John & Becky’s Movie Review of Jersey Boys

jerseyboysBecky and I went to see Jersey Boys last week when we were in Seattle running the Seattle Marathon at the AMC theaters downtown Seattle, WA.  The Fandango website at Jersey Boys describes the movie as follows…

Adapted from the 2006 Tony Winner for Best Musical, this bittersweet saga dramatizes the rise and fall of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – one of the key pop groups of the early ’60s, responsible for such iconic hits as “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man” and (&”Big Girls Don’t Cry.”} The story opens in New Jersey, where young Francesco Castelluccio (John Lloyd Young) and his buddies face a narrow window of future career options. Their possible paths include show business on one hand and organized crime on the other, embodied by the slightly menacing yet avuncular kingpin, Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo (Christopher Walken), who runs the neighborhood and keeps an eye on them…

The Review: Becky and I have never seen the musical Jersey Boys, so we didn’t know what to expect with this movie about music legend Frankie Valli.  What we did expect was a slow moving film since it was directed by screen legend Clint Eastwood.  The acting and directing of this film was very well done and it is a very interesting movie.  We were not sure if it is a true story, but it certainly gave the impression that it is based on a true story.  Even if you don’t know any of the music from this era, the movie is very well done.

We are also not huge fans of musicals, but the way this film is done it doesn’t feel like a musical.  There is plenty of music, but unlike musicals where everyone breaks into song at inappropriate times there is none of that nonsense with this movie.  You can put this one on your list to watch because it is very entertaining, fascinating and plenty of drama.  We both really liked it and would recommend it as being worth the trip.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of How to Train Your Dragon 2

trainyourdragon2Becky and I went to see How to Train Your Dragon 2 on Father’s Day at the Regal theaters in Lone Tree, CO.  The Fandango website at How to Train Your Dragon 2 describes the movie as follows…

Dragons and Vikings have finally made peace, but when the villainous Drago plots a massive invasion, it’s up to Hiccup (voice of Jay Baruchel) and Toothless to save the day in this sequel from DreamWorks Animation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi”

The Review:  How to Train Your Dragon was a great animated movie that is really a fun flick for all ages.  The second installment was just as good as the first one, with the exception that the Dad dies for a movie that opened on Father’s Day.  That was crazy.  Still the movie was really well done and pretty entertaining. Of course, it’s a children’s film, but we all really liked this movie.

The story is very well done.  The main character has another challenge in facing a dragon Master who wants to take his pet dragon.  It’s a cool flick if you like these movies.  You might want to see the first one before you go see this one, but we all thought it was Worth The Trip or a Don’t Miss It.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Maleficent

maleficentBecky and I went to see Maleficent last week at the Regal theaters in Lone Tree, CO last week.  The MovieFone website at Maleficent describes the movie as follows…

“As a beautiful young woman of pure heart, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) has an idyllic life in a forest kingdom. When an invading army threatens the land, Maleficent rises up to become its fiercest protector. However, a terrible betrayal hardens her heart and twists her into a creature bent on revenge. She engages in an epic battle with the invading king’s successor, then curses his newborn daughter, Aurora — realizing only later that the child holds the key to peace in the kingdom.”

The Review:  Maleficent is a great Disney story that has a cast of strange characters in a fantasy world.  The acting by Jolie is really good and she plays this evil character extremely well.  The graphics and overall feeling of the movie is very good and it is definitely entertaining.  The story will keep your interest with a twist to the Sleeping Beauty story as it focuses on the life of the evil queen as the center of this film.  What made her go from being a happy fairy to becoming the evil queen is answered in the movie and how it’s put together is very clever.

The biggest complaint that we all had about this movie is that it’s just a little too “Disney”.  Disney can make some good films, but all too often they want to make it so that a five year old can go to their movies.  So in an effort to try to appeal to every age audience they make it a little too childlike, instead of doing it more like a Pirates of the Caribbean that was more of a PG-13 film.  They made this movie too friendly and Maleficent is not as evil as you would expect her to be, but it’s still a good movie.

We both liked it and found it entertaining, but some of the kids liked it more than others.  Conroy thought it was pretty good, but he and I thought it would be better.  Corban didn’t like it that much and Bianca loved it.  It’s definitely a kids movie more than an adult film.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Edge of Tomorrow

edgeoftomorrowBecky and I went to see Edge of Tomorrow a few weeks ago at the AMC theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The Fandango website at Edge of Tomorrow describes the movie as follows…

“Tom Cruise stars as a futuristic soldier who is killed during a battle with alien invaders, and lives out the last day of his life over and over again in director Doug Liman‘s adaptation of the popular Manga All You Need is Kill. In the not-too-distant future, a ferocious race of aliens dubbed “Mimics” have descended from the stars to stake their claim on Earth. Five years after arriving, they’re poised to claim Europe…

The Review:  Tom Cruise has done some great movies and some really bad films.  He is a bit whacked with his Scientology beliefs, so many people don’t like to support his films, but if you like science fiction movies this is one to go and see.  It’s extremely well done with a sold story, good acting and a pretty different movie.  However, Becky thought she was watching Groundhog Day for a while that she thought was a little too annoying.  She still liked it though.

