed by Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship)…”

The Review:  Elvis & Nixon is a strange Independent Film about the true story of when Elvis Presley met President Richard Nixon and took a famous photo together.  The film is really bizarre as it shows how crazy Elvis Presley was and how man in power respond to situations that can benefit themselves personally.  The acting in this movie is brilliant, even if there isn’t a great deal to the story other than taking you through the whacky world of Elvis Presley wanting to be an undercover agent to help stop drugs and communism from taking over the United States.  That is what makes the film really funny.

Kevin Spacey is great as President Nixon and although Michael Shannon doesn’t look like Elvis, he played the part of The King of Rock and Roll extremely well.  It shows how eccentric Elvis Presley was and how it was such an iconic era in American History for Elvis to be able to actually gain an audience with Richard Nixon to achieve his goal.  Becky and I both liked the film and thought it was entertaining and actually fascinating more than anything.  We thought it was Worth The Trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Sing Street

singstreetbandBecky and I went to see the movie Sing Street at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO last night.  The Fandango website at Sing Street describes the movie as follows…

“After his parents’ money woes force him to transfer schools, shy Dublin teenager Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) finds himself as an outsider at the rough-and-tumble new academy. One day, he spots the trendy Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and unable to think of a reason to talk to her, asks her to star in the first music video for his band. She agrees, but Conor is in a bind given the fact that his band does not yet exist…”

The Review:  Sing Street is a quirky movie about an Irish teenager who is struggling with his school and friends to find his identity.  He decides to start a band because he wants to impress an older girl in his neighborhood, but he has no experience in music.  He recruits some friends and forms a band and then starts making music videos and writing songs.

The story shows his life with his family and his brother and it’s as much about him and his brother as it is about the boy himself. His brother is a stoner and his family is dysfunctional, but his brother keeps encouraging him that he can be a singer in a band and be successful.  The film is actually really good even though it’s a low budget production, we thought it had a great deal of heart and it was enjoyable as well as entertaining.

Becky and I both liked this movie and it has some good music from the 1980’s, some good jokes and shows the challenges of teenagers growing up in Ireland as poor kids with little opportunity.  We thought it was Worth The Trip and will definitely make for a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Meet The Blacks

meettheblacksBecky and I went to see the movie Meet The Blacks at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last night with our friends Mark and Maria.  The Fandango website at Meet The Blacks describes the movie as follows…

“After obtaining a great deal of money, the patriarch (Mike Epps) of a black family decides they should move from Chicago to a posh neighborhood in Beverly Hills. However, they are soon terrorized by home intruders who want them out of the affluent community in this comedic spoof of the Purge films….”

The Review:  Meet The Blacks was a film that we really knew nothing about and found out at the last minute that it was a comedy.  It’s about an African American family who’s last name is Black and the Father comes into some money from an illegal drug deal in Chicago and move his family to Beverly Hills.  It just so happens that right after they move into their new house, it is the night of the Purge, another stupid movie that we have never seen about crime including murder being legal one night a year.

The writers of Meet The Blacks must have thought the idea for The Purge was stupid as we do since they made this film to make fun of it.  Unfortunately, it just turned into another bad movie.  The whole movie is filled with people using the “n” word as though it’s a term of endearment and it is filled with inappropriate and racist jokes.  There are a few good laughs, but it’s really like a horror movie comedy and just terrible.  Becky fell asleep for most of it and Mark and I walked out shaking our heads about how stupid it was.  Maria didn’t like it and there isn’t really much more to say about it.

This is definitely a Don’t Bother in our opinion.  It was just too stupid and wouldn’t be worth watching even if it was on t.v. for free.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Deadpool

deadpoolBecky and I went to see the movie Deadpool at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last week.  The Fandango website at Deadpool describes the movie as follows…

“In this irreverent spin on the superhero genre, mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) agrees to participate in a top-secret experiment after learning that he has terminal cancer. When the procedure leaves him with advanced healing powers and a disfigured face, he reinvents himself as a wisecracking, spandex-clad antihero known as Deadpool, and seeks revenge on those responsible…”

The Review:  Deadpool is a crazy undead comic book character that makes fun of other comic book heros as he goes on a quest to get vengeance on the person who turned him into an undead.  His life has been destroyed after discovering that he had incurable cancer and signs up to get fixed by a secret organization that creates mutants.  He ends up having a falling out with the company that has agreed to give him mutant powers and the movie is a wild ride into his personal vendetta.

