I went to see Insidious: Chapter 2 a couple weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with Conroy and Corban.  The Fandango website at Insidious: Chapter 2 describes the movie as follows…

”The famed horror team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins in INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world…”

The Review:  Insidious: Chapter 2 is the second chapter of the movie Insidious, which wasn’t a great movie to begin with and Chapter 2 is not any better.  It’s a supposed to be a scary movie, but it’s not very scary.  There are a few scary parts in the film, but for the most part the story is pretty lame.  It can’t decide if it’s a thriller or a horror film.  It’s pretty much the same as the first film, so there really isn’t anything very new with this movie, but it’s not done nearly as well.

The characters are not terrible, but there are a couple of them that should have been left out of the film, like the old lady helping to figure out why the spirits are haunting the family.  Her character was lame and her acting was really bad.  Rose Byrne was good in the film and so was Patrick Wilson, but they couldn’t hope to save this movie.  The story overall is pretty lame as you follow this family being haunted by the ghost of a woman and her son who are angry in death as they were in life.  It really doesn’t make any sense at all.

All three of us were extremely bored.  I think I jumped one time in the entire film and it was more of a startle than anything.  Your best bet is to wait for the rental on this one or skip it all together.

I went to see Riddick last week at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO with Conroy.  The Fandango website at Riddick describes the movie as follows…

”Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, fugitive Riddick (Vin Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he has yet encountered. His only hope for escape is to activate an emergency beacon, but that brings with it a different problem: mercenaries. With time running out, Riddick realizes that neither group will leave without his head as trophy…”

The Review:  Riddick is continuation of a Vin Diesel character that started out with the film Pitch Black, which I thought was a pretty cool science fiction action film that came out back in the year 2000.  Now 13 years later, Vin Diesel is still making movies with this crazy futuristic character.

This movie is a continuation to the last film, The Chronicles of Riddick that has him being the leader of a violent group of aliens that are going around destroying planets and now they have double crossed him and left him on a very hostile alien planet.  Once there he discovers that he’s wanted for his crimes and has to set off a rescue beacon that brings a group of mercenaries to kill him before he can get off the planet.  The problem is that the monsters are coming to get all of them before they can leave, which makes for a pretty wild movie.

Conroy and I both liked it and thought it was Worth The Trip, but it’s really a Rental for most people at best.  The character is pretty cool, in the same way that Conan the Barbarian is entertaining, but it’s very violent and not very realistic.  The acting isn’t great, but it’s just an entertaining and fun action film, if you like the science fiction and action genre.

We went to see We’re The Millers on opening night at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with our friends Chris & Hope.  The Fandango website at We’re The Millers describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  We’re The Millers is a very funny movie with a great cast of characters and a really funny story.  The movie has plenty of laughs, it’s pretty crude at time and definitely rated R for a reason, much like the film The Hangover.  It’s a bit crazy!

It’s an over-the-top movie that is about a small time weed dealer in Colorado (that alone was pretty funny), who finds himself having to travel to Mexico to bring back an RV full of marijuana from a major drug dealer after he loses his drug dealers money.  It’s not realistic by any stretch, but the characters are a crack-up and the acting is great with fantastic chemistry.  There are quite a few parts of the film that will make you uncomfortable, but it’s still very funny.  Some people will definitely be offended by this movie, so beware or be prepared to be offended.

We all liked this movie and thought it was a Don’t Miss It because it’s hilarious.  It’s not for everyone, probably not for people under 18 years of age.  If you miss it in the theater, you can always rent it at home.

I went to see The Conjuring last week at a movie theater in Durango, CO with Corban and Conroy, who talked me into taking them to see it.  The Fandango website at The Conjuring describes the movie as follows…

Based on a true story, “The Conjuring” tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives…”

The Review:  The Conjuring is a creepy horror movie that takes place in the 1970’s in an old farm house that a family purchases to start a new life only to encounter a demonic entity that wants to kill them.  It opens up by explaining that the story is based on true events from the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were probably the first paranormal investigators back when chasing ghosts was viewed as whacky.  Most of these movies are incredibly far-fetched, with liberties on what is really “true”, so I did some checking after seeing this flick and discovered an interesting website dedicated to horror movies.

The website owner was a guy who was wondering the same thing as me and put out a request to find out of how true this story really was or if it was just another Hollywood “conjuring”.  It turns out that he heard back from one of the girls, who actually lived this demonic nightmare and she said that it’s entirely true, other than a few small parts and that there were even more things that happened than what was in the movie.  You can read his article here.

Anyway, I’m always fascinated by these kind of supernatural horror movies that are based on a true story, having had my own supernatural encounters in the past.  I have probably mentioned this before, but I spent the night in a haunted cemetery in Hudson, Wisconsin on three different occasions and had some strange happenings.  I’m also a Christian and I know that as Verbal in The Usual Suspects said it best “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist“.