The story is pretty wild.  Mankind is being eliminated by an alien race and they need a way to defeat the aliens that have the ability to control time.  The point is made that if you can control time than you can be unstoppable and it gets really interesting from that standpoint.  I really liked this movie and thought it was super cool.  I would watch it again.

We both liked it and found it entertaining, but I liked it more than Becky.  If you like science fiction movies you should put this one on your list for sure.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Godzilla

godzillaBecky and I went to see Godzilla a couple of weeks ago at the Regal theaters in Lone Tree, CO last week.  The MovieFone website at Godzilla describes the movie as follows…

“Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston). Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco.”

The Review:  Godzilla is the remake of the classic and poorly made Japanese Godzilla films, but they had already done one before with Matthew Broderick in 1998 that was terrible.  This new version wasn’t as bad as that film, although they killed off the main character really early in the film that kind of wrecked it.  The monsters reminded me of one of the old Japanese type films where Godzilla ends up being a good monster to protect the planet, but it’s a pretty goofy flick overall.

If you are a Godzilla and science fiction fan than you will probably like this movie.  At least it starts in Japan, which is where you would expect the giant lizard to show up based on the history of the character.  The acting is pretty good, the story isn’t terrible, but it’s Godzilla so what do you expect?  A giant monster comes up out of the deep and starts wiping out a city and you have Godzilla and usually there are other monsters that he battles to save Tokyo.  That pretty much sums up this movie,

We both liked it and found it entertaining, but some of the kids liked it more than others.  Conroy thought it was pretty good, but he and I both thought it would be better.  Bianca though it was okay and Corban didn’t  see it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Neighbors

neighborsBecky and I went to see Neighbors a few weeks ago at the AMC theater in Castle Rock, CO.  The Fandango website at Neighbors describes the movie as follows… An immature couple with a newborn infant go to war with the fraternity that turns their once-peaceful neighborhood into party central in this outrageous comedy of one-upsmanship. Restless thirtysomethings Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) are still clinging to the last vestiges of their youth as they attempt to adjust to the rigors of raising a newborn in their picturesque suburban starter home. When a massive moving truck pulls into the driveway next door, the bleary-eyed pair grow excited at the prospect of getting new neighbors. Unfortunately for Mac and Kelly, the new arrivals turn out to be the Delta Psi Beta fraternity. The Review:  Becky and I thought the Previews for this movie looked really funny, so we decided to go and see it. Seth Rogan can be a hit or a miss with his movies and this was definitely more of a miss than a hit.  I know that it got pretty good movie reviews, but it’s extremely juvenile and probably great if you’re in High School and think that stupid humor and smoking dope is funny.  Almost all of the good laughs are in the Previews, so there isn’t much that is new in the actual film.  It does have some good laughs, but it’s no a really good comedy that you would want to see more than once. The story could have been really good, but the script wasn’t written very well.  The acting isn’t bad, but it’s just kind of a stupid movie.  The movie is really funny at times, but it was one of those movies where you walked out and said, “It was alright.”, so we’re going to call this a definite rental. John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Blended

blendedBecky and I went to see Blended last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO last night.  The Moviefone website at Blended describes the movie as follows…

“Recently divorced mom Lauren (Drew Barrymore) and widowed dad Jim (Adam Sandler) let their friends push them into a blind date, which goes disastrously wrong. Unsurprisingly, neither wants to see the other ever again. However, fate intervenes when both Jim and Lauren, unbeknown to each other, purchase one-half of the same vacation package at a South African resort; they and their children are forced to share the same suite and participate in a slew of family activities together.”

The Review:  Blended is a typical Adam Sandler romantic comedy movie with a quirky far fetched story.  It has a bunch of cheesy situations and laughs and it is funny with a pretty good story, even though it is goofy.  The characters are pretty crazy like most of his films.  It’s fun to watch though and Drew Barrymore is her usual character as she plays the comedic straight man opposite Adam Sandler.

The movie is sometimes sad and sometimes is really funny, so it’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster throughout the film. It has a Brady Bunch theme to it since Drew’s character has two boys and Adam’s character has three girls and throughout the movie they are moving toward becoming a blended family, hence the name.  It makes a joke out of the complexity of blended families that is one of the reasons why it’s funny because of the dynamics that can take place in those situations.  It’s predictable, but it’s a pretty good movie for being an Adam Sandler movie.  It reminded me quite a bit of his film Just Go With It, but I thought this was a much better movie since it actually had some substance to it.  It isn’t a great movie, it isn’t a terrible movie, so it’s a good rental or date flick.  I didn’t mind sitting through it once it got going and it had some good laughs.

