John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Identical

theidenticalBecky and I went to see The Identical on Friday at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at The Identical describes the movie as follows…

“One man’s passion for music leads him to question his faith and his identity following a shocking revelation about the family past in this musical drama set in the 1950, just as rock ‘n’ roll began to dominate the airwaves. All Ryan Wade (Blake Rayne) ever wanted was to make music. Ryan’s dreams of performing on the stage before thousands of screaming fans are seemingly dashed, however, when his preacher father (Ray Liotta) and devout mother (Ashley Judd) pressure him to join the ministry. Later, with the support of his wife (Erin Cottrell), his best friend (Seth Green), and his manager (Joe Pantoliano), Ryan finds fame as “The Identical” a rock ‘n’ roll singer who looks and sounds just like the legendary Drexel Hemsley…”

The Review:  I was not exceed about seeing this movie on Friday.  It sounded pretty stupid to me when Becky told me it was about a rock and roll singer and another guy who sang songs as an impersonator.  The movie has Blake Rayne, who I had never seen in a starring role before, along with Ray Liotta and Ashley Judd.  It has a Christian element to it as Ray Liotta plays the main character’s father who is an old school preacher and he played the part extremely well.  I have to say that I think this is one of the best roles I’ve seen Ray play in a long time and he was really good in this movie.  Usually, Liotta plays a bad guy, but this character has heart and so does the movie.

The story is really good, the music is good too and it has a feel like it is a true story.  If there is one complaint, the main character was a bit too much like Johnny Cash or Elvis.   It probably could be a true story the way the script was written and I think that is what made it entertaining to watch.  I don’t want to give away too much of the film, but it is a really good Drama that we both liked.  It’s a very clean cut movie too without any foul language and was very well done.  We both liked it and thought it was worth the price of admission.  It’s more of an adult film about relationships and the choices that we make in life and how our choices can affect the lives of others and following our passions.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Expendables 3

Expendables3Becky and I took Bianca to go see Expendables 3 today at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Expendables 3 describes the movie as follows…

“Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his band of aging mercenaries recruit a younger crew to battle the one man capable of exterminating the Expendables in this sequel directed by Red Hill’s Patrick Hughes. When Barney and Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) co-founded the Expendables, they were positively unstoppable. Years later, Stonebanks abandoned the team to become a cutthroat arms dealer, and Barney was forced to kill the man he once called a brother….“

The Review:  After running the ADT Marathon today with Becky and our friend Mark, it was easy to talk Becky into going and sitting in a movie.  Bianca came along and the only movie we hadn’t seen was Expendables 3, so we decided to go and see it.  First it was just over 2 hours long and as Bianca said, “It felt like it was 4 hours long.”.  We had low expectations going into this movie and it met or exceeded our expectations.  It was terrible.  I’m glad I missed the first two versions of this film, which seemed like something that was thrown together with a bunch of old action hero’s to get a paycheck at the expense of the audience.  Sorry, but we tried to watch it and enjoy it, but it is painful to watch.  It’s on the same level as watching professional wrestling.

This movie is really bad.  They try to make it serious, but it shouldn’t be called The Expendables, but The Invincibles as these ten old guys take on an entire army.  It was less believable than the Rambo series or any of Sylvester Stalone movies.  Most super hero movies are more believable than this movie.  This film might be a good rental, but Becky and Bianca totally hated it.  I thought it was pretty lame and I’ll give it a cheesy rental rating.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The November Man

novembermanBecky and I went to see The November Man last night at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at The November Man  describes the movie as follows…

A legendary ex-CIA agent emerges from retirement to protect a witness, but his mission lands him in the sights of his former protégé in this cat-and-mouse spy thriller based on the novel There are no Spies by Bill Granger. Having serves the CIA loyally for years, Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) retreates to Switzerland to live out the rest of his days in peace. Peter finds himself drawn back into the fray…

The Review:  The November Man is a bit like those movies that Clint Eastwood used to make when he was too old to be doing the things he was trying to do at the time.  Now we have Pierce Brosnan doing the same thing as an old 007 type working for the CIA.  The movie has an okay story and the acting is okay, but not really that great since Pierce plays the same character all the time.  The movie just didn’t do it for us and reminded us of watching a remake of a James Bond film.

The story is just too far fetched at times with people running around shooting people and the police never show up.  The characters end up outsmarting the CIA, the Russians and everyone involved that is chasing them with a bit of the Jason Bourne feel to it.  In this case, it was “Peter Bored” since the character Peter Devereaux was just too boring.  Becky ended up falling asleep.  I would have to say that this is a Rental for sure and since Becky slept through most of the movie it was a Don’t Bother for her.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of When The Game Stands Tall

whengametall-4Becky and I went to see When The Game Stands Tall last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at When The Game Stands Tall describes the movie as follows…

“James CaviezelLaura Dern, and Michael Chiklis star in this emotionally charged sports drama inspired by the true story of celebrated football coach Bob Ladouceur (Caviezel), and the personal trials he endured while leading the De La Salle High School Spartans on an unprecedented 151-game winning streak. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Review:  When The Game Stands Tall is a typical sports movie about a football program and a coach who has a different approach to winning.  We went into this movie with really low expectations since most sports movies are pretty terrible.  The fact that it had a Christian spiritual element to it made me think it was going to be even worse, since most of those films are just a little too campy.  I’m a Christian, but I’m not a huge fan of most Christian movies.  We were pleasantly surprised.  The closest movie that I could use to describe this film as far as the way it was done with quality content is Blindside with Sandra Bullock.  If you haven’t seen that movie, you should watch it.  It’s a good sports film too.