Ryan Reynolds plays the Deadpool character and he is really great in this role.  This movie is extremely violent with plenty of sex, bad language and violence, but it works for this film.  It’s definitely rated R and it’s not your typical Marvel film by any stretch that are mainly PG-13.  It’s much more like Daredevil on Netflix that is really violent and at times completely over-the-top.  Nevertheless, it is extremely well done and fun to watch, if you can get past the extreme violence.  I actually saw this film twice and I liked it both times, but I expected the violence.  The second time we went with our friends Mark and Maria and Mark liked it, but Maria didn’t like it as much.

Becky and I both liked it and I thought it was a Don’t Miss It, but I don’t expect everyone to like it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice

batmansupermanBecky and I went to see the movie Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO last week. The Fandango website at Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice describes the movie as follows…

“Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) clash over differing philosophies about what kind of heroism is needed to protect the world, while the public they’re defending is becoming increasingly mindful of the damage that superheroes and masked vigilantes cause. However, the duo are soon forced to confront an even greater threat created by nefarious billionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Directed by Zack Snyder…”

The Review:  Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice looked like it was going to be terrible.  We actually laughed about it when we saw the Previews and I was not thrilled about Ben Affleck replacing Christian Bale as Batman after the success of the Batman series, while still keeping Henry Cavill as Superman.  It turned out that was the main shortcoming of this movie, but Ben Affleck still did a good job as Batman.  The story and the film was actually really well done and the characters were entertaining.

This is a movie that is about entertainment.  Batman and Superman are not real life people, so the critics have been bashing the film as though this genre is real or something.  It doesn’t make any sense since the people and the places are not real, it’s a comic book story and it delivers as an entertaining film.  We went with our son Corban and his friend Logan, who is an avid comic book junkie and they both really liked it.  The movie introduces Wonder Woman as well as the character Doom as the ultimate villain for the three super hero’s.

Becky and I both liked it to and thought it was a Don’t Miss It..

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of 10 Cloverfield Lane

10cloverfieldlaneBecky and I went to see the movie 10 Cloverfield Lane at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO last week. The Fandango website at 10 Cloverfield Lane describes the movie as follows…

“Following a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) awakens in the basement fallout shelter of a conspiracy-crazed man (John Goodman) who claims to have saved her from the wreckage of the crash. He also informs her that a chemical attack has devastated the surrounding area, rendering the outside world uninhabitable…”

The Review:  10 Cloverfield Lane was a movie that we really didn’t know what to expect.  It was Produced by J.J. Abrams and it is a movie that is extremely suspenseful similar to an Alfred Hitchcock film.  It doesn’t take long for the film to start creating suspense.  The main character who is a young woman, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, finds herself in the basement of a man who seems like he is crazy, played by John Goodman.  You wonder if she has been captured or if he has saved her life after a car accident.

Before you know it she discovers another man is living there too, who helped build the shelter that they are living in and he seems completely normal, but they are both concerned about the guy they are living with who seems crazy.  The suspense continues to build as you discover that there may have been a chemical attack and this strange man may have actually saved their lives.

The suspense keeps building as the woman and the man plan their escape from the shelter to go for help and it just gets more and more wild.  Eventually, the suspense comes to a climax and the thrill ride turns a bit insane as a horror movie.  It goes from being a thriller to more of a horror film and gets more intense.  Our son Conroy and his friend Lance went with Becky and I and we all really liked it.

Becky and I both liked it and thought it was a Don’t Miss It, but be prepared that it’s pretty wild and it is disturbing at times and over-the-top toward the end of the movie, but they tied it together really well.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Zootopia

zootopiaBecky and I went to see the movie Zootopia at the UA Theaters in Greenwood Village, CO on Sunday. The Fandango website at Zootopia describes the movie as follows…

“In a city inhabited by anthropomorphic animals who have abandoned traditional predator/prey roles in favor of civilized coexistence, uptight rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) is forced to work with charismatic fox con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to crack a major case involving the mysterious disappearance of some carnivorous citizens. But when a few of the missing critters reappear, having reverted to pre-enlightenment savagery, it exposes existing anti-carnivore prejudice among the city’s herbivores that threatens to damage the fabric of their diverse metropolis…”

The Review:  Zootopia looked like a really stupid movie that we decided to go and see on a Sunday afternoon with Corban and Bianca since we still are suckers for animated kid’s movies.  The story though was really well done, the animation was great and it was extremely entertaining.  There was plenty of adult humor and lots of laughs for the kids.  This movie is doing extremely well at the box office and it should because it is really a great flick.