This movie brings the Devil and his evil entourage of demons to light and moves them out of the darkness.  It really demonstrates how much these evil beings really want to steal, kill and destroy mankind.  When given the opportunity they will kill you.  I won’t share all the details here of a story about a friend of mine in High School who had a demon come right up out of the flame of a candle, look directly at him and say, “I’m going to bury you.“, but I can tell you that it definitely tried more than once and by now it may have succeeded.

This movie was done extremely well.  It’s scary, but also rather fascinating and sucks you into the family and the diabolical entity trying to destroy them.  The history of the farmhouse, the prior murders, hangings, ghosts and the evil that transpired is really crazy to watch on the big screen.  Corban was white knuckling his seat like an amusement park ride and I have to admit that I got sucked into the film as well.  Conroy wasn’t as freaked out by it, but he loved it and said it was the best scary movie he had ever seen.  The fact that it is based on a true story really made the film in my opinion.

I have to rate this a Don’t Miss It and Conroy and Corban agree, even if you’re not a fan of supernatural horror flicks, you should go see this one, it’s pretty wild.

I went to see Pacific Rim last week at the Regal Theater in Lone Tree, CO with Corban and his friend Noah.  The Fandango website at Pacific Rim describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  Pacific Rim had a set of Previews that made me laugh the first time I saw them and I thought, “What is this movie Godzilla meets Transformers?  That movie looks terrible.”.

However, when I found out that Guillermo del Toro did the movie, the guy who Directed Hell Boy and Pan’s Labyrinth, I figured I would go and check it out.  So, I talked Conroy and his buddy Noah into going with me last week.  I asked Corban too but he said, “No way, it looks stupid.” and I wasn’t about to get Becky to go since she hates science fiction films, even with Tom Cruise in them.  Someone also told me that they spent close to $200 million on the film, which made me think that I could spend $5 to go see it and see what $200 million did.

Believe it or not, this movie was really cool.  I thought it was going to suck, as I already mentioned, but it was much more than Godzilla meets Transformers.  The robots were really amazing and they required two people to pilot them, by doing some kind of a “brain merge” that used half of the brain of each pilot to use the robot, which added another dynamic to the film.  The special effects were fantastic, the story was really good with alien creatures that had come through a portal deep in the ocean.  Each monster was rated like a Hurricane, Class 1 to Class 5 that was clever and they were adapting to the robots fighting skills.

Yeah I know, it still sounds kind of stupid, but there are not any big name actors in this movie and they do a great job pulling this movie off because the story and characters are very entertaining and fun. Conroy, Noah and I all liked it and thought it was definitely worth the trip.  Conroy and Noah said it was a Don’t Miss It and I was close to being there with them.

If you don’t like fantasy or sci-fi movies you probably won’t like this, but I’m not so sure about that because I think Becky would have liked it.  It’s definitely Worth The Trip to see Pacific Rim.  Check it out on the Big Screen before it leaves the theaters.

Becky and I went to see the new Independent film The Way, Way Back last week at the Mayan Theater in Denver, CO.  The Fandango website at The Way, Way Back describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  The Way, Way Back is one of those movies that are just fun to watch.  It’s a bit like The Sandlot, where the characters are a bit over-the-top and their personalities will suck you into the movie.  The opening scene with Steve Carell is very funny.  He plays a real jerk in this film, which he does surprisingly well.  Steve’s character Trent is the boyfriend of the main character’s recently divorced Mom, who thinks he’s really something and he and the teenager have nothing in common.

The characters in this movie are really good and the story is very entertaining.  I don’t want to tell too much about the film, other than what the Fandango description tells about it, but this movie was done extremely well.  The dialogue in the movie is really done well, with no big special effects, just great acting and a fantastic script.  You can’t help to like this kid and his buddies at the Water Wizz water park.  They are really fun to watch.  This film probably isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s a really good movie that was definitely worth the price of admission.

We went with our friends Mark and Maria and we all really liked this movie.  Becky and I could definitely see this one again when it comes out on the rental market, it’s very funny.  We’re giving it a Don’t Miss It.

Becky and I went to see The Heat a few weeks ago at the AMC Theaters in Castle Rock, CO and I have to say that the popcorn at AMC sucks lately, compared to what they used to use.  The Fandango website at The Heat describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  The Heat is a movie that I thought was going to really stink based on the Previews that I saw for it.  It just didn’t look like a very funny movie and I figured they burned all the jokes in the trailers, but what was funny is that most of the jokes in the Previews were not in the film.  Becky’s brother had also seen it and he said that it was terrible, so we had really low expectations going into this movie, but for some reason we decided to see it anyway.  Actually, the reason was because Becky still wanted to see it or I would have passed.

The story is actually entertaining and funny at times, but it reminded me of that movie where Sandra Bullock dresses up to be a beauty queen, Miss Congeniality.  It was extremely predictable and had some good laughs at times, but it was also ridiculous.  There were parts like Bridesmaids that were really funny and some of the characters will definitely make you laugh, but it wasn’t a great movie.  This is one of those movies that is going to show up on FX or some other television channel in a few years on Sandra Bullock tribute day.