We both liked it and found it entertaining, but our expectations were not high going in and we are used to Adam Sandler movies.  We expected it to be terrible, so do not go into this movie with high expectations and you should like it.  Drew Barrymore saves the movie since Adam Sandler is primarily good at just delivering jokes and is always the same guy in everyone of his films.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of The Other Woman

OtherWomanBecky and I went to see the new movie The Other Woman last week at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO. a couple of weeks ago.  The Moviefone website at The Other Woman describes the movie as follows…

“After discovering her boyfriend is married, a woman (Cameron Diaz) tries to get her ruined life back on track. But when she accidentally meets the wife he’s been cheating on (Leslie Mann), she realizes they have much in common, and her sworn enemy”

The Review:  The Other Woman didn’t get very good reviews from the movie critics, but viewers seemed to lille it quite a bit.  The story is actually really funny and creative in the way that it is presented in dealing with adultery.  The chemistry between the characters is really funny and Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann play their characters really well.

The movie is a bit juvenile at times, but I’ve heard stories of what some people have done when going through a divorce or discovering a cheating spouse and their actions can be totally juvenile.  The movie is funny.  It has plenty of laughs and you will really dislike the cheating husband by the end of the film, which is pretty much the objective of the film.  What makes it interesting is that none of the women have a clue that this guy is such a jerk and cheating on his wife.

We both liked this movie and found it entertaining.  Most of the people who were in the movie with us liked it as well.  The way all the emotions come into play with the characters is very well done.  Becky and I both thought this film was worth the price of admission.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Brick Mansions

brickmansionsI’m behind on about four or five movie reviews, but I’m starting with the one one saw last night and hopefully I’ll catch up this weekend.  I’ve been too busy delivering vehicles and working on my Network Marketing ventures to write reviews, but we’ve seen some movies recently that I need to write reviews about.  Becky and I went to see the last Paul Walker movie Brick Mansions last night at the AMC theaters in Castle Rock, CO. The Moviefone website at Brick Mansions describes the movie as follows…

“In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city.”

The Review:  Brick Mansions is a terrible movie.  The acting is bad, the story is stupid, the violence is ridiculous and it’s a bit like a bunch of comic book characters.  The opening scene is really the best, which I think they took out of a James Bond film with the guy jumping all over the place and not being caught because of his ability to leap over people, jump down stairs and over buildings without getting injured.  It’s fun to watch and then it goes downhill from there. It’s unfortunate that it was Paul Walker’s last movie and they dedicate it to him at the end of the movie.

The story is about how in 2016, Detroit has gotten so bad that they seal off the place known as Brick Mansions from the rest of the city.  The Mayor wants to put a bomb in the middle of the city, wipe everyone out and rebuild it after it’s a wasteland for some rich real estate developers.  The main drug dealers in the inner city is brought to justice by Paul Walker and he’s going in to take revenge on another guy who worked for the kingpin that supposedly killed his Father, who was also a cop.

Like I said, the story is pretty stupid and the acting is just terrible.  At one point the drug lord goes from talking in a Detroit accent to a Jamaican accent.  The fight scenes made no sense, along with the car chases where at one minute they don’t want to shoot them and the next minute they are using machine guns mounted on a truck to take out a Ford Mustang.  The main characters get in situations where they would certainly die or be injured with unbelievable MMA type fight scenes and they come out without even a black eye.  It was ridiculous.

This is definitely one to skip and save your money, even if you’re bored.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Divergent

DivergentBecky and I went with Corban and Conroy to see the new movie Divergent this week at the AMC theaters in Lone Tree, CO. The Moviefone website at Divergent describes the movie as follows…

“Set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues, Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.”

The Review:  Divergent is based on a popular book series, which are always a hit or a miss.  Eragon for example was a really popular book, but the film was nothing like the book and the movie was terrible.  The Seventh Son is coming out based on The Last Apprentice series here in United States and it doesn’t look anything like the book series.  I have read all of the books and the trailer looks like it’s not even close to the book series, so there should be many disappointed fans.  The Hunger Games was done well and The Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit are probably the best movies ever made from a fantasy book that the readers could feel really good about, even with a few of its shortcomings.  The Harry Potter series was another one that was great, even if you never read the books. Divergent is very well done, like Hunger Games.  It’s a bit like The Hunger Games with a futuristic world after the coming Apocalypse.

Divergent is a bit of a strange science fiction flick.  It is pretty well done and entertaining that kept our interest from beginning to end.  It’s a bit like Harry Potter in that there are five different classes of people in this world of the future, which reminded us of having the different groups of wizards at the Hogwarts school.  There is also the unlikely hero, in this case a young woman, who doesn’t fit into any one of the groups of people.  She is trained in combat skills by one of the groups that are designed to protect this strange modern society.  However, if it is found out that she is a Divergent, which is someone who doesn’t fit in because of her advanced skills, she will be eliminated by the group that she has joined to protect this modern society.

The movie has plenty of action, drama and suspense.  It kept our interest and it’s somewhat like a cross between Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, which you’ve figured out by now.  If you liked those movies, than you will probably like this film with several plot twists and unique characters.  It’s entertaining, but a bit disturbing to think that what the future would be like after a nuclear holocaust based on the sinful nature of mankind.  Utopia will always have a flaw because of the pursuit of power and greed, which is what this movie shows quite well.

We all liked this movie and it was worth the trip.