The character of the bunny was really funny and it is about how she wants to be the first bunny police officer in the big city of Zootopia that is dominated by the carnivores.  It has an element of political correctness to it, but overall it’s pretty funny and entertaining, in the same way as Ice Age did in this genre a few years back.

Becky and I both liked it and thought it was a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of London Has Fallen

londonhasfallenBecky and I went to see the movie London Has Fallen at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last week. The Fandango website at London Has Fallen describes the movie as follows…

“In this sequel to the 2013 action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, a terrorist plot unfolds in London as a number of politicians gather for the funeral of the British prime minister. A Secret Service agent (Gerald Butler), the U.S. president (Aaron Eckhardt), and an MI-6 operative (Charlotte Riley) must work together to stop the terrorists from assassinating the world’s leaders and destroying the city’s landmarks….”

The Review:  London Has Fallen is a sequel to the first action thriller Olympus Has Fallen that was an incredibly far fetched action film.  This is the second incredibly far fetched film, only now it’s gone from the White House to London being torn apart by terrorists and the President of the United States needing to be protected by the hero.

This is another over-the-top action film that has plenty of action, but lacks plenty of substance.  The story is so predictable and it’s just hard to watch because the odds of success are ridiculous.  The movie is entertaining at times, but maybe we are just spoiled from watching so many far fetched action movies where the “hero” of the film has skills like a Super Hero that it’s just not believable.  That was the problem with this film for us.  At times it was entertaining and other times you were thinking, “There is no way they could have survived that and walked away.“.

Becky and I both thought this film was a Rental, so when it comes out at the rental box or available for download it would be worth watching then.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Race

raceposter1Becky and I went to see the movie Race at the AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO last Friday night. The Fandango website at Race describes the movie as follows…

“This drama based on true events focuses on legendary black athlete Jesse Owens (Stephan James) and his inspiring journey to overcome racism at home and abroad, culminating in his triumphant track-and-field performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics under the tutelage of gruff Ohio State coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis). At the same time, Owens also contends with a rivalry with German competitor Carl “Luz” Long (David Kross), while Olympic committee members Jeremiah Mahoney (William Hurt) and Avery Brundage (Jeremy Irons) deal with Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels (Barnaby Metschurat) and his desire to make the Games a celebration of Aryan supremacy…”

The Review:  RACE is the true story about Jesse Owens, who was an amazing Olympic athlete who competed in the German Olympics under the Hitler regime.  The movie shows the obstacles that he endured as an African American in America and then going to Europe to compete in the Olympic games.  It shows the evils of prejudice and the amazing endurance and true grit of men like Jesse Owens who were true overcomers.  The film also shows how his coach, Larry Snyder, pushed him to keep his focus on running instead of getting sidetracked by the naysayers and obstacles he was facing at the time.

Jesse Owens was a true American Hero and this movie is very important for people to see, even from an historical standpoint, but also because it shows the importance of standing up in the face of evil and overcoming adversity.  It’s a great movie!  The man had mad skills and was an amazing runner.

The acting is really good, along with the directing.  One element that I really appreciated is that it showed the flaws of Mr. Owens that are common among many men, when fame, power and money come into their lives.  It showed how at times he had very little integrity and at other times he was a great friend.  The movie didn’t try to make excuses for his sins, but instead showed how he had to humble himself and focus on the prize and becoming a champion.

Becky and I both though this film was a Don’t Miss It for sure, so put it on  your list of movies to see.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Eddie The Eagle

eddietheeagleBecky and I went to see the movie Eddie The Eagle at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO on Tuesday night. The Fandango website at Eddie The Eagle describes the movie as follows…

“Sports biopic of Michael “Eddie the Eagle” Edwards (Taron Egerton), whose participation in the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary marked the first time a Brit had ever competed in the ski-jumping event. Edwards trains as a ski jumper under the tutelage of a hard-drinking former champ (Hugh Jackman), and eventually finds fame as a lovable loser who’s just trying his best…”

The Review:  Eddie The Eagle is the true story of a guy that everyone counted out and didn’t want to give a chance.  He was the true definition of an underdog, who had the dream of becoming an Olympian from the time he was a child.  He ends up becoming a ski jumper of all things and he’s the least likely person to succeed, but his ambitions are different than most, along with his determination.

This is such a great and inspirational movie that is very entertaining.  We definitely want to encourage you to go and watch Eddie goes on his journey to try to become an Olympian and beat the odds.  This film was a Don’t Miss It for sure.