This movie is done extremely well.  The story is great, the acting is good, it was emotional for a football film and it had a really super message about life and the choices that we make as individuals.  The film was very inspirational and we both really liked this movie.  This is the kind of movie that will have you leaving feeling good and glad that you spent the money to go and see it.  The fact that it was based on a true story made it even better.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

sincitydametokillforBecky and I went to see Sin City: A Dame To Kill For last week at the AMC theaters in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at Sin City: A Dame To Kill For describes the movie as follows…

“Robert Rodriguez teams with Frank Miller to direct this follow-up to Sin City from a script by Miller and William Monahan based on preexisting stories along with new ones written for the big screen. Josh Brolin stars in the adaptation of the comic miniseries (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), which tells the backstory of Clive Owen‘s Dwight character as he is wrapped up in the thralls of femme fatale, Ava (Eva Green). Also new to the series is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Johnny, a mysterious gambler

The Review: Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is round two of the first Sin City film with Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba that Robert Rodriguez did a few years ago.  It’s a really strange and violent film with multiple stories going on at the same time with a comic book feel to it.  The characters are interesting, but this is a weird “cult” type science fiction and action film that is probably too whacky for most people.  It is one of those movies that you will either really like or probably hate.  I think that very few people will kind of like this movie, which is why I’m giving it a rental for a rating, since I was one of those people.

It’s extremely violent, so I didn’t really like that part of the film.  There is also plenty of sex too, which you would expect both of these I guess with a name like Sin City.  The comic book feel I thought was pretty cool and that’s what I liked about the movie because it’s very different.  It is in black and white and every once in a while there is a splash of color, so from an artistic perspective that was rally cool.  The movie though wasn’t very good because the story is not that great because it jumps around all the time.  You never get emotionally attached to any of the characters in the movie  You really don’t care what happens to anyone in the film because they are all nuts.  The acting is good though and the characters are definitely bizarre.

Becky hated this movie and fell asleep during it.  She thought it was a complete waste of time and fell asleep a few times during the movie.  Which is why she said it’s a Don’t Bother.  I liked it a little more than she did, but I wouldn’t want to see it again, so I’m giving it a Rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Giver

thegiverBecky and I went to see The Giver last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at The Giver  describes the movie as follows…

“A young man living in a future where complacency is valued above all else discovers the sinister secrets that hold his fragile society together after being selected to become the Receiver of Memory in this adaptation of author Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning young-adult novel. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) was raised to believe that conformity is the key to contentment. The society Jonas lives in is a peaceful one, in large part because their collective memories have been entrusted to the Giver (Jeff Bridges).

The Review:  The Giver is a trip!  This movie takes you into a future where society decides what you will become, there is no free will anymore and the State even controls your memories and what you know.  As would be expected, everything is really a lie because Communism doesn’t really work, just ask the millions of people who grew up and died under Joseph Stalin.  The Giver provides a much more sterile and peaceful world that seems very serene and nice, but appearances are not what they seem to be.

The story is really good and the acting is great.  It’s strange because most of the film is in black and white since this society doesn’t want people to see in color.  It is probably how the future will actually be with the number of whacko’s we have running the governments of the world today and wanting to control the lives of people more and more.  This movie is very well done.  It’s entertaining and fascinating.  It’s not a great film, but it’s done well and enjoyable as a science fiction film.

I know it was good because Becky doesn’t like science fiction films, but she liked this one.  She liked Divergent too though.  I think she really liked how organized and clean this futuristic society in The Giver was and she probably would have fit right in like Katie Holmes.  I would have definitely rebelled against it.  We both liked it and thought it was worth going to see on the big screen.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Guardians Of The Galaxy

guardiansofthefgalaxyBecky and I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy on opening week at the Regal theaters in Lone Tree, CO last week.  The MovieFone website at Guardians of the Galaxy describes the movie as follows…

Marvel Studios expands their cosmic presence on the big screen with this adaptation of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series, with Zero Dark Thirty‘sChris Pratt heading up a cast that includes David Bautista and Zoe Saldana.Super‘s James Gunn helms the big-budget sci-fi film. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

The Review:  Guardians of The Galaxy is one of the reasons why I enjoy going to the movies.  This movie is funny, has a great story, is exciting and includes plenty of action.  It’s just a really fun movie for the whole family.  The acting is good and the characters are very cool.  If you’re a fan of science fiction and Marvel comic films than you should really like this movie.  I really haven’t spoken with anyone who hasn’t liked it yet.