It’s probably going to hit the rental racks pretty soon and I would suggest waiting for it to arrive at Redbox, unless you don’t have anything else to see at the box office and want to see a movie.  It’s not terrible, but it’s somewhere between worth the trip and a rental.  Becky really liked it and her brother and I thought it was “okay”.

The Review:  Despicable Me 2 is the second installment of the Despicable Me characters that were hilarious the first time around.  This time it’s just as funny as before only with a completely different story that works really well for the characters.  There are some really great cartoons that have come out over the years, ever since Shrek started this type of new animation, with characters that are far more life like than the Bugs Bunny type characters we grew up with as kids.  Many of these films are better than many of the big budget movies that Hollywood puts out on the market with live actors.

The story of Despicable Me 2 is pretty funny and I love these characters, especially the Minions, who are a crack-up.  The character Gru is really funny, Steve Carell does a great job with him and his Gru’s girlfriend in this movie is hilarious and a good fit for the film.

If you’ve never seen Despicable Me, you should rent it and watch it first and then go see this movie.  It will make it much more enjoyable and this is definitely one of the movies you should take your children to go see or your grand children. If for some reason you didn’t like the first one, which I can’t imagine how you wouldn’t, then you should skip this one since it’s pretty much the same characters as before in a different situation.

We all liked it and rated it a Don’t Miss It.  It’s definitely worth the price of admission.

Becky and I went to see The Lone Ranger on opening night at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO with our kids and our friends Chris and Hope.  The Fandango website at The Lone Ranger describes the movie as follows…

The Review:  The Lone Ranger is a character who I grew up watching as a kid on television.  It was usually on after Gilligan’s Island or Bewitched, so I understand Tonto and The Lone Ranger characters.  After all, “Even The Lone Ranger had Tonto.” is something that we often hear about how you need other people in your life.  However, this version was a bit strange.  Tonto is played by Johnny Depp and I’ll just come out and say that he sucks in this movie.  He’s actually pretty good as the “old” Tonto, who is telling the story of The Lone Ranger to a kid wearing a mask in 1933, but during the main scenes of the film, you think you’re watching Captain Jack Sparrow dressed up like an Indian.  His character made absolutely zero sense and he and The Lone Ranger do not really like each other for a good part of the film since The Lone Ranger is the evil white man.

The story isn’t very good and the movie is way too long.  The Lone Ranger goes from being a guy who refuses to shoot a gun to suddenly being a sharp shooter the minute he puts on the mask.  This made absolutely no sense whatsoever and too much of this movie didn’t make any sense, like the Earth being out of balance and flesh eating rabbits?  It was all over the place at times and a bit whacky.  The movie was filmed in Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona I believe, so the scenery is great.  There is quite a bit of senseless violence, including the main villain eating a guy’s heart that made no sense again in this film.

The movie isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either and it definitely is not The Lone Ranger that I remember as a kid.  Instead it’s some crazy character that the whacko department at Disney dreamed up.  A friend of ours, who we go to movies with quite a bit is in the film as an “extra”, but there are so many extras in this movie that we were unable to spot him during the film.  We’ll have to try again when it comes out on DVD and fast forward through the film looking for him because I don’t know if it’s worth watching a second time.

Corban and Bianca went with us and they thought it was Worth The Trip.  Becky and I are going to have to go with Rental on this one though since it was somewhere between being a rental and worth the price of admission.  Chris and Hope didn’t love it either, but thought it was “alright”, so that speaks rental to me.

Becky and I went to see White House Down on opening night at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO.  The MovieFone website at White House Down describes the movie as follows…

”’In Columbia Pictures’ ‘White House Down’, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country…”

The Review:  White House Down is a movie that I could have swore I saw just a couple of months ago called Olympus Has Fallen, so I went and did a search at BoydFlix.com and low and behold I did write a review about that movie.  This is one of those “Who Wore It Best” films since it’s almost the exact same movie that we just saw back in April.  I guess Hollywood is out of ideas again!  The difference this time though is that the main character wants to be a Secret Service Agent where the last character already was a Secret Service Agent.  And instead of the White House being taken over by foreigners it’s now an inside job with disgruntled Americans.  Also, the President is more like President Obama than George Bush in this version too, he might even be a smoker.

White House Down is entertaining, but it’s also so far fetched and the Channing Tatum takes about the same amount of abuse as Superman did in his latest film.  He didn’t crash through buildings, but he does fall off of them and is like a Timex, where he “takes a licking and keeps on ticking”, which gets old after awhile.  If you get beat up and thrown through a plate glass window onto a table and jump out a building, you can’t just keep running like nothing has happened.  Life just doesn’t work that way, so be prepared for some ridiculous action scenes.  It does still have some entertainment value, but I don’t think it’s worth the price of admission.

Becky and I are going to have to go with Rental on this one the same that we did with the previous version.  We have to be fair to all the actors, so that we are politically correct.