This movie is a block buster and it’s doing very well at the Box Office.  It’s about a young boy who gets taken by aliens when he’s a kid to another part of the galaxy to be raised by aliens that are rogue alien bad guys.  He ends up becoming a thief and misfit that teams up with some other angry alien misfits that end up having to save the galaxy from destruction.  The movie is very strange and funny.  It feels like a comic book and that’s what makes it such a good movie.

We all liked it and found it entertaining.  Conroy ended up seeing it twice and I could probably see it again.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Hercules

HerculesCurban and I went to see the new movie Hercules at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO earlier this week. The MovieFone website at Hercules describes the movie as follows…

‘Though he is famous across the ancient world for his larger-than-life exploits, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson), the son of Zeus and a human woman, is haunted by his tragic past. Now, he fights only for gold as a traveling mercenary, accompanied by a band of loyal followers, including Amphiarus (Ian McShane) and Autolycus (Rufus Sewell). However, when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek his help in defeating a savage warlord, Hercules must find the true hero within himself once again.

The Review:  I met Corban to go and see this new movie Hercules and we went into it with pretty low expectations.  The film delivered as expected.  It was really predictable and boring at times and reminded us of something we would have watched on television.  The story was much better than the original and more believable since Hercules was just a strong guy with a team of people who helped him become the famous Son of Zeus.

There are a few plot twists throughout the movie and it is entertaining at times, but it was a bit too much like Arnold’s Conan the Barbarian back in the late 1980’s with a guy with big muscles running around.  The acting isn’t the best, but it’s one of those films that will make a good renal.  It’s between being a rental and being worth the price of admission, but it kind of lost Corban and I for the most part since it was just too much of the same thing we’ve seen done before.

If you’re a big Dwayne Johnson fan you’ll probably like this movie more than we did.  Otherwise this is a movie that is best to be watched as a rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of America

americaBecky and I went to see America today at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, CO today. The MovieFone website at America describes the movie as follows…

‘In an era where the American Dream seems to have faded into a dark new dawn, filmmakers Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan ponder what may have become of the world if the U.S. had never come into being. By creating an alternate history in which British forces kill General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, the filmmakers lay the groundwork for a thought-provoking meditation on the crucial role of the United States on the world stage. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Review: I talked Becky into going and seeing this documentary on America that kind of asks the question about what the world would be like without America.  It doesn’t really ask this question though, but instead focuses on the complaints from people on the political left about how bad America is and the atrocities that America is responsible for since its inception.  It does a very good job of challenging these assertions about how bad America is and demonstrates the good things that America has done in the world.

There are some flaws in the film because it doesn’t talk about the challenges facing millions of Americans because of drugs, alcohol and physical abuse, prostitution and other problems within America or the American “Justice System” that can trap a person for life.  It doesn’t discuss in detail the evil political forces at work in America that are enslaving the masses economically.  However, it does a good job of overcoming the complaints that are being made about America because we are an entrepreneurial nation founded on individual freedom that is the real benefits of American Capitalism.  Men like Nikola Tesla for example immigrated to America with four cents in his pocket and became successful with his inventions, even if he died penniless.  This is not discussed in the film, but men like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are discussed and are examples of how many Americans have contributed to the entire world.

It concludes by showing how President Obama and Hilary Clinton, along with numerous other people on the left of the political spectrum have been influenced by a man who has lied about the history of America.  That was rather fascinating.  Becky and I like this movie and thought it was very well done.  I liked it more than she did since I am more of a history buff.  I think every American should see this movie.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Transformers: Age of Extinction

transformers_extBecky and I went to see the new Transformers today at the Regal theater in Lone Tree, CO.  The Fandango website at Transformers describes the movie as follows…

The Transformers film series continues with this fourth entry from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg. In the devastating aftermath of the fight for humanity, an enigmatic group strives to alter the course of history as an ancient force of evil plots the destruction of mankind. In order to defeat it, Optimus Prime (voice of Peter Cullen) and the rest of the Autobots must join forces with a new, resilient band of humans who will fight an epic battle that will determine the fate of the entire human race. Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi”

The Review: I talked Becky into going to see the new Transformers with me today.  Most of these movies have been pretty bad with over-the-top explosions and ridiculous situations that nobody could ever survive through and this film is more of the same, but somehow they are still fun to watch.  The Transformer characters were pretty much the same as before with a few new ones that showed up and the possibility for total annihilation of the planet.  There’s a big surprise!  The cars are really cool, which is one of the reasons why I like these movies.

Conroy went and saw it on Friday without Becky and I, but he really didn’t like it.  He thought the story was lame and it was just blowing things up all the time.  Becky and I liked it, but Becky thought it was way too long and “stimulation overload”, but I thought it was what I expected and found it entertaining.  If you like science fiction action movies and Summer blockbusters than put this one on your list and you shouldn’t be disappointed  It’s not a great movie, but it’s fun to watch and not realistic by any stretch.
